WTF?

Sorry this is so short, gang. My brain is stuck in Nano at the moment and my body is going "sleep dammit!"

*******

Abel barely picked at his breakfast in the great hall. He really didn’t feel like he could hold anything down due to the massive case of nerves he was suffering from. Gun squeezed his shoulder but didn’t bother to say anything because it wouldn’t have done any good. Everyone seemed more tense than was warranted for a simple adoption proceeding and Gun didn’t like it one little bit. If he could hear the whispers of “challenge” he knew Abel could too. This did not bode well for the rest of the day.

“Bradley!”

Oracle turned toward the sound of his name being called in time to see Skye come sprinting down the hallway toward him. Skye running immediately sent every nerve into red alert. Skye did not run, did not panic and was calm in just about any situation. If she was running and calling for him something was wrong.

She didn’t bother trying to tell him anything, just took his head in both hands and put her forehead against his. Relaying the problem much faster than words could have. He jerked back a little as what he saw sent his mind reeling in shock. “No. Oh, no. Hell no! She isn’t a fighter on the level that Scáthach is. Not even close. We have to stop this.”

“I don’t think we can,” Skye said, then immediately relayed the same information to Reicher, who’s WHAT?! could be heard all the way across the great hall.

“Are you out of your mind?” Takara nearly screamed.

“Challenge was issued. It has to be done,” Circe said calmly.

“Not by you. Let me do it, or Mom or one of the boys. Hell, let Abel do it himself. Goddess knows he has the power for it.”

“But not the stability at the moment. If one of you does it then everyone will say you won or lost of your own merit and abilities. Everyone here knows I can draw from others and the Council will see to it that I can only draw from his abilities. You know that as well as I do.”

“Yes. But gods, it’s Scáthach. She trained one of the greatest warriors ever. I can barely best her,” Takara said, running her hands through her hair. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she looked at Circe. “What makes you think you can pull from 02 and handle it?”

Circe resisted the urge to stick her nose in the air at the question. Takara had a valid point and if the circumstances were any different she would have been nervous about that herself. As it was, she didn’t feel there would be a problem with controlling any power she might draw from Abel’s Crusnik form.

“I’ve controlled that kind of power before,” Circe said, not meeting Takara’s eyes.

“From whom? It couldn’t have been Abel because he’s afraid of really getting hold of it. Seth and Lilith always kept their own abilities contained. So it had to have been . . .”

Circe just nodded. “Cain.”
