Chapter Twelve
Josephine's Contract and an Unusual Adoption
Josephine heard a terrible noise that hurt her ears and made her jump with a start. She thought she heard someone call her name but could not tell from what direction the sound came. Water gushed into the ship and knocked her into cargo. Her unconscious form could not breathe and her body was slipping. Sebastian reached her as her soul slipped away. Oddly there were no shinigami present.
From Josephine's perspective she was moving through darkness and came to a quiet and lonely place. She was not afraid, but rather determined not to let herself remain. She called out to whoever would answer her voice. An unfamiliar voice answered her that she was dead and would so remain...Unless she cared to make a deal. Unsure of what to do Josephine trembled a little.
Sebastian looked up as he held Josephine's body and saw that another demon had come to her call.
The new demon growled at Sebastian as he held the young dripping girl. It was a female by appearance, though most demons had no set-in-stone gender unless they willed it so. In response to a cry from this girl she had naturally come wearing minimal clothing, all the best to tempt her with.
“Unhand her now! That child is mine!” Without waiting for Sebastian’s answer, as demons were generally an impatient lot, she launched an attack, showering him with razor sharp black feathers that bristled around her in a field of energy. They cut the girl's clothes to ribbons in the process, leaving her bleeding and even closer to death, the room already filling with icy water.
Sebastian threw up his own twisted and blackened wings as a shield around Josephine as his true form shone through. His eyes glowed their natural red and he smiled.
Still holding Josephine's body close Sebastian dove at the demoness and tore through a good chunk of her face with his claws. Sebastian landed gracefully on his feet and cracked his knuckles before turning to face her again. “Really now. The girl is mine. There will be many more souls for you to claim tonight. I give you my word. But this one is mine only.”
“I was the first to answer her call!” Producing a sword made of some sort of dark colored alloy she slashed wildly at his wings, scattering feathers of his and hers about ruthlessly. Her motions were quick, her speed greater than his, but her eyes burned redder, and it would seem she was impaired by her raw fury. She also appeared to be starving, in a frenzy for this soul. Yet even with this weakness, the power of her attack made Sebastian recoil, likely in hopes of protecting the girl.
“I have seen your face, and you're slow, as if your heart has been weighed down. You'd best hope it is not so heavy as I sink you to the bottom of the ocean.” With a howl of rage she stabbed his wing through, missing his neck by a mere fraction and thankfully avoiding Josephine. Yet in an effort to dodge her Sebastian had moved to the side quickly, floating cargo impeding his course, and she managed to land another blow against his crumpled wings, knocking him back into the water. “Come with me child,” she was saying to the unconscious Josephine in her mind. “I can offer you the better deal...”
Sebastian reeled as his wing was stabbed, leaking black cursed blood into the fast growing pool of water at his feet. He used the cargo boxes to spring himself back at the demoness but overshot her to the left successfully making her eyes follow in that direction. He then held Josephine in one arm and landed an elbow in the demoness' spine on the rebound effectively making her lose her grip on the sword.
She dropped it with a curse, the sword flying off into the darkness, submerging itself never to be found in time. Instead turning to her pointed claws she slashed out at Sebastian, but his blow had also damaged her spine, and her movements were pained. Her blow barely glanced the demon's shoulder, only a small trickle of blood showing for her efforts.
Sebastian caught her oncoming arm with one hand and tore it from her body effortlessly. He cast it aside and kicked her hard in the stomach, his spiked metal heel slicing her open painfully. “As I said before. This one is mine.”
She spat blood in his face. In her state it would take ages to heal unless she got a soul. “You bastard...Destroying your own kind? You stink of human. Have you fucked one?” As a last resort the claws of her glove detached, going straight through Sebastian's body but unfortunately missing his heart or brain. She refocused on reaching out to Josephine, appearing in the girl's mind as a sensual goddess. “For the price of your soul I can extend your life…I can kill those you despise, I can make your every living desire a reality...”
Josephine stirred slightly and saw the demoness as Sebastian saw her, filthy and wretched. She felt a protective arm around her and knew the one holding her was looking out for her own good. She looked at the demoness and managed to utter two words. “Not interested.”
The girl was no longer interested in her presence? The demoness screamed in rage, allowing her true form to show again as she disappeared into the blackness of Josephine's mind, and left the real world as well, presumably to lick her wounds. Regardless of their power, a demon could not remain in this world very long without a human to accompany...Yet the look of fury in her eyes told Sebastian their feud was not yet over.
“Thank you.” Josephine's eyes could not focus on what she was seeing. Her life was fading from her quickly.
“Josephine, bo-chan will be greatly saddened if you die here. I think that we should make a deal. Normally I would one day consume your soul in exchange for whatever you desire. However, given the circumstances I think I can accept another form of payment if you would hear me out.”
Josephine's eyes fluttered open and she gazed at Sebastian disbelieving. His true form was beautiful to her despite everything she had been taught as a child. “Sebastian, is that you?”

Einin was scared and crying. She had dropped her doll and could not find her mother and father. She saw the funny tall man in the hat. He looked busy and focused, but she knew he would be nice to her. Mommy had said the nice people would let them on the life boats, so she ran to the one person she knew she could trust from the bottom of her heart.
Undertaker had gotten the call from Will and immediately severed the souls of his bunk mates, a bit premature, but the water was already rising, up to his ankles and seeping into his old worn boots. He would put those on the list of work-related expenses for sure. As he wandered the halls in the direction of the most flow, he severed a few souls here and there, encountering a few other shinigami headed in the direction the water was coming from as the crowd moved in the opposite direction. Then out of nowhere he spotted little Einin shuddering from her cold feet and without her doll for the first time he'd ever seen her. With a sad sigh he walked over to her, holding up his loose robes to keep them from getting soaked yet. “Well heloOoOoOo there little girl...” Undertaker smiled as she recognized him, but in her state she seemed frightened of his black robes and scythe. He held it behind his back and adopted a silly grin instead. “Don't cry my dear, it's a pool party, everyone is diving in.”
Einin hugged Untertaker's legs tight as she cried. “I can't find mommy and she said the nice people would let us in the boats. Can you help me find mommy so we can get in a boat together. I want you to come too. The water's cold and I'm all alone. Can I stay with you?”
“Hm...I wasn't told anything about boats. But if we go we'll miss the party.” Undertaker looked around, he didn't want to leave her alone, but there was no way to relocate her to higher deck as by now the gates would be closed. He would have to take her with until he could calm her. He wanted her passing to be as peaceful as possible and so she would need to feel safe. “But you know...This is a surprise party. Your mommy is probably on the side that will be surprising us.” Undertaker petted her head and removed a strip of leather from his pocket, tying back his hair with it before picking her up and lifting Einin onto his shoulders. It would be a bit of a burden, but he really did like the girl. “Come, we'll look for her, but keep your eyes closed until I say, alright?”
“Ok.” Einin did as promised and closed her eyes. She heard noises that sounded scary and would hug Undertaker tighter when a scream or cry sounded, but never broke her promise. Her little eyes remained shut.
The ship would soon be going under and Undertaker had to get to the designated regrouping spot. He was not on the after collection team.
Undertaker led his own team through the worse affected parts, allowing Einin to hide under his long hat when it got too cold. He was taking souls left and right, often hitting more than one with one swipe of his legendary blade. His new associates were only too glad to serve under him, and it seemed their hands were just as full. But this was what Undertaker lived his unlife for, the sounds of the dying, collecting weary souls and protecting them from demons or angels who meant them harm. It was a gruesome business, screams, cries, children and elderly. There were no favorites to death.
As they slowly finished off the passengers who were doomed not to cross the gates, a group nearby broke through one barrier right on schedule, moving on to the second class decks. With the water here nearly up to his neck he left a few of his team behind to collect anyone who managed to swim through, but any lingering souls that went under with the ship were a different department’s job.
Following onto the second class decks, he gave Einin a reassuring pat. He had seen her mother, but she had been dying already, someone having locked her into a room for whatever reason. Likely she had become hysterical when her daughter went missing in the commotion. He wanted to keep that fact from the girl as long as he could.
Will spotted him and waved him over as he collected yet another soul. It was indeed a busy night.
He caught sight of Will on and waved, noting the boss's strange expression when faced with a human child. “Well hello, Will...Having a ball? Hee-hee-hee...I had thought you would stay in first class with your privileged people.”
“Our teams were scheduled to meet if you remember the briefing. What on Earth are you doing, Undertaker? She is on the list.” Will pointed to Einin who still had her eyes shut as she clung to Undertaker as though he were her savior.
Undertaker looked up as if he'd just seen the girl and shrugged with a sheepish laugh. “She grew on me...Everything is still going as planned, don't worry.” Waving Will off, technically he was no longer his boss after all, Undertaker made to continue in the opposite direction just as Grell appeared, taking Will's hand and spinning like a ballerina in joy.
His chainsaw revved, spattering blood all across the walls, and soul remnants, and a few damaged bits of record. Grell was not the most careful. “Oh Will this is so thrilling! I haven't gotten such a rush since our first time! Every one of them is like a pristine canvas to be painted red with passion!”
Undertaker was quite glad for Grell's strange obsessions, they had sufficiently distracted Will for now.
As he began to walk away Einin spoke in a fearful, yet oddly cheery voice. “Have you found mommy yet? What about the boats?” Einin tugged at Undertaker's hair and William looked away from his lover at the child. If Undertaker had allowed this child to worm her way into his heart then she was loved by death and could not die easily. This was troublesome as she was on the doomed to die list.
Grell continued to pester Will for his attention, trying to show off in his bloodstained red coat and slacks. He glowered over at whatever was distracting his lover from himself, only to see the most adorable child upon his old fling's shoulders. That was a sight to see, as much as Undertaker enjoyed watching children he had often discussed with Grell the fact he didn't want any. But surely she wasn't his child...She had the beautiful Irish red hair he so often admired in women...And the face of a dirty porcelain doll.
Undertaker meanwhile reassured her. “We haven't found her yet...But I'm sure we will soon...I've been searching every room and everyone knows adults aren't so good at hide-and-seek.”
“Ok, but you will find her, right? I miss mommy and don't think she'd like the water. It’s too cold.”
William turned to Grell. “That little one's on the list and he's playing house with her. Her mother is already claimed and who knows if he intends to do his job or not now?”
“Hmph...That's what you get for trusting an old man like that. He's had plenty of time to go senile” Grell crossed his arms, pouting for a moment, but then he got an idea. He met Will's eyes and looked over at the girl. “If he doesn't kill her...You know I've always wanted to be a mother Wiiill~”
“Do you really think she would be good for you? I...” Will looked into Grell's eyes and saw there would be no stopping the redhead from getting his way. “Do what you will. I can't deny you something you want so much. But I know nothing about raising children so this will be your responsibility. We can train her and raise her as one of us. She'll start the junior academy.”
Einin clung tight to Undertaker who realized he had collected everyone on his list, except one soul. “Have you found my mommy yet?”
With a grimace that for once in a very long time was filled with actual sadness, Undertaker lifted her off his shoulders and set her down, kneeling to one knee before her on the outer second class deck. It was quiet here, as most of the passengers to go had gotten on their boats already, the ship already listing heavily to one side. “I'm afraid not,” he said as he took his hat from her and instead rummaged in his coat for something. “You can open your eyes, Einin. Give us a smile? That's it.”
He looked at her seriously as if telling her an important secret. “I think we missed the party...But you don't have to worry, I spoke to someone who said your mommy and the other guests were warm in their coats...See they're out there on the little boats, all warm.” Undertaker ruffled her hair a bit and smiled as if this weren't going to be his hardest kill yet. “I got you something to make up for being so slow and missing them, so you'll be the belle of the ball when they come back...” He produced from deep within his coat a pair of stunning glass slippers, just her size. “See? You wanted to be a princess right?”
Einin smiled and threw her tattered leather shoes aside in favor of her very own princess glass slippers. They fit her little feet perfectly. She twirled around in them three times and stopped to hug Undertaker tightly. “If we can't find mommy can I stay with you? You're my very best friend. And we're getting married one day. We'll do it at one of the castles by the ocean in Ireland like we promised. And mommy and daddy will be there too. I love you!” Einin hugged Undertaker as she smiled brightly.
Undertaker laughed his strange slow laugh, but there was no more time. He could sense the other shinigami already evacuating through the portal, the ship would be under shortly. He had to say goodbye somehow. “Yes, yes...We'll do all of that...Marriage and all the rest my love...But everyone else has already gone. Now it's time for you to go, Einin.” Undertaker hugged her tightly, kissing her cheek before getting up and picking up his scythe.
“Where are we going?” Einin gazed at Undertaker completely trusting that he would help her and protect her. She did not pay attention to his scythe, only stared innocently into his eyes buried under his messy bangs.
“She's going with me.” Grell answered, chainsaw over his shoulder, fangs out and all. Yet he smiled lovingly at the girl, and she seemed to take to him when Undertaker nodded graciously. Grell was deranged, but with Will on his side he was sure Einin would be squared away well.
“Undertaker, see to your crew below decks, get all your people to the portal. I'll take care of her~” Grell was already taking a happy Einin by the hand, leading her back to the portal, happily chattering about dolls and dresses and tea parties they would have as Undertaker returned to his work.
Einin thought her "fiancé's" friend was pretty, but she could not tell if the pretty friend was a boy or a girl. It didn't really matter though. If Mr. Cliff said it was a friend then it was a friend and that was that. Happily she followed the red person and accepted the outstretched hand. They would all play together and it would be nice.

Through the shinigami portal Sebastian looked to Ciel and then to Arthur. It was time and they all knew it. Josephine had no clue who the blonde boy was but he seemed very scared of Sebastian all of a sudden. He looked around but realized there was no place for him to go. “Arthur, it is time. I shall deliver death to you. I cannot promise it will be painless, but I will be as gentle as I can, if you hold still.”
Arthur stilled with fear and screamed as Sebastian closed in with a kiss that made his body convulse in pain until finally there was no life left in him. Sebastian allowed the body to fall to the ground below and lifted it to cast it back on the ship beyond the portal. Sebastian looked satisfied, as though he had stuffed himself on a Christmas feast and would soon sleep from being full.
Josephine looked away but did not seem afraid so much as respectful of the intimate nature of the final act of Sebastian and Arthur's contract. She was thankful as well that she would never have to suffer such a fate.
Ciel on the other hand was terrified by the act. Sebastian had been so much...Kinder with him. At the very least he could have warned him before the last second. Watching his body thrown away so carelessly, Ciel was overwhelmed by a sense of disgust. This must be part of his new conscience for he'd never been so nauseated by Sebastian in his life or undeath. The boy had been all manner of despicable, but only minutes ago he'd been alive, and now he was nothing, truly nothing.
Ciel didn't want to look at Sebastian for now. “Sebastian, see about getting a proper dress for Josephine, she's a mess. Arrange for some medical spray as well.” He didn't question anymore why he knew of the special potion they had which would heal all wounds at a rather steep price. One more week and this nightmare would be over. Currently he was removing his own jacket and shirt to give to Josephine, who was still soaked and looked cold even with Sebastian's coat wrapped around her. They were in some businesslike sector of the shinigami library by the looks of it. Around them shinigami were busy attending to recently acquired records.
Sebastian's face took on an odd smile. He was satiated by his meal but looking at Josephine with hungry eyes. She would have been tasty but he couldn't do that to his lover and so had made other arrangements. Ciel was unnerved by the kiss no doubt, but he would come around. Inevitably he would ask why Josephine was with them and not her family. That was the moment Sebastian was truly dreading.
Yuki, who was now back on business as well, was milling around a book cart stacked with a few red-glowing tomes. “Remember, put those who can be reincarnated onto this pile, we have to have them sorted by morning.”
Josephine's face lit up in an odd way. As cold as she was she ran to the familiar voice smiling. She looked positively tiny in Sebastian's coat but hoped she would be recognized. “Yuki, I...I thought you might have died on the ship too. I'm glad you didn't. I didn't think I'd see you again.”
Yuki laughed cheerily, her bloodstained white gown having been replaced by a men's suit as well pressed as Will's, yet tailored to fit her curves in an extremely scandalous way considering their time period. No other female shinigami were dressed this way, but the suit represented power, as she was in charge of her department after all.
“Oh lovely, love! I had thought you were dead for sure! I saw your name on the list...I told you I couldn't die darling, did you have no faith in me...Oh! But you no longer need faith do you?” Automatically she reached for Jo's hair and revealed the mark Sebastian had left there. “I'm the closest to an angel you will ever see now, sweetling.”
Ciel, his chest now bare, revealing many remaining marks of his and Sebastian's lovemaking walked over to her then, eying Yuki suspiciously and handing Jo his clothes. “Angels...Why would any one want to meet them? Here Jo, you'll catch a chill.”
“Thank you Lou...Ciel. I don't know where I can change though. Is there a place I could go, Yuki?”
The portal flashed and Will and the first wave teams were assembled with Einin tugging at Grell's hands twirling about in her glass slippers. “We will arrange for you to go to New York for the week as promised Sebastian. Your new contract can stay or return to the mansion as you please. I assume you wish to have a vacation with your lover before we begin the examinations and file the new paperwork.”
Grell paused in his play with Einin to look over the bare-chested boy. “Oh, Phantomhive...A-are those kiss marks?” Grell snapped his teeth, then remembered Will and his new daughter were in the room and calmed himself as much as possible.
Ciel blushed, crossing his arms in an attempt to at least hide those around his nipples. He looked to Sebastian, suddenly extremely confused. Perhaps the shinigami only thought that Josephine was a contract, as she had come with them. Then again, why hadn't she been placed on a boat with her family? “That is for Sebastian to decide, but I would prefer to get the change over with as soon as possible. And we must return Josephine to her family.”
“I'm not going back, Ciel. As far as they know I didn't make it. I don't know how to change that unless I wind up on the rescue ships when they arrive. Even then it is probably too late for me. Can you do that, Sebastian? Can you make it appear as though I am alive by normal circumstances?”
Sebastian brought his hand to his chin and pondered only a moment. “Given the right circumstances I don't see why I couldn't do so simple a thing. I was planning something similar for bo-chan and I. That way your mother would not be grieving. You shall be counted among the survivors. We should hurry though. Your mother will be sad thinking you have died. We should dress you appropriately if at all possible.”
“She is a scrawny little thing. But I must have something that will do if you'll allow me to take her to my rooms.” Yuki flashed a brilliant smile Sebastian's way, leaving her cart of books momentarily to put her arm around the girl.
Ciel flinched away from her, closer to Sebastian as if she were the catalyst that would set his mind off to insanity again. “She is a free person.”
Yuki let out a muffled giggle. “Not quite...”
Ciel ignored her. “If she chose to go with you however she would have to return in a timely manner. Time passes differently here, and I refuse to have Lizzie mourn for us again.”
“I'll be fine, Ciel. I know Yuki won't hurt me. She had her chance and didn't. I'll be back soon. We still need to discuss how we will handle father and under what terms the negotiations will publicly begin if at all.” Josephine leaned into Yuki and followed her leaving the others behind.
Sebastian picked up the discarded shirt and jacket Ciel had handed the young girl and returned to Ciel dressing him as he knelt before his lover.
“Mommy Grell, where are we?” Einin had ignored most of what had transpired and was looking over the vast library in awe.
'Mommy?' Sebastian cocked his head to the side and rolled his eyes a moment. Grell had finally snapped and lost whatever sanity he had left. No matter. Soon they would be away and it would be just Ciel and he for a whole week before they had to settle into the tests and questioning of the shinigami who would be helping them fix him.
“This is your new home!” Grell perked up, knowing Sebastian was watching and admiring him, of course. “You're going to live in this world with me and your new daddy Will too. You'll love it here, we're like your fairy godparents...We'll give you anything you want!” Grell looked over to Will, but he was still busy sorting books into piles, regrouping round two, checking on schedules. He sighed. “You'll meet daddy William later, he's very busy now.”
Ciel smirked, trying to muffle a laugh at the shinigami referring to himself as a fairy godparent. He was certainly some kind of fairy.

Yuki took Josephine down a hallway and to a sort of elevator which she opened with a special key. It took them somewhere above the library, but clearly in another dimension considering there was nothing above the library in this one. They stepped out into another paradox, what felt like the basement of a lavish home decorated in Yuki's typical elegant white and gold style. Without wasting any time Yuki led Jo to a wardrobe which she opened fully for the girl to inspect. “Hurry and choose something, Sweetling, we haven't much time, hours will have already passed in your world...”
“They're all so lovely. Would this one be alright?” Josephine held out a blue and white dress that could have been from her own closet easily. It was beautiful and her parents would not think anything amiss seeing her in something like it. “I don't have a corset or pantalettes though. I would see that you got them back along with the dress, Yuki. Could I please borrow some underthings?”
Yuki smiled, but shook her head. “No, but only because I don't have such things...They are at the bottom of the ocean. These are merely dresses that I ordered for the trip and could not pack. You see what I am wearing now, this is my usual wardrobe.” Yuki shrugged, but began digging through some drawers for underthings she might have missed.
“I suppose I could always say I removed them for warmth when they became wet. Mother fears us catching a fever so it would make sense.” Josephine slipped Sebastian's coat off her slender shoulders revealing the torn rags that had once been Ciel's clothes. Her bared skin was exposed and the chill in the room made her shiver as moist skin met with it. Her nipples grew hard instantly and she struggled to remove the tattered cloth.
Yuki had to turn away, displeased she couldn't play with those pert red buds before leaving, but there really wasn't time. One of these days they would come together again, but it couldn't be tonight. Once the girl had undressed Yuki made quick work of buttoning her into the new clothing. “I'm sorry dear, I would love to please you again all night...But we are so busy and your demon is impatient...”
“My, oh. Right. Actually I am his in a way. You mean you would see me again?” Josephine smiled excited at the unexpected prospect of Yuki's hands and mouth along her body again. She hadn't thought it would happen and yet here was Yuki asking for just that. It made a girlish blush rise to her cheeks. She liked the idea of enjoying time with Yuki again. “I would like that very much.”
