The next morning the Tsukino siblings slept in late. Forgoing breakfast, they got dressed and went out for lunch at a little restaurant down the street from Usagi’s apartment. They laughed, reminiscing about childhood memories and how much they used to fight. Later that afternoon when they parted company, Shingo reflected on his sister’s mental condition once more. Though she seemed to be gaining comfort and ease the more she joked and laughed, he still sensed that she was very fragile. If she couldn’t find a solution to her problem about Seiya she just might descend into that darkness that had consumed her for so long. He decided that if in a week she hadn’t told the scouts, he would. Let her be mad; if it helped her it was worth it.
Usagi was exhausted. All the emotional restoration she’d been doing, along with the previous restless night left her drained. She knew she’d been neglecting her friends, but she was just too tired to contemplate even a phone call. After she’d seen Shingo safely onto the bus that would take him home, Usagi trudged back to her apartment, put out some food for Luna and fell into bed again.
She spent Sunday rearranging the furniture in her apartment and cleaning out the refrigerator and other tasks that she never had the energy for usually. She painted her toenails and watched an old movie on TV. It felt good to be so productive. And she found another disappointment from her zombie days: how dirty she’d let her apartment get.
Returning to work the next day was sort of strange. Though Usagi had been working in the same office for over a year, it had been in a constant haze. As she walked into the building that morning, coffee in hand, she noticed several things that astonished her. She said good morning to the security guards who stared at her in amazement. She realized it was probably the first time she’d spoken to them without a prompt and also most likely the first time she’d made eye contact with the two men. She got into the elevator, noticing for the first time that there was an elevator operator in the car. How could she have missed him for over a year? She greeted him as well, and his surprise was quickly released in favor of a warm smile.
Walking into the office where she worked, Usagi viewed her co-workers with new interest. It struck her that she didn’t know more than their names. She was ashamed that she had been so absorbed in herself that she hadn’t bothered to learn anything about the people she spent most of her time with. She made a point to say hello to the receptionist, the two other assistants, and the three clerks, all of whom looked mildly shocked and a little wary at her greetings. Usagi sighed, wondering what they must think of her.
As she approached her desk outside Hasegawa-sama’s office, Usagi noticed that her boss’ door was open. That was strange. He was never at the office before she was, and he certainly never left his office door open. She debated whether or not she should go in and speak to him while she stowed her lunch in her desk and hung up her coat. She didn’t have to think long before the man in question came out himself and asked her to come inside.
“Well, Tsukino-san, welcome back. Was your vacation restful?”
“Yes sir.”
“Good.” He went on to lay out a few things that needed to be completed quickly since they had been left undone from the week before. As she was leaving his office piled with work, Usagi turned back to face her boss.
“Sir?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you.” He studied her face a moment, and then broke out into a wide smile.
“You’re welcome, Tsukino-san. Now, don’t make a habit of preying on my generosity just because I can’t afford to lose you.” She smiled. There was something else she’d missed: her boss’s subtle humor.
All that day, whenever she had to interact with one of her co-workers, or even when one of them simply passed her desk, Usagi made a point of speaking to them, or smiling, or at least nodding her head. By the end of the day, the receptionist and two of the clerks were returning her smiles and she received one curt nod from one of the other assistants.
That evening, Usagi decided to walk home from work. As she walked, she thought about how she should go about presenting herself to the scouts now that she no longer lived solely inside her own head. Individually would be ideal; it would be calmer and each scout could ask their own brand of questions. But that would take too long. The senshi gossip chain was an efficient machine. Maybe in pairs would be better. She could have lunch with Minako and Makoto and then dinner with Rei and Ami. And if she asked them not to forewarn the outer scouts, she knew they would keep her confidence. It seemed it was only among the inner scouts that secrets were impossible to keep, though the more important the secret the faster the older girls found out.
