In the end, Yohji had to charm Manx
into staying with Brianna. The red-haired
woman sat in stony silence, watching the younger girl pace the room.
Slowly, the frost began to melt, as Brianna’s fear was obviously for
the assassins.
“They’ll be
fine.”
The artist
jumped, the sound of Manx’s voice startling her out of her worries. Her eyes were wide with panic.
“They’ll be
fine. They’re the best that we have.”
Manx shrugged. “They’ve come back from the dead, so I doubt
that this mission will really be that difficult for them.”
“What?” The artist sank to the couch.
“Oh, they
didn’t tell you?” Manx smirked. “When Abysinnian’s sister – do you even know
about her?”
“Aya-chan,
yes.” Brianna noticed the anger in Manx’s
eyes, but ignored it.
“Well, they
were dispatched to kill the members of Estet who held her, and their assassins
Shwartz. The building collapsed and
sank into the sea.” She brushed her
hair back over her shoulder. “We thought
they’d drowned, but not even a week later, they all showed up. Almost none the worse for wear.”
“A-amazing.”
“They’ll come
home. I’ve never seen Ay-them act this
way before over anyone.” She lowered
her voice a little. “How did
you get Yohji to stop flirting with me?”
“I think he’s
afraid I’ll take it the wrong way if he flirts with anyone.” Brianna giggled, forgetting both to be worried,
and who she was talking with.
“How did you
meet them?” Manx had to smile at the
surprise. “I only know what’s in your
file. Anything involving Weiss is a
mystery to me.”
“Oh. I stopped in the shop one morning, and next
thing I knew, Yohji was hunting me down and dragging me into their lives. I couldn’t get rid of them! Sending me flowers, making me spend time with
them – they were absolutely relentless.”
“All of them?”
The older woman raised an eyebrow. “Even
Abyssinian? I can’t see him making a fool out of himself
over a woman.”
“All of them.”
Brianna laughed. “Aya’s done his fair share of awkward conversations
and flirting.”
“We’ve…always
wondered. Is it true that Balinese and
Abyssinian are lovers?” There was pain
in her emerald eyes, and Brianna took pity on her.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s just…”
“I know. I can understand. If they hadn’t brought me into their lives the way they have, I
would feel the same way.” Her eyes glittered
wickedly. “Want to see their room?”
Manx opened
her mouth to answer, but before she could say anything, a tired voice responded.
“She might want to, but it’s off limits to all girls but you, jo-chan.”
“Yohji!” The artist leaped to her feet to hug the blonde
assassin. He kissed her tears away with
a smile as Aya joined them, running his long fingers through her hair as she
turned to fling herself into his arms, kissing him swiftly before moving on
to Ken and Omi. Manx watched, a part
of her still jealous, but the sheer exuberant happiness that all five of them
were exuding began to get through to her.
As Brianna
fussed over the dangerous killers as though they were the cats they were codenamed
for, Manx slipped out, leaving them to their little family.
Pulling jackets
off and checking for wounds, Brianna was finally able to heave a sigh of relief.
Apart from minor cuts and scrapes, Yohji had some bruises on his hands
from his wire, Ken had a black eye, and Omi had a sprained ankle.
Aya had escaped without much of anything.
“Thank god
you’re all okay.” She fell back onto
the couch between Aya and Yohji. She
glared at them. “I think you only get
one ‘get out of death free’ card, so you all have to be more careful.”
“Manx blabbed.”
Ken flopped back in his chair.
“Someone was
bound to.” Omi propped his swollen foot
up on the table, sighing.
“We weren’t
even in much danger.” Ken shrugged.
“Yohji’s boyfriend convinced his lover to save us.”
“He is NOT
my boyfriend!” Yohji glared at Ken,
all exasperated fury.
“That’s not
what he says.” Aya raised an
elegant eyebrow.
The blonde
whined ‘Ayaaaaaaan” as he reached across Brianna to push at the redhead’s shoulder.
“Boys! I just have one question.” The girl’s voice was severe, and most of the
assassins flinched a little at her tone. “Is
this guy pretty?” She dissolved into
giggles at the looks of astonishment on their faces. She grabbed her sketchpad off of the coffee
table and began to draw. A few minutes
later she presented a rough sketch of a man with long hair. “This him?”
Yohji groaned.
“Schuldich.”
Brianna frowned
at the empty space that her sketch seemed to curl around. Her hand flew across the paper again, filling
in the paper with a delicate young man. Aya, peering over her shoulder, smiled. “That’s Nagi. You’re talented.
There’s no way you could have ever seen them.”
“Sometimes
my trick works, and sometimes it doesn’t.”
She shrugged. The silence deepened
as her pencil skritched across the heavy drawing paper, and the soft sounds
of men falling asleep punctuated the air. Finally, she eased off the couch and roused Omi. A quick check of his ankle ascertained that
it didn’t need to be wrapped, and she woke Ken to help the younger boy up to
bed.
She went back
to the couch, picking up Yohji’s hand and kissing the bruises that decorated
the tawny skin. He opened lazy green
eyes to see her kneeling at his feet. Aya’s lavender gaze fixed on her as well. “You two should get some sleep as well.”
“Mm.” Aya rose, holding his hands out to his companions.
Yohji accepted the help up, but Brianna shook her head.
“I’ll come to bed in a while.”
Aya’s fingers
tangled in her hair for a moment, and he smiled at her. “Our bed tonight.”
“Don’t be
long.” Yohji wrapped an arm around Aya’s
waist as he grinned at the girl. She
nodded, and they left, still clinging to one another.
Alone in the
darkened living room, she continued to draw, switching to a larger sketchpad.
Hours later,
she padded softly down the hallway, checking on Omi and Ken and ending at Aya
and Yohji’s door. The two men were tangled
together in the bed, sheets and comforter rumpled around them, exposing long
lines of skin.
Brianna shut
the door quietly, going to her room to change out of her clothes and into a
satin pajama set. And then she returned
to the dark bedroom, curling up next to Yohji in the big bed.
As her weight
shifted the mattress, a long arm snaked around her waist, dragging her across
to be cradled between the two assassins.
