***This chapter contains major spoilers***
L's sharp ears caught every word of Higuchi's confession play from Misa's phone. The handy new technology of modern age made it have little static to distort the words, and yet, L was a little miffed by the whole ordeal. He chewed on the inside of cheek. He finally substituted his cheek for his thumb where he bit down hard at the tip. Higuchi not only confessed to being Kira, but had promised not to execute criminals for Misa's hand in marriage, which meant that it was perfect evidence to indict him for being Kira, and yet...
L was not satisfied. Without the criminals dying, everyone would be happy, but he still needed to know what Kira's crucial killing method was and without criminal deaths, the percentage of him finding out dropped. He and Light had figured out that Kira could kill with more than just heart attacks, but the question was how? How was it possible for someone to kill with only a face and name, or just a face in the Second Kira's case. There had to be something else they were not aware of, something they were all missing. A device? A poison? An ungodly power or ability? They could not just arrest Kira without knowing what it was that made it happen. L was confident that someone or something was pulling the strings; something had the capability to kill anyone in any amount of time, to clear away memories, relinquish powers and to give those destructive powers unto someone else. He had theorised that killing was Kira's only ability, but until he had more proof, this would only stay a theory. He often thought if Kira was capable of more; for example, could he perhaps stop someone from dying? He knew that Kira could control a person before killing them as he remembered the prisoner's and the messages left to him (L, did you know Gods of Death love apples?). There was so much he needed to know. L needed answers. He needed to know every last detail, every last strand and fabric that was Kira.
Because Kira scared the hell out of him. But it was not the fear that made him cower, oh no, L never cowered. It was fear that pumped his adrenaline and made him wake up in the morning to pursue the largest mass murderer in history. Kira thrilled him on a level that not even sex and sweets could reach. But now he had a whole new reason to experience fear, and it brought him back to the previous question: was killing all Kira could do or was there more?
He touched his stomach. He had never had a physical before, but shouldn't he have realised he was different? He had never felt imbalanced during puberty, and shouldn't he have had a menstrual cycle if the ovaries he wasn't supposed to be carrying actually worked? Of course there was no denying that he was indeed pregnant, but how? Being a hermaphrodite only answered some of the questions.
But now was not the time to think of that. His number one priority was Kira and that was final. He grabbed a sugar cube between his fingers and popped it in his mouth as he listened to Light batter Misa about telling Higuchi that she was arrested under suspicion of being the second Kira.
"We can't let go now, Ryuuzaki," Light said to him, "We still don't know how the murders are done."
"My thought's exactly," L answered him whilst stacking sugar cubes on the handle of his cup of tea, "I'd prefer to find out how Higuchi kills before capturing him." It did not surprise him in the least that Light would bring up exactly what L was thinking; it seemed to be happening more frequently, too.
"And if the executions of the criminals stop, we won't be able to find this out."
"Yes."
"What are you going to do? Misa might be killed if this persists." This had obviously went over Misa's head as her face suddenly dropped three shades of colour.
L paused in his stacking to think over what could be done to turn this situation around and still be pragmatic enough for Light's taste. "Misa-san, you promised Higuchi that you would prove to him that you were the Second Kira, am I correct?"
"Erm, yeah," she answered, "I told him that I was the Second Kira and that I could kill people. Then he said this."
"And can you kill people, Misa-san?"
"Of course not. But Higuchi only wants to get married to Misa, so Misa won't be killed."
"Wrong Misa," Light butted in, "If Higuchi finds out you're not the Second Kira then he will kill you."
"Oh, Light! You're jealous of Higuchi! Don't worry." She smiled cutely at him, "Light is Misa's only love. Nothing can replace him."
"Are you listening to me at all?!" Light shouted.
"There's no need for yelling, Light-kun," the raven head mumbled.
"Ryuuzaki, we can't be thinking about the killing method now," Light said, turning back to the detective, "We've got to arrest Higuchi now."
"In order to protect Misa, correct?"
"Yes!" He leaned on the table toward L. "Misa did this so we could capture him, and we can find out how the murdering is done after we've done so. I know that knowing how the murders are done are prerequisite, but Misa's life could be in jeopardy."
L crunched a sugar cube with his teeth. "In any event, we can only capture Higuchi when the criminals stop dying," he finally said, "Let me think for a little bit." Another sugar cube was popped into his mouth. He contacted Wedy and told her to install cameras and bugs into Higuchi's cars and not his home. Then he turned his attention to Light by looking over his shoulder.
"Please hear out this theory before criticising it," he said, "Light Yagami was Kira, and Kira's powers transferred from him to someone else. But did it transfer because Light Yagami willed it, or is there someone behind Light Yagami that granted him those powers and then move those powers to someone else? Which is it?"
All eyes went from L to Light. The teenager closed his eyes in deep thought, going over what L was saying and deciding on his own conclusion that he knew L would agree with.
He opened his eyes and stared into the detective's dark orbs. "With that premise then Light Yagami willed it." Matsuda's mouth opened in shock and Soichirou swallowed, but neither L or Light payed them any regard. "If there was someone in the background, he would have to be here in this investigation or be watching from the heavens or something like that. If that were the case, he would know what we were discussing right now."
"Once again our thoughts are exactly the same," L stated, lifting his tea cup to sip from it, "If we accept that there is a being in Heaven that is controlling all this, then we would not be able to catch said being. Also, if such a being existed, I'd already be dead or I'd be toyed around with forever." He set down his cup back on its saucer. "No...such a being couldn't exist. Even if Light Yagami is Kira...Kira's powers only work if the one with the powers wants it. Thanks Light! I am now ninety-nine percent better. We'll create a situation where Higuchi can't pass his powers to someone else and make him show us how to kill."
"How are you going to do this?" Soichirou asked.
"We can use the method you wanted and use SakuraTV," he answered, "We'll use SakuraTV to get Higuchi."
"The only problem is that nobody trusts SakuraTV," Light interjected.
"Yes, nobody trusts what's on SakuraTV anymore, however, the ones who do know the truth will know if it's true or not." L dropped some sugar cubes into his tea, making the mixture more sugary than before. "We'll get a three hour and say at the beginning that 'we'll announce who Kira is at the end of the show'."
"But will Higuchi even watch that show?" Matsuda asked.
"We'll have to get Namigawa to call Higuchi and get him to watch the program then," Light instructed, "Then Higuchi will see it and he'll see the person and know that they know the real secret."
"Oh! So we're going to use Aiber then!" said Matsuda, "We're gonna let them know that he was a spy."
"Sorry, but you're wrong," the detective said, "We have to use someone that he thinks he can kill. Someone that he can look up. If it's someone like that, he won't give up until the announcement."
"But who's gonna take the role of someone that might get killed if things go wrong?" Matsuda looked at L for answers, but only received L's stare. He looked at Light, whom was also staring at him, and so was everyone else.
"That's right," Soichirou said aloud, "Matsuda is the only one who can pull it off."
"Yes, it has to be Matsuda."
____________________________________________________________
"I almost pity Matsuda," Light stated casually while he threaded his shirt through the chain. L's half had been removed to allow them both to undress; Light's was never removed for certain--and most assuredly untrue--reasons. Before the shirt could even hit the floor, L had the cuff securely back on his wrist.
"Is that so?" he asked, thumb dangling on his lip as he stared at Light with burning black eyes. Because of the new lead and confession of Higuchi, they had returned to their earlier setup of suspect and detective, but had they ever not acted as such? Of course, now with the new developments, L was positive that Light knew something he wasn't letting on, and it wasn't true. He kept snapping questions at him such as why he couldn't remember certain events--
"Probably because I've been having to prove my innocence time and again for months now! I don't have photographic memory like you do. If it is insignificant to me, I'll forget it."
To why he confessed in the first place--
"Because of all your vituperation! Your accusations and mental abuse was making me insane. It's no wonder I gave you a false confession. For the last time, I'm not Kira!"
Yet, even after he gave L all he knew, after going over every one of L's theories with him, Light was still defending himself every second. L's eyes were constantly on him, or on the computer screen, or a piece of cake. But what made it worse (aside from being annoying, redundant, and resulting in migraines) was that Light was starting to doubt himself. It had crossed his mind several times, and he knew L was aware of it. Why could he not account for certain events clearly? Why could Misa not even remember why she liked him in the first place? He was starting to wonder things, meaningless and untrue things.
Could he have been Kira?
L's theories all seemed concrete, even to him. He acknowledged that he fit the profile just right, but, as he pointed out on several occasions, so did someone like L. He knew there had to be other people out there that also fit the profile they had constructed of Kira. He did hate how the world had turned out to be, how evil was more looked upon than goodness. That did not make him a misanthrope. He wanted to help the world, as little as he could, but could he actually kill another human being? Even with powers like Kira's, could he be okay knowing his hands were covered in blood? Kira's intentions seemed good and unselfish--clear the wicked, protect the innocent, save the world-- but Light knew he was far from being an altruist. He killed innocent people like Raye Penbar. Light remembered meeting him on the bus, but it was also their last meeting. L probed him on this subject, too, but Light could not give a good explanation of why the hijacker suddenly went mad. Yes, he remembered Naomi Misora, Penbar's fiance, but he could not account for why she suddenly disappeared. He could not even clearly recollect his memories of their conversation.
Was it just a coincidence?
His mind was going in a constant loop. When L was not accusing him, questioning him, or interrogating him, Light was doing it to himself. He was starting to lay awake in bed for hours, just thinking. He was even starting to doubt himself of his own innocence. What if he had been Kira? What happened? Could he return to being Kira? Coffee was starting to become his way of functioning. He and L had seemed to switch habits along the way; now L could fall asleep at any given time because of his pregnancy where Light could get only a couple of hours, and his coffee intake could rival L's sweet tooth.
"Light-kun."
The said brunet turned his head to look upon the pregnant detective who was sitting on the stool beside him. They were in a Japanese-style bath today. His fingers were working their way in his hair, lathering it with shampoo.
"A penny for your thoughts?"
Light squirted some of the shampoo in his palm and coated his hair with it. "I was just thinking of Higuchi," he lied, "We're going to catch him tomorrow. That means that everything will be decided tomorrow. We'll know all we need to know."
"Light-kun is scared that when we capture Higuchi, he will return to be Kira," L stated so candidly.
"I'm not going to become Kira, nor have I ever been Kira," Light said for the umpteenth time, "It's just jitters, is all. We have to be very careful to catch Higuchi. Anything can go wrong. Even Matsuda knows he could be killed, but he undertook the task anyway."
He knew L's eyes were boring into him, they way they always did. Always calculating and turning everything he said around in that noggin.
"Can I say something?" Light asked.
"Go ahead."
"We have both come to the conclusion that Higuchi is not the original Kira. That means that the original Kira is out there, but why is he not acting? I know you're thinking 'because he's currently chained to me', but please hear me out." L did not say anything, which gave Light the opt to continue, "If we capture Higuchi and his powers are transferred to someone else whether by his own making or by another entity, it will be a long continuous cycle. How do we know we're not simply being played like puppets along the way?"
He didn't look at L, just the tile wall. But he was curious to hear what the detective had to say.
"Kira is the type of person to step-aside only when he is close to being cornered," L began, chewing listlessly on his thumb, "He likes things done his way, and he wants to be the one to do it. To him, his puppets, such as Higuchi, are merely that. If and when Higuchi's arrest is known, he will likely kill him. The more people he traps, the more he knows his trail is deepening. All the strings of the puppet are connected to the puppeteer. We follow the strings, we find Kira."
It made sense. It made perfect sense. Kira was that kind of person, because Light was that kind of person.
Light took the bottle of strawberry shower gel and spread some into his hand. "Here, let me wash your back for you," he said to L. A little unsure at first, L stood up to let him do so and remained still while Light rubbed gently over his shoulders and back, avoiding going lower that his hips. He was taken by surprise when he felt Light's arms reach around his front and pull him close.
"Light..."
"Shhh... Ryuuzaki, just let me hold you," he said, resting his chin on L's shoulder. His hands roamed over L's stomach which still didn't look very big at the moment. The ravenhead's eyes drooped a little, and before he let himself get carried away, he turned off the shower and said it was time to sleep. L seemed to fall asleep almost instantly, but it took Light a couple of hours before he felt tired at all. In the meantime, he watched L sleep beside him, looking so peaceful, while he pondered on thoughts of Kira.
In the middle of the night, L awoke to a strange sensation. He slowly brought himself to the sitting position and looked at Light. The brunet teenager was sleeping on his back, snoring lightly with his head facing toward him. His eyes were knitted close and chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm and lips parted. It was easier with Light sleeping on his back.
He lifted the covers slowly as to not wake up the brunet yet. He reached underneath and touched the inside of Light's thigh. The boy did not stir. He slowly moved upwards and cupped his crotch, feeling his member underneath the fabric. He stirred, but L continued to move his hand. Chestnut coloured eyes slowly blinked open.
"Ryuuzaki?" he asked in a groggy voice as he blinked at the man who was fondling him, "...What are you doing?"
"Shh." L pressed his finger to his lips. His hand dipped underneath Light's pyjama bottoms and touched the curly hairs on his pubic bone. Light grabbed his arm, making him stop.
"Ryuuzaki," he said again, now more awake.
"It's okay, Light-kun," L said. He pulled down the pants to his knee and stroked Light's member. The brunet mewled as long, spidery fingers brought his member to life. It slowly became rigid in L's hand and he continued to stroke and stroke and stroke...
"R-Ryuuzaki..." Light mumbled, "Why...?"
"Because I want to," L said in a nonchalant manner, "And it may be our last night to do so." He removed his pants and sat down on Light's thighs and reached over to the nightstand on the other side and opened the drawer. Light knew what he was retrieving. L showed two lubricated condoms. He ripped one open with his teeth and pulled it out of its wrapping and slipped it down Light's cock. The next he ripped open and placed it over his own member and rolled it down to the base.
"Two?" Light asked.
"This one is for clean-up," L answered. He raised himself on his knees and held his member at his entrance. Slowly he slipped down over it, releasing a sigh as he did so.
"...hah..." Light breathed as he felt L's rectal muscles clench his cock. It had been a long time since he remembered what it felt like inside him. It was good, just like before. Warm, tight, and slick. L leaned back on one hand and lifted and lowered himself on Light's erection. He sighed and made small noises as he did so. Wet slick noises like squishing fruit emitted between them. Light began to follow after L and move his hips to catch him. The hand not holding the ravenhead upright was wrapped around his member, and he began to stroke himself, condom and all, the same way he had done to Light previously.
The brunet bent his legs so L could put his hands on his knees and be more comfortable. Up and down, L moved on Light's shaft while he touched himself. Light gripped the pregnant man's hip with one hand and placed his other hand over L's hand on his member and followed him in pumping.
"Ah," L closed his eyes. If there was light in the room, he may have seen his cheeks were blushing like he remembered them. Both panted and gasped and sighed in pleasure. Even the chain felt warm from their combined body heat.
"Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh." L chanted as his rectal muscles gripped Light's cock tightly.
'Oh God,' Light thought inside his noggin, 'So good...so good...'
"Mmm! Light-kun!" L gasped. Light closed his eyes and felt his juice spew into the condom inside L. His hips jerked upward. He heard his lover suck in a sharp intake of breath and shivered. He knew he had cum and the condom must have worked because he didn't feel anything on his chest. He opened his eyes and saw L only inches away from his chest and breathing hard, almost hyperventilating. With a slick sound, he pulled off the soiled condom and held it between his thumb and pointer finger. Then he pulled himself off Light and slumped next to him, both still panting heavily. He removed Light's condom for him and tossed the two used condoms in the garbage bin on L's side of the bed; the bin had been placed there so L could throw away the wrappers of his midnight cravings.
"...L," Light said timidly.
"Hm?"
"Is it okay...if I hold you again?"
"Yes, it's fine."
Light wrapped one arm around L torso and brought him closer, nuzzling his nose into the raven locks. These moments between them were rare. They may just become much rarer after today.
______________________________________________________________
The next day seemed to flow like a movie. Everyone knew their spots, their jobs, and their lines. Today was the day. Light called Namigawa and informed him about their plan. Namigawa agreed to do so as long as the other seven were seen as victims; they agreed. From there it all flowed like a production film. Everything they said would happen, did happen, almost as if Higuchi was following a script handed to him. First Namigawa called him to watch SakuraTV. After watching discovering Matsuda, he called Misa's cell phone. They did not answer. After several minutes, he called Mogi where he was told Misa was on holiday.
"It's almost scary how predictable this all was," Light commented.
"Let's be happy and not scared," L said.
Wedy took chase when Higuchi took off in his car. Light and Ryuuzaki watched closely on the GPS system they placed in all of Higuchi's cars. Light took a glance at L. He was sitting back to his normal perch, though he wondered if it caused him discomfort. His large, dark eyes were staring at the double screen monitors unblinkingly. His finger barely touched his bottom lip. He wondered if his adrenaline was pumping as much as Light's? Was his heart racing, too?
Both perked up when he mentioned the name Rem.
"Who is Rem?" Light asked aloud.
"There's no one else in the car," L stated, voice still monotonous, "He entered the car by himself and there are no radios in his car from Wedy's report."
"Then who could he be talking to?"
L peeled a banana, one of many; perhaps his body was low on potassium? "If he is in a conversation and not talking to himself, then the person he must be talking to is the Shinigami."
The blood flowing in his veins was sounding like a rushing river in his ears. He could feel the muscle pump hard against his sternum. Higuchi went to Misa's talent company where the cameras they had bugged followed his every move. Wedy did a good job. They didn't talk. All tension in the air. Just as they had previously predicted, he searched for Matsuda's file. Of course, it was a fake, but he did not know it.
'Show us how you kill.'
He took out a black notebook from his satchel and wrote down the name in the file. Then he walked back to his car and waited, watching the television monitor he had fixed in his car. His outburst made Light jump ("Why isn't he dead yet?!"), but L remained completely stoic as he watched the screen with all seriousness. The questions hung in the air between them; what did he mean by that? What's his method of killing? He took off again and kept talking to "Rem". He spoke about a deal, but no one was sure what he meant. Light swallowed. A police officer pulled Higuchi over for speeding, which was not as planned. Higuchi took off and the officer gave chase.
The officer crashed into a lorry. It was obviously fatal.
"What the hell?" Light mumbled in horror.
L pressed the button on the microphone connecting him to everyone else. "I have now decided it is time to move in on Higuchi and capture him even though we have not yet discovered his method of killing. However, please proceed cautiously as we are assuming he now has the ability to kill with just a face as the second Kira."
Blockbuster could not have made a better film, if this was a movie.
"We'll also be making our moves," L said, standing up from the chair, "Please follow me, Light-kun." He looked at Misa. "I hope you don't mind but I will have to keep you immobilised here." After chaining her to the chair, Light followed behind Ryuuzaki up the staircase.
They walked along the roof to where a black helicopter stood ready. They didn't have much time as the team on the ground was already advancing in on Higuchi's position. It never seemed to amaze Light the resources L had available at their disposal when it came to fighting Kira; it seemed he had pulled out all the stocks on this case.
"Wait, Ryuuzaki," Light said as L reached up to climb into the cockpit, "You're not actually going to fly that thing are you?"
"Why wouldn't I?"
"Well you can't, it's dangerous and you're pregnant."
"I'm glad Light-kun is concerned about me, but his concern is unnecessary. The glass of the helicopter is bulletproof. Besides, there are pregnant women who drive cars all the time."
"This isn't a car! This is a helicopter! Pregnant women don't fly these!"
"There are more accidents in cars than helicopters. Perhaps they should begin driving these instead."
Light was still sceptical but time was not of the essence, and he didn't feel like arguing with L at this precise moment. He just wanted Higuchi to be caught so he could prove he wasn't Kira. Although he wasn't quite sure if it would all be over once they caught Higuchi. If L's theory was correct, and Higuchi was not the original Kira, then Light might one day become Kira again... No, he was never Kira in the first place. He was sure of that. With determination, Light climbed into the passenger seat after L.
"There is one thing though, Light-kun," L said as he faced toward him. He wrapped his arms around Light's neck and brought their mouths closer, their lips touched and then connected. Light didn't pull away; he let L kiss him as he needed to be kissed. He felt L's tongue in his mouth and gently lapped at it, uttering a little moan of pleasure. A trail of saliva ran down the corner of his lips when they pulled apart.
"It might be our last," L replied. Light did not comment. He did not want to think of the possibilities that could go wrong. Instead, he wanted to focus on now. Nothing bad was going to happen. They would capture Higuchi and find out how he killed. Still, he could not shake the feeling of uncertainty as Watari climbed into the back of the helicopter and they took off.
Though he doubted L flew a helicopter often, as he never drove a car, he handled it quite well. What other tricks and skills did Ryuuzaki have under those quarter-link sleeves? The sound of the blades chopping through the night air was still heard even through their large headsets. Once again, Higuchi returned to Yotsuba to see the security tapes, but they had been disposed of. L gave off more instructions to block traffic so there would be no more accidents.
Then things were starting to come to an end; Higuchi was on his way to SakuraTV station.
He arrived to kill Matsuda but only discovered they were dummies, and he was surrounded by Soichirou, Wedy, Mogi, and Aiber, all wearing helmets to hide their identity. From their headsets, L and Light heard the conversation between them and Higuchi. Then gunshots.
"The chief got shot!" Mogi cried out, "Higuchi had a gun on him and got out. The chief's injured."
Light gasped and listened in horror. His dad...
"I'm okay, it's just a scratch." A sigh of relief.
"Higuchi is out of the station," Light stated to L, in a calm manner.
L's voice remained stoic and calm. Was his heart even beating as fast as Light's was? "Then we will have to make our own move," he said, "Are we all set, Watari?"
"Yes Ryuuzaki." Behind Light, Watari was setting up a sniper rifle.
The others pursued him by car while Ryuuzaki and Light took the sky. Higuchi was ahead and seemed to be able to get a good distance from them, but the bugs in his car would allow them to know exactly where he was. Fortunately, that would not be necessary. Higuchi was stopped by a brigade of police cars with frosted windows. It was led by Aizawa and Ide who had left the Kira Investigation. They had him surrounded at all sides. Watari leaned out of the helicopter with the sniper rifle and took out two of his tires, causing him to spin out of control and into the wall. Cornered.
'This is it,' Light thought to himself, 'This is the end. It's finally ending.' The adrenaline and blood pumping through his veins seemed enough to give him a stroke.
BANG! Watari's sniper shot took out Higuchi's gun that he held to his own head. It was over.
"This is it," Light said, surprising himself by how steady his voice was.
"Yes, this is the end."
Higuchi was arrested and tape was set over his eyes. A headset was also put on him so he could speak with Ryuuzaki and Light. They demanded they tell him what his method of killing was, which he answered was a notebook. Soichirou searched inside and indeed find a black notebook that seemed to have no special qualities.
Until he screamed about a monster.
Mogi touched it and also screamed about a monster. It appeared that only they could see what this thing was.
"Bring the notebook to me!" L demanded.
Mogi brought the notebook over, and L took in in his fingers, holding the same way he did everything else. He looked up, and Light noticed his eyes grow double. He did not scream like the others, but it was clear that he was staring in fear and disbelief and shock.
"...Shini...gami..." he whispered.
Light grabbed the notebook from him.
And screamed.
An electric current ran up his arms and slammed against the sides of his cranium. A swirl of white light turned him blind, and his body locked in the same position, but his vocal cords continued to vibrate and release his strangled cry. Something was digging into his head: realisation! Memories! Answers! The truth!
Then it was cut off. All the electricity flowing through him suddenly felt like it was sucked right back out of him, like a piece of rubber blocking the current. The blinding light dissipated and his eyesight returned. He was back in the helicopter. Everything was the same, but he could not account what happened during that electric shock that rocked his body. He just knew that when he looked out, he saw a spiny creature that had not been there before.
"Sh-Shinigami," he stuttered. He looked over at L who was staring at him with rather large eyes. "What?"
L had the notebook again, and he was clutching it with both hands, using all fingers as if it would jump out. He didn't answer Light right away, but prompted to keep staring at him as if he were the Shinigami.
"What?!" Light snapped again. He looked and saw that Watari was also staring at him with cold eyes behind his spectacles.
"It would be best, Light-kun," L said, voice calm but eyes still locked on him like he was a feral beast, "If I held onto this. Remember, you are still a suspect of being the original Kira."
Light didn't say anything, but he wanted to. That shock... Did the others experience at the force he did? And why was L staring at him so defensively as if he would jump up and attack him.
More importantly, when he touched the notebook, why did he feel a sudden, deep loathing and hatred for L?
