Part Thirteen: Some Aftermath
The first night Jorja was gone, Gojyo hand washed Scarlet’s sheets. He didn’t know where the laundry was and had no desire to ask. He just took them into the shower. As he washed them he noticed a dark spot and froze. He broke down when he saw the blood, that he knew he caused. He leaned against the wall and slid down. He tucked his knees up and hoped the water would wash away some of the pain. He badgered himself with a flood of questions. Why did he have to risk it? Why didn’t he declare a hands off when he found out what she was? Was he really an out of control letch like everyone accused me of being? Why did he feel like he had something to prove? Why did he care so much for her in such a short amount of time and why did that matter anyway? The fact was he did. The fact remained that somewhere, where he couldn’t be, she was hurting. Hurting because of him. He buried his face in the sheet and gave a damn if he looked pathetic or weak.
Eventually, he regained his grip on himself and washed himself and her sheet.
He carefully folded her sheets and put them on her mattress. He wanted to be in her room to at least feel her presence, but couldn’t get himself to sleep in her bed. He slept on the floor next to her bed.
Everyday Gojyo walked to the infirmary to ask about Scarlet. Everyday he was told that Scarlet was still in isolation. He hadn’t even had the desire to pick a fight with Goku.
Hakkai and Goku took the time to go back to their campsite and gather all their things. They now at least had a change of clothes.
Goku had smoothed things over with Kyla. They had a heartfelt conversation about fears and desires. They had agreed to take whatever it was that they had at a much slower pace. It was now back to the flirting and kissing that they were both comfortable with.
Tasha had been running since Jorja left. With the High Priestess gone, and the new second in command down, the responsibility of leadership fell on her shoulders. She had no idea Jorja had so much to do.
Hakkai caught up with her during a brief moment of downtime after her dinner.
She smiled at him as he walked up to the table. “I see you are feeling better. You aretingting around much better.”
He smiled, “Yes, thank you for everything.” He sat down and sighed, “I owe you an apology.”
She shook her head, “You owe me nothing. You never did.”
Hakkai looked down at the table and then back up at her. “I feel I do. I didn’t mean to reject you. It’s just….”
“Hakkai, we had a little fun. That’s all it was. It might have become more later down the road, but right now it was just a little fun. You have a lot of healing to do before you can ….” Her voice trailed off.
He nodded, “Yes, you are right.”
She giggled ,”You , my sweet, are an emotional wreck. That’s something you have to deal with on your own.” She stood to gather her dishes. “Just keep in mind, I’m always here for you.” As she walked away she felt the weight of thedededed conversation lift from her. It went much better than she expected. She hid her feelings well and told him exactly what he wanted to hear.
Hakkai rested his head in his hand. He knew she was correct, but that wasn’t what he wanted to hear.
Sanzo sat back in his chair and flipped the page of his newspaper. He was happy that everyone was so wrapped up in their own issues. He’d finally had some solid quality solitude. Then, he saw Hakkai. He sighed and rustled the paper louder.
Hakkai looked up and noticed Sanzo sitting alone. He thought about how much his friend must be enjoying his precious solitude and slowly walked from the dinning hall.
Sanzo watched Hakkai leave the room. The peace had just reached impossible. He folded the paper and mentally explored options. He noticed Gojyo had slipped into the dining room and was pouring himself a cup of coffee. Sanzo stood up and slipped out of the dinning hall.
He quickly walked down the hall and stepped up to Scarlet’s chamber door. He put an ear to the door and noted the silence. He stepped in and located Gojyo’s pack. He pulled out all of the clothes and turned them all inside out.
He looked at Goku’s pack and did the same.
As he repacked the packs he would have sworn that he heard Kouryuu laugh. They’ll never suspect me, just like they have yet to figure out all the others.

Kougaiji titled his head up, “So, let me get this straight. Homura has the child. And, Mikia‘s betrayed you.”
Jorja nodded. “If you don’t have Thea, that means Homura must have her.”
Kougaiji remembered her description of the child’s power. He knew this wasn’t good.
“Old friend, I need to further complicate this matter.”
“How’s that, Jorja?”
“I’ve received the assistance of the Sanzo party.”
“So, we’ll need a brief truce. Do you think they’ll agree to that?”
“Yes, I do.”
Kougaiji owed Homura --- big time. He also couldn’t be bested by the Sanzo party. “Tell me what you need us to do.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Ni looked down at his screen. “I see our Prince is up to his old games.”
The female scientist turned in her chair, “What are you talking about?”
Ni chuckled and pointed at the screen, “Fiends and fire wind…it can only be him.”
She shook her head as she leaned over to view the screen. “He’s here. He’s entertaining a lady friend. That’s not him.”
Ni raised an eyebrow and snickered, “Oh, this is just so much fun.”
Ms. Huang quickly left the observatory.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dokugakuji paled when she told him the news. He ran down the hall to Kougaiji.
He entered the room. “Kou, we have a problem.”
The two men whispered and Jorja politely turned her head.
Kougaiji took in a breath, “I think we may have found her.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thea trembled as the fire wind surrounded her, “Mikia! I can’t stop it!”
Mikia sat down on a rock fe dfe distance away, “You have to or it will hurt.”
Thea caught the briefest wisp of singed hair and struggled to control the wind. Her muscles trembled; the tendons in her hands protruded under the skin. She shoved her hands out and over her head. She began to cry out and yell.
Mikia watch as Thea took on a dark hue. The child’s clothing ripped at the seams as she grew. Mikia saw Thea’s arms lengthen and her hair grow. Mikia’s mouth dropped. What have I done?
The now suddenly seven year old body trembled and rose from the ground. Thea’s headdress flew from her head and burned in the wind. “I can’t control it!” All traces of her speech impediment were now gone.
“You have too!” Mikia yelled back. Gods know I can’t.
Thea stretched and strained within her skin. The pain from her rapidly growing body mixed with the searing pain in her mind. She felt a sharp piercing pain at in her right temple and it shot down her body. Her eyes rolled back and she fell to the ground. She landed with such force, she bounced.
Mikia saw Thea go down. The fire wind swirled around her briefly and with the presence of it’s summoner gone it eventually faded. Mikia walked over to the limp body and grabbed Thea’s wrists.
Mikia dragged Thea back into the house and tossed her unconscious form in the cage. She tossed a two sizes too big robe into the cage and muttered, “Grow into this.” She slammed the door closed.

Not knowing anything solid about Scarlet’s condition was eating at Gojyo. He knew she was somewhere in this place and he was going to find her. We wandered the halls listening, looking and thinking.
As he approached a corner he heard Cassie’s and Kyla’s voice. He stopped and pressed his body against the wall.
Cassie sighed, “She’s getting stronger.”
Kyla looked up at the older wiser woman, “She keeps asking for Gojyo.”
Gojyo felt a smile on his face spontaneously form. This was good news.
Cassie nodded, “Yeah, when she thinks she is strong enough, things will get back to normal.”
“You know he’s going to be around to ask about her.”
“Yes, I know.”
“What should we tell him?”
“Same thing we’ve always told him. Scarlet will come out when she’s ready to see him.”
Kyla laughed, “She’s been wanting to see him since it happened.”
Their voices and footsteps faded down the hall.
Gojyo peeked around the corner and slipped up to the door they were standing at. He slowly cracked the door and saw a cloaked figure kneeling at a table. He slipped into the shadows and he immediately felt like he didn’t belong where he was. He felt like he was breaking some kind of rule and he was doing something wrong. He knew that cloaked figure was Scarlet and he didn’t care about rules.
He stepped into the light.
Scarlet felt the circle shatter and looked around. “Gojyo?”
He smiled. “How are you doing?” He thought about all the practiced conversations in his head. The words he’d planned to tell her. All of that seemed meaningless now.
Scarlet stood up and lifted the hood of the cloak off her face. “You shouldn’t be in here.”
That wasn’t the warm greeting he expected, but he shrugged it off. “Well then, let’s leave.” He stretched a hand out to her.
She nodded and took his hand. She paused at the door and with a small flourish of her hand all the candles went out.
“What is that room? It’s beautiful.”
She smiled, “It’s the private ritual room.”
“So I saw some kinda of secret witchy-poo thing.”
She chuckled, “Yes, and now I’m sorry but I have to kill you.”
He laughed, “I think I’m going to like the way you’ll kill me.”
Their fingers interlaced as they walked down the hall. They arrived at her chamber door and she looked at Gojyo. “I really don’t know how far we should push this.”
Gojyo nodded. “Not at all.” He didn’t dare risk hurting her again.
They entered her chamber and she sighed. “I need a shower. Oh! Someone washed the sheets.” She smiled.
“Yeah, someone did.” Gojyo thought a shower would be nice too.
He rummaged in his pack for his change of clothes and cursed. “Damn Monkey!”
Scarlet held towels in her hand, “What?”
“That little prick as turned all my clothes inside out! Oh, I’ll get him for this.” Gojyo shook his head as he took one of the offered towels.
The went into the shower room and used separate stalls. After they were dried and dressed, they went down to the dining hall.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They walked into the dining room and Hakkai smiled at Scarlet. “You’re up!”
She smiled back at him, “You are too.”
Sanzo folded the paper and removed his glasses. He knew something was different about Scarlet, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
Goku barreled into the dining hall, “Ok Sprite! What’s the big idea?”
Sanzo put a hand to his face.
Gojyo spun around, “Exactly, the question for you Monkey!”
They glared at each other, each waiting for the other to take the first strike.
Sanzo cupped his hand around his forehead and bellowed, “Oh for-the-love-of-god! Can’t you two get along?!” Normality is nice.
The two looked at the clandestine trickster. Gojyo yelled, “But Monkey ---”
“I didn’t do shit you prev!”
Hakkai chuckled, “Now, now. Just calm down, Sanzo still has his gun.”
Kouryuu rolled in laughter. Sanzo pressed his hand to his face and cringed to hide the smile.
Scarlet laughed. Gojyo smiled. Goku pouted. Hakkai looked at Sanzo and broke into a sweat.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jorja walked briskly down the hall and heard the commotion. She opened the door and walked into the dinning hall.
“You’ve returned!” Scarlet squealed.
“So, have you.” Jorja hugged her friend, and whispered “I’ll explain later, can you fight?”
Scarlet backed out of the hug, “For you, I’ll find a way.”
Jorja scanned the group, “We’ve found them. We need to leave.”
Sanzo stood up and grumbled, “No god damn horses.”
Jorja stifled a snicker. “Ok. We‘ll travel by more efficient means.”
Scarlet and Jorja dressed in their battle regalia as the men gathered their items.
Tasha went to her closet and pulled out a white pantsuit. She felt the cloth between her fingers and shook her head. Just doesn’t feel right. She chose to remain clad in purple.
Kyla loudly protested being left behind. Jorja knew she wasn’t nearly ready for this type of engagement. Jorja sighed and placed her hands on the young woman’s shoulders. “If anything happens to us…it’s all on you.”
Kyla’s mouth dropped open and her shoulders sagged. The realization that she could be thrust in the role of High Priestess long before she was ready, slammed into her and weighed her down. “Better make sure nothing happens.” She muttered as the group left for ground level.
The seven of them emerged from the mouth of the cave and looked at the forest around them. “You should know that I have arranged for additional help.” She scanned their faces.
Hakkai nodded, ”Kougaiji agreed to a temporary truce?”
Jorja nodded. “Remember when I told you we have powers that you didn’t know yet? Well, here goes…this will be strange if you haven’t done it before.” Jorja pushed her hands out and manipulated her hands in a silent spell.
