Opening Challenge

Tazzy: Actually, it's more of Circe's way to prove something to herself. Thanks for the congrats. I see sailed past the halfway mark. I'm sure you'll make it.

DarkCrusnikMagician: Don't worry there will be more Cain/Gun interaction soon. Well, you know Cain likes playing with fire.

Kuromei: Thank you for the review. I hope to have more interaction between the two of them soon but the boys just aren't inclined to cooperate right now. *sigh*

To everyone else reading, I hope you enjoy.

*****

Far too soon for Abel’s liking, everyone began to move toward a certain doorway, mumbling under their collective breaths any time one of them saw him. Gun glared at anyone who stared too long, sending them scurrying away from him and Abel. He put one hand at the small of Abel’s back, both as a comfort and to steer him toward the doors. He was not happy about where those doors led.

Abel stared around as they entered what looked like an arena of sorts. There were raised seats all around the outer walls and people were taking their places in various sections. Abel couldn’t suppress the involuntary shudder as he realized what it must mean. It was one thing to think about being challenged but quite another to know it was a certainty and about to occur at any moment.

“Abel, stay close to me and do as I tell you,” Gun said into his ear.

Abel nodded numbly. This could not bode well for him.

“Since you haven’t been approached today I’m guessing they’ve already chosen a champion for you. Or someone has come forward and volunteered,” Gun said, looking around for his family, finally spotting them on one side of the arena. The first thing he noticed was that something was very wrong about the scene before him. His father was holding on to Oracle for dear life and seemed to be crying into his jacket. His mother was on the other side of him with one arm wrapped around Oracle and the other around Reicher, she looked as though all the blood had drained out of her body. All three of them radiated near panic and serious fright. He suddenly started to feel very afraid. It wouldn’t have bothered him so much if not for the fact that he knew both Oracle and his mother were nearly fearless in the face of anything. It was made all the worse when Hunt started to walk toward him and Abel, his expression the grimmest Gun had ever seen on his brother, even during the heat of battle.

“Who challenged?” Gun asked immediately.

“Scáthach.”

Gun shivered slightly. There was an extremely high level of distrust if Scáthach had challenged, she almost never got involved in the adoption proceedings. This was even worse than he had initially feared.

“Who’s championing?”

If at all possible, Hunt’s expression got even grimmer. “Circe.”

***

Circe waited tensely outside the arena doors. This was going to hurt, she just knew it.

Have you suddenly gone mad, Sorceress? came an all too familiar voice into her head.

Hardly.

Why this then? Why fight someone you know you have no hope of winning against? Unless . . .

Unless, what?

Unless you plan on drawing from my dear brother at crucial moments during the fight. That is what you’re planning. Correct?

Yes.

Why? Is it perhaps because he is not yet stable enough in his mind to draw the kind of power this requires?

Circe closed her eyes tightly and when she opened them again, she saw Cain standing before her. “I think, Sorceress, if you plan to draw from him, you should draw from me as well. I’m far more stable in my abilities than he is.”

“I can’t, Cain. The Council put a temporary lock on my abilities; I can only draw from Abel’s Crusnik form.”

“You know that isn’t a problem. He and I are one,” he said, threading one hand through her hair. “Be careful, Sorceress. I’d hate to lose you at this late stage of the game.”
