Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Twelve
Age 16
Even without multiple layers on you were rather warm. That was rather unusual at this time of year. Though your unnatural warmth was easily explained as there was a Flareon laying on your lap. Methodically your hands kept pace, brushing up and down the length of his vermilion colored torso. You hummed an old song, probably long out of style with most people your age, as you continued to brush through his fur. It was one activity that Flareon really seemed to love. In fact, you would have to say that it was his favorite thing to do even if you were the one doing all the work. Though you didn't mind it very much all things considering. At least he wasn't acting all snooty.
"You're still sad."
You looked down to Flareon as he stretched and yawned on your lap. This definitely wasn't the first time that you had heard things you were sure came from pokemon. Rorsh used to talk to you all the time. He was a psychic pokemon so that made sense. But without him you seemed to be hearing a whole lot more. Some part of you was thrilled by the idea that it might be true. Who didn't wish for secret powers? But you were old enough to realize that anything out of the ordinary wouldn't be really easy to deal with. If it was true (and not just your way to cope with losing Rorsh) then there would probably be a lot of people who would bother you - scientists, trainers, the works. You imagined that scientists would probably want to study your brain. Trainers would no doubt want you to figure out how to turn it into a way to help make their pokemon stronger. Breeders, like your own family, would want you to --
Flareon pressed his nose into your abdomen to try your attention back to what he thought was important - him. You tilted your head as you looked into his large, dark eyes.
"What?"
Said dark eyes rolled as he pressed his nose back into your thighs. You pushed the brush through his the pale lemon yellow tail. He stretched over your legs which, admittedly, were going to sleep. He might have been an inch or so smaller than average but he was right on point for the weight.
"He moved on."
Your mouth opened a little and all you could get out was a simple, "Hey!"
"You should too."
"It's not that easy," you responded quietly. "I knew him for so long he was a part of my life. Six years of my life. That's almost half."
Yeah, you realized that to most people you probably looked insane. Many people might talk to their pokemon when they did something good or bad, or when they were trying to explain an idea. But you had never seen one hold a conversation about life with a pokemon.
"You care too much."
You nudged at his nuzzle almost playfully. "You should be happy about that. Otherwise I wouldn't take as good of care of you."
"You aren't. You stopped brushing."
At this you rolled him off of your lap and stood up. Your legs felt weak and tingly underneath you but your pride wouldn't let you fall back towards the ground. Instead you waited in your place as the feeling came back to them. It hurt, of course. The tingle sensation always hurt. But at the same time there was a sense of pleasure in it as well as strange as that was. It wasn't something you really put too much thought into. You just had nothing better to do until you got all the feeling back.
As soon as you did you picked up the brush you used on Flareon and started walking back to the house. You mumbled something about fixing his dinner as you headed off, secure in the knowledge that he would probably find you when he got hungry and not a moment before. Unlike Nox, Flareon wasn't as securely attached to you as he could have been. Most days you thought he only used you to get brushed and fed.
You opened the door to your house and walked in. You left it cracked just incase Flareon decided to wander in. What you didn't expect to see was Nox resting on the couch watching television. With an inquisitive look you moved over to him and leaned against the back of the couch. He regarded you quietly before turning his attention back towards the screen. When he put his attention to something he never did it halfheartedly. He threw himself into it body and soul, which was exactly what he seemed to be doing. He didn't even stir from his spot when you rubbed between his ears.
Though you did get the distinct feeling that he was unsatisfied with your decision to move away after that. Still, he didn't get up to follow you and as far as you could tell his eyes didn't trail you either. Which was fine; if he knew you came back to cook yourself dinner he'd be between your legs sniffing about your cooking. Considering he was three feet tall that practically took you off your feet.
Before you started on your food you pulled down the two jars of predone pokemon food that you'd made up for Nox and Flareon. And you also pulled out the special dressing that you used to soak the pieces in ever so lightly before serving it to them. Of course the food was good without the dressing but it was just something extra you could do for them.
By the time that you'd finished your own meal both Nox and Flareon were waiting expectantly by the table. You placed the plate of pasta on your placemat before serving your pokemon. They waited only a moment for you to sit down before digging into their own food. Nox, once again, went at it with all he had. Compared to your gluttonous umbreon, Flareon ate like an angel. You had a feeling that it was because of the fact that he didn't want to get his fur dirty. Not that you could blame him. It must be a hassle to try and get clean without the dexterity and mobility that came with human arms and hands.
"Nox? Have you seen mom and dad?"
Nox looked up long enough, his ears finish their twitch from when you'd caught his attention, just to shake his head. He hesitated for a moment to make sure you weren't going to say anything else before going back to his food. You really didn't know what else to ask him - if he hadn't seen your parents there wasn't much else he could know.
Based on the time of year you could make a guess even if you didn't know much. They were probably just selecting pokemon for a breeding session or something. Spring would signal the time when all new trainers got their pokemon. If you remembered correctly people on this ranch were going to breed for a few Torchic. The birth of starter pokemon was always so regulated - the guidelines were way intense. So not only did they have to find compatible pokemon but they had to make sure that the compatible pokemon agreed to breed with one another. Then when that was all done they would be left alone together. Despite the fact that scientists nor breeders had seen pokemon actually breed with one another you had no doubt that one would bring back an egg sooner or later. That was, of course, assuming that's what your parents were working on.
Speaking of which…
"Are either of you interested in breeding?"
Well that made them both stop eating. Nox practically choked on his food. Meanwhile Flareon gave you such a heated look that you thought you were about to be treated to some flames. Thankfully he restrained himself from that and with a snort went right back to eating. Nox wasn't so quick to recover as he just stared at you, intense eyes searching your face. There was the sense that he was kind of looking for signs of instability.
"Oh don't look at me like that. You've been around for three years now. Plenty of pokemon breed a lot younger than you."
Though you really didn't approve of the people who made their pokemon breed too much younger than that. It kind of felt like teenage pregnancy to you. But as far as you could tell, Nox had the mentality of something like an adult. Besides you felt it was always better if you knew what he wanted before he took measures to get something himself. Despite the fact that this was a farm, any egg had to be accounted for and the parentage certain so they could calculate the chances of traits being passed on.
Though he couldn't follow your thoughts like Rorsh used to be able to, Nox picked them out well enough. He sat on his hunches and glared at you. Well now his look matched that of Flareon. Funny seeing as the two of them rarely agreed on much.
"It's only a question, Nox, calm down. You know I'm never going to force you."
"If I mate...you will be it's mother."
You looked down at him blinking. You weren't quite sure if that had been a statement or a question. It seemed safer to assume it as a statement.
"You mean that I'll raise it right?"
Cause him wanting you to biologically be it's mother was a little bit creepier to think about. Besides the whole physical deed needing to be done as far as the human system was concerned, which you were despite your quirks, there were so many other things that just felt wrong with contemplating if he'd meant something else.
Nox contemplated his answer as his expression softened. He nodded once before going back to his food. When he did so you let out a long breath and a bit of a laugh at yourself. Whatever had driven you to think of the other thing you never wanted to know. That was definitely not something you wanted to waste your mental energy trying to work out. Though the more you poked at your pasta the more thoughts slipped through your head. And each one seemed more implausible than the last. As far as you were aware, humans and pokemon were incompatible with one another. Completely different species. Though...pokemon of different species could still interbreed.
You shook your head and practically bit your tongue to force those really creepy thoughts from your mind. Suddenly you were very glad that Rorsh wasn't with you.
