Black Lion led Red and Yellow as they chased the robeast through the darkness.
“Damn this thing is fast,” Lance commented.
“Keith, I can’t keep up. Yellow Lion is too damaged,” Hunk reported.
Keith knew the truth. It wasn’t Yellow Lion who was badly injured, it was Hunk. “Hunk, stay here with Lance. I’ll have Allura rendezvous with me and we’ll find a way to stop this thing.”
“Are you sure about this?” Lance asked.
“Yeah, just stay here and rest. I’ll call if I need you.”
Yellow and Red Lion slowed to a stop and then sat down on the ground. Together they watched Black Lion and the robeast disappear into the distance.
“I don’t like just sitting here,” Lance said.
“Me neither,” Hunk groaned. “It’s all we…can do right now.” Hunk held his side as the pain grew worse.
Keith stayed in pursuit of the Shadow Beast. He wasn’t sure what to do; all he knew was that light hurt the creature. Keith took a moment to check the chronometer. Sunrise is in about fifteen minutes, he thought to himself. He checked his position and figured out where the robeast was headed.
“Pidge come in, this is Keith.”
“I read you, Keith,” Pidge replied.
“Did you find Allura?” he asked as Black Lion knocked over a large tree.
“I’m right here, Keith,” Allura replied.
It’s about time she showed up, Keith thought. He quickly pushed aside any temptation to reprimand her and immediately issued his orders. “The robeast is heading west towards the Forest of Pirec. Before he makes it there, he has to cross the Telzoh Plains. I want you to get there and cut off his escape route.” Black Lion shuddered as another tree was pushed aside.
“Understood,” Allura replied.
“Allura, you’ll get there faster if you fly,” Pidge told her.
“But what about you and Green Lion?” she asked.
“We’ll be ok. You have to get to the Plains and stop that robeast.”
“Ok,” Allura sighed heavily. With reluctance Allura piloted Blue Lion into the air, leaving Pidge and his lion running across the landscape.
Keith was suffering from battle fatigue and trying to maintain control of his damaged lion was proving difficult. He had lost sight of the robeast five minutes prior after Black Lion stumbled over a large bolder and Keith was worried. Any moment now, he expected to break through the forest and onto the Telzoh Plains and find Allura fighting the monster by herself.
As Keith checked his position again Black Lion was hit hard from the side. Keith held on as Black Lion rolled side over side, sparks erupted from various side panels. “What the hell hit me?” Keith said softly. The main monitor was blinking on and off but Keith could see the robeast approaching as the sun began to rise over the plains.
The robeast stood over the motionless lion. Its foot rose up and hovered over the craft’s head. A loud shriek exploded inside the monster’s head. It quickly backed away from Black Lion, grabbing its head and howling in pain.
“You have done well, my pet,” said a voice that only the robeast could hear. “However, your time is now over. As the sun blankets this world, a veil shall fall on yours.”
The voice disappeared and the robeast no longer heard the shrieking. It looked up at the sun as it rose over the forest and the plains.
Keith watched with confusion as the robeast backed away from his craft then stood still as the rays of light approached it. The monster gave no cry or scream as its body erupted into a column of flame. A moment later, all which remained of the night’s horror was a burnt patch of grass and some ashes that were carried off by the wind.
Allura arrived on the Telzoh Plains to find Black Lion sitting on the ground and no sign of the robeast. The big blue cat landed and walked up beside Black Lion.
Keith was on top of his lion’s head, the top half of his body buried inside an electrical panel, leaving just his legs and feet visible.
“Keith, where’s the robeast?” Allura asked.
“Destroyed,” Keith said through his wrist communicator. He didn’t bother to pull himself out of the panel.
“You were able to kill it? That’s great.”
“I didn’t do it,” Keith stated just before receiving a small electrical shock.
“Where’s Lance and Hunk?”
“I already told them to go back to the castle.” Keith pulled himself out of the panel and replaced the cover. He wiped his hands on his flight suit then turned to face Blue Lion.
“Why didn’t I hear the command to return home?
“I told them privately.” Keith took a deep breath. He hated reprimanded his team, especially the princess, but this time he had no choice. He knew it would be better to tell her alone instead of in front of the others. “Allura, please come down here.”
Allura was worried. She could tell something was on Keith’s mind and she had an idea of what it was. Slowly, she removed herself from her seat and exited the lion via the top hatch. She hopped across the small gap between her lion and Keith’s and approached her commanding officer.
“Yes, Keith?”
The wind picked up slightly as Keith began to speak. “Do you mind telling me where you were all night?”
“I was helping a mother and her daughter.”
“All night long?”
“Yes,” Allura rubbed her hands together.
“Why was your communicator off?”
“I didn’t know it had gotten turned off.”
“You didn’t know?”
Allura noticed a change in Keith’s tone. “You don’t believe me, do you?”
“I just find it a little strange that you wouldn’t notice the lack of radio chatter during a night patrol. I would really like to know what you were doing last night.”
“What I was doing is none of your business,” Allura snapped.
“When your actions jeopardize the lives of my team, I make it my business. Because you were off fooling around somewhere, we couldn’t form Voltron to fight the robeast. Now, Hunk is on his way to the infirmary, the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time. Four of the five lions are heavily damaged, which leaves Arus defenseless. And to top it all off, I’m not sure I can trust you to fly Blue Lion in combat.”
“What? But Arus is my home; I have a right to defend her.”
“You didn’t defend her last night. Consider yourself on suspension as Blue Lion’s pilot. Return to the castle of give your lion key to Coran.” Keith turned away and approached another access panel.
“You can’t do this!” Allura yelled.
“I just did,” Keith replied.
Allura bit her lip. “I’m the fucking Princess of Arus! You’re just a space explorer! The lions belong to the royal family, not to you or the Alliance! You can’t tell me what I can and can’t do with my own lion!” Allura inhaled sharply. She couldn’t believe what she had just said to Keith.
Keith stood up and looked at her.
“Keith, I’m sorry. I didn’t know what I was saying.”
Keith just stared at her. “I think you should go.”
“But Keith I…”
“Go now, Allura!”
Keith’s voice had a tone Allura had never heard before. She quickly climbed back into her lion and took off. She set the autopilot to return home then removed her helmet, dropping it to the floor. She brought her hands to her face as she burst into tears.
The 98th Battle Group floated about the Northern Hemisphere of the planet Allebas. Captain Nettop stood proudly on the bridge of his battleship, the Fire of Doom. The crew of his ship was busy preparing for the attack on the planet. The moments leading up to the first shot always filled him with anticipation and excitement.
“Sir, I have an incoming message from Commander Cossack,” the comm. officer stated.
“Understood,” the Captain replied. Cossack had arrived in the system three hours prior and had immediately assumed control of the battle group. Nettop didn’t like it, but his orders came from King Zarkon and if he had to follow Cossack’s instruction, the so be it. Nettop activated his private comm. station and listened to Cossack’s message.
“Captain Nettop, we are altering the time of the attack. You have fifteen minutes to prepare your ships and begin attacking the designated targets. Is that understood?”
“Yes, sir,” Nettop replied. The comm. channel closed and he took in a deep breath. Fifteen minutes isn’t enough time to properly ready his fleet, but if those were the orders then he would do what he had to. Nettop addressed his fleet, informing all personnel of the changed plans. “This will be an interesting fight,” he thought to himself.
Cossack sat in his private war room on the Destroyer. A smile crept across his face, but it did not last for long. A familiar cloud of smoke emerged on the far side of the room.
“Took you long enough to get here, Haggar,” he said.
“My apologies, but things took a little longer on Arus than I had expected.” The old witch hobbled across the room to stand beside Cossack.
Cossack turned in his chair to face her. “I assume all is well?”
“Oh yes, the spell is working perfectly. Lotor should be arriving in Arus’ orbit soon. Are you ready?”
“Yes,” Cossack said as he stood. “I received your message and memorized it perfectly.”
“Excellent.” Haggar waved her staff, repeating an ancient incantation. In a swirl of magical purple light, Cossack’s features changed, resembling that of King Zarkon.
“Well done, old witch,” Cossack stated, mimicking Zarkon’s behavior. Even his voice now sounded like the king’s.
“You know what you need to do,” Haggar said.
Cossack activated his comm. system, patching in a line with Captain Trikiln, the former First Officer of Captain Filhick.
“Yes, my King?” asked Captain Trikiln.
“Captain, I have an important mission for you,” Cossack said through his disguise. “When you reach Arus, I want you to disable my son’s ship and allow him to be captured by the security forces on Arus.”
Captain Trikiln looked confused. “Sire, I don’t understand. Why would you want me to do that?”
“My son is a traitor to the crown. He has defied my orders, put the security of the Empire at risk for the fulfillment of his own selfish needs, and needlessly kills my officers.”
“Are you sure you want me to do it, sir?” Trikiln was nervous.
“Consider it retribution for the murder of your former captain.” Cossack mentally smiled. “And now”, he thought to himself, “the final touch.” “If you do this for me, Captain, I will see that you are properly received upon your return to Planet Doom.”
Captain Trikiln agreed to do the task and then closed the comm. The disguise that Cossack had been wearing melted away as magically as it had appeared.
Haggar grinned. “You’re good. I almost believed you were King Zarkon.”
“Thank you. Now, the attack on Allebas is about to begin. Cast your interference spell so we can complete our mission here.”
“As you wish.” Haggar walked to the large window that was behind Cossack’s desk and spread her arms. Her eyes closed and the incantation flowed from her lips. After speaking she turned to Cossack. “It is done. No communications can be sent out of this system.”
“Excellent, I will contact Lord Tivcon on Allebas and inform him to continue with the operation.”
As Cossack contacted the leader on Allebas the dark void of space above the planet erupted in a shower of red laser beams. The Allebas defense fighters had arrived in orbit to defend the planet and the battle began in earnest.
In the control room of the Castle of Lions, everyone had gathered around the center console, of which Allura sat. She had finished crying by the time she had returned but as she sat in front of her friends, all except Hunk, she fought back what tears remained behind her eyes.
“Dereliction of duty is what I call it,” Keith stated. “She put the entire team in danger.”
“We were in constant danger to begin with,” Lance retorted.
Lance and Hunk were the first to make it back to the castle. After making sure his large friend was secure in the medical wing, Lance had returned to the control room to await his friends. Once Keith had returned, Lance quickly came to defend the young princess from his overly-stubborn commander.
“But it was a necessary risk that we put ourselves in. Allura just made things worse.” Keith rarely got upset to the point of yelling, but this time his voice rang out loudly.
“It was an honest mistake,” Lance stated.
“I swear, I didn’t mean to do anything wrong,” Allura tried to say.
"I think it’s best if you remained silent, Princess,” Coran told her.
“Allura is to be suspended from active duty until I deem her fit to return to Blue Lion’s cockpit.” Keith’s voice was firm and everyone could tell he wasn’t joking around.
“I agree,” Coran said. “The Princess needs to remain in the castle for the time being.”
"But who’s going to fly Blue Lion?” Allura asked.
“We will use a replacement pilot in the meantime,” Coran said.
“You can’t do that!” Allura jumped from her seat and challenged the two men who, she felt, were conspiring against her. “Admit it, neither of you thinks that I can handle this. After all we’ve been through, Keith; I thought I had proved myself to you by now. I can see that I was wrong.”
“Allura, please calm down,” Lance said.
“I will not calm down. I’m tired of being treated as a frail child. I’m a woman, dammit! I’m woman and a soldier and I’m just as good as any of you.”
“My decision is final, Allura,” Keith stated. “Please hand over your lion key.”
“Or what? Are you going to try to take it from me?”
“If I have to,” Keith replied.
Allura looked around at the men before her. Pidge looked stunned, Lance appeared to be pissed off, Coran looked pleased and Keith looked more stern and angry than Allura had every seen him. “Fine,” she said. “Take it.” Allura forcefully removed the key from her flight suit and tossed onto the console. Without another word she left the room and entered the elevator. As it began to move upwards towards her quarters, she burst into tears yet again.
As tensions grew inside the Castle of Lions, the quiet void of space was interrupted by the appearance of three Doom battleships. The battleship Serpent’s Tongue commanded by Captain Trikiln, lead the small attack force into a stationary orbit above the planet.
“Prince Lotor, you are cleared for take-off,” the flight controller stated.
Without saying a word, Prince Lotor launched his bat shaped cruiser from the launch bay of the Serpent’s Tongue. He performed a few basic maneuvers to make sure his ship was in perfect working order before he spoke.
“Once I am through the planet’s atmosphere I was you to attack the preselected targets. This will create a diversion for me to get close to the castle. Do you understand, Trikiln?”
“Clearly, sire.” Trikiln’s voice contained no hint as to his true intentions. He was no longer taking orders from Lotor but from the king himself.
Inside his cockpit, Lotor plotted a course and entered the atmosphere. It only took a few minutes for him to travel through the atmosphere. He now flew through Arus’ clear, blue sky, his course taking him close to the castle.
“Captain Trikiln, you may fire when ready,” Lotor ordered.
“Understood.” Trikiln closed the comm. channel and directed his main gunner to fire upon the selected target.
A bright blue ion laser shot from the bow of the Serpent’s Tongue. In order to hit a target from space, the computer had to be precisely calibrated. To hit a moving target is tricky enough but to hit a flying target is even more difficult. Lucky for Captain Trikiln, he had the best gunner in the fleet at his command. He congratulated the gunner as soon as the hit was confirmed.
Lotor’s cruiser shook violently as a bright, blue light engulfed his cruiser. It only took a matter of seconds for his brain to calculate what had happened. His own men had fired upon him. Lotor struggled to maintain flight as systems began shutting down. He cursed under his breath as he struggled with the dead controls and the lake that housed Blue Lion quickly grew larger before him.
Cossack sat in his command chair looking out over the scene before him. The battle over Allebas was going just as he had planned. The 98th Battle Group was winning the fight so Cossack had no need to move his fleet into battle position. He kept his ships positioned just behind Captain Nettop’s fleet.
“Commander Cossack, a priority message coming from the planet.”
The comm. officer’s voice broke Cossack’s concentration and without acknowledging the officer, he activated his comm. system.
"Commander Cossack, all has been prepared. We simply await your order,” said the voice of Lord Tivcon.
“Excellent,” Cossack said. “Wait five standard minutes and then launch your counter offensive.”
“Understood, Tivcon out.”
Cossack closed the comm. channel and began ordering his men. “All ships, you will concentrate your fire upon Captain Nettop’s fleet. The reason for this is deemed classified; I cannot share with you this information. However, your actions will not only prevent undo damage to the planet’s valuable resources that King Zarkon wishes to be captured, but you will also be saving the Empire.”
Captain Nettop did not have time to react. The attack on his fleet had not come from the planet like he had anticipated but from behind him. In a matter of moments his fleet had been shredded. Now, more forces were arriving from the planet and his battleship was the only one left. As a child he had often admired the great heroes who stood tall and fought hard in the face of death. He often wondered what went through their minds as the end closed in around them. In these final moments, he now understood.
