Part 11
~2 Months, some odd ours later~
Matt yawned for what seemed like the twelfth time that minute and stretched his arms above his head. Another job down. That made four more that month, a real record for him. It also meant that it was time to move again.
Over the least three weeks he had lead a relatively normal and boring life, it passing by him in a haze of cigarette smoke and internet porn. He had already been in six separate apartments and was almost ready to skip off to the seventh, though he had already settled in comfortably to the current one.
At that moment he was enjoying the expensive mini-pod travel AC unit he'd bought. It was small enough to be placed on a desk, taking up the space a tiny lamp might, but cooling the room better than those no longer made ancient window AC units would have.
Matt didn't profess to understand them, preferring to spend his knowledge on computers and guns, but he knew they weren't all that complicated with their mini reactors or something or other they had inside powering them.
He didn't really care so long as it didn't kill him before the cigarettes did and it cooled the room like it was supposed to. They really were overpriced though; thankfully he had a lot to spend. It would definitely be coming with him when he moved. But that wasn't until morning and he wasn't packing yet.
In fact, he didn't feel like doing much of anything now that his mind wasn't engaged, at least in part, by the previous job. He had collected payment with no trouble and everything had gone smoothly. Quite boring really. He almost missed the excitement of being hunted down.
Almost.

.
Another few months had gone by, but only three new apartments; it had been slow on jobs recently and he was ready to blow that state completely.
So ready in fact that he had been cutting off any contacts he had made in the area in preparation for the departure. In the process of doing so he came across some rather disturbing news form a fellow hacker, one he had gotten out of a jam before who currently owed him a favor, one they seemed to be repaying.
Apparently not all of his long-thought-dead employer's men had been killed when the cartel had blown the place. Or he had assumed the cartel had blown the place as there had been no evidence otherwise. But in fact, according to the hacker who he hoped knew better than to fuck him over, they had gathered quite a few men and surrounded the place and began a sort of raid that more bordered on siege.
Someone had the place rigged with explosives beforehand, possibly for security, and when things had gone completely south the place had been blown, destroying everything in its path.
But apparently his previous employers had hired a hit man. And as Matt's luck had gone with them, that person hadn't been killed in the explosion and had not only been badly injured but had not gotten their pay for their time spent there all thanks to Matt. According to the hacker, that person was pissed and was on Matt's scent.
The only thing Matt hated worse than backstabbing employers were hit man. They were like rabid dogs when it came to their jobs.
Well wasn't that some good news?
Matt leaned back in the chair and blew out a trail of smoke. "I'm so fucked."
