CHAPTER 12
Kawamura Takashi lifted his head from where he was wiping off tables, there was a knock at the front window. They were still closed; lunch didn’t start for a few hours so it was strange that someone would be there so early. His father yelled “we’re closed!” just a Kawamura realized who was knocking. He shushed him and jogged to the door.
Kirihara smiled awkwardly, “yo.”
“Kirihara-kun! What brings you here so early?”
“I was hoping we could talk in private for a minute.”
Kawamura frowned, “sure …come in.” He led him to a table in the far back.
“I’m sorry to bug you when you’re trying to open,” he noticed Kawamura’s pale complexion, “full moon soon, huh?”
The Werewolf smiled sadly and nodded, “yeah.”
“That’s kind of what I came here to ask you. I heard something recently about a new Werewolf taking over the local pack …”
Kirihara didn’t realize it was possible but Kawamura actually got paler. His pupils dilated in shock. “Where did you hear about that?”
“From Atobe …the new leader was seen with some Vampires, so I need to know what’s going on before I take this to Tezuka. They’re worried something bad will happen since he was seen with Kite. Atobe thinks he was the one who attacked his old club a while ago.”
Kawamura wrung his hands nervously, “as far as I know he was. The guy you’re thinking of is Tanishi Kei. He’s a mean one, he was turned a long, long time ago and this is the first time he has ever belonged to a pack. He was originally one of those lone wolf types, no pun intended, but after his attack on Atobe he tried to join our pack. The original leader still has respect for Humans, that’s why he has all of us who are still kind of new to our transformation stay the night with Tezuka. He wouldn’t let Tanishi join because he has no respect for anything. Tanishi killed him in a fair battle and took over the pack. He has an inner circle that he’s brought in from his home town, and none of them have any respect for anything but themselves.”
Kirihara slammed his hands on the table, “why didn’t you tell anyone this before?”
“I couldn’t …you don’t understand Kirihara-kun.” Kawamura shook his head, “you don’t understand what it’s been like for me, since they know I used to be a Hunter. The old leader didn’t care what I did before; he knew I just did it to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves. Tanishi sees me as the enemy and he threatened my father and my mother and little sister.”
“Mother and little sister?”
“My parents divorced a long time ago, but her and my sister still live in the city. Tanishi found out about them and he’s holding them over me to keep me silent. Tezuka knows this; it’s why he hasn’t asked me to do anything for him.”
“I’m sorry,” what else could he say?
Kawamura shook his head, “don’t be, you didn’t know. But since you heard it from Atobe first, you can’t prove it came from me. Please tell Tezuka. I don’t know what he’s up to, only his inner circle knows what he’s doing.”
“At least we have a direction. Atobe and Sanada are afraid they’re planning an attack, but no one really knows anything.”
Kawamura rubbed the back of his neck nervously, the scars standing out against his pale skin, “I really don’t know what to say, I don’t know much more either. I’d say prepare for the worst. Tanishi is a loose cannon, it’s impossible to tell what he’s thinking at any given time.”
Kirihara stood from the table, in an awkwardly kind gesture he placed his hand over Kawamura’s, “thanks, I mean it. I’ll make sure Tezuka finds out.”
Kawamura smiled and nodded.
So, his awkward comforting worked.
After saying good bye to Kawamura’s father he headed back to the Organization. He had to tell Tezuka eventually and he couldn’t beat around the bush too much more.
Tezuka let him into the office before he even had to knock.
“What brings you here?” Tezuka’s brows were pinched with worry.
Kirihara told Tezuka everything Atobe and Kawamura had told him. Tezuka blinked slowly as he digested all the information.
“When did Atobe tell you?”
A-ha, a hole in his plan. He was always good at coming up with the start of a plan, he just sucked at the follow through. “Uhh …in my dreams …”
Instead of scoffing and blowing off everything Kirihara had told him, Tezuka frowned, “Hematite.”
“Excuse me?”
“Hematite will help you keep him out of your head, and I do believe there is an Incubus banishing spell, but I’d have to look it up.”
Kirihara blinked, “oh …thanks.”
“I know Atobe’s quirks; he’s tried to get into my head on several occasions. Now, that is everything you know?”
“Yes.”
“All right. Tomorrow night is the full moon; we’ll have to make preparations. I have to talk to the Elites but once I get that cleared up everyone will know more. I suggest you get your weapons ready. We don’t know what’s coming, but if history is to be repeated it won’t be good.”
After Kirihara left the first thing Tezuka did was call Sanada’s personal line. Of course, the Master would be sleeping but he should be able to contact his Voice. A male picked up after three rings, “Sanada Genichirou is unavailable at the moment, but I will be more than happy to take a message …”
“This is Tezuka.”
The Voice chuckled, “Ah, my apologies Tezuka-san, I didn’t recognize your voice! It must be important if you are calling now.” His voice was smooth with the slightest hint is a speech impediment, kind of like what one would expect a snake to sound like.
“Quite, please tell your Master to phone me the moment he awakens …Kirihara filled me in.”
“Of course.” After formalities they hung up.
One thing off his list. Next was a little favor he had been meaning to clear up. Leaving his office he went first to the Hunters floor. Poking his head into the room he didn’t notice whom he was looking for.
“Looking for someone?”
“Mizuki.”
“Cafeteria.”
He turned on his heel to the elevator, taking it up the few floors. He found the little Hunter sitting across a table from Yuuta.
“Mizuki, may I speak to you for a moment?”
“Of course?”
The Hunter followed him to a quiet corner of the room. “I have a favor to ask.”
“Anything.”
“The police believe an officer by the name Arai had something to do with our files being leaked, but they have lost him. He hasn’t showed up for work and they can’t locate him using their methods …so …”
Mizuki let out a soft chuckle, “so you want me to sneak in the back door?”
“Preferably.”
“That’s a lot of data to go through Tezuka-san …it’ll take me a few days.”
“Then please spend those few days concentrating on this task alone. It is important.”
Mizuki nodded, a slight dip of his head, “of course, I will do my best.” He hooked his hands behind his back and sauntered back over to Yuuta who looked up at him curiously.
There wasn’t much more he could do until Mizuki had a lead. He could have the Elite’s keep an eye open but at this point in time he couldn’t spare the man-power, at least not until the threat was over.
Kirihara toed open his apartment door, careful to keep a foot out to block small escapee’s. Marui scooped up the kitten and helped Kirihara take the groceries into the kitchen. With neither male being around an awful lot, the apartment still contained mostly boxes. Marui unpacked as he needed and Kirihara just pushed boxes around to make it look like he helped.
“You’re stressed?”
Kirihara looked up from where he was bent over in the fridge, “what makes you say that?”
“You’re paler than usual and you get that pinch between your eyes when you’re thinking too hard.”
“Listen Bunta-san …tomorrow night, is there somewhere else you can go? Maybe get Yagyuu to stay with you?”
Marui paled, “Akaya, what’s going on?”
He wasn’t sure he wanted to tell the truth, but he knew Marui wouldn’t agree otherwise. “It’s a full moon tomorrow …”
“Yeah? And?”
“We think there might be an attack, we don’t know where, but Sanada-san and Atobe-san think we’re in danger.”
“What kind of attack?” Marui’s voice rose in panic.
“Werewolves, we think.”
Marui slumped against the counter, eyes showing too much white. “You’re serious …doesn’t the lore say that if you get bit or scratched by one you-“
“You turn into one …yeah, it’s not a myth.”
“And they’re planning an attack?”
“We think so …”
“What are you guys gonna do?” The colour started to come back to Marui’s face; hope that the Hunters had a great plan to keep themselves protected.
“Guard where we think they’re gonna attack …hope we don’t get bit.” Kirihara shrugged.
“Hope? There’s nothing else you can do? Like, wear armor or something?”
“Too hard to fight in armor, they’re fast, so we need our complete wits and talents. Armor just slows us down.”
“...I’ll call Yagyuu and see if he’ll stay here with me tomorrow night.”
“Thank you.”
The Hunters were split into three groups, and given the amount of survivors, that was three very small groups. One was sent to Atobe to coordinate with his Vampires and Hunters. The other was sent to Sanada to coordinate with his Vampires. The remaining group scattered around the Organization.
Extra weapons had been gathered from stashes at homes and storage units, better to border on the side of over-kill then under.
The Hunters at the Organization stood at the large windows, watching the dark clouds roll over the setting sun.
“Looks like rain.”
Pale and haggard men and women were slipping into the Organization through back doors and underground passages. Heavy iron doors, plated with steel, were closed and locked behind them. The heavy thunk of computerized locks echoed through the hallway.
Inui-sensei inspected every werewolf that came in, noted vitals and history.
He made a special note that there seemed to be higher volumes than usual. Instead of half a dozen cells remaining open every one was locked tight.
After one quick run through, he headed back up the locked elevator, returning to the ground floor.
People ran to an fro trying to get away from the heavy rains; rains so thick one couldn’t see the buildings on the other side of the street. A lone figure with a black umbrella stood among the running crowds, seemingly unbothered by the rain splashing around his legs. The skies darkened and the full face of the moon peeked between gaps in the clouds. A light breeze ruffled the long jacket around his thin legs.
The figure gazed up at the dark face of the Organization. "What a lovely night," he hummed quietly. He lifted his hand, as if to test if it was still raining and clenched his fist.
Inside the building several dozen locks clanked.
Kawamura rose with a start as his door swung open. He could feel the change starting so why was his door opening?!
With a dark chuckle, lost in the sound of running feet and heavy rain, the man brushed his hand like knocking away stray dirt and all the doors in the basement swung open.
Two dozen large angry wolves slunk out of their cages, the largest letting out a deep chuckle. Dark jowls curled back to reveal large white teeth. He snorted, the sound rumbling like a human laugh.
Kawamura edged to the door, the change making it hard for him to move, but he knew inside the part of his mind that was still human that something was wrong. A large black wolf suddenly blocked his path. Before he could react a paw was raked across his face, forcing him back and his door was slammed shut, the lock re-engaging.
He howled and lunged at the door, dark eyes laughing at him through the small window.
Kirihara leaned against the window watching the rain, shot-gun resting on his hip. Ann paced up and down the hallway, checking her watch every few seconds.
“relax, we’ll see them coming.” Ishida tried to sound convincing, if not slightly flippant. The quiver in his voice betraying just how nervous he really was.
Ann snorted, unholstering her gun and giving it a quick check.
It started as a rattle, metal on metal. All the Hunters froze, trying to locate the sound.
“That’s not a normal ‘building’ sound is it?” Kamio stood from his perch on the end of a desk, fingers reaching for the butt of his gun.
The rattling became louder and they all realized it was coming from the elevator.
“What in the blue fu-“
The doors shattered open and fully formed Werewolves lunged from the demolished cart onto the floor.
Panicked screams and gunshots filled the hallway as Tezuka burst out of his office, gun in hand before his brain caught up to what was happening. A yell was ripped from his throat when a Werewolf came skidding up the hall towards him.
Ann screamed as a Werewolf barreled down on her, her gun clicked empty and she had nowhere to go. The Were had managed to block her, putting her back to a wall. Wide open jaws were about to close in on her when she was hit from the side, knocked into and over the desk she was wedged against.
They fell in a heap, Ann pinned underneath a much heavier body. Kirihara groaned and tried to push himself up, the desk having winded him. His eyes refocused and he realized he was staring down at the curve of Ann’s collar. Their tumble had put him between her thighs, her strong limbs clinging to his hips. It had been far too long since he had been with a woman, he forgot for a moment where he was. Which, given the situation, wasn't the brightest thing he had ever done.
“Kirihara …”
His brain snapped back to where he was and he scrambled back. Ann’s knee quickly relocated to his crotch, winding him more than the desk could have ever imagined.
“What was that for?”
“I could ask you the same thing!” He wheezed.
“You saved me.”
Kirihara rolled onto his side, “yeah?” He propped up on an elbow to watch the Were dart the other way, finding the unprotected back of another Hunter.
“I thought you hated me?”
“I don’t like you, but I never said I hated you. We’re family, right? One big fucking dysfunctional family.” He managed to re-seat himself.
Ann scrambled up with a blush and helped him to his feet. They both reloaded their weapons and ducked out from behind their hiding spot, back into the carnage. Blood splattered the walls of the hallway, both human and werewolf. Bodies piled up in the hall, Hunters had to jump over bodies of the fallen to protect others.
Kirihara turned when he heard a scream, Ishida was slumped against the wall, a Werewolf muzzle-deep in his chest. Kirihara opened his mouth to shout but the wind was knocked out of him as he was rode to the ground. Teeth tore into his shoulder and realization hit him like a ton of bricks. He was bit!
The Werewolf jumped off of his back and used his shoulder to toss him around, like a dog with a toy. He was out-weighed by easily double his own body weight so all he could do was hope the Werewolf didn't snap his neck and hang on for the rest of the ride.
Teeth tore threw skin and muscle and he feared his arm would be sheared off. Teeth crunched bone and suddenly he was airborne.
He hit the wall, head-first and blacked out.
Sakurai screamed as he unloaded his clip into the Werewolf shredding his partner. The wolf reared back with an animalistic scream and dove out the window, shattering glass. Rain blew in the busted window, soaking the carpet and the Hunters around. The remaining Werewolves, far fewer then when they had started, let out dark grumbles and followed their comrade out the windows. Bloody paw prints marked the carpets and walls where they had all fought.
Their laboured breathing and the rain pelting the building wasn't enough to muffle the terror-filled screams flowing up from the streets.
