Shade locked away another new item.
Lately her skills were being sent in a direction even she didn't like.
No longer was she in a cubicle but a private lab. The safe she kept under her desk was against Right Co. policy, but it also was something she thought was necessary.
The new modules were, in a word, painful for the recipients. Luckily, in her opinion, her sole assistant in the project had met with an unfortunate accident. No one else but Mr. Right himself knew of the project, but only she herself knew the actual progress.
On top of that, she had been using company resources for a few personal projects.
"Happy Birthday!" She heard as she opened the door to her lab room. Valencia was being thrown a party. The woman was one of the few people Gertrude actually liked within the company, and by extension, Shade did too.
She had come to avoid her other coworkers. Save for Aura, even though Shade and Gertrude agreed on the shady nature of the woman, they still counted her as a friend. She was in security, just like Gertrude, so the two trained together a little each day and there were the sleepovers, get togethers for the girls to be girls, and Gertrude loved Aura's mixed berry pie. Shade preferred the coconut with the chocolate crust.
She double checked her suitcase and searched for Gertrude. Seeing the dark Gardevoir by the door. She looked tired.
Shade gave Valencia a hug, reminded her to drop by later and hurried to scoop up her partner. Gertrude still enjoyed riding on Shade's back, even though she insisted she was too mature.
"Got us some tickets to see Loud And Mean." Gertrude smiled against Shade's hair. "Someone is excited!" Shade adjusted her hold and felt Gertrude's firm thighs a bit better. 'So am I.' Shade thought.
At home Shade removed the real experiments from her case, stashing them in pokeballs she had around for spare parts, and kept in easy reach of her bed in case she needed to make a break for it.
She stripped Gertrude of her work clothes, a fancy made suit and undergarments. She resisted the urge to touch Gertrude inappropriately. She just felt that it was something to be special if and when it happened. She did take the time to admire the female form before her until she gave in and clothed her in her natural clothes. Shade smoothed back Gertrude's hair. Lately she had been dying half black and bleaching a section just enough to turn the Orchid to pink. It gave Gertrude a punkish look that fit with Shade's less formal style at work since all members of the security team were mandated to wear suits.
"Hold me." Gertrude mumbled.
"I'll be right back." Shade kissed Gertrude's cheek before checking on Broken.
She found the Machoke of the house dozing in a chair in his room. He had really started to find his own place. He was amazing with children, doubling as a baby sitter out of the apartment. Shade had even made him a translator, he could actually speak with others and would read them books. After the day was done for him, some classical music and a book of his own choice, usually one of the classics on Gertrude's reading list.
Not to mention the three were now in a book club. Broken was a bigger hit than she and Gertrude, the club just loved Broken's finger sandwhiches.
She removed the book from his hand and, surprisingly, managed to get him into bed. She tucked him in and kissed his forehead, much like a mother would.
Returning to the girls' room, Shade slipped in behind the Gardevoir that occupied most of the bed and managed to snuggle up to her.
Shade woke up with the dawn.
Working evenings and night shifts was just easier for her, but it took a toll on Gertrude. She also had to go in again to get her pay. Mr. Right never got up before six thirty and was never into work before eight. Unless it was important.
Today was an important day.
Meetings with investors. Paying Shade. Paying Gertrude. Seeing results on the new project. Shade took one look at the tweaked FmE and sighed.
Shade had just arrived outside. The place seemed rather empty. More than usual. It wasn't unusual for the building to be cleared and secured when Mr. Right had such meetings.
Shade slipped in the side door using her card and swung by the vending machines before heading to her boss' office.
The door was open. Mr. Right wasn't present. She took a seat by the door and finished her bag of cookies and can of coffee.
There was the noise of a door being kicked in, shouts, responding barks. There was only one way out and Shade ran to it. The window, seven stories up.
She took the experiment, it might have been a decoy designed to fail, but still, she couldn't let anyone get a hold of it. She snapped it in two, tossing one half out of the window and the other half she stashed in a crack in the wall just outside the window.
The footsteps drew nearer, and on the wind she could hear sirens.
Shade chanced a look back only to see that Mr. Right had been in his office the whole time, pale, lifeless and stuffed under his desk.
She slipped out on the ledge and made her way towards the next office, it was further down the hall and around a bend. She found the window cracked. "Thank you Evalynn!" The woman had a habbit of airing her office space out considering that she had a litterbox for her Skitty.
Shade was back inside and had a slim chance of getting out before the authorities saw her. She dashed down the hall. Hopped down the stairs. Once on the sixth floor she heard the radios announce that they had found Right. They were now picking up the pace in their search. She thanked the odd layout of the building for the fact that it was essentially divided in two and she was on the half they hadn't gotten into yet.
Shade slipped into the fifth floor security room. Thankful that Gertrude had given her a copy of the key.
Several of the missing guards and the second highest level officer of the company were here. All of them dead as well. She spared a moment to mourn a few of them, Walt, Ishiro, L as she was called, and finally, the only other person who could give Shade orders, Evalynn Right herself.
Shade found the escape room and eased into it. This hollow space in the walls allowed her to vacate the facility unseen and it exited just outside the nearby park.
Shade called home. "Gertrude! Listen carefully!"
