Shade didn't have a chance to eplain to Gertrude. A fire ball nearly knocked her off her feet. The heat burning the tips of her hair.
She heard the distinct bark of a Growlithe in the tunnel she had just exited. What's more, she heard the officers following the animal which was far enough away for her to make a run for it.
The police pokemon was trying it's best to stay out of the water in the tunnel, the same waist deep water that had slowed her down more than she had thought.
"Sorry, boy." Shade attacked with a shadow ball then stuck her hands in the water and froze a wall of ice out of it. The view of her escape was hidden from her pursuer.
Shade headed right for the busy crowd of people. She covered herself with an oversized sweater off the rack outside of a clothing store and shed her wet pants and shoes in an alley, stuffing them in a grocery bag she had picked up blowing in the wind. A pair of flipflops sitting by the water fountain and she switched from a hurried run to a casual walk.
She powered her phone back on. Several messages from Gertrude.
She called Gertrude back. "I'm fine. Listen. Withdraw everything from my account, everything! Now! I'll meet you and Broken in the usual place. You might want to empty out your account too." Shade turned to face a store window. "Oh yes it is a lovely dress. Do you think she'll like it?" She watched the reflection of the officer behind her pass by. "Sorry about that. Look, I'll explain later, just, make sure to grab the pokeballs on my side of the bed on the endtable. Everything important, but we have to be able to carry it. See you soon."
Shade stopped long enough to lift a pair of sunglasses and that was the last stop she would make. Her face was already appearing on the television. Luckily they hadn't linked Gertrude to her yet.
Outside of the city on a lesser traveled road Shade finally met with the other two members of her team. Broken held a portable television he had bought. On screen was Shade and Gertrude.
Then they showed a clip from a security camera. It showed someone who looked like Shade and a Machoke, off screen an unseen psychic attacked the guards.
"Shade?"
"I don't know. Try to remember all of the investors that you have seen or heard named. We need to write them down. I think they're the most likely the suspects. Certainly a few knew of my run ins with the law." Shade sat on a stone. "The lab was ransacked. I saw the security monitors. Not a drawer in my desk, all my file cabinets and the safe was missing." Shade handed over a small notebook. "The investors I had remembered."
"We should take this to the police!" Broken suggested.
"The police chief is on there. A few other officers too." Gertrude knew this from meeting with them. "They wanted something made up for their pokemon to help protect them in the line of duty. I always felt there was a little more."
"What's in the backpacks?" Shade asked.
"Money, our important stuff. The duffle bag is yours." Broken answered. He handed her one of the backpacks and the duffle. "I liked baby sitting too. No more trips to the gym or cooking shows."
"I got a paycheck!" Gertrude kicked a pebble. "No more fancy dresses."
"I'll make sure you get your dresses." Shade stood up. "And as long as they don't know me or you, we can still do things we like." She pulled the hood down and located the scissors she had asked Gertrude for and some cheap dye.

Shade had recalled Broken and Gertrude. They needed a rest. The packs were heavy but she trudged on. It was late noon and she had walked all the rest of yesterday and all night after having made the get away yesterday. She had one goal. The small port town of Beach Wood. It was off the map and Mr. Right had once sent her there for a pick up. It had been the first inkling that the man was not as legal in his business s people assumed.
She knew of a captain there that would sail with anyone for enough money. She needed to get to Johto.
Nightfall. Shade managed to board a bus that had a flat. She gave word of her destination after Broken quickly helped out and they were off.
22/4/2011
Those non stop trips were something else, especially since the driver drove like a madman. On two occasions they had achieved being airborne. He knew his path well enough to even let everyone know to get to one side of the bus to avoid tipping over as he made a sharp turn.
They were now two miles from the coast and Shade was hunkering down for the night.
She got a small fire going and let Gertrude and Broken out.
"You look exhausted!" Gertrude began to fret over her.
Broken automatically went for more firewood and bedding materials.
"I got you something." Shade pulled a veiled dress from her bag. "I traded for it on the bus ride." She yawned.
"What did you trade for it?" Gertrude asked as she felt the silk between her fingers.
"Nothing important."
Back on another bus a woman with a laudable ammount of jewlry showed off the gold and opal meowth pin that she had recently aquired.
"You should be able to travel easily now." Shade gave her friend a kiss.
"Shade..." Gertrude started to warn.
"We are in the middle of nowhere. Broken likes to joke about how close we are, even calls you mom now." Shade chuckled tiredly.
They heard Broken clear his throat. "Do you two need some privacy. There's a pond and some Slowpoke I could get some tails if you'd like."
"Slowpoke tail would be nice." Gertrude licked her lips. She heard a snore and looked down to see Shade using her lap as a pillow. "Just be nice to them, okay. Catch them some fish."
Broken pulled a few beers and an old rod from his bag. Gave Gertrude a nod and headed for the pond.
Nice quiet and a gentle breeze. Stars overhead. Broken had his beers fixed to the shore with some extra line, bobbing in the gentle waves and keeping cold. His mind wandered back to the one true home he thought he had. The big bed, a television, the kitchen with the island that held everything he needed to cook a feast. He already missed the gym, the book club and the kids he baby sat. No more beer after this pack, who else would hire a Machoke to watch their kids. Miyu, she had been the driving force in getting him the baby sitting jobs ever since he had watched her boyfriend's niece.
At least he woldn't have to pine for Aura's Machoke again. Seeing her nearly every day had made it hard to get over her.
"Slow... poke..."
He watched as the amphibious psychic slowly exited the water. Then another. And another.
He explained to them, slowly, what he wanted. After a while sitting there, he had even caught some fish, they finally started to talk about his offer. By the time it came up as a yes, he had enough for his family and all five Slowpoke to have a couple fish each.
He drank his second beer on the walk back, his bounty in a net over his shoulder.
"You don't really think thay they got this far, do you?" A voice had him slow his pace.
"I once chased a member of Team Magma all the way across the forest. From one end to the other. Chased him for days and days! Transferred here afterward." A second voice answered. "This trainer and her pokemon are definetly out here. I can feel it!"
Broken ducked low and got off the path. It was around eleven by the time he had returned. He explained about the rangers in the area searching for them to Gertrude as Shade was still sleeping.
They woke her, only for her to shrug it off. They retreated deeper into the abandoned den and blocked off the entrance with dirt, sticks and grass once dinner was finished.

Evidence of two individuals searching the campsite was obvious. They even looked into the hole they had slept in.
"The barricade was a good idea." Broken admitted.
"When it is late, people tend to get lazy." Shade yawned.
They decided to eat some of the smoked fish while walking. To make up for lost time and to get ahead of the rangers from last night. They decided to go East instead of West then head for the coast.
A few encounters with wild pokemon caused them to use up their stock of potions. Luckily, there were plenty of berries for various status conditions.
"I hate how the games make it seem like you just get two or three berries from a plant." Shade slipped down the trunk of a tree. "Found some fruit too."
"It is posionous." Gertrude told her before Shade could take a bite. "Only bug types have ever eaten it that I have seen."

"Shhh!" Shade hissed. The rangers on their tails had doubled back and gained ground when they had found the new path the team had taken.
"Over here!" They currently stood in the middle of a stream, in thr middle of a big clump of dead wood that had collected on a bush that had managed to grow in the middle of the flowing water.
They had been close to these guys three times now. They had to hide in a tree while the rangers took lunch. They knew that Francis had two kids and one was flunking school. The other was just starting school.
The other had traveled, been all over, even places that they hadn't read about in books. When he had lost the league challenge for the third time and has since began a splendid career in the Rangers. Saving trainer and pokemon alike and bringing in several bad guys of notariety.
"It's fucking cold!" Geetrude held her bag over her head.
"Stand upstream of me." Shade suggested.
"Why don't we just teleport to those trees over there?" Gertrude asked.
"We need a distraction." Shade replied.
"Hold on." The machoke in the group felt around in the bush and pulled out a Marill. They conversed for a bit then the aquatic, fairy mouse was off. Soon a swarm of Marill and other aquatic pokemon rushed from the water and after the rangers.
"Okay, so you speak Marill." Gertrude seemed surprised.
"One of the kids I watched had one. Pretty funny. Leave the berries, that's the price of freedom." He watched in amusement as the two rangers tried to keep the wild pokemon out of their packs and tents.
Gertrude looped her arms with Shade and Broken and they teleported off into the woods beyond the south bank.

Welcome to Beach Wood.
That sign was like heaven. The people here knew their town wasn't a tourist destination. People who came here were lost, desperate, or up to no good. Shade was desperate.
She and Broken had slogged through a swamp while Gertrude slept in her luxury ball. Shade reasoned that she would have done the same if she had the choice, then spent the rest of the walk into town wondering if she could wind up in a pokeball.
She finally reached an inn next to the beach. A pebble covered strip that had rocky patches of sand and as the name of the town had described, drift wood from the swampy end of the river. A saw mill was the town mainstay and the other boats here were only here for the timber provided by the mill.
Shade set a hundred poke on the table. "One night, the suite."
"Name?"
"N. O. Body."
The woman wrote it down and handed them the key. "You missed dinner. Breakfast is at six."
"Three continental breakfasts, the works. Just bring them to the room." Shade yawned. "Knock loudly." Shade set another hundred poke on the counter. "Keep the change."

Cops swept the town, a door to door search. The brief tidal wave of authority forced the team to hide out in the old speak easy. Broken loaded up on spirits and beer while Gertrude picked out some wines. Shade took tally of what she owed the inn keeper.
By early evening Shade had thanked the woman for helping her out and boarded the first boat to Johto.
"Here." Broken handed her a big ginger root. "Helps with sea sickness." He gave Gertrude a smaller one. "I know you like it." He told the Gardevoir.
