Review Response at End of Chapter
Chapter Eleven
The Thief and The Hook
A week after the dinner at Aoshi’s Kaoru found herself her own dark-blue swivel chair
facing a brand new Pentium IV computer with plasma monitor and high graphics resolution. It
was a beautiful machine. Pure black with pretty neon green lights that told her it was on or
processing, and that was about the extent of her knowledge concerning the irrational beast. She
knew how to turn it on, move the mouse over the mouse-pad, click the buttons on the appropriate
icons to start the system or shut it down, after that, it was pretty much hopeless.
“Argh! I hate this machine.” She snarled and reached over her desk and grabbed one of
the tutorial software CD’s Aoshi had promised to provide her. “I told him this was not going to
work, but would he listen to me? NoooOooo, he thinks he’s right all the time, and no one can tell
him anything else. God, he’s such a putz. I can’t believe I let him talk me into this. Dammit!”
“Who’s a putz?” The slow drawling voice of Sanosuke Sagara drifted through the
doorway about two seconds before he did, and Kaoru’s angry blue gaze was waiting for him
when he arrived. “You wouldn’t be talking about our fearless leader, now would you?” He
smiled around the toothpick he was chewing.
“Shut-up and come over and help me with this stupid computer, Sano. It won’t pull up
the spreadsheet program like it’s supposed to and I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.”
“Did you turn it on?”
“Fuck you! Of course I turned it on.” The scowl that marred her lovely features was
almost comical. “I can’t believe you said that.”
“Yes you can.”
“Yes I can. Jerk.”
Sano laughed and walked behind her to take a look at the computer screen. “Hmm, well it
looks like you haven’t enabled your Quicken program, Kaoru. That has to be going before the
general spread sheet will come up. Did you forget to load it?”
“I thought it came with the computer? Part of the factory set up stuff. It was on the other
one he had me using ‘til this one showed up today.”
“A lot of them do, but Aoshi had this computer specifically designed just for him. The
only programs he put on it were the systems processor and the word processor. Everything has
to be installed.” At the look of bewilderment on her face he frowned. “Let me guess. He didn’t
tell you that?”
“Ah, no, he left that out.”
“Figures. Did he give you any program discs besides the tutorials?”
“Um, yeah... they’re over here.” Grunting, Kaoru reached over her desk and grabbed a
thin white box. “He said everything would be in here. I never bothered looking for anything like
Quicken because . . . ”
“Because you figured, it was already there.”
“Right.”
“That’s all right, kid. Gimme the box. Let’s see what’s in there.” She handed him the
box and he began to shuffle through the CD cases. “Hmm, there’s some interesting stuff in here.
Damn!”
“What?” Kaoru jumped.
“No porn.”
“Oh shit. Will you get serious?”
“I am serious. Here...”
“What?”
“Your disc. Just pop it in your cD-ROM and follow the instructions. It shouldn’t be too
difficult.”
“Thanks, I’ll take that as half a compliment.” She took the CD from him and opened the
case. She took the thin, shimmering piece of metal out and put it inside the computer’s tray then
pushed the button and watched it get swallowed inside the elegant black tower. “That is the
coolest thing I ever saw.”
“You don’t get out much do you?”
“Will you get out of here?” She snapped over her shoulder. “You’ve helped now all
you’re doing is being a pain in my ass.”
“And what an ass it is.” She could hear him smirking.
“Sano, I swear to God, if you don’t get out of here, I’m going to tell Aoshi you’re hitting
on me.”
“Okay, okay. I’m leaving already. Sheesh, can’t a man have a little fun without the threat
of castration hanging over his head?”
“Sure, show me a man and I’ll be sure not to threaten him.” A wicked smile caught the
tall man’s attention just as he was ducking out the door. “Thanks for your help.”
“Yeah, you know where I am if you ‘need’ anything.” He grinned and winked at her then
disappeared.
The sounds of his laughter floated up the hall making Kaoru giggle despite herself. He
really was just a big kid himself. It was no wonder The Pack glombed onto him whenever he was
around. In a lot of ways, she wished she could have had a big brother like Sano. It would have
made a big difference in her life and the way things turned out for her. A shadow of sadness
passed over her face and the smile dissolved. There were so many things she wished could have
been different. If only...
The phone rang.
“Hello, this is Kaoru, may I help you?” Aoshi had specifically told her never to say the
name of the organization. If her phone rang, the person on the other end knew where they were
calling. So whenever someone asked ‘where’ she was located and ‘what’ the name of the
business was, she would know they were not legitimate and were just trying to get information.
She took that piece of information to heart and was very careful whenever she spoke on the
phone.
“Yes, you can. Are you busy for dinner?” The sound of Aoshi’s rich baritone voice
crackled over the receiver and tickled her ear.
“Hmm, I don’t know. The man I work for is a real slavedriver. I don’t know if he’ll let
me off early enough for dinner.”
“Minx,” his laughter was pleasant. “I’m going to pick you up at your place around six-thirty, all right?”
“Okay. What do you want me to wear?”
“Nothing...” More laughter echoed over the line.
“Aoshi!” Kaoru could feel herself blushing despite the fact it was only a telephone
conversation. “You animal. Now be serious. Do you want me to put on something fancy or are
we going somewhere I can wear just my jeans and stuff?”
“Do you have anything fancy?”
“Well, I have this one dress...”
“Is it sexy?”
“I guess. Misao says it clings in all the right places.”
“Sounds... intriguing. Wear it. We’ll go somewhere so I can show you off.”
“Show me off? Hey, I’m not your prize poodle, you know.” She smiled.
“No, you’re not my poodle, but you are the most beautiful girl I know, and I want
everyone to see me with you. Is that such a bad thing?”
“No... I guess not.” Butterflies were trying to eat her stomach. “Aoshi?”
“What, Kay?”
“Do you really think I’m beautiful?” She sounded terribly young and unsure of herself.
“Yes, baby. I think you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, and I want to show
you to the whole world because I’m proud to have you with me. Okay?”
“Okay.”
“Kay? What color is the dress?”
“White. Spaghetti straps, low back and a scooped neckline. It comes to just above my
knees.”
“Sounds gorgeous–especially with you in it.”
“Thanks.”
“I’ll see you later, honey, okay?”
“Okay.” They hung up and Kaoru turned back to her computer.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
“All right, we are going to be working the upper eastside tonight. It’s Friday night so the
restaurant district should be very busy. The rich boys will be out wining and dining their pussycat
and they are all going to be trying to get some afterwards, so the money will be flowing like the
Potomac.”
“Are you really sure we can get away with this?”
“Of course, we can. You look great, and whose going to suspect someone that looks like
you to be a thief, huh?”
“I don’t know. I just don’t like this. You said we weren’t going to have to do this very
much longer. Why can’t we stop now?”
“Because, Nina, neither one of us has a steady job, and we’re still living on the streets.
Until we have enough cash stowed away for us to get a place, we’re going to have to keep this
up. Understand?”
“Okay, Sou, but I don’t like it. It’s wrong to steal from other people, and you know it.”
“I know, but we don’t have a lot of choices. Now, come on. Let’s go. We need to be in
place before the rush starts. That way we can scope out our marks and pick and chose for the
best opportunities, all right?”
“Yes.” She hung her head, but nodded in acquiescence. It was futile to continue arguing
with her brother. She knew he was right, but how she wished there was a different way for them
to make money besides stealing it. If Soujiro wasn’t such a gifted pickpocket, things might be
different. They could be starving and begging for whatever scraps of food or change they could
get. But he was blessed with the hands of a Master, and he could lift just about anything off
anyone without so much as fluttering a coat tail, and because of that, they didn’t starve.
“Hey,” he put an arm around her shoulders and squeezed her tight. “It’s going to be all
right, I promise. Have I ever let you down?”
“No,” she smiled into his big gray eyes and hugged him back. “You’ve always been there
for me, since forever ago.”
“Then stop worrying, okay. We’re going to be fine.” His hand gently stroked the fine,
dark-brown hair that fell down her back. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“I know. I just don’t like doing what we’re doing, Sou. It’s not right.”
“I know, Nina. We’ll stop soon, I swear we will.”
Her crystalline eyes gleamed a brilliant, aqua-blue as she gazed up into his earnest face.
“Promise?” She whispered.
“Promise.” Hugging her slender body close to him, Soujiro led her up the deserted ally
toward the street. “We’ll stop soon, Nina. And when we do, I’ll find a real job and you can live
in a real apartment.”
“Can I go back to school too?”
“Yes, I’ll get you back in school. I promised mom you’d finish your law degree and I
meant it, so that’s something I have to do, and I will. Don’t worry. I promise I’ll get you back
into school somehow.”
The siblings held onto each other tight as they left the alleyway and walked into the street.
They looked more like high school students than young adults, but Soujiro was nearing his
twenty-fifth birthday and his younger sister, Nina, was almost twenty-two. Pretty baby-faces
beneath thick, dark brown hair often made their true ages difficult to judge. Soujiro used that to
their best advantage by often passing them off as teenagers. It saved money and proved to be a
workable edge when he was trying to negotiate for food or clothes. Every little bit helped and he
was not above taking anything that was offered.
“We’ll take the subway up. It’s less expensive.” He said, as he led her to the stairs. “And
it will take less time than a Taxi trying to get through the traffic.” She nodded her agreement and
they ducked into the underground platform, bought their tickets, and waited for the train.
“MISAO!” Kaoru’s plaintive wail of frustration rang through the small house like a smoke
detector alarm and yanked the spunky brunette up off the couch with just about as much speed.
Racing up the stairs, she charged into her friends room and found her standing in front of the
mirror, a hairbrush in one hand, curling iron in the other.
“What? What’s wrong? You sounded like you’re dying up here, or something?”
“I am. Look at my hair.” Kaoru offered Misao a pained, defeated look and threw the
brush on the floor. “It looks awful and I don’t know how to fix it. Aoshi is going to be here any
minute and I can’t go out like this. I’ll embarrass him. What am I going to do?”
Misao giggled and bent over to retrieve the brush. “Calm down, Kay. You still have
fifteen minutes before Mr. Wonderful gets here, so let me see if I can help.”
“Misao!” Kaoru glared at the other girl’s reflection. “You have to stop calling him stuff
like that. Especially since he’s doing so much to help us out with this place and all. And besides,
he’s making an effort to be nicer to you.”
“I know, I know. I just can’t help it. He’s such an arrogant stuffed-shirt. And that one
friend of his–oh, what’s his name?”
“Kenshin.”
“Yeah, that’s it. Kenshin. Now he’s a real winner.” Misao tugged the brush through the
tangled ebony mass trying to smooth it down. Frowning when it popped right back up, she
reached for the curling iron. “Where did he dig that looser up from, The Reject Factory for
Substandard Human Beings?”
“Misao . . . ” Kaoru gently kicked her in the shin. “He wasn’t that bad. I thought he was
very nice, and pretty cute to.”
“Oh he was cute . . . even with that weird scar on his face, but his personality–uh-uh. He
is one of the biggest jerks I’ve ever met . . . next to your boyfriend.” Her smile was decidedly
wicked as she met Kaoru’s furious gaze in the mirror. “I can see why they’re best friends.”
“You just don’t like people, Misao. That’s what’s wrong with you. You wouldn’t know
a decent soul if one looked you right in the eye.”
“I would so.” The brush yanked hard.
“Owe! Hey, that hurt.” Kaoru glared at the shorter antagonist who glared right back.
“You know I’m right. If I wasn’t, you’d have more friends.”
“Fine, maybe you are right, but did you have to say it like that?”
“Maybe not, but, Misao, you really need to lighten up. You are way too abrasive on
people. You’re always on the defensive and that makes it so no one can get close to you. Nobody
knows you like I do. No one knows the gentle, caring person you can be. All they see is the
snapping, peevish weasel you show them.”
“Hey, I am not peevish.”
“Yes, you are. And you’re vindictive too.” She turned to the frowning girl and put her
hands on her shoulders. “You are such a sweet person, and you’re the best friend I’ve ever had in
my whole life. Why can’t you let other people see that part of you too?”
“I don’t know.” Throwing her hands up in the air, Misao plopped down on Kaoru’s bed.
“I guess I’m just afraid they are going to hurt me, you know. I’ve known you since I was six
years old. We grew up together so it’s easy to let you in, but other people? That’s hard.”
“I know, honey.” Kaoru dropped down beside Misao and put her arm around her
shoulders. “It’s hard for me too, but I’m so scared I’m going to end up being alone . . .
sometimes I make myself take that chance. I have too. That’s what I did with Aoshi, and I’m so
glad I did. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Misao. I–I think I’m falling in love
with him.”
“No... really?” Sarcasm was one of Misao’s best character traits, and it always made
Kaoru laugh. “Oh Kay, I wish I could fall in love with somebody. Not necessarily somebody like
Aoshi, but somebody. I want to know what it’s like to float on cloud nine... at least for longer
than a couple of weeks. I never have a boyfriend longer than a couple of weeks.”
“And you say I need to pet my ‘dogs’ more often.” Both girls started to laugh. “You pet
yours too much and put them on too short a leash. They feel smothered, Misao. That’s why they
don’t stay.”
“Really? You think so?” Her large blue-green eyes were round with astonishment. “I
never thought of that. Am I really that possessive?”
“In a word... yes.”
“Crap. No wonder I can’t keep a guy. Argh!” She threw herself back on the bed and
covered her face with one of the fluffy pillows. “You better hurry and get dressed, Cinderella.
Prince Charming will be here any minute.”
“Are you done with my hair?” Kaoru jumped up and looked in the mirror. The wild mane
of unruly curls was smooth, glossy, and laying down her back in a shining wave. “How the hell
did you do that?”
“Bibidy-bobidy-boo.” Was Misao’s muffled answer followed by a string of giggles.
“Now hurry up. He’s not going to wait all night.”
Kaoru grinned, giggled, and reached for her white dress. She shimmied into it and let
Misao do the low zipper up in the back then turned to scrutinize herself in the mirror. Her ebony
hair cascaded over her shoulders in a tangle of glistening curls that stood out in stark contrast
against the pristine white of the dress. Dark blue eyes gleamed like polished cobalt in her face and
she smiled. For once she approved of her own look. She just hoped that the man coming to pick
her up would as well.
“Do you think he’ll like it, Misao?”
“If he doesn’t, he’s dead.” Was the flippant reply as the spunky brunette darted out the
bedroom door. “I think I heard somebody knocking. I hope you’re ready, Kay.”
“Me too.” She sighed and gave herself one last perusal in the mirror. “Me too.”
Downstairs Misao jumped off the bottom stair and bounced to the front door. It was the
new one Aoshi had ordered for them so she got a quick look out the fancy peephole before she
opened it. ‘Damn,’ she thought, blinking a few times. ‘Why the hell does he have to be so
gorgeous? It just isn’t right that a guy that ornery, should look that good.’ She shook her head
and grumbled under her breath.
“Remember to be nice, Misao. He’s your best friend’s boyfriend.” Then she yanked the
door open. “Hi there, Aoshi. What’s hanging, man?” ‘Oh my God! Did I say that... to Him?!’
“Your jaw, Misao.” He cocked an eyebrow at her and stuffed his hands into the pockets of
his leather trench. “Can I come in?”
“Ah, yeah... sure thing. Come on in. Kay’s almost ready.” ‘Shit! You really blew that
one, Misao.’ “You want something to drink or eat or... whatever?” She shut the door and
offered him an embarrassed smile.
“No thanks. I’m taking Kay out to dinner so I’ll forgo the offer of food, but thanks
anyway.”
“Not a problem.” ‘Geez, shut-up already. You sound like a total idiot.’ “I think I’ll go
upstairs and see what’s keeping her. I swear she was all but ready five minutes ago.”
“Uh-huh. Why don’t you do that. I’ll just wait here if that’s alright with you?” Aoshi
smothered a grin when Misao furiously nodded her head and beat it for the stairs. “Don’t trip,
Weasel. I’m not into picking up road-kill you know.” He watched the girl throw a furious look
over her shoulder as she disappeared and he chuckled. ‘She’s just way too easy.’ He thought.
When Misao entered Kaoru’s room she was stomping and her face was red. “Do you
know what an asshole your boyfriend is?” She raged.
“Yes, Misao.” Kaoru rolled her eyes. “You tell me constantly. What did he do now?”
“He called me ‘road-kill’.”
“He called you... roa...” Kaoru couldn’t finished as she was attacked by a fit of giggled
that stole her voice. Misao just scowled and threw herself on the bed.
“Get out of here,” she grumbled, pulling the pillow back over her face. “Prince Charming
is waiting for you downstairs, and if I were you, I’d hurry before he changes back into a toad. It
could happen any second now.”
Kaoru giggled and gave a playful tug on her friends exposed elbow. “Thanks for your
help,” she tugged harder. “I couldn’t have done it without you.”
“You’re welcome, now shoo... he’s just waiting for his jaw to drop off when you come
down the stairs. Don’t disappoint him.”
“Have fun with the TV...” Kaoru grabbed her trench and skipped around the edge of the
doorframe.
“Yeah, and you have fun with the Ice Man. I bet you can thaw him out in that dress.”
“Don’t need any help in that category, Misao. He thaws out just fine all on his own.”
“Shut-up.” Misao’s bit hard into the pillowcase as she listened to Kaoru’s giggles fade
away. ‘It’s just not fair. Why can’t I have that?’ She groaned and threw the pillow across the
room. ‘I hate men!’
‘Come on, Kay. We have reservations at seven...’ Aoshi glanced at his watch and then up
the stairs. ‘So much for ‘almost’ being ready, women.’
“Here I am, sorry I made you wait.” Kaoru bounced down the stairs, the hem of her skirt
fluttering around the tops of her thighs. “I didn’t make us late did I?”
“I, ah... no, no...we got lots of time, honey.” He took her coat and held it open while she
shrugged it on. His chest tightened when he caught a glimpse at the large amount of bare flesh
that was exposed by the dresses low back, and the subtle scent of jasmine coming off her hair
made him want to bury his nose in her nape. “You look beautiful.” He said. “And the dress isn’t
bad either.”
“Thanks,” A bright, pink blush stained the pale skin of her face as she glanced coyly over
her shoulder. “I’m glad you like it...the dress I mean.”
“I like that too.” His hands settled on her hips and he dropped his chin on the shelf of her
shoulder. “But I like what’s in it better.”
“Aoshi, quit. We have reservations...you said so yourself.”
“Did I? I don’t remember.” He nuzzled her earlobe and chuckled when she trembled
against him. “Does that mean you’re hungry, Ragdoll?”
“Yes.”
“Good, so am I.” The tip of his tongue darted out to taste the soft skin of her throat and
he tightened his grip on her hips pulling her back into his hips. “I’ll have a plate of ‘Kay’...rare.”
“Aoshi!” Kaoru giggled and wiggled out of his grasp dancing away from his heated
embrace. “I want dinner first then you can have dessert. Okay?” Her eyes were a dark midnight
blue that held a wealth of promise in their smoldering depths. “I’ll even spring for the whipped
cream.”
“Whipped cream, eh? I’m a bad influence on you, aren’t I, Ragdoll?”
“Definitely. The best bad influence I ever had.”
“Want me to change?” He stuffed his hands back into the pockets of his trench, cocked
his head at her and offered his best boyish smile.
“Don’t you dare.” The distance between them was swallowed in three scittered steps of
her high heels. “If you even think about it, dessert’s off.”
“Mouthy bitch,” he growled grabbing her around the waist and hauling her hard against
his chest. “I’m going to have to do something about that sassy tongue of yours.”
“Like what?” She traced the sensuous curve of his lower lip with her finger and then
caught her breath when he nipped it lightly between his teeth.
“Don’t tempt me, minx.” He sucked her finger for a brief second to soften the sting and
then swooped past her hand and brushed his lips over the tops of hers. “If you get me going,
we’ll definitely miss our reservation.”
“We could always go later...”
“Kaoru.” The pale ice of his eyes glittered with barely repressed passion as he gazed
longingly at her beautiful face. “Later is for your whipped cream...and don’t think I’m going to
let you forget you said that either. Because I won’t.”
“You better not.” Her mouth hovered close to his and her hands tenderly massaged the
smooth, clean shaven flesh of his face. “I’d hate to have to punish you for not listening to me.”
“Minx.” Crushing the tender softness of her mouth beneath his, Aoshi pulled her all the
way into his arms and held her close. He was going to have to do something about this problem
they had. It didn’t seem to matter what they started talking about or what they were doing it
always ended up with them in bed or damn close to it. It wasn’t a natural way for things to still
be going–was it?
True, the sex was beyond anything he had ever experienced with any other woman, but
was it just about the sex? Was that the only reason he couldn’t seem to stop thinking about her
for more than five minutes at a time? Was that why he was so determined to keep her as close to
him as he could and as far away from anyone like Himura as possible?
Was it just the chemical predatory reaction of sexual partners or was there more? He told
Himura it was her honesty and passion, but was there more? Did he love her? Was he falling in
love with this unique, off kilter woman?
He released her lips and let his forehead drop to rest against hers while their breathing
returned to normal. Only she had ever been able to bring these wild, uncontrolled emotions out of
him. Only this woman made him forget who he and what he was, and because of her he was re-discovering things about himself he thought were long dead inside of him.
He was learning how to laugh, cry, and live again and Aoshi wasn’t sure how he felt about
that. Pain walked hand in hand with those things. Pain and vulnerability...and weakness, but she
didn’t make him feel weak. Instead she made him feel like he could do anything.
“Kay...”
“What?”
“I have to tell you something and I...I don’t know how to say it.”
“Just say it, honey.” She felt a wave of worry wash over her and began to gently massage
the nape of his neck. “Is it bad?” She asked.”
“No,” he shook his head and raised his eyes to look into her concerned face. “It’s just
something new for me and I’m...I’m a little unsure of myself.”
“Unsure? Why?”
“Because you’re so damn beautiful and you’ve pretty much got me wrapped around your
little finger. Did you know that?”
“I do not.”
“Yes...you do.” He laughed. “I’d bend over backwards to see you smile. Hell, I think I’d
do just about anything to make sure you always had a smile on your face.”
“So what are you trying to tell me, Aoshi?” Kaoru tenderly stroked his face.
“That you mean more to me than any other human being alive, Kay. And it’s not the
sex...well, not only the sex.”
“I know it’s not only the sex, baby.” She smiled and kissed him. “It’s not just the sex for
me either.”
“It’s not?” He searched her face.
“No, it’s not. It’s everything about you. You’re... you’re the greatest guy in the whole
world, Aosh, and... and... I...”
“You what? What, Kay? Tell me.”
“You promise you won’t get all weird on me? Promise?”
Aoshi laughed again and pulled her into a tight hug. “I promise. Now tell me.”
Kaoru buried her face inside the warmth of his throat and wrapped her arms tightly around
his neck and shoulders. “Hold me.” She whispered as she stepped as close to him as she could. A
long sigh of pure bliss escaped her as she felt his arms tighten around her and then she turned her
face just enough so that her lips were brushing against his ear.
“I love you, Aoshi Shinomori.” She said in the softest voice, his hair barely ruffled by the
breath passing over her lips. “I love you.”
