Sorry I've been AWOL! I had a massive dose of drama at work, home, and two midterms packed very close together! I damn near threw myself into traffic, but I survived it without hurting myself or anyone else (for now) and I've come back to update! I will dish out personal hellos next time. Sorry in advance as this chapter is quite weak! lemme know whatchoo think though :/
Chapter 12: After Dinner Show
Alex touched down in front of the Vatican and ran full tilt toward the Cardinal’s office. A wild sort of desperation stole the breath from her as all her senses strained to pick up the tiniest change in her surroundings. She prayed silently, only stopping when the deafening clomp of her boots drove her to madness. She careened down the hallways repeating her mantra: please let them be all right. When she finally reached the Cardinal’s office, out of breath, her mind spinning, she burst into the room without knocking. Leon was standing, blocking the children and the Cardinal, two guns aimed straight at Alex’s heart. Once he recognized her, he put his guns away and leveled a questioning gaze at her. Catherina was the first in the room to recover.
“Alex, what’s going on?”
“My children...” Alex swallowed hard as three faces poked out from behind Leon’s large frame, gazing at their mother in trepidation.
“Mother?” Cendricus was the first to come around from behind Leon and approach her. Alex kneeled and pulled him into a suffocating embrace. He grimaced but allowed her to hold him as tightly as she needed while his brother and sister joined in a group hug.
“Mama, what’s wrong?” Aurora’s voice was tiny and shaken. Alex choked down her emotions as she held her children, the relief overwhelming her.
“Nothing, babies. I just needed to see you. I needed to know you were all right.”
“We’re fine, Mother.” Ilarius rested his cheek against the top of her head as she sniffled quietly, nodding weakly.
“I know. You can’t leave my sight while you’re here, all right?”
“What happened, Mom?” Cendricus cast her a stern searching glance but she smiled and brushed away his concern.
“Oh, nothing. I just suddenly felt like seeing you guys.”
“Mama...” Aurora had picked up on her Mother’s strong and frightening array of emotions, her voice quavering in her confusion.
“Shh. It’s all right, Little Love.” Alex covered her face in kisses and rubbed the tip of their noses together.
“Alex, where is the rest of the team? Is everyone all right?” Catherina tried to cover the concern in her voice.
“Yes, quite! I left them with clean up duty, I’m afraid, but they’re none the worse for wear.”
“All right. Perhaps the children would like some dinner then?”
“Food!” Aurora’s excited outburst got a round of hearty laughs from everyone in the room.
“Sounds like a good idea to me. Sorry about barging in, Mother.”
“Don’t worry about it. Nothing shocks me anymore.” The Cardinal smiled warmly at Alex and the children and watched as she picked up her daughter and left, followed by the twins. Leon was silent, staring at the door contemplatively for some moments before turning to Catherina.
“What do you suppose that was about?” Leon turned to the Cardinal, a serious look on his face.
“Only one person could evoke such panic in her, after all she’s been through.”
“I suppose the RCO is breaking their long silence.”
“I only hope that we’ll be able to fend them off as well as we did last time. I will never forgive myself if I cannot protect her this time.” The Cardinal’s eyes were drawn to a bright blue feather that lay forgotten on the floor, covering a dark spot of blood.
It was late and the children had gone to bed some hours earlier. Alex sat in a courtyard just yards away from where her children slept. Her hair was still loose and her wings sat tucked at her back. She was lost in thought, as usual, and didn’t notice her company until he was quite close.
“Quite an impressive display you put on.”
“I’m not here to impress anyone.” Alex adopted the most sour tone she could and wished with all her might for him to leave her in peace. Instead of leaving, he drew close, his presence causing her sensitive wings to prickle with his proximity.
“Nevertheless, you succeed.” The hair on the back of Alex’s neck stood on end as he drew closer, his cold breath ghosting over her ear.
“So noted.” Alex stood to walk away, but her movement was impeded by a column of shadows that steadily solidified into Alucard. “Has anyone ever told you that you’re insufferable?”
“I haven’t heard it in quite a while, but yes, I’ve heard it before.” Alucard smiled, his most alluring fanged grin, and Alex noticed that he wasn’t wearing his usual attire. His ridiculous duster and hat combo were gone, as were the cravat and glasses. He only wore his simple white shirt, the first few buttons of which were undone, his slacks, and his gloves. Alex took a moment to inspect the design on the top of his gloves, intrigued despite herself.
“Perhaps you should hear it more often. Just to keep you down to a manageable size.” Alucard’s grin spread and he inhaled through his teeth as though he were pained. He raised a hand over his heart, looking up at Alex through his messy bangs.
“You wound me, My Lady.”
“Nonsense, I can show you what a real wound looks like, if you are truly unable to tell the difference.”
“Don’t tease me so, My Lady.” He gave her the title almost derisively as he drew close again, his body nearly pressed against hers. “Teasing can get you in trouble.”
“I doubt you could give me any serious trouble, Vampire.” Alex bared her own fangs, her hair swirling around her, her voice growing slightly deeper.
“Shall we put it to the test?” Alucard’s grin was shameless, his eyes glowing an eerie red in the darkness. Alex’s eyes glowed blue as she glared at him, but she refused to take his bait.
“You’re not worth my time.” Alex did an about-face, only to find herself immobilized by Alucard’s shadows.
“It’s not very polite to turn your back on someone in the middle of a conversation, much less is it advisable in the presence of a potential opponent.” Alex laughed outright.
“I doubt your Mistress would appreciate the pressure you’re placing on our political ties.” Alucard grinned maliciously, not quite hiding his irritation at Alex’s words.
“In this particular vein, I don’t particularly care what my Mistress has to say.” The shadows began to slither around her, brushing against her in rather suggestive ways. Alucard reached out, his finger brushing harshly against the wound in her wing made earlier in the night. The wound was rather deeper than she first though and his probing opened it anew covering his fingertip in blood. He raised the digit to his lips, adopting an almost orgasmic expression. Alex narrowed her eyes at him, a predatory grin spreading across her face.
“Careful now. That look makes my blood boil.”
“You want boiling blood? Then you shall have it.” Alex released her Crusnik form, her eyes glowing brightly, her fangs elongating dangerously. Alucard grinned, thrilled that she’d shown him her true form once more. Her hair swirled around her in great lazy arcs as she forced his shadows to release her. Though his face never betrayed him, he was quite shocked to find she exerted some force upon him that forced him to take his humanoid shape, rather than the shadowy mist he was so fond of. Her grin grew more feral as she used more magic to immobilize him, giving him the sensation of being pulled toward her from deep within his body.
“I suppose you’ve heard that some rare Methuselah are born with special abilities, such as pyromancy?” Alex drew him close to her, delighting in his silent struggle against her unseen hold.
“Yes, what of it?” She chuckled as his facade slipped just a bit. Alex leaned forward, forcing her presence on him as he had done to her mere moments before. She inhaled the old scent of his blood, tracing the sculpted line of his throat with her nose.
“Well, then I suppose that you know this elemental gift is not limited to fire, but indeed, extends to all the four elements.” Alex had no visible grasp on Alucard, yet he was steadily lifted off the ground, his legs bound together, his arms stretched out to either side, mimicking the stance of a crucifix. Alucard strained against being positioned, but once again found that his was held fast by his very bones.
“If I’d known that pursuing you would entail listening to long boring lectures on demon physiology, I might have thought twice.” Alex laughed at Alucard’s attempt to downplay the situation.
“I’d hate to bore a suitor and guest. Allow me to heat things up.” Alex’s icy breath ghosted over Alucard’s throat, sending a pleasant shiver down his spine. Before he could retort he felt an unfamiliar warmth envelope his entire body. He suddenly felt feverish, a sensation he hadn’t felt in untold years. His expression grew sour and his struggling increased.
“Not hot enough for you?” Alex released a most disturbing chuckle that rang with her Crusnik overtone. Alucard could feel his body temperature rising to an uncomfortable level, increasing until he was gritting his teeth with the burn that engulfed his body. Alex released him and gripped the front of his shirt, grinning maniacally at him.
“I suppose you think you’re clever, do you?” Alucard’s normally calm features were pulled taut with anger. He bared his fangs, a growl escaping between his clenched teeth. He seized her wrists and held them painfully. Alex let her head fall back and laughed loudly. Despite himself, Alucard’s features relaxed into a more quizzical mask. Alex grinned at him again, her palms seared where he gripped her. He dropped her wrists and glared down at her haughtily.
"I think I’m perfectly capable of taking on whatever you can conjure up, Vampire.”
“You haven’t seen a fraction of what I can do.”
“A fraction? No, I imagine not. But don’t think for a moment that I don’t know what you’re capable of. I may not know every minute detail of your long life, Alucard, but I know more about your tactics than anyone who’s ever faced you. I never walk into a battle unarmed.”
“You might be careful whose toes you tread upon, young woman. I’ve never yet met my match and I trust you’ll forgive me for doubting that you are it.”
“Seeing is believing, Alucard. How many opponents have you come across that can control the very cells in your body through the water molecules they contain?” Alex’s half-lidded eyes shone with an intense light, her fangs still hanging over her flushed lower lip. She was as intriguing as ever, her moods changing as quickly as the weather, and she’d managed to arouse his anger among other things. Alucard slipped back into his easy arrogant manner, grinning at her lasciviously.
“I now know what it truly means to have one’s blood boil. Care to show me the true meaning of any other quaint sayings?” Alex’s fang worried her lower lip absentmindedly as she considered him.
“Haven’t you been known to say something about the stirring of your loins when commanded to do battle? That might be fun to enact. I’m sure I could inflict a true wound with the demonstration of that one.” Alucard hissed in mock injury again.
“Madam, you are truly an artful tease. The depth and breadth of your knowledge knows no bounds.” Alex laughed at the return of Alucard’s flirtatious manner.
“Careful what you wish for, Alucard. If you seek an opponent that can obliterate you, you may find yourself surprised what kind of quiet moody packaging it might come in.” Alex winked at him and turned to leave. Alucard watched her go, dissolving into his shadows and disappearing. Alex smiled to herself in the dark hallway as she felt his presence retreating. She had taken maybe a dozen steps before she realized she still wasn’t alone. Alex looked up to find Abel standing against a wall with a perfect vantage point of where she’d just been, talking to Alucard.
“Nothing like giving an all powerful Vampire a run for his money, hmm?” Abel’s glasses glinted in the moonlight, his lips pulled into a gentle smile. Alex smiled back at him, flexing her wings unconsciously. She watched as Abel’s nostrils flared ever-so-slightly, catching the scent of blood from her wound. His smile slowly faded, his features settling into a familiar expression of quiet longing.
“How often do you watch me, Abel?” Alex kept her voice even, trying to sound curious rather than scolding.
“Just whenever we cross paths and I haven’t the nerve to intrude.” Alex approached him slowly, smiling warmly at him. He stood up, away from the wall, and looked as though he ached to take her in his arms.
“I’m sorry I’ve given you the impression that you’re always intruding.” Abel looked at her with such a bittersweet longing that she felt a sharp pang of guilt for giving him the cold shoulder all this time. “What you did for the children and me was really sweet.”
“I could see that you missed your children. I also wanted to spend some time with Ilarius and Cendricus.”
Alex nodded, her eyes settling on his lips as she drew closer. Alex stood on tiptoe to press her lips to Abel’s, her wings closing around them slightly. Abel pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her as he traced her lower lip with his tongue. Alex sighed softly, relaxing into him as he deepened their kiss, his tongue slipping past her lips. He kissed her tenderly, rubbing her back until she pulled away for air. Abel leaned forward, resting his forehead against Alex’s until their breathing steadied. He took her face in his hands, kissing her lips and each cheek.
“I don’t need to be inebriated to want this.” The words had tumbled from Alex’s mouth before she’d even had time to think about them. She was relieved when Abel smiled and kissed her again.
“I’m glad.” Abel kissed her again, exploring her deeply. He wanted so desperately to drag his tongue across her fangs and break the skin, but he knew such a gesture was deeply intimate and would most likely drive her away. As the very thought crossed his mind, Alex nipped at his retreating tongue and Abel couldn’t contain the moan that rumbled through his chest. Alex pulled away with a small noise of frustration and smiled up at him, her cheeks flushed.
“I should get to bed.” Alex gazed at him, trying to will the heat from her cheeks.
“Me too.” Abel held her, unable to let her go at that moment, relieved that she didn’t make an immediate move to leave.
“Good night, Abel.” Alex brushed at a stray lock of silver hair, summoning all her will power to pull away from him. She groaned so loudly in her own thoughts that she wondered if he could hear it.
“Good night, Alex.” Abel called after her, smiling as she waved to him. He sighed as she rounded the corner, closing his eyes, clinging to the warm sensation in his lips left behind by her kisses.
