A string of smoke trailed above his head. Sanzo had gotten sick of the usual racket in the camp with the other three; especially out in the woods in the middle of nowhere. Hakuryuu still rout of commission until Hakkai was able to completely get him free. When Sanzo left the campsite, Gojyo had done his usual bullshit to stir up that damn monkey causing an argument which gave him a headache. Without saying a word, Sanzo left the three alone and walked into the woods to have his cigarette in peace.
The leaves began to rustle violently through the night air. Strange, there didn’t appear to be a breeze. He then sensed strong, violent energy coming from the direction of the disturbance. He remained calm, fairly certain it was Kougaiji or even his irritating sister trying to scare him in a weak ambush attempt.
The closer the demonic aura got, the more he became concerned, especially since he hadn’t been able to fix his banishing gun; and using his scripture took a lot of energy out of him. The trees suddenly bent and contorted unnaturally, creating a wide open path as a demon made its way towards him.
Sanzo turned his head in the direction of the noise, recognizing Tsuki, but she was different. Her eyes were black, opaque demonic markings displayed in simple patterns along the side of her face and arms; not quite filled in, but enough to know she was transitioning to a new form. Sanzo hadn’t been entirely certain when they met earlier, having sensed the aura of a goddess about her, but this confirmed his suspicions of her being half demon; and those gauntlets on her arms were her power limiters.
Tsuki stared at the monk, the glow of the moonlight reflected off his golden hair giving him a halo. His calming presence irritated her as she flexed her fingers, showing her pointed nails as Sanzo looked at her from the corner of his eye. She curled her lip, giving him a low growl as she took on an attack pose.
“I’d advise against that,” he called out.
“What,” Tsuki cried out, her fangs extended further than normal, her nails like sharpened daggers.
“You’re about to go down a path you may not like and part of you clearly knows that.” Sanzo blew a plume of smoke, gesturing to her arm bands. “Otherwise those things would have been destroyed long ago I’m sure.”
Tsuki looked down at her gauntlets, noticing small cracks at the elbow and wrists of the restraints. She looked back at Sanzo, her irritation only growing. Tsuki lunged at Sanzo as he sighed heavily, side stepping her nails. She cried out in frustration as she swiped at him again. Sanzo lifted his arm, blocking her attack as Tsuki snapped her teeth at him and jumped backward. She could sense her own fatigue, her body perhaps overwhelmed by the sudden surge in her demonic energies.
Tsuki ran to him again, her arm cocked back as she prepared to swipe her nails at him again. As she threw her arm at him, Sanzo sharply grabbed her wrist, turning his back to her as he used her momentum to throw the angry half breed over his shoulder. Tsuki cried through the air, flipping herself over and landing on her feet as she glared at the monk.
Sanzo cursed under his breath, having dropped his cigarette into the dirt. He reached into the arm of his robe, searching for his cigarettes. “What’s your deal,” he called out to her.
“What?!”
“Homura,” he began as he took out his cigarettes, pulling out a stick and tapping the end against the box before popping it between his lips. “You’re in love with the guy, aren’t you?” Tsuki snarled her teeth at him again before leaping at him again.
“What do you know about it?! You don’t know anything!”
“You’re right,” he replied, ducking her attack “I don’t know what your deal is, but I know pain when I see it.” Tsuki looked at him puzzled, the harsh wind circling her continued to blow fiercely. “If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha. If you meet your father, kill your father. Free from everything, you are bound by nothing. Live the life that is given to you.”
“Just what the hell are you talking about,” Tsuki demanded.
“You’re fighting for Homura when you should be fighting for yourself,” Sanzo snapped, pausing to light his cigarette and take a drag. “The other two in your group don’t seem to care whether they live or die, but you don’t seem to be on the same page as them. I don’t know what your deal is with him and I don’t care, but you’re obviously being toyed with and have only now come to realize it. That’s why you’re so pissed off when you should be pissed at yourself for not having seen it sooner.”
Tsuki’s eyes darted around, was she being toyed with? No, Homura wasn’t using her. They were all in this together. He’s acknowledged her abilities long before they met up in the Lower World. “Look,” Sanzo continued as he flicked his ashes, “fight alongside him as you see fit, I don’t care, but at least don’t let him treat you like crap.”
“He doesn’t,” she snapped.
“Then just why in the hell are you so pissed off?!”
Tsuki stared at him, trying to analyze her own thoughts as she slowly felt her rage subsiding. She stuttered, trying to come up with a reasonable conclusion. Why was she angry at Homura? Sure, he called her by her best friend’s name. Tsuki couldn’t deny she was really hurt at that moment, but they weren’t romantically involved. Was everything that happened tonight all a ruse to keep her infatuated? Would he have kissed her if she wasn’t caught off guard by him calling her by Rinrei’s name? Tsuki parted her lips to give Sanzo a response when he cut her off.
“There’s clearly a reason for why you’re acting like this, and you certainly didn’t feel this threatening when we met earlier. So if it’s not something Homura’s done, then it must be something you haven’t done.” Tsuki stared at Sanzo, stunned by his words. “Whatever,” he continued, “fight by his side if that’s what you choose, but do it on your own terms. Otherwise you just look like another one of his pathetic pawns ready to be tossed away at a moment’s notice.”
Tsuki felt her rage subside as the black faded from her eyes, returning to their original colors. Her teeth and nails retracted and the demonic markings faded as she watched Sanzo walk away from her. His words had resonated with her, and knew there was some truth to his words. The glow about the monk that irritated her before was now calming as Sanzo continued on his way. There was something about him that reminded Tsuki of someone in her memory from long ago. She couldn’t put her finger on it, but she was certain she had seen him somewhere once before; someone with blonde hair just like the monk.
Tsuki watched as he disappeared through the thick brush, likely back to that band of misfits. The cool night air caressed her heated skin, his presence left the atmosphere calm and serene. She looked down at her arm bands, noticing the hairline cracks that had formed. She could’ve tapped into her demonic blood at any time long before these restraints were strapped onto her, so was it truly her desire to refrain from fully giving in to those abilities? Or was it the power of the limiters that stopped her? Sanzo said it was her conscious decision, but she felt skeptical of the remark.
Tsuki could still feel the demonic energy coursing through her. Uncertainty swept over her thoughts about the lethal potential she possessed with this power. She was going to have to find a way to stay in control. With a sigh, she retraced her steps to locate her dragon near that field. Being within such close proximity of the demon that rejected her still stung, but Tsuki wouldn’t abandon her loyal companion.
•
Dawn began to creep along the horizon as Tsuki approached the steps of Konran Tower. The doors snapped open as she approached as she briskly walked through the threshold. The air about her was different to the few followers Homura permitted to stay within the castle. Showing her respect was one thing, but the look on her face and the confidence in her steps, it was almost terrifying to them; made them uneasy as they cowered and kept out of her path.
Xenon walked into the main room to see what the fuss was about, almost taken aback by the threatening atmosphere that surrounded the half-breed.
“Where did you go,” he asked.
“Homura,” Tsuki began, “where is he.”
“What’s got you all worked up,” Xenon asked. Tsuki shot him a glare that was almost intimidating to him.
“I won’t ask again,” Tsuki firmly stated. Xenon chuckled to himself, dismissing the threat and just thumbed over his shoulder.
“He’s probably in the main hall or up in his room. I ain’t his keeper.” Tsuki brushed past him, briskly walking towards the main room. “What’s her deal,” Xenon thought to himself, “Wonder what happened last night that’s got her panties in a twist.”
•
The doors to the main hall burst open, a strong gust of wind powered by Tsuki’s aura whirled throughout the room. Homura lost grip of his map, almost startled by the loud thunk of the doors as they were forced open against the walls. Tsuki walked into the room with a demanding presence he had never seen from her before.
“Tsuki-”
“No,” Tsuki’s voice bellowed throughout the room, another howling burst of her aura scattered papers across the room. Her hair framed her face, exposing both colored eyes as she glared at Homura. She approached him with firm steps, making it clear she would not be smitten by his kind words. “It is my time to speak and you will listen.” Homura squared his shoulders, turning to the angry half-breed as the winds calmed. “Since we reunited, I thought you had grown fond of me and perhaps reflected my feelings. But now I see Rinrei is still alive and well within your heart. I miss her as well, but I will not be a substitute for her. I will work towards this new world, but without you.”
Homura’s eyes widened; he opened his mouth to speak as Tsuki cut him off. “No!” Tsuki drew her arm diagonally up, the wind howling at her action. “You will not say a word!” Homura’s eyes shifted about the room as the wind whistled loudly with Tsuki’s anger, her hair flailing wildly. “After all this time,” she continued, “I see that you have been twisting my feelings and using me. I doubt you even give a damn about me.” Tsuki closed her eyes, taking a few deep breaths to maintain control as the winds calmed, the papers settling throughout the room. “I am done being your pawn.” Tsuki firmly stated before turning on her heel and heading towards the door.
Homura’s mind raced, watching Tsuki leaving gave him flashbacks of being alone, locked in his cell. It’s true he still loved Rinrei, but he needed Tsuki. “Tsuki, wait,” Homura cried out as he grabbed her wrist. Tsuki tore herself from his grip as she glared at him. There was a look of sadness in his eyes, she could tell that Homura knew she was serious about leaving him. “Please.... please don’t go,” he pleaded. Tsuki bore a death glare at him as she watched him fumble to find the right words, whatever that could have meant.
“Well,” Tsuki began, “I’m waiting to hear a reason why I should stay.” Homura remained silent as he tried to recompose himself, shocked by the half-breed’s change in attitude. He could feel she was slipping away from him with his silence. Tsuki let out a disappointing sigh at his delayed response. “I chose to work by your side because I’ve been in love with you for centuries, Homura. I know you haven’t been oblivious to that and I allowed my emotions and my training to cloud my rational thoughts. I’ve been thinking about it and now that I look back, all this time I was delusional; thinking that you truly did care for me and that I could somehow have a place in your heart. I see now that you just wanted me by your side because you care about my skills as an ally rather than risk me being your enemy.”
Homura looked shocked by her comments, almost as if he was dumbfounded as to why she continued to stay with him all this time. “Tsuki,” he began, trying to be careful with his words, “I am truly sorry. We have been through so much together but I need you to remember something.” Tsuki sharply took a few steps back, prepared for him to turn this around on her. “This goal is so much bigger than you or I, please realize that we probably wouldn’t even be doing this if not for what was done to Rinrei.”
Tsuki felt a painful sting in her chest hearing him turn this on to Rinrei. Homura took cautious steps towards Tsuki as she processed his words. “You know it’s true. While we both despised how Heaven treated us both, Rinrei was ultimately the catalyst for all this. Her unjust punishment leading to her death is our motivator.”
“So you don’t need me,” Tsuki spat out.
“Don’t misunderstand,” Homura calmly replied, trying to maintain his composure, “you and I both know we will get more accomplished together than separately. If we were to part ways, it would be easier for Heaven to come after us and throw us back in those dark prison cells.” Tsuki’s eyes darted as she considered her options. She was a prisoner under her uncle without realizing it, and then a prisoner because of his double life she didn’t know. She refused to be a willing prisoner when she knew she could have control over her situation.
“I know that you are perfectly capable of defending yourself, but we can’t help you if you are ambushed by Heaven. I understand you don’t need me, but at least depend on Shien and Xenon. They care about you a great deal despite Xenon’s attitude.”
Tsuki calmed down, seriously considering his words as he closed the distance between them. “Remember,” he continued, “this isn’t about me or my thirst for vengeance against Heaven; it never has been. This is for Rinrei, getting justice for the discrimination she faced. She didn’t deserve any of that. We’re doing this all for her.”
After some silence, Tsuki let out a heavy sigh before turning to Homura. “Alright,” she announced, “but heed my words, Homura!” Her voice was firm, echoing throughout the room as she addressed him.“I will continue to fight along side you to see this through to the end, to see the birth of the New World.” Tsuki inhaled deeply before slowly exhaling, further calming her emotions. “That being said,” Tsuki glared at him, her qi giving off a light glow as the winds began to whistle again, “if you so much as seduce me only to cause me heartache, I will bury your body so far beneath the earth’s crust not even the devil himself will be able to find you.”
While Homura wasn’t threatened, he knew she was serious. The fact that Tsuki got him to panic and lose his cool for a brief moment was a testament to just how much power she had over him, even if she didn’t know it. Tsuki abruptly turned from him, making her exit. Homura noticed an odd glint on her power limiters. He squinted a bit to focus on the oddity, noting the thin cracks disrupting the intricate pattern.
“You have gotten stronger, Tsuki,” Homura thought to himself as he smiled, impressed by her newfound demeanor. “That also explains what I felt earlier, the intensity of your spiritual energy the second you entered the castle. It will be very interesting to see what the future holds for you.”
•
As the weeks passed, Tsuki would frequently leave Konran Tower, keeping her interactions with Homura to a minimum while she trained with her new abilities. Shien offered to train her off site which she refused at first, but remembering his position up in Heaven, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone of his skill train her.
After being rejected by both Homura and Dokugakuji, Tsuki had opened the ability to teleport; something she hadn’t been able to do previously. Shien instructed her on the proper technique for teleportation as some people have gotten caught in limbo by not maintaining their focus when performing such an ability. Tsuki was just grateful that she would no longer have to burden her dragon with the task of flying over lengthy distances.
Shien was impressed with how quickly she was able to master teleportation, and even told her that someday she may even be able to bring another along with her when teleporting, however that was another skill for another day.
Tsuki also discovered she was able to make the Earth crack at her feet. Sure, she had been able to do it before, but the depth and width of the crevices she was able to create now extended several meters. Enough to disrupt the foundation of large structures, enough to make entire armies stumble and fall. Shien also challenged her to move and manipulate large boulders. It was something Tsuki struggled with at first since she was so used to using sand to carve and grind out smaller pieces of rock. But that, too, was something she was able to master.
While she still couldn’t make metal components budge, she could definitely feel a connection when she concentrated on the materials. She was somehow able to do it when she went to see Dokugakuji that night, but she hadn’t been able to recreate that same skill since. It was probably the one thing that frustrated her the most thus far, being able to sense each piece of earth forged into heavy metals, but unable to manipulate any of it to her will.
“Unfortunately, this is one area I am not knowledgeable in,” Shien stated, bringing a hand to his chin, “You really are quite extraordinary, Tsuki. Unless utilizing a sacred object, it is uncommon for demons or even half breeds to be able to shift metal alone without simply destroying it.”
Tsuki smiled at the praise, a light feeling overtaking her body. While she wasn’t his subordinate, and he wasn’t her superior, it still felt nice to be complimented by someone that was as highly respected as he was in Heaven. Shien had suggested they take a break for the time being, acknowledging her thirst for perfection but reiterated the importance of resting her body to avoid undoing all of her hard work.
Resting by a nearby stream, Tsuki sat along the shoreline. The water was almost still, as if she were sitting near a lake instead of a stream. Tsuki lightly gestured to a patch of grass next to her and manipulated the growth of a jasmine flower. She gently took the petals and sprinkled them into the stream and held her hand above the water. While the water moved at a snail’s pace, the petals of the jasmine did not budge, and like the seeing pool back at her home, the petals began to swirl under her palm.
A small image of Homura appeared in the water, he seemed to be back in Konran Tower, sitting on the ledge next to his window. While the image wavered and didn’t really hold the sight of Homura well, it was enough for Tsuki to just look at him from this distance. She was still mad at him, but there was still that part of her that wanted to be in his heart.
Shien stood over her, seeing the image of Homura in the stream. He had suspected as such, but this was proof that she was indeed in love with Homura. “You know,” he started. Tsuki jumped at his sudden appearance behind her as the image distorted and disappeared down the stream. She turned to look up to him, wondering if he had seen her watching Homura.
“I only have but one regret in life. Sometimes I feel like all the training and meditating in the universe, helping Homura, it is not enough for me to atone for my sins,” Shien commented. Was he referring to the Former War Prince? Tsuki had forgotten he was the caretaker for War Prince Nataku. “Do you recall the days of the war against Gyumaoh?”
“I do,” Tsuki replied. Though she only saw him with the War Prince, she was aware of who he was and what his position was with Nataku.
“I was not able to assist Nataku during that war and it is something that still haunts me. After what happened to him, I shut myself out from the rest of the officials and eventually abandoned my post. When word spread that Homura had been named the new War Prince, I was already prepared to devote my life to him in every way possible. To this day, I am determined to ensure I never repeat the same mistakes I did with Nataku. My resolve was strengthened when I found out why Heaven had given him the title of War Prince.” He paused, turning to Tsuki who was attentive to his story. “Homura gives me purpose. He gave me the chance to redeem myself, and I will follow him until that debt has been satisfied.”
Tsuki thought back to the last time she saw her uncle and the Former War Prince in the war chamber. She stood up and turned to him. “Shien,” she began, “my uncle was Li Touten.” Shien quirked a brow at this remark. “Who was he to the former War Prince?”
“He was your uncle?” This was something that was new to Shien as he did not know of Li Touten having any other family aside from his wife.
“Not exactly,” Tsuki replied, “he was a close friend of my mother’s. When I was young, we fell on some hard times in Heaven and he offered to bring us into his home. He was like family so I referred to him as such.”
Shien sighed heavily before replying. “I knew who he was, but I do not know exactly who he was as a person. He was a revered scientist in Heaven and referred to Nataku as his son. In reality, Nataku was nothing more than a pawn for him to gain favor with the higher ranking officials.”
Tsuki felt a lump form in her throat. Was that why he had invited them into his home? Was that why her uncle worked so hard to train her? So that he could use her and gain favor? Much of the life she thought she knew, wasn’t what it seemed. Everything that she learned only made those memories more of a burden, especially with her ignorance of what was truly going on in Heaven during that time.
Sensing her animosity and distress, Shien placed a hand on her shoulder. “Do not dwell too much on the past,” Shien began, “I know what sort of duties you were assigned to in Heaven and I know what he ordered you to do. It can all feel so overwhelming, especially since it is likely you were being used as well. Instead, use this knowledge to push yourself forward towards the changes you desire. If Homura is the one that provides that drive for you, then go to him.”
Shien gave a light smile and walked away. “Shien,” Tsuki began.
“I think that is enough for one day,” Shien replied, cutting her off. “I will see you back at Konran Tower, Tsuki.”
Tsuki watched as he teleported, she sat next to the stream and watched the water flow. The soft sound of the water gently hitting against the rocks was smooth as Tsuki placed a hand in the water, concentrating. She closed her eyes, steadying her breathing as the temperature of the water changed and her surroundings shifted.
When she opened her eyes again, she was in a large room at Konran Tower. She sat next to a large fountain, her hand in the water as a flower gently floated over her hand. As an apology, Homura arranged for an entire floor of the tower to be dedicated to Tsuki and her plants. Some walls were torn down, replaced with support pillars to let in additional light, fresh dirt was readily available everywhere along with seeds, tools, plant food, anything that she could need to tend to her plants and trees.
The highlight of the apology was a room he had created entirely dedicated to a water garden filled with lotus flowers. The various fountains and small waterfalls that connected throughout the garden made this one of her favorite spots. She hated to admit how much she calmed down due to the thought and consideration Homura put into this project.
Tsuki lightly dragged her fingers through the water, thinking about what Shien had said to her. She was still apprehensive about pursuing her feelings for Homura. The gentle caress of his hand on her skin, and the piercing sting of being called “Rinrei”, all of it was all still fresh in her mind, fighting for dominance over her emotions towards Homura. It seemed like she was going to lose her internal fight as Shien’s words only reignited the part of her that wanted to throw herself at Homura and hold him in her arms.
“He really went all out for you, didn’t he,” a raspy voice commented. Tsuki was in a pleasant mood, so Xenon’s uninvited entrance didn’t bother her. “Look,” he started, “he may be a god, but he’s still a man.” Tsuki stood up, turning to Xenon as he spoke.
“Who,” she asked.
“Homura,” Xenon sharply replied.
“Geez, first Shien, now you? What’s going on with you guys,” Tsuki asked.
“What? Look, it’s clear the guy likes you otherwise he wouldn’t go all out for you like this. Homura only keeps us close because we’re the only ones he trusts and feels he can depend on.”
“That’s true,” Tsuki replied, “but that has nothing to do with his personal feelings for me.”
“He’s never prepared a room or done anything special for Shien or I.”
Tsuki turned to him, taken aback by his comment. “You mean he’s never shown you guys any sort of appreciation?”
“Beyond words? Not even a pack of smokes or whatever Shien drinks,” Xenon replied. Tsuki turned back to her water garden, her heart rate increasing. Xenon sighed as he approached her. “Tsuki,” he continued, “I don’t know what happened between you that night, and this may sound like a bunch of bullshit coming from me, but whatever is going on between you two, fix it. If you don’t, the pain you’re left with will eat at your soul for the rest of your existence.”
Tsuki watched the features on his face soften as he stood next to her, staring at one of the miniature waterfalls. “You lost someone,” she asked.
“I did.” Xenon turned to her, seeing the look of both concern and curiosity on her face before staring back at the fountain. “My wife, her name was Mirei and she was the love of my life. I gladly abandoned my position in Heaven in order to spend the rest of my life with her. However, those high and mighty bastards weren’t happy with that.”
Tsuki bit her tongue, wanting to ask, but not wanting to pry either; she was sure Xenon could sense her unease with the story. Xenon turned to her, a look of sorrow on his face. “My beautiful Mirei was pregnant with our son, and I couldn’t have been happier. But then, one day when I returned home from hunting, I found my wife in a pool of her own blood.”
Tsuki felt her face go pale. Why was he opening up to her like this? Why were both Shien and Xenon opening up to her? Perhaps it was that they both felt they grew close enough to her that they could share such personal information.
Tsuki felt empathy towards Xenon, having no idea he would have ever suffered such a heavy loss. “Heaven had sent someone to kill her and my son. Afterwards, I felt so lost, like my life was suddenly worthless. I could provide for my family, but I couldn’t protect her or my unborn son.”
Tsuki felt the sting of tears pierce her eyes, feeling the weight of his loss. “Some time after that, I met Homura. He helped breathe life back into me. You could say that he saved me, gave me a reason to be where I am right now. Without him, I wouldn’t have been able to find the man that killed my Mirei and son, and get my revenge.”
There was a stillness in the air as Tsuki examined his face. The pain was real, she knew he was not just weaving a sob story, that Homura truly did mean a lot to Xenon. He turned to Tsuki before continuing. “You need him.”
Tsuki looked at him questioningly. “You need him because he gives you purpose, something to strive for,” said Xenon. “Didn’t you agree to fight by his side because you both have similar ideals about changing the way those heavenly bastards above treat people like us?” After a long pause, Tsuki answered him.
“Yes,” Tsuki commented.
“You’re also in love with him, aren’t you,” Xenon replied. Tsuki’s demeanor changed, a blush on her cheeks as she attempted to deny the accusation. “Your movements when you’re around him, those not-so-secret glances, your seeing pool, they all betray you. It’s obvious that Homura means everything to you.” Tsuki turned away from Xenon, embarrassed about being confronted about her feelings for Homura. Even Shien was less invasive than him.
“Look, you need to be honest with yourself. He’s important to you and if you lose him, you’ll lose yourself. The emptiness of that loneliness runs deep, and it’s depressing.” Xenon lightly placed a hand on her shoulder before continuing. “You don’t have to take my word for it, but I would hate to see someone else end up with the same fate as me; to lose someone you care deeply about and then left feeling helpless with no purpose in life.”
Tsuki looked over her shoulder, Xenon gave a smirk that didn’t make her feel like punching him in the face for once. “Go after the guy.” Tsuki smiled back at Xenon. As much as she hated to admit Xenon was right, but both him and Shien were right. While they may not all share the same story, they did all share similar feelings with her: that need to be with someone that drives you to pursue a single goal.
“I must admit,” she began, “I didn’t really care for you up until now.” Xenon laughed at the remark. “But you’re not so bad, Xenon.”
Xenon gave her a friendly slap on the back, almost too forceful for her liking. “You ain’t so bad yourself,” his voice boomed. “Welp, I’m gonna go out for a smoke. Don’t want to disturb the plant life in here.” Tsuki appreciated the gesture as she watched Xenon walk towards the exit.
“Hey Xenon,” she called out.
“Yeah, yeah, I know,” Xenon replied, waving over his shoulder, “You’re welcome, but don’t be gettin’ all mushy on me, Tsuki.
