winterfrau: I'm glad you liked that line. I've fallen in love with the idea of a flirtatious Tres. And yeah, the whole situation is just.... bizarre, isn't it? I try ;)
Darkephoenix: Well thank you for the continued support! Especially since I went totally AWOL on this story. I totally lazed out over spring break. I say around and did NOTHING. I hardly even ate. *hides in the corner* Don't hate me, I love that nickname! I had to use it! My Muse insisted! *points at him and runs away screaming like a madwoman* Hope you don't mind ;)
DarkCrusnikMagician: I'm glad you liked it. Boy, Abel can really royally screw up, but he can really royally make up too. When they really REALLY make up, it's gonna be MIND BLOWING. lol yeah, I was wondering how many actually suspected the sex of the third child to be female. And yeah, I can't stand real children either, that's why my fictional chilluns will be perfect ;) If i do I will let you know. I'll look over the last chapter another time (it's 2am) and email you the translations. Sorry, but I'm tired. This time, it translates to "What's wrong?" It takes a lot more french to say that than english. lol Enjoy!
Astharoshe: That's okay! Welcome back and thanks for reviewing! Glad you enjoyed, and I will begin attaching translations to all chapters! :> Enjoy!
So.... I was headed to the bank, and I TOTALLY saw this guy that had a DEAD ON Tres haircut. I almost crashed into the car ahead of me. Too bad when he turned around he wasn't that hot looking :/
Chapter 11: Play Time Is Over
Alex and her children began a game of hide and seek, ignoring the others that followed them into the garden. Alex was like a completely different person, laughing and playing with her children in the late afternoon sun. Walter and Seras looked as though they were itching to join them, and Abel was wearing a curiously dichotomous expression, making it hard to tell if he was happy or heartbroken. After some minutes of being chased by her brothers and her mother, Aurora stopped dead, turning toward the group, looking at them with a strange expression.
“Qu’est-ce que c’est le problème, ma puce?” Tres’s accent was flawless and his unexpected questioned startled those around him.
“Uncle Tres!” Aurora’s face broke into a wide grin and she ran at the auburn haired man full tilt. Tres grinned and kneeled to catch her, lifting her up as he stood and walked into the garden.
“You didn’t see me when you came into the room, Chérie?”
“Forgive me, no. I was so happy to see Momma...” Aurora trailed off rather bashfully. Though the distance between them and the Hellsing crew was growing, they could still hear the conversation quite clearly, and they all listened in, hoping to learn more about the mysterious children that seemed to appear from nowhere.
“It’s all right, ma puce.” Aurora smiled, a warm smile that seemed to hold more emotion than an eight year old should be capable of. Without mind for the group that watched them, Aurora took his face in both her little hands and kissed Tres tenderly, longer than she should have, and he allowed it fully. The members of Hellsing exchanged scandalized looks, Abel seemed not to see the interaction, and Tres whispered to the child in his arms, hoping the Vampires wouldn’t hear.
“Later, Chérie.”
“Promise?”
“Indeed, I do.” Tres gave her a grin filled with secrets and set her down, whereupon she promptly ran off to resume the garden games. Tres refused to turn and face the members of Hellsing, opting to watch over the children as they played. Cendricus came flying around a corner in plain view, tackling his mother to the ground. Alex giggled, sounding strikingly like Aurora, and flipped her son, watching as he landed a yard away on his feet. Alex rose swiftly, tearing off into a patch of rosebushes, Cendricus hot on her heels. Moments later a loud thud and a small “oomf!” issued from behind said rosebushes and Seras and Walter actually giggled. Tres turned his head a little sharply as though he’d heard something the others missed and his face shifted into a serious frown.
“Acknowledged. Lady Alexandra?” Abel seemed pulled from a reverie, taking a step toward Tres.
“Yes... Tres? Alex was obviously still wrestling with one of her children and when she stood from behind the rose bush and came around to properly speak with Tres, she had Cendricus hanging from one leg and Aurora hanging from the other. Alex disengaged them both with a couple of high steps and the children lay on the grass, panting for a moment, before launching themselves at each other. The two rolled around like a couple of warring felines while Alex tried to straighten her hair and clothing.
“Sister Kate call?” Tres nodded gravely.
“My Lady, there has been an attack not far from here. A small church has been stormed. There have been reported casualties, but it is believed that the culprits are still within.” Alex’s face sank into battle mode.
“Methuselah or Nosferatu?”
“Methuselah, My Lady.” Alex heaved a sigh, watching her children as they petered out, panting again. Ilarius hopped down from the gazebo top and approached, a look of concern pulling at his features.
“All right. Call Leon, have him watch the children.”
“My Lady, there is something else.” Tres’s voice grew quiet as though he were loathe to divulge the rest of his information.
“What is it, Tres?” Alex seemed as though any other information from here on out were utterly unnecessary.
“It has been confirmed that the attacking Methuselah wear the black uniforms of the RCO.” Alex’s face paled as she turned to Abel, a quizzical look painting her features as if this were a joke he was playing. His face was grim and he merely looked back at her. She turned to the members of Hellsing, struggling to regain composure.
“All right. This is it. We must do a little reconnaissance as well as some murder and mayhem as usual.” Tres had called Leon and he came thumping into the garden, his boots breaking the awkward silence that hung in the air.
“Hi, kids!”
“Uncle Leon!” Aurora ran into the man’s massive arms, her eyes welling with tears.
“What’s wrong, Little One?” Leon looked from her to all the concerned faces of the adults. Alex couldn’t answer and Abel wouldn’t, so he turned to Tres for an answer.
“It’s him, Leon.”
“You’re joking. Alex, you can’t go.” Leon looked to her as though she’d just admitted to forfeiting her freedom. Everyone from Hellsing but Seras looked quite confused.
“I can and I will. I will destroy his fledglings. I will destroy his entire coven. I will destroy his precious little sorcerer. When nothing is left of his beloved orden, I will drain him dry.” Alex’s face had shifted into a most frightening mask of hatred and her words chilled the people around her. Ilarius and Aurora looked upset merely because their mother was upset, but Cendricus looked crushed at her words, as though he couldn’t breathe.
“Mother?” Alex’s face immediately softened as she turned to regard her son.
“My love, you can’t hold it against me. I couldn’t life with myself if you held it against me.” Alex’s voice was quiet, pleading, asking for permission.
“But, Mother...” Cendricus trailed off, unsure what he meant to say.
“It must be so, my love. He will bring the world you love into ruination. He would destroy me, Abel, Aurora, Ilarius. He would destroy you, my precious child.” Alex pulled her son close, nuzzling into his hair.
“Can’t there be another way?”
“He has left me no choice, dearest.” Alex kissed his forehead and pulled away. “Leon, watch them, keep them safe. This may be just a terrible distraction, but we have no other choice but to address his brazen acts. Pull in some armed guards and have Kate monitor the grounds. If there is even the slightest hint of something amiss, I want immediate notification.”
“Of course, Alex. I’ll keep in contact with you. Come on kids, let’s go!” Leon tried to sound upbeat, but the children looked at him dubiously.
“Go on, children. I’ll be home to tuck you in.” Alex managed a smile for her children, but her heart sank as Cendricus cast her one more pleading look. Alex turned to Abel, looking at him plaintively.
“I need your help.” Alex’s words were so soft, Abel wasn’t sure he’d heard her right. He settled for nodding and smiling reassuringly to her. “If he is there tonight, you will witness the death of your brother.”
“Let’s move out.” Tres broke into the conversation, seemingly anxious to attend to their mission. “I have notified Cardinal Sforza.”
“Good. Hellsing, we are dealing with someone extraordinarily powerful. He may or may not be present tonight, but do not underestimate him, Alucard.” Alex turned right to him, glaring at him knowingly. “He is man made and he is durable. The best of us have taken a crack at him and come up empty handed. This is most likely a ruse. He may be coming after the Vatican, he may be coming after the children, or... he may be coming after me. He may also be after Alucard.” Alucard grinned in a most bloodthirsty manner, clearly ready for a good fight.
“I’ve been waiting long enough. Master, may we go play?” Alucard grinned at Integra and she couldn’t help but smile back wickedly at him.
“Only if our esteemed colleagues are ready to go.” Integra turned to look at Tres, Alex, and Abel. Alex nodded, her features drawn tight in anticipation.
“Let’s see what the RCO is playing at tonight.”
“There’s got to be more left than this. The report said there were at least five caretakers.”
“Well where could they be then? I’ve drained one, you’ve drained one, and we sliced up the first two.” The Methuselahs’ voices rang harshly in the quiet church as the light failed outside, illuminating the stained glass windows beautifully. Great pools and splatterings of blood were colored in odd patches here and there. A young girl hid, crouched behind a pew, her hands clamped over her mouth as she trembled in fear. She prayed quietly, harder than she ever had in her life, and was driven nearly to distraction by the shivering of her habit.
“No, I can smell one. I can smell blood.”
“Of course you can, you bloody dolt, we’ve damn near painted the walls with it.” The young sister closed her eyes tightly, a couple of tears rolling down her cheeks as she listened to their vulgar conversation.
“No. I smell fresh blood. Blood that’s still pumping.” The sneer that adorned his face was evident in his voice and the huddled nun hunched up tighter, praying harder. The Methuselah knew where she was before he’d even begun his verbal taunting. He crept over to her hiding place and seized her roughly, causing her to shriek in shock. His grip on her neck wasn’t brutal, but the girl gagged nonetheless, her feet dangling above the stoned floor. Her eyes watered and she stared into the face of her attacker plaintively, unable to even utter any last minute prayers. He pulled her close, inhaling the scent of fear that poured off her in great waves.
“Ah, look what we have here: dessert.” The second Methuselah approached and sneered at the look of panic that graced the young nun’s face.
“I don’t think I can contain myself.” Her captor tightened his grip and her face grew red, his accomplice cackling madly.
“There goes my diet.” Her captor’s fangs flashed in the twilight of the church and she cast one more silent prayer to heaven, her heart beating a crazed rhythm against her chest.
Stained glass rained down upon the trio like a divine answer to the nun’s prayers and the Methuselah turned toward the front of the church. In the next moment, Alex threw the oak front doors open wide, followed by Abel, Tres, and the members of Hellsing. Her black leather coat flared out behind her, and she clomped authoritatively into their midst, raising a gun, leveling it at the captor’s head
“Set her down nice and gentle, before I blow you away.” The Methuselah exchanged ecstatic glances.
“Did you order take out?”
“I don’t remember ordering anything, but I won’t turn down free food, especially when it looks so enticing.” The ringleader dropped the poor nun on her backside, rather indelicately, and turned his full attention to Alex, his comrade following suit. Alex adopted a dangerous grin, holstering her gun and pulling her sais from thigh holsters as they approached. Walter pulled out his wires, Tres pulled out his gun, and Seras pulled out her own massive weapon. Alucard stood grinning and Integra lit a cigarette, barely paying attention to the scene unfolding.
“All right, boys and girls, let’s erase them.”
The Methuselahs charged Alex at the same time, growling angrily at Alex’s confidence. She took them both on, dodging their flying fists and impaling them each on a sai. With a growing war cry, she charged down the main aisle way, tacking both Methuselah to the floor with her weapons. As she stood over them triumphantly, reveling in their struggling, the shadows in every corner of the church came to life, Methuselah pouring into the church to attack the rest of the group. Alex turned to the group, her eyes glittering in the growing dark.
“What are you waiting for?” Seras and Walter grinned, turning to Alucard for the word. Alucard, in turn, turned to Integra for instruction, he fangs displayed in a maniacal grin.
“Master?”
“You heard the woman, hop to!” Integra puffed elegantly on her cigarette, her sword hanging at her side. Tres, Seras, and Abel started emptying magazines into the approaching RCO members as Walter began an intricate dance with his wires. Alex leaned close to her prey, twisting her sais. They released twin groans of pain and she delighted in their fate.
“What were you really sent to do tonight?” The ringleader burst out laughing until Alex cut him of with another twist of her weapon.
“We were simply out looking for an early meal, My Queen.” He grinned at her knowingly and his face seemed vaguely familiar. Alex tried not to let this realization turn her stomach and bring back unwelcome memories, but she knew he was lying and she was here to get the truth out of him.
“Tell me, or I will drink of you slowly.” The ringleader laid back and glared at her hatefully, refusing to speak.
“Are you really his fledgling? Are you really the Queen they’ve all been talking about?”
“Shut up!” The Methuselah-in-charge reached to strike his comrade, but Alex blocked his blow, her eyes blazing with an eerie inner light. He backed down under her threatening gaze and she turned back to the follower.
“I am no fledgling of your Master’s. He forced the change upon me and abandoned me. I will never be his Queen. I will die before I am taken again, do you understand me?” Alex was perplexed when the young Methuselah actually adopted a look of deep hurt.
“How can you not be in love? He speaks of you so reverently. He said you would protect us and bring all Methuselah out from under the Terrans’ hold.”
“What he did to me was far from reverent. He lies for his own gain. Now, tell me what he sent you here for.” The young Methuselah would no longer speak, his expression sagging in defeat. She turned to the older Methuselah.
“Don’t you get it already? He wants to see his family.” The older Methuselah grinned at her and Alex’s heart began to thunder in panic.
“He has no family!” Alex’s eyes blazed and her fangs elongated of their own will. Her captive smiled up at her.
“Deny whatever you want, My Queen. He has every right to see his child.”
“Silence!” Alex bellowed into his face as she pulled the sai from his gut, removing his head in one clean movement. Alex lifted the younger Methuselah, letting her sais fall to the floor, all but forgotten. The shots and screams of the RCO casualties rang in the background, but her attention was solely focused on the trembling body in her hands. He looked up at her, unwilling or unable, to ask for mercy.
“Forgive me and forgive the sins that have been set upon you.”
“I was glad to serve Contra Mundi. Are you not glad for anything he gave you, Mistress?” Alex considered him quietly, brushing his hair aside as she drank from him. His arms came up around her in a weak embrace as she drained the life from him. She attempted to pry into his mind, but found he knew very little other than the fact that a huge plan was underway within Cain’s coven. She caught flashes of him in all his grandeur, and Isaak, ever present at his side. As she set the lifeless body beside his brethren, she turned to face the group, retrieving her weapons. There were bodies scattered everywhere and most everyone except Integra was covered in some blood and gore. Alex’s hair had come loose from its bun and was swirling around her anxiously, her eyes blazing blue in the dark. She had not realized that her Crusnik form had been released until she spoke next.
“He is after the children.” The gravelly tone in her voice made her start, but the look on the Hellsing members’ faces made her gut roll over.
“Alex... What happened to you?” Seras looked worried and horrified at the same time. Integra and Alucard seemed to watch her with the same calculating gaze and Walter merely stared in wonderment.
“My word...” It was a wonder Walter’s monocle didn’t fall.
“You asked what I am. Abel has told you about the Crusniks, I take it?” Seras was the only to reply, nodding numbly. “I am... a Crusnik, more or less. I am not one of the originals. I am not Methuselah or Nosferatu, I am an... other.” Seras’s eyes grew incredibly round and Walter let out a breath he hadn’t known he’d been holding.
“How do you know he is after the children?” Abel holstered his gun and pushed his glasses up his nose, casting her a concerned glance.
“This was his crew of messengers.” Alex looked at the group wearily, Tres in particular. “Have you heard word from Kate?”
“Nothing yet, My Lady.”
“I must get to them. I have to protect them.” Alex’s blue wings unfurled as she spoke, her eyes straying to the broken windows.
“Alex, wait, please--”
Abel’s pleas were cut short as Alex took flight with a great flap of her wings. She tucked them in close as she passed through the massive windows, but still managed to catch herself on a large shard. The others stared at the window, listening until the soft whooshing of her wings gave way to silence.
“I suppose we should call in the clean-up crew. Tres, notify Kate. Alexandra and the children will need to be on round-the-clock watch. She will be too busy protecting the children to protect herself and he will not take her from me again.”
