CHAPTER 11
Takumi awoke ten minutes before his alarm went off. Moving quietly, he got clean clothes from his closet and left Keisuke sleeping. Taking a quick shower, Takumi got ready for his day job in record time. Stepping off the final stair, Takumi noticed Oyaji was giving him an odd look. Takumi tilted his head as he walked through the living room area. He grabbed his shoes to put on. Oyaji continued to watch him with the same strange expression. Takumi hoped he was not acting odd as he turned back to his father.
"Nan da, Oyaji?"
"Doesn't your friend upstairs drive a yellow FD?"
"We left it locked up at a secluded lookout. Keisuke-san was too tired to drive safely. My accident made us both cautious about driving when we're really tired."
"He still asleep?"
"Hai. He'll probably be out for a while."
"Doesn't Keisuke-kun need to get to work?"
"He trains full time to become a professional race car driver. His family owns a medical clinic in Takasaki. His ryōshin told him to focus on becoming a pro circuit driver instead of working a regular job."
"Ok. I'll let him sleep then."
"Arigato, Oyaji."
"Guess I'll have to run Keisuke kun up the mountain to get his car after he wakes up."
"I'll get Keisuke to his FD after work, Oyaji. He'll probably sleep most of the day, so you shouldn't have to trouble yourself."
"Some onna called for you twice last night. She wanted to know whether you were spending time with another onna. She sounded real mad."
"Sumimasen that Mogi is causing trouble, Oyaji. She's not happy with me."
"Typical onna. They get mad at us for the damndest things."
"Hai."
"Is Mogi the one you were arguing with on the phone yesterday before you went to train?" Oyaji asked out of the blue.
"Hai. Gomen nasai for disturbing you. I didn't mean to be so noisy, Oyaji."
"Wasn't Mogi the name of that onna who brought the cake and tree last Christmas?" Bunta exhaled smoke in a ring as he turned another page of his newspaper.
"Uhm, hai. I found out Mogi had another boyfriend while she was stringing me along. I won't date her despite her protests that she's single now."
"Is that so?"
"I don't think it's a good idea, Oyaji."
"I'll leave you to your business then. Anything you want me to say if Mogi calls back?"
"Not really. Mogi's my problem, so I'll deal with her."
"Okay."
Takumi headed out the door relieved that he had kept his cool.

Stretching, Keisuke woke in unfamiliar surroundings, engulfed by Takumi's delicious scent. Memories of their previous night of passion assailed him. Rolling onto his back, Keisuke gave his beloved's bedroom a real inspection while smiling. The first impression Keisuke had of his boyfriend's personal space was that he was even neater than Ryosuke. Takumi's bedroom was comfortable, yet bordering on barren. The room contained a student's desk with small reading lamp, and a bed. Even Takumi's walls were lacking pictures. Unlike his brother's room, Takumi had none of the books, computer equipment, or other objects he was accustomed to seeing in a tidy bedroom.
Like the man he loved to distraction, this bedroom reflected Takumi's humble personality. Glancing around the room a second time, the blond noted that the futon was missing. Even the alarm was back in its original place. He had slept through Takumi getting up to go to work he realized with a twinge of irritation.
It was after one in the afternoon he noted as he sat up gingerly. He was only slightly uncomfortable after sleeping for several more hours. He had denied the mild pain factor so that Takumi would not get upset. Fortunately, even his discomfort was almost gone. The need to use the restroom pushed him out of the comfort of Takumi's bed.
Grabbing his clothes, Keisuke dressed quickly. A few needles and small leaves fell out of his clothing. Keisuke glanced back at the bed he had recently vacated. Several tell tale signs of their previous night's location had fallen out of his hair he realized. Doing a quick swipe to clean up the tiny debris, Keisuke found himself wondering if Takumi's father had noticed when they came in that morning.
Concerned, he pondered the possible reactions he should expect from Takumi's father. Coming up with counters for the most obvious scenarios, he settled on edited truths. Mogi was a genuine problem, so he had plenty of tweakable information to deflect Takumi's father from suspicions that would endanger Takumi. The sooner he set his plans in motion to get Fujiwara Bunta on his side to block Mogi, the better.
Decision made, he left the room and moved down the stairs to ask for permission to use the bathroom. He found Takumi's sleepy eyed father sitting next to a traditional table close to the curtain that divided the store from the main home.
"Sumimasen, sir. Would you mind if I use your toilet?" Keisuke asked in a calm voice.
Lifting his head from his perusal of the newspaper, Bunta nodded. "Up the stairs. First door on the right."
Bowing his head, Keisuke replied. "Domo, sir."
He quickly returned to the upper level and used the facilities. Raking a few more needles and leaves from his messy hair, Keisuke set things to rights before he went back down.
As his foot dropped off the last stair step, the older man gave him another long look through squinted eyes. Unable to figure out Takumi's father's mood, Keisuke settled on using his most polished manners. "Domo arigato gozaimasu for your generosity in letting me sleep here, sir."
"It's nothing. So, Keisuke kun, looks like you and Takumi got into a fight last night. I'm kind of surprised you aren't in real bad shape. When Takumi gets mad enough to start throwing his fists, he's really angry."
Surprised by the comment, Keisuke was unable to hide his reaction. "Actually, it wasn't anything like that, sir. Takumi took off on an insane late afternoon mountain hike. He was very upset when I got to our meeting place for training. He snapped at me, then jumped over the rail and started walking. I followed your musuko because I was worried. We were scrambling over some big rocks wedged into a fissure among other obstacles. I finally forced Takumi kun to stop after it got to dark to continue safely. We got stuck in a little ravine overnight because we couldn't safely climb back out of the area."
"Is that so?" The black-haired man asked, lighting a cigarette.
Keisuke dropped down at the table nodding. "Hai. Since sundown trapped us on the mountain, I forced Takumi to sit and get everything off his chest. Took him a while to explain everything. Takumi's having brutal arguments with his ex girlfriend, Mogi. She's making him miserable."
Bunta nodded. "I'm relieved that you didn't fight. Takumi got suspended from school for beating the hell out of his upper classman in the school locker room when he was a freshman. Still don't know how his upper classman pissed him off. Takumi never said, and the principle never got an answer out of either shonen. Want some tea?"
"Eh? I don't want to impose on your generosity, Fujiwara san. You've done so much for me already by letting me sleep here."
"It isn't any trouble. Don't be shy, Keisuke kun. If you say iie, I can't make myself a cup."
"Ah, in that case, domo, Fujiwara san."
The dark-haired man went into the store front. Keisuke settled himself more comfortably on the floor as he waited for Takumi's father to return. His mind spun with diverse ways to handle the older man, and get rid of Mogi without causing friction. Aware that Mogi really was the major reason for Takumi's stomach problems, Keisuke firmed his resolve. It appeared that Bunta was willing to listen to him.
Once Bunta returned with the tea service, and both had cups of tea, Keisuke set his plan in motion to block his rival. "Fujiwara san, are you aware that Mogi's harassment is the reason for Takumi's serious stomach problems, and the exhaustion-caused accident he had a couple months back?"
Picking his newspaper up again, Bunta shook his head. "Takumi doesn't talk about his problems. How do you know Mogi chan's causing Takumi's depression?"
"The accident concerned my aniki and myself about your musuko's welfare, Fujiwara san. Takumi's a vital part of Project D's ongoing success. I've been keeping an eye on Takumi kun since his wreck to make sure he takes care of his health. I've noticed that Takumi still has difficulty eating, or getting enough sleep. Last night, I found out a lot about Takumi kun's stress, and it is due to his ex girlfriend."
"Gomen that my musuko's causing you trouble, Keisuke kun."
"Takumi kun has become one of my closer friends over the last year, so it isn't troublesome to me. I know that Takumi would help me if I ever had trouble I couldn't overcome alone."
"Fair enough." Bunta replied.
"I'm only worried because of the reckless way Takumi kun took off last night. He could have broken a leg, or worse if I hadn't followed him, Fujiwara san." Keisuke said.
"I heard him arguing on the phone right before he left. Figured you were the one he was fighting with when I saw you this morning."
Shaking his head, Keisuke drank from his cup and set it on the table. "Takumi explained everything while we were on the mountain. Everything went really sour the same night he took Sudo's challenge and blew the engine in hachi roku. He received a phone call that claimed his girlfriend was with another man. He found her at the mentioned love hotel with an older man who was driving a Benz the tipper told him to look for, Fujiwara san. From the rest that I forced him to tell me, Takumi still feels responsible for Mogi despite the vicious way she used him."
"How so, Keisuke kun?"
"Takumi admitted that Mogi's calling him frequently to demand that he take her back. Your musuko refuses to consider it because Mogi strung him along while seeing her Papa. He admitted to arguing with Mogi yesterday about his choice to start seeing his new crush. Mogi told Takumi kun that he's only dating his crush to get revenge for her Benz Papa. My impression is that Mogi's blaming Takumi for pointing out her cruelty and lies. I'm concerned that Mogi knows that Takumi kun has a shot at becoming a professional racer. Professional race car drivers make very good money."
"Did Takumi say that?" Bunta's relaxed, sleepy posture replaced by alert attentiveness Keisuke noticed.
"iie. Listening to Takumi kun describing Mogi's tactics gave me that impression. I've dealt with onnas very similar to Mogi. My family is well known for the Takahashi Clinic that Ojīsan opened right after World War Two. Minasan in the Akagi area knows my family is wealthy. Gold diggers are always trying to get their claws into myself, and my onīsan, Fujiwara san."
"How did Takumi describe Mogi chan?" Bunta asked, lighting a cigarette.
"Everything Takumi revealed about his fights with Mogi fits the gold digger games. The biggest clue was Takumi telling me how Mogi's insisting she'll change herself in any way Takumi wishes if he'll commit to her. Another tactic that I recognized are her frequent attacks of his choice to start dating someone else. The nonstop guilt she's dishing out is very familiar to me and my onīsan. Yesterday, Mogi said she would quit university and return to Gunma. Mogi said she would prove that she can make Takumi happy by punishing herself. Her newest head trip made Takumi kun very angry."
"So Mogi chan's coming back here?" Bunta sounded thoughtful.
"Takumi told her to stay in Tokyo and get her degree, Fujiwara san. However, I'm getting alarmed about the things Takumi said last night. Mogi sounds as if she might become a genuine stalker. If these fights continue, Takumi may get sicker, or have another accident. Mogi's nonstop attacks could insure that Takumi kun loses any chance to get a pro team's attention. I think, Takumi's too talented to fall back into obscurity because of some greedy onna's insanity."
"Good point." Bunta grunted as he snuffed his cigarette.
"If it isn't too much trouble, would you consider preventing Mogi from talking to your musuko, Fujiwara san?"
"Takumi said she's his problem this morning."
Frustrated with Bunta's answer, Keisuke shifted tactics. "If this continues, Takumi's life will get ruined, Fujiwara san. He's afraid of telling Mogi off because he can't stand to hurt her. She fed him some story about how bad her life has been. If nobody stops Mogi, Fujiwara's going to get a lot sicker. If his stress-induced ulcer gets any worse, it could eat through his stomach. Once that happens, Takumi will need emergency surgery, or he'll die."
". . . . . ."
"Trust me. I'm not inflating this problem, Fujiwara san. My onīsan and I know Fujiwara has the talent to make it to the pro circuit. We're determined to see him get there. Mogi has Takumi convinced that her life is horrible, and he's the only person that can help her correct her problems. Your musuko is the kind of man who takes responsibilities very seriously, even one that's nothing more than poisonous lies. I'm certain that Mogi's manipulating his sense of honor to get her agendas met. I'll do all I can to find a way to stop her before Takumi leaves Project D. He has a strong sense of duty that he's trying to save that little lying conniver. After listening to his problems, I know Takumi kun accepts almost everything she's telling him despite her burning him."
A heavy sigh left Bunta's lips as he rubbed his neck. "You may be right. I'll think about everything you've said, Keisuke kun. Still, Takumi's his own man. I don't like sticking my nose into places it don't belong."
"Domo arigato, Fujiwara san. I really appreciate the time you've taken to listen to my thoughts. I really respect Takumi kun, and value his friendship. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered you with any of this."
"Guess that settles it. Mogi badgered me about whether Takumi was out with his new girlfriend last night which was rude. Suppose I should tell her to stop calling."
"It would help Takumi kun's stomach to heal faster, sir." Keisuke pointed out in hopes it would sway Takumi's father's choice.
"Would you happen know anything about this new girlfriend of Takumi's?"
Aware that he needed to answer, Keisuke thought fast about how to deflect Takumi's father without getting Takumi into trouble.
"Hai. Takumi kun recently started dating someone who honestly loves him, Fujiwara san. They believe in his dreams, and do all they can to support him. Money isn't on their radar since they have plenty of it."
"Takumi's found himself a rich girlfriend?" Bunta sounded baffled and pleased simultaneously.
Gritting his teeth over getting called a girl, Keisuke settled on a single solid nod. Bunta picked up his cup and knocked back the last of his tepid tea. He poured another cup for himself as Keisuke followed suit. He was relieved that he had found a way to keep his involvement with Takumi a secret while reassuring Bunta that Takumi was in a stable relationship.
The phone began to ring. Setting his newspaper aside, Bunta picked up the receiver.
"Fujiwara Tofu Shop."
Fujiwara senior's brows beetled a moment later. "Takumi's not here, Mogi."
Fury surfaced before Keisuke could get a complete handle on his reaction, he was standing beside Takumi's father. "May I, Fujiwara san?"
A lifted eyebrow greeted his request for the phone. "Mogi, Keisuke kun is Takumi's teammate. If anyone knows Takumi's whereabouts last night, it's him. Ask him since he's the one who knows." With those words, Bunta handed the phone to Keisuke.
With a nod and tight smile, Keisuke took the telephone receiver from Takumi's father. He was getting handed a golden opportunity to get rid of Takumi's biggest headache. He lifted the phone to his ear and began speaking. "Moshi moshi, This is Takahashi Keisuke. Is this Mogi Natsuki, Takumi kun's ex girlfriend?"
