RECOVERY
Aster set aside her own problems, and prepared to deal with her sister’s. She returned to the kitchen where Chibi Usa was watching the timer, and laying out another batch of cookies.
“I bet she likes chocolate like Mamo-chan does,” Chibi Usa said.
“I bet she likes it more,” Aster said, and then turned her attention to thinking of what should be fixed for breakfast.
~*~*~*~*~
By the time Usagi brought Akari into the dining room, completely clean and dressed in one of Aster’s gold kimonos, there was a pile of cookies and a large pitcher of steaming hot chocolate waiting.
Chibi Usa was happily munching on one, and talking quietly to Thomas about religion and faith. He tried not to look at Usagi, but his eyes kept straying towards her.
Aster put several cookies on a plate, and gave Akari a large mug of the hot drink. She put a bottle of Irish cream liquer in front of her, in case she wanted something stronger than just the cocoa.
Akari noticed the signs of recent tears on her sister’s face, but she kept her silence, for the time being. If Aster wanted the younger girls to know, she would say something.
As if sensing Akari’s mood, Chibi Usa paused in her theological conversation with her future mother’s partner to look straight at Aster
“Pluto’s wrong for leaving,” she said abruptly. “I’m gonna give him an earful when he gets back.”
“Thank you, Hime-chan,” Aster said, bowing in her seat. “You misunderstand his leaving, though. He has only gone to make sure that the other Kishi are preparing to come here. He’ll come back when they’re ready, or maybe he’ll come with them.”
“That’s not why he left,” Chibi Usa said sagely. “He’s wrong, and I’m gonna tell him so.”
“As you wish, Hime-chan,” Aster said, inclining her head to the much younger girl. “Far be it from me to argue with you.”
“That’s more like it,” Chibi Usa said, smiling. “I’ll set him straight when he comes back.”
Aster smiled indulgently at the young princess, but deep in her heart, she was wondering if Takagi would ever come back. Perhaps he was tired of her insecurities and her nightmares.
Before she could follow that line of thought any further, she deliberately turned her mind to Akari’s problem.
“We need to get you some help, sister,” she told the older woman. “I can think of several avenues that we might pursue, but I want you opinion on them.”
“I know one thing that would be of great comfort,” Akari responded. “But I dare not explore it. It is forbidden to me.”
“What is it?” Aster asked. “Maybe I should ask who is it? Whoever it is, I’ll have him here before dawn, trust me.”
“It is not something that I can permit, imoto-chan,” Akari said. “Instead, I believe that you should simply find a way to help me reunite with my husband.”
"I mean it," Aster insisted. "I can have him here. Unless you mean ... "
“I said no, Aster,” Akari said sadly. “I will take my comforts where I can, from Zoisito and my husband.”
“Do you want me to call Taiyono?” Aster asked.
“Not yet,” Akari said, smiling at her sister. “Not yet. I need your help to feel more like a woman, and less like an object.”
“We can help with that,” Usagi said. “As soon as the stores open, we’ll go shopping!”
“I do not know when I will be able to rejoin Taiyono permanently,” Akari said. “If you have no room for me, Aster, then I can stay in a hotel. I have the money that Mother left me.”
“Room?” Usagi said, smiling. “Aster’s got nothing but room! There’s still several bedrooms in this house, and then there’s the house where her uncle stays when he’s in Tokyo, and there’s the house that the men are staying in, and then there’s a whole other house like theirs, and it’s bigger than this one!”
“Why don’t you live in the larger house, Aster?” Akari asked.
“I liked this house better,” Aster said. “To start with, it was only Washino, Tori, and me. We didn’t need a larger home. This house was too big. Maybe I should move to the bigger house, now that I have all the girls, and you, but there’s still a lot of room here.”
“I don’t want to interfere, Aster,” Akari said.
“You won’t interfere,” Aster told her. “I’ve been waiting, hoping they would find you. I’ve been completely out of sorts, ever since I knew that Takara had you. These girls need help, and I can’t give them all the attention that they need on my own. You did a great job, helping me. I’d like it if you stayed, at least for a while.”
“I would be happy to stay with you,” Akari said. “While I am working my way back to living with my husband.”
“It’s settled, then,” Aster said. “I have a room all ready for you, and after the other girls get up, then we’ll all go shopping.”
“What are we going to do in the meantime?” Akari asked.
“Usagi and Chibi-Usa are going back to bed,” Aster said. “Tsuki is going over to the other house and back to his bed. You and I will go do something we never had the chance to when we were growing up. We are going to sit up eating cookies and having a girl-talk marathon.”
“Why can’t we stay, then?” Chibi-Usa asked petulantly.
“Because Akari and I have to talk about things that you don’t need to know,” Aster said. “Tell you what: you three can stay here if you don’t feel like going to bed. You go ahead and keep talking. Akari and I will move out to the solarium. I don’t want you eavesdropping on our conversation, either.”
“Okay,” both girls said in unison. They watched while Aster pulled another pitcher out of the cupboard, filled it with hot cocoa, and handed the pitcher and two cups to Akari. Aster picked up two of the plates of cookies and led the way to the back of the house.
~*~*~*~*~
Out in the solarium, Aster put the cookies on a table between a pair of chaise lounges, pulled a couple of blankets out of a teak chest and then handed one to Akari before she sat down and covered herself against the cold.
“Where is Pluto, Aster?” Akari asked as soon as her sister had settled.
“The remaining Kishi are still overseas,” Aster said carefully. “He went to hurry them a bit, and make sure that nothing goes wrong or gets forgotten.”
“He should not have left you,” Akari said. “He knew you needed him, right now.”
“He said he was giving us some time alone,” Aster said. She felt hot tears pricking at her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.
“We do not need time alone, Aster,” Akari said, pouring two cups of the hot cocoa. “You need him here.”
“Well, he’s not here,” Aster said. She took the cup that Akari offered her, and then took a large bite of cookie to avoid having to say anything else.
“I see that,” Akari said. “My point is, that he should be.”`
“Okay,” Aster said, willing to let it slide for now. “Now, for your problem, the most direct route would be for the two of you to go somewhere secluded, and work on it until you get back together.”
“You know me better than that,” Akari said. “Taiyono would be a gentleman, as he was taught, and we would never get anywhere.”
“I’ll have a talk with Taiyono,” Aster said. “I know what to do. You leave him to me. I’ll set up everything for the two of you.”
“What are you going to do?” Akari asked, worried that her sister was going to do the wrong thing.
“I’ll give Taiyono detailed instructions on being a proper Japanese husband,” Aster said. “He’ll be commanding, you’ll be obedient in spite of being afraid, and then you won’t be afraid anymore.”
“What about you,” Akari said. “What about your problems with Pluto?”
“I can take care of myself,” Aster said. “I told you, he’s just gone to get the rest of the Kishi. In the meantime, I have an audition at the Philharmonic tomorrow. I’ll have plenty to do, between my projects and the girls.”
“You have been waiting for him since you were five,” Akari said. “That is a long wait, to give up now.”
“I’m not giving up,” Aster said.
***** *****
One month later.
Aster watched her sister talk to Vincent in the Zen garden. Akari was still living with Aster and the girls, but she was not afraid to spend time alone with her husband, or with any of the Kishi.
Aster sighed in a mixture of happiness and pain. Akari would not be staying with her much longer. Usagi was dating Mamoru again, and they were seriously talking about when to get married. That meant that Usagi was going to leave her, too.
Almost a month had passed since Takagi had left. Aster felt his absence keenly. She felt very much like a part of her self was missing. To make matters worse, Kunzite had not visited her in over two weeks.
On the positive side, Haruka and Michiru came to see her frequently, and they grew friendlier with each visit. She found herself hoping that it was a sign of things to come.
Even with all of the other Senshi around her, Aster felt alone. She sorely missed her lovers, but she knew, deep in her heart, what the source of her disquiet was.
Her planet partner. Her sister’s husband.
The power in her longed to join with the power in him.
She reached for the phone, and then drew her hand back. She wanted to talk to Setsuna, but she had no idea where the Senshi of Time lived, and no notion of her phone number.
She smiled in spite of her own troubles when Taiyono pulled her sister into an ardent embrace, and Akari returned it just as fervently.
“She’s much better,” Usagi’s voice at her side startled Aster.
“Yes,” Aster agreed. “She might be moving soon.”
“That makes you sad,” Usagi observed.
“Only because this is the first time we’ve lived together without being afraid,” Aster told her. “For the first time, we can do what we want, not what will keep us safe from Takara’s anger.”
“She won’t be far,” Usagi reassured the older girl.
“I know,” Aster said. “It’s not that I’m not happy for her, Usa-chan. It’s that I’m feeling sorry for myself.”
“Kunzite still hasn’t shown up?” Usagi asked her.
Aster looked at her future queen sharply. She had not realized that her nighttime rendezvous were common knowledge.
“Chibi-usa says not to worry,” Usagi said quietly.
“Chibi-usa can’t tell my heart to stop aching.”
