A/N- I’m going be jumping through Tohru’s pregnancy to keep the interest level up. ^_^
~Two months later~
Nikkou had done nothing but complain the whole time he and Tohru were moving. He had been happy that he didn’t have to be in Miss Hongo, the evil forth grade teacher’s class. It was decided that they would live with the cat. Every Saturday evening since school started, Kyo and Tohru had been going down to Ousaka to pick up more of their stuff and visit with Uo and Hana, both of whom where looking for new houses in their hometown. The cat and former riceball had been married a month prior, nothing fancy, just immediate family; the zodiac, the new head of family, Uo, Shishi, Hana, Ishiku, Aki and Kazuma. Kyo had convinced himself that things would not change between him and Tohru. He was wrong. In all honesty, the cat hadn’t stopped smiling.
He even smiled as he and Tohru picked up the last of her boxes. Kyo stood on the steps of what used to Tohru’s house looking at the three friends. Tohru hugged the both of them in turn.
“I can’t wait until you both get your houses and we’re neighbors again.”
Uo looked at Kyo, standing at the top of the stairs. Sauri had come and lay on his feet. “We don’t want to keep you from your new husband.” She winked at Tohru who blushed. Her husband… she couldn’t get over the sound of that.
“Is he difficult to live with?” Hana asked.
“No, he’s been nothing but attentive since we got married.” Tohru said. She remembered how wonderful the wedding night had been. Kyo took his time making sure everything was perfect. She really did feel special, worshiped. Sure, he said he worshiped her, but that time she really felt it.
“Wow, she must really be love sick. Just look at that smile on her face.” Uo said. Tohru blushed harder.
Kyo tried not to pry. What they talked about was their own business. But still, it would be nice to know if he was the topic of discussion. Tohru’s phone rang and Kyo answered it, thinking it was one of the cleaning ladies.
“Hon- Sohma Cleaning Services.” He said.
“Kyo?” Haru rasped into the phone. It sounded like he’d been crying.
“What happened?” the cat asked. There would be only one reason why Haru would be crying; Rin.
“Rin… she was hit by a car. She’s in the hospital-” Haru’s voice grew distant as he moved back from the phone. Momiji’s voice sounded through the receiver, “We need you guys to come back, Hatori too, since he’s her doctor.”
“I understand.” Kyo hung up without saying good bye. It was clear why Haru was so upset. Never mind the fact that the woman he loved was in an accident; Rin was still pregnant, the baby could be hurt as well.
“Tohru,” the cat called from the steps picking up the final box from her house and putting it in Hatori’s trunk. As soon and the woman came over, Kyo spoke to both her and the doctor. “Rin’s been in an accident. We need to get back as soon as possible.” Tohru didn’t say a word as she slid into the car. Kyo took front and they all speeded to the hospital.

Haru stared blankly at the window into the operating room where Rin was being kept. The heart monitor and breathing machine keeping a regular rhythm. ‘If she where conscious, she’d be pissed’ the ox thought with no measure of humor. Rin hated hospitals. He watched in horror as they dropped another blood soaked towel into the trash. Another IV was added to her hand, this one giving her blood. One of the doctors came out of the room holding a blanket.
“Sohma-san?” She asked. Haru nodded once. “It’s a boy. I’m sorry… but we don’t expect him to live through the night. We thought you would want to see him just in case he doesn’t.” The doctor held the blanket out to Haru. The ox deftly took the child into his arms and looked down at his son. He was so small and seemingly so delicate. The baby had yet to be given his first bath so some of the birth fluid remained, sticking to his skin. The infant took rasping breaths and started to fuss a little. Haru held him closer as rocked him gently, whispering soft words.
“Had you or your wife picked out a name for him?” The doctor asked.
“Tama.” The ox said still holding the baby. The doctor nodded and went back it to the ER. Haru was quiet as he listened to the baby gasp for air. He was in pain and there was nothing that could be done about it. The doctor emerged once more with a “follow me.”
They walked to the nursery where Haru had to relinquish his child to the skilled hands of the nurses.
“Why is he gasping for breaths?” Haru asked.
“Tama’s lungs aren’t finished forming yet. We will be keeping an eye on him tonight but it doesn’t look good.” The doctor said typing something on the computer, “Could I have your full name please?” she asked.
“Hatsuharu Sohma.” He answered, still feeling numb. The printer spit out a document and the doctor asked him to sign. Haru looked at it and noticed it was a birth certificate. The ox was delivered back to the waiting room to sit with his cousins, none of whom dared to ask questions.
“Haru?” Kyo asked when he, Tohru and Hatori finally made it. Momiji intercepted them, taking the bevy to the side.
“Rin was crossing the street when a drunk driver came out of nowhere and hit her.”
“Oh, my, Rin,” Tohru was on the verge of tears.
“They had to do an emergency operation and remove the baby because it was endangering her life.” The rabbit continued. “I think he just got back from the nursery, but we’ve been kind of afraid to ask.” Tohru looked over at Haru who now had his face buried in his hands, shoulders visibly shaking with the effort not to cry. Tohru had to do something… anything. She hated seeing people suffer. The young woman sat next to Haru and lightly rubbed his back. The ox turned his face to her, eyes red rimmed and a little puffy.
“Did you see your baby?” she asked softly.
Haru nodded, “He’s in the ICU for newborns. They say he might not…” Haru swallowed, closing his eyes as if the convulsion of his throat was physically painful, “He may not even live the night.” Haru hid his face in his hands again. “Why… why is this happening? What did she do to deserve this?” The ox’s voice broke then and his shoulders shook harder.
“Haru…” Tohru didn’t know what to say. She couldn’t think of what she could say that would be of any comfort. She looked to Kyo for guidance. He was currently holding a sobbing Kagura. Almost as if he knew she was staring at him, Kyo turned to gaze at Tohru with an expression the very clearly said “I don’t know.” “Haru… I don’t know what will happen, but what ever the outcome, you are strong enough to handle it… you need to be strong for them. I have faith in you, and you need to have faith in your baby and Rin.”
“Tama.” Haru whispered, his voice too hoarse for the one word to be said any loader.
“Excuse me?” Tohru asked.
“The baby… his name is Tama.”
“Tama… It’s a good name.” Tohru said softly.
“Rin picked it out.” Haru whispered. They sat quietly for some time before Hatori came back into the waiting room, motioning for the ox to follow. Kyo took Haru’s empty seat grasping Tohru’s hand, his thumb rubbing soft circles on her warm flesh. He couldn’t even imagine what he would do if Tohru was injured, never mind the baby. Their child wasn’t… real yet. The young woman’s stomach had yet to distend with it. Kyo looked at her finally but what he saw nearly killed him. Tohru sat frozen like a statue in the chair, eyes staring at some spot on the ground and the cat wondered if she even realized she was crying. The tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
“Tohru?” Kyo asked in a low whisper.
“I don’t know what I would do if anything happened to you or Nikkou.” Tohru took in a deep breath that released itself as a quivering sigh. A loud bang from the hall caught everyone’s attention and turned to see Haru with his fist through the wall. Hatori was of course the picture of calm. He was speaking in a very even tone like one might expect someone who was talking a madman off the roof, or to a caged predator. Haru walked past the doctor into one on the rooms. Tohru felt herself following him. She reached for the knob before noticing there was a window. Through it she could see the ox pull a chair next to the bed and take the horses hand into his. He started speaking to her then, not that Tohru could hear any of what was said. She felt Kyo’s warmth behind her before the cat wrapped his arms around her shoulders.
“Kyo… I want to go home… I want to… I want to hold my little boy.” Tohru felt a fresh wave of tears.
The cat carefully leaned forward and laid a kiss in her hair. “Me too.”

Haru held Rin’s hand as he pleaded with her to wake up soon. She looked so small in the hospital bed surrounded by beeping machines. He felt a drop of water land on his hand and it occurred to him that he’d been crying.
“Rin please… Tohru said… something just now. She said I have to be strong for you and Tama but I realized I’m not strong for you… I’m strong because of you.”
