The truth

Part 12

Year 2716½.

“And then, and then! - And then Alfred says: “I am not Alfred, I am Matthew!””

Kirkland shattered the glass as he hammered it down onto the deck. He threw his head back as he was shaking with laughter, tears coming to his eyes.

“No! No! Oh my, that poor boy!” he cried, “no way I am going to be the father of such a wussy!”

“I’m afraid you are!” Arthur smiled brightly, leaning back against the ship’s mast. Kirkland was shaking his head, eyes swimming around on the sky, wondering out loud:

“Matthew and Alfred, hah? Sounds like a tough job.” Arthur shrugged the shoulders.

“Yeah, but you’ll be surprised - in the end it’s all worth it.”

“Really?”

“Well..” Arthur licked his lips with the tongue as he started pondering. “Well.. I guess.. That’s what I always say.” Kirkland wrinkle the brows, his laughter slowly dying out. He leaned forward while trying to catch Arthur’s gaze with his.

“One thing is what ya say. It’s a whole other deal when we’re speaking about what we actually feel.” Arthur looked into the other’s eyes. Kirkland’s lips shook, then they bend upwards, and he smiled brightly as he said: “Sometimes I say I love women, but all I love about them is their body.” Arthur scratched the back of his neck with a groan.

“If you said that in my time, the society would hate you.”

“Fucking future.”

“You bet.” Arthur rolled his eyes. “Hand over the bottle.” Kirkland pressed the bottle of alcohol to Arthur’s chest. He chuckled, grabbed it and took a mouthful of the lovely liquid. ‘Lovely, wonderful, sexy, charming liquid, alcohol, make me dizzy, please.’

“So now - you’re in the past, you’re with me, you’re allowed to speak right from your heart or whatever. Tell me - how was it to raise those boys?”

Arthur swung with the bottle, taking in air before answering:

“Horrible.” Kirkland moved to sit beside Arthur. “Horrible, really.” He looked at Kirkland with a sad smile. “You’re not to say such things about your children, not even in your time, I know. But it…” He looked down. Kirkland groaned as if to assure the other that it would be okay of him to continue. Arthur let go of a sigh and hid his eyes behind the left arm.” But it’s never as easy as people make it look like, you know? I really, really tried to make things work. With Francis and such, but… They grow up, they separate from you.”

“They separated from you?”

“Well, Matthew wasn’t really mine as much as he was Francis’. But Alfred! Alfred grew up, he wanted something new.” Arthur went quiet. Kirkland narrowed his eyes. He wasn’t sure what questions to ask. Which questions did he long to get an answer on? He had never really thought about the future, you can’t afford to do that if you’re to be an excellent pirate. Pirates have to be daring, not saving their strength for the old age. But here he was with his older self, and somehow he felt ungrateful for not knowing what to speak with this man about. Luckily, Arthur had more than enough to tell, and before Kirkland even had the change to form an excuse for his quietness, Arthur had turned to face him, smiling secretly as if he was about to do something nasty.

“…what?”

“I have a secret.”

“Well, good for you?”

“Yeah, well, it’s a secret that no one knows of. It had fooled the whole world.” Arthur turned to look at the sky, but it was easily to tell that he was watching Kirkland from the corner of his eyes. He was smiling slightly, waiting for Kirkland to ask, and so he did:

“What kind of secret?”

“Oh, since you so want to know!” Arthur started out, clapping together his hands. “I’d decided never to tell anyone, but we are the same, you know, so I guess it’s okay.” Arthur winked at Kirkland, whispering: “Come, lean in.”

Kirkland hesitated. He threw a securing look around the empty deck, before he leaned his ear in close to Arthur’s lips. The man let go of a low chuckle, before whispering:

“The whole world believes Alfred fought to be separated from me, but he actually fought to stay with me. Alfred never wanted to leave me. He wanted to become one with me, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t do it.”

“Why not?” Kirkland whispered.

“Because I wasn’t in love with him. He didn’t wanted me as a father, he wanted me to stay with him as his man, his lover.”

“He’s gay?”

“Well, big surprise, but in a century, so will you be.” Kirkland shook his head.

“Gross.”

“Shut up, I’m not finished.” Arthur once again wetted his lips. His brain had started to spin from all the alcohol he had consumed, but somehow he felt better than ever. “I umm.. I told him I was in love with Francis, and Alfred became so mad he could hardly look at me. Then I started his revolution for him, and as it was as its peaking point, he decided to help his nation win. Because he was so jealous and just wanted to see me break down. I acted like I did, pointing my gun at him, then “decided” not to shoot. But you know what?” Arthur’s smile widened. “There was never a single bullet in that gun.”
