Chapter 14

Watching Kedri battle didn’t turn out to be as exciting as Wally thought. It wasn’t the fault of the Gym Leader, but rather the inexperienced trainers that challenged him. He couldn’t help but roll his eyes at one girl that ran out crying that she was going to tell her daddy because Kedri didn’t let her win. Stupid, really.

He turned his attention to Nimh to find the older trainer reading through a book of Legendary Pokémon. Apparently he knew what to expect and came prepared.

After Kedri finished another battle he declared it break time and flipped over the sign on the Gym doors. He smiled to himself, remembering silly comments other challengers had made on the sign in their amusement, and called up to the two on the balcony. “You can come down if you want, I’m taking a break.”

“Gotcha!” Nimh called back and slipped the book back into his bag to wake Wally up. The boy had dozed off just a few minutes before, bored out of his mind. “Wake up Wally, Kedri says we can come down now.”

“Mm?” Wally blinked and rubbed his eyes, yawning. He stood up and followed Nimh back down the stairs. “What are we gonna do now?”

“You two can do whatever you like.” Kedri answered. “I’m going to make some tea.”

Just as he started walking to the back room, the front doors slammed open, almost hard enough to make the glass shatter. The three turned to face the intruder, Kedri looking beyond exasperated.

“Can you not read?” he snapped, glaring at the redhead male across the room. “My Gym is closed, it’s time for my break.”

“Trainers can challenge a Gym Leader at any time as long as that leader is in their Gym.” The intruder snarked back.

Kedri muttered something like “obstinate asshole” under his breath and glared all hell at his life-long rival.

“Unless you’re too weak to face me like a man.”

“You always did pick the most inconvenient times to show up.”

“At least I didn’t go and get my leg chopped off.”

Nimh glared as his friend turned red in the face, almost matching the jerk’s hair color. Kedri fumed silently, too furious to formulate a response. Wally, however, kept a calm exterior and moved forward to challenge the stranger.

“If all you’ve come here for is to fling insults at a Gym Leader, then you can just turn around and direct yourself out.” He said, his tone calm yet dangerous. “If you’ve come for a fight, then you can take it up with me. But if you lose, you don’t ever show your face here again.”

Kedri blinked; he didn’t think Wally had it in him to be so intimidating. But Nimh simply grinned as the redhead foolishly accepted the challenge.

“This is gonna be good.”
