Horie took care of the final transaction and secured the front for the drug operation. The building was located in a semi-busy part of town. The previous renters ran a silk shop, though the building was thoroughly swept clean to allow for immediate occupation.
The owner of the building didn’t ask too many questions, and was satisfied as long as he received the rent payment in advance and a verbal guarantee that the new renters would tend to any needed structural repairs from the point of rental. That was easy enough to convince Horie to settle for the location.
It was time for Horie and Mitsu to set up the outward business and ready the establishment for the underground operation as well. The building was perfect to front the opium that was were due to arrive from Kyoto in a few days. The shipment of storefront furnishing was scheduled to arrive tomorrow on the train. Mitsu was looking forward to organize the shop and operate the storefront's business, while Horie couldn't wait to begin the covered operation.
“Everything’s going according to schedule and plan,” Horie said to Mitsu as they walked toward the *jinrikisha that carried them to the new location. Horie turned to Mitsu and lowered his voice and said, “All that is left for me to do is take care of the rival operation here in Tokyo, so that the Kyoto suppliers will be forced to lower the commodity for us.”
Mitsu dreaded the plan, but she had no say as to how Horie chose to handle running the business from his end. Her role was to play puppet, whenever Horie should decide to use her for business, or for pleasure, for that matter.
“Here is some money to prepare the shop with,” Horie said as he handed Mitsu a small silk piece of cloth that contained the cash. “I’ll take care of the next item on our agenda and meet with you later.”
Mitsu received the cash, bowed and launched into the next phase of the set up.
After giving directions to the driver, Horie climbed aboard the jinrikisha. It was still early in the morning which meant the merchants were just beginning to open shop. The timing for Horie to tend to his next task couldn’t be more perfect. With none of his pawn-men to deploy on this mission, Horie took pleasure in tending to it himself.

Sano stepped out of his old resident for the last time. With all that he owned hiked on his back, he faced the dilapidated structure he called home for awhile, bowed and said out loud, “So long dump! I’m moving on!” Gesturing a wave goodbye with his right hand, and his possession thrown over his shoulders in a sack and held onto with his left hand, Sano began his journey out of the hustle and bustle of the city.
The young man was glad to be faced with a new challenge. The way his life was going it involved drinking and gambling with no end in sight. He didn’t have a reason to live any other way, so it didn’t seem to matter what he did. Nobody cared about what Sano did with his life, except for Kenshin. Beside the fact that Kenshin left Sano behind without so much as an explanation when Kenshin went to Kyoto to chase after Shishio, Kenshin was busy tending to his own life preparing for a future, presumably with Kaoru.
Instead of taking the straight roadway to the dojo, Sano decided to take the long route that bended around the main road where Saitou lived. “Since it’s on my way, I may as well stop off and see if that old wolf is at home,” Sano verbally justified himself and snickered slyly.
Sano was excited about starting out fresh and with Saitou being a part of the new beginning just made Sano’s new venture even seem better to him. Actually, Saitou was the reason for this sudden change in Sano. He would have fought the urge to be doing something as drastic as this, but Sano had made up his mind that he wasn't going to lose Saitou again. Not after believing that Saitou was dead and gone forever! How can Sano ever take Saitou for granted after having gone through an ordeal such as that? He could not.
As Sano added distance between he and the city. He noticed the smell of the fields and the freshness of the countryside. He looked around and there were no side street vendors, no alleyways stuffed with trash and no jinrikishas to yell at for almost running over his toes. Sano at last felt liberated, and he was looking forward to sharing the excitement with Saitou!
“Shit,” Sano’s brain did a dead-stop in the middle of that thought. “Saitou would probably think I’m being a moron if I told him how I’m feeling.” Sano shook his head and looked down at the path as he walked and sighed deeply. “Damn it, Saitou! Why do you have to be the way you are, and why do I have to hate almost everything about you?”
There were many unanswered questions that Sano still wondered about concerning Saitou being involved in his life. He kept reminding himself that Saitou and he were going to find the answers together. It wasn't like he was alone in this. Saitou was there, or so, Sano needed desperately to believe so.
“Hmmm, maybe I’ll just walk past Saitou’s place. He’d probably get pissed at me for showing up uninvited.” Sano started to doubt his initial plan. “Nah, maybe I’ll just peek in and see if he’s out taking a smoke in the garden. If he isn’t, I’ll just go to the dojo.”
Sano tried to make up his mind as quickly as possible since Saitou’s house was in sight. Sano felt like a giddy child and he was awkward about those feelings. “Damn it! Why am I feeling this way?” Sano said as he taped himself upside his head with the heel of his hand.
He arrived at Saitou’s and stood at the garden entry still contemplating whether he should slide the gate open, or not. He placed his hand on the lever and lightly pulled on the gate, but it wouldn't budge. He put a little more muscle into it and the gate gave, not without a loud creaking noise either.
“Shhhhh,” Sano held up his finger to his lips and shushes the gate. “You stupid ass hole! You want Saitou to hear you?” Sano scolded the gate, or maybe he was talking to himself again.
Nothing could be seen from Sano’s point of view as he peeked in. “Awww to hell with this,” Sano gave in and let himself into the garden and was immediately struck by the memory of his first visit with Saitou. He remembered how angry he was at Saitou for not letting anyone know that he survived the ordeal with Shishio. It seemed like ages now since Kyoto. Sano had the scars to prove his run in, first with Saitou and then with Shishio.
Sano tiptoed up onto Saitou’s porch and arrived at the door. He took another quick trip down memory lane and caught his breath at the vision of Saitou holding him against the very door he is stood at. He had never felt so powerless as he felt that night when Saitou breathed down his neck. Sano could almost feel the chills that it sent through his spine. His knees went weak and so did his heart.
Sano struggled to lift his hand up to tap on the door afraid of what Saitou will say when he opened the door only to see Sano standing there with his puppy love-eyes and no reason for his calling. He didn't need rejection–not now, not when everything was starting to look so good for Sano.
Sano didn’t want to take a chance and have it all quenched for him. Sano lowered his arm and clutched his fist beside him. A quick turn around and it was back toward the gate to exit the garden for him. Sano stepped down the porch’s platform and began his tiptoeing trek over the pebbled walkway leaving Saitou behind the door that separated them.
Sano stood fast in his tracks. Was that the damn door? Sano thought.
“Ahou, how long will you lurk out in my garden?” Saitou said as he put a cigarette to his lips and lit its tip. “I waited to see if you had the balls to see your plan through.” Saitou inhaled the smoke and exhaled a thin line of smoke past his lips in Sano's direction.
“What balls? I mean…what plan?” Sano asked, always on the defensive.
“With an entry like the one you just did, it’s a good thing you have no serious enemies,” Saitou said while he shook his head from right to left. “Tell me, Sanosuke, what is it about this garden that lures you the way it does? It occurred to me that I’ve seen you here a couple of times before, standing right in the same spot,” Saitou teased.
“Well, this time I thought I’d stop by on my way to the Kamiya Dojo. I got rid of my old apartment in town and will be staying at the dojo in turn for my help around the place since Yahiko is in Kyoto.” Sano felt like a kid having to report to an elder. In a way, it helped Sano feel secure and he was glad to be telling Saitou what was going on in his life.
“I see,” Saitou said and dropped his spent cigarette on the ground. “Then perhaps you would like some tea? It’s still early and I have nothing pressing until much later.” Saitou smiled and didn’t wait for Sano's answer. Saitou turned and walked through the door into his house. “Shut the door behind you, please.” Saitou disappeared into the kitchen behind the *shoji.
Sano didn't know what to think at this point. He was pretty sure Saitou would be sore at him for his intrusion. Sano was actually expecting to be railed on for showing up at Saitou’s door so early in the morning.
“Ahou, are you planning to lurk out there also?” Saitou called from behind the shoji.
Sano walked toward the sound of Saitou’s voice in awe at how big his place was turning out to be. This was the first time Sano’s actually been inside of Saitou’s home. Sano had always envisioned it being dark and gloomy, but it was just the opposite. Just after the entry, the room opened up to a gathering where Saitou's alcove was located. There was also a desk with writing implements on it. On the far side of the room was a pile of zabutons of various sorts of styles and colors that pulled one's attention quickly.
“Come, sit with me and enjoy my blend of teas,” Saitou invited the young man into another part of his house and poured tea for the both of them.
Sano had to ask… “So, you’re not irritated at me for coming by without checking with you first?”
“Is there a reason for me to be irritated at you?” Saitou raised an eyebrow in question. “You must learn to like yourself, Sanosuke, then perhaps you will see what others see in you.”
Since Sano was seated right next to Saitou at the round chabudai between the kitchen and the service room, Saitou caught the back of Sano’s neck and pulled Sano toward him. The urge to taste Sano’s lips seemed too intense to pass up and Saitou gave in to the urge to do so impulsively.
Sano’s kisses always tasted sweet to Saitou ever since the first kiss they shared together in the garden. Sano’s lips were soft, yet forceful and then at the same time, playful. Sano knew how Saitou enjoyed being kissed and what drove Saitou to want more.
Sano teased Saitou and baited him with his tongue just at the entrance of his mouth. Then, when Saitou tried to get Sano’s tongue into his mouth, Sano playfully withdrew luring Saitou’s tongue deep into his own mouth. It was enough to get Saitou going. The ‘bait and lure’ tactic worked in Sano’s favor to coax the wolf within Saitou to emerge. It was like being able to control Saitou, and Sano could scarcely believe that he was capable of getting the man, Hajime Saitou, to drop his guard for him.
Sano wasn't the least bit surprised that Saitou decided to move on him this morning. Saitou didn’t bark at Sano when Sano arrived out of the clear blue. Saitou’s ardent gaze upon Sano as they sat drinking tea spoke volumes to Sano and gave him a good indication that he was in Saitou’s favor, and perhaps even on the menu. What did surprise Sano was how perfect he felt with Saitou in this way.
Sano put aside his flirting kisses and drove his tongue deep into Saitou’s mouth. It was with such passion it caused Saitou to expel his breath along with a deep quaking moan. Both men entrusted themselves to this morning’s union and placed one another in each other’s custody.
“Sanosuke,” Saitou purred. Saitou broke their lip embrace and slid his open mouth down the side of Sano’s neck and purposefully bit down. It was Sano’s turn to gasp at the intense pleasure that signaled Saitou of Sano’s willingness to surrender. “Sanosuke,” I am famished and you look delicious,” Saitou murmured and bit down harder.
“Sai’…tooou…” Sano sipped air between his front teeth.

Horie entered the dimly lit shop and appeared to be looking at the sample merchandize, but in reality he was taking note of whom and where the people that he sought were. The front of the store was limited in space, and the back of the shop, by Horie’s estimation from viewing the outside of the building, was no bigger.
A tall man entered the front of the shop through the only door in the room, besides the front entrance. He bowed, introduced himself and scanned Horie from head to toe with his eyes. Horie knew that the man was checking to see if Horie was armed. Satisfied, the tall man took a seat at the far end of the room and continued to survey Horie.
Confident with his estimated head count, Horie walked over to the tall seated man and without a word, produced a *wakizashi. The tall man gasped in surprised terror, but it was too late. Horie sliced the man’s throat with a single motion, almost silently. The man dropped from his chair to his knees and held his throat. He tried to speak but the bubbling gash only spurted forth more blood due to his larynx being severed. No words came forth, only a mixture of forced air and blood from the incision. The man fell face forward onto the floor. Horie smiled at the fallen man and watched the growing pool of red liquid collect beneath the man’s head and shoulders.
Another man ran through the back room door and stopped just past the front room’s entrance to investigate the sudden commotion he heard.
Horie glanced over his right shoulder and spun quickly to his left, carefully maneuvering his wakizashi to the right angle and height to catch, yet, another victim off guard. The man had no chance whatsoever to retaliate. He was first struck across his left temple which forced his weight to the right, and in a single motion, Horie reversed his blade and used the mans momentum to thrust the wakizashi into the man’s abdomen where Horie twisted the blade upward until the man’s backbone could be felt. The man stood there for a few seconds and then dropped from Horie’s wakizashi to join his fallen comrade.
Horie quickly wiped the blade of his wakizashi, tucked it back into its hiding place and exited the building. He was on his way to make arrangements to have the merchandize that was arriving at the train station tomorrow be delivered to the new shop from the train station. The priority right now was to leave the scene as quickly as possible and put distance between he and the two slaughtered men. He walked quickly down a side alley where he left the jinrikisha and he was off to his next destination.

Saitou removed the ocha and set it beside the chabudai on the floor. Sano had a hunch about what was going to happen and looked at Saitou innocently as he admired the wolf’s expertise and fluent manner in which he managed everything. Sano only wished that he could be half as confident as Saitou.
Saitou removed his yukata and spread it out on the chabudai before him. He slyly looked at Sano hungrily and set his hand on the fabric he just laid down and ordered… “I want you to remove your clothing and take a seat right here, if you will.”
Sano didn’t have to be told a second time. He fully grasped Saitou’s desire and was delighted about the request. Sano began to disrobe, stripped off his white *Aku-gi top and then worked at removing his bottom gi.
Saitou enjoyed the show knowing that Sano was rather liberated from wearing a fundoshi. All that separated Sano and the world’s eye was the thin fabric of his gi that Sano was about to drop as he lifted his weight from sitting and knelt before the wolf. Saitou’s excitement increased as Sano teased the wolf by refusing to unveil himself too quickly. Instead, he slowly lowered the front of his gi bottom an inch at a time and relished Saitou’s eyes on his body.
Saitou licked his lips and watched Sano’s enjoyment with putting on a show for him. The wolf couldn't help but feel affection for the young man, as he had never experienced with anyone in his past to date. Sano was so eager to please Saitou and it obviously went way past the level of lust.
As Saitou thought many times before that lust was one thing between two men, but love? Was that possible? It was something that Saitou was becoming more comfortable pondering upon after meeting with Sano for the few times they've met.
Could it be that Saitou was beginning to find out for himself by experience? Of course he never gave it a thought in the past, although during his battle stricken days, where life and death had been so blurred, there were instances when many men reached out to their fellow comrades, as well as by other means, to quell the haunting uncertainty of their futures.
Sano, still holding his gi bottom up front, prevented it from falling to his knees. He managed to move himself up onto the chabudai and sat before Saitou. He placed one foot to the right of Saitou’s hip, and his other foot to the left of him of the wolf.
Saitou narrowed his eyes, tilted his head and lustfully gazed at the tantalizing offering Sano placed before him.
“Breakfast is served!” Sano sexily chuckled and leaned back on the chabudai propped by his elbows. Sano enjoyed the desire on Saitou’s face as Sano looked down past his belly and over the protruding swell just beneath the front of his pants. Sano flexed his lower muscle and purposefully coaxed his bulge to rise and fall. “Come and get it,” Sano sang teasingly, waving his lure in front of Saitou knowing that it would be impossible for the hungry wolf to resist.
Saitou reaches above the chabudai and holds Sano’s waist and let his arms lay close to Sano’s hips. Saitou looks up at Sano and tenderly grins. It is that same facial expression Sano has seen once before while riding with Saitou in the carriage out beyond the city. Yes, this time Sano is sure that Saitou is being open with his affection for Sano. Sano’s heart races when he realizes that Saitou is expressing much more than lust.
Saitou turned his head and laid his cheek gently upon Sano’s throbbing mound and encouraged Sano to push up against his face and neck. Saitou slowly rubbed his cheek and mouth on Sano’s groin and enjoyed the fabric’s friction between their totalities.
“Fujita-sir!” A rap at the entry door startled both Saitou and Sano.
Saitou immediately stood up from the chabudai. “Sanosuke, please get dressed.” Saitou softly requested.
Sano stood and secured his gi bottom, while Saitou retrieved his yukata from the chabudai and slipped his arms through the sleeves as he made his way to the door.
There is another round of raps at the front door and a call out to Saitou from the other side.
Saitou unlatched the door and slid it open “Cho,” he acknowledged and nodded his head.
“Fujita-sir, I hope I’m not botherin’ you too early, but I thought you should know that two men were skewered in cold blood downtown. It happened at one of the drug-swap locales we’ve been keeping an eye on.”
Saitou stepped outside on the porch and pulled his cigarette pouch from his pocket and lit one. “I had a feeling this was going to happen and already suggested surveillances positioned to keep an eye out on the little guys whom I predicted would be in the way of Horie’s activities.”
“Little guys? Do you mean that the big guys are already here in Tokyo from Kyoto and Nikko?” Cho questioned.
“Hmn,” Saitou nodded. “I didn’t think the action was going to start this soon, but it looks like things will get a lot busier from this point on.”
Sano approached Saitou and Cho from the open door behind Saitou and distracted Cho from their conversation.
“Well, lookie here!” Cho crossed his arms taking a step back to make sure what he was seeing wasn't a glitch in his vision. “Don’t you show up in the most interesting places, Rooster-head?”
“Fuck you, Broom-head,” Sano barked back.
“I would if I could, ‘cause it would save me a bundle of money in a long run,” Cho threw out hoping to annoy Sano.
“Yeah well, at least I don’t have to pay for what I get, unlike a loser such as yourself,” Sano said countering Cho’s attempt to push Sano to anger.
Saitou ignored the two young men locked in their verbal battle. It wasn't the first time Sano and Cho puffed up their male feathers to intimidate the other, and it certainly will not be the last.
“Cho,” Saitou said to get his attention off of Sano and onto what he was about to say.
“Fujita-sir?” Cho snapped to attention.
“I want you to set your office work aside until further notice. I have decided to use your abilities in this case.” Saitou narrowed his eyes and named three separate locations for Cho to take note of them. “They are vacant buildings that I want you to check on today and find out which of the three is being occupied by Horie Hisomu, and report back to me.”
Saitou walked up to a particular garden lantern at the entry. He pointed at it and said, “Beneath this lantern is a little compartment. If I am not here, please leave the name of the locale that is being occupied. Understood?”
Cho nodded, “Yep, you can count on your number one crime busting partner!”
“Good,” Saitou affirmed and added, “I will also make my rounds and see what more I can find out.
Cho snapped his fingers, pointed at Sano and gave him a wink. “Sorry I can’t sit around and play Rooster-head, but I got important work I must attend to.” He turned on his heals and walked toward the gate, but before he stepped out of the garden, Cho caught Sano’s last comment…
“Oh yeah?” Sano said sarcastically and then ‘flipped the bird’ straight up as a token to Cho’s deployment. “Take THIS with you, Broom-head!”
Sano turned his attention to Saitou and shrugged his shoulders. “I guess you have to be going too, huh?” Sano tried hard to hide his disappointment.
Saitou flicked his cigarette off to the side and walked into the house to get dressed. Sano just stood there for a moment. Feeling a little abandoned he lowered his head, sighed and followed Saitou into the house.
As soon as Sano slid the door shut Saitou caught him off guard and pushed him against the door with his body. Sano was surprised by Saitou’s behavior, but didn’t mind it in the least. He grinned from ear to ear. The wolf embraced him in his strong arms and secured his hold by finding Sano’s lips with his own.
Sano didn't want it to stop as Saitou pressed his body against his. It was overwhelming and caused Sano to tremble. Sano broke the kiss and pulled Saitou closer against him and pleaded, “Saitou, please…. Damn it, Saitou, don’t leave me. You have to be careful out there. I don’t want to end up losing you again.”
“Sanosuke,” Saitou breathed his name against the young man's shoulder, placed a kiss upon it and continued to say, “Can’t you see it even now?” Saitou kissed his neck. “Look at where you are standing right now.” Saitou kissed further up Sano’s neck until he reached his ear and kissed it gently. He whispered warmly, “You are now standing on the inside of this door, as opposed to standing on the outside.” Saitou pushed back from Sano and looked into the young man's love flamed eyes and said tenderly, “You have the same position in my heart and my life now, Sanosuke-san.”
Sano was in utter shock to have heard such words from the ex-Shinsengumi Captain. Never in his wildest dreams could he ever imagined it. It was so unbelievable that Sano couldn't find the words to express how Saitou words ripped through his soul. Up until this point it didn’t matter to Sano if he lived, or died. He had no real purpose, not until that moment in time.
Saitou turned away from Sano and left the room to ready himself for the task at hand and his commitment as an undercover agent for the government. Sano turned, picked up his sacked possessions and walked through the door exiting Saitou’s house. Sano sighed, swung the sack over his shoulder and continued his short journey to the dojo smiling about the wonderful rest stop he just had on his way to the dojo.
