Chapter 14
‘confrontation’
The door slammed shut with a note of finality behind him, but this time Touya didn’t jump. He’d known, intellectually, that he would face Yue again and told himself he was ready for it, ready for anything as long as it would get his sister back. But he hadn’t counted on the effect just seeing the king would have. Yue stood before him, glowing softly against the darkness, and instantly the memories rushed back.
kissing passionately, desperately, naked bodies entwined on the satin sheets
His body flushed with an unexpected heat and Touya clenched his fists, sucking in his breath and letting it out slowly, willing away the treacherous sensations. It was obvious from Yue’s thin smile that he knew exactly what Touya was thinking about.
“Your time is very nearly up, Toya, you cannot win. Give yourself up now, and I promise to return her to her home.”
Panic seized him and he almost complied, ready to cut his losses and at least get Sakura safely home. Then his thoughts collected and he shook his head.
“You wouldn’t say that if I really didn’t have a chance. I’m not giving up.”
Yue shrugged minutely. “As you wish.”
A taunting reminder of the last bad decision he’d made? Touya couldn’t be sure, and then Yue was gone. No lights snapped on, but now he could see the rest of the room where before he could not, and he had to swallow a groan.
It was a maze, of course, but not just any maze. The cavernous hall had been transformed into a logic-defying labyrinth that spanned not just the floor but the walls and ceiling too, implausible stairways running sideways and upside down and disappearing into opaque archways, paths bending and twisting in a manner that hurt the brain. Floating in the exact center of it all was that damn clock, every loud tick adding to the urgency.
Just fifteen minutes left.
And there, idly wandering along a pathway opposite him and humming tunelessly, was Sakura.
“Sakura!” he shouted, almost tearing up in relief now that he could see her, in spite of the gulf that still divided them. She was so close! She looked up at his cry and blinked, puzzled surprise all over her face.
“Onii-chan? What are you doing here?”
“What am I… I’m here to get you! I’ve come to take you back home!” He ran along the edge of a platform to get closer, but this path ended with no offshoots to go any further. Frustrated, he took a step back from the sheer drop-off and wondered how he would get closer.
“You came to find me?” Sakura echoed, brightening. Then her expression hardened and she took a step back. “But Yue said that you asked him to take me away.”
“Uh…” Damn it. He swallowed and looked away, ignoring Yue’s malicious smirk. “Can we talk about it later? We don’t have much time, Sakura.” He traced his steps back along the platform and turned onto the first set of stairs.
“No!” she said petulantly, and stamped a foot. “Now! Did you ask him to bring me here?”
“Sakura, I’m sorry, it was an accident -”
“You did! You did ask him, you wanted to get rid of me!” The betrayed and hurt look in her eyes made him want to die, and he cringed.
“Sakura, I didn’t mean -”
“You’re so cruel! How could you?” With an angry sob she whirled around and ran, and panic bubbled up inside Touya again.
“Wait, Sakura, don’t move -” Too late. She disappeared into a black tunnel and then reappeared even further away from him than she’d been before. “Sakura!”
“Go away!”
It would seem she is not exactly willing to be rescued, Yue observed smugly, his words echoing telepathically in Touya’s mind. How ironic.
“Shut up,” Touya snapped. Now she was standing sideways on a small platform, but didn’t seem to be aware of it as she directed a baleful glare in his direction. “Sakura, please, I’m sorry!”
“You don’t care about me at all!”
“That’s not true!” He was torn between concentrating on her and picking his way through the maze, but the ticking clock could not be ignored. She never even glanced at it, and he wondered if she could hear it. “I care a lot, I came here to get you back! Do you have any idea what I’ve been through tonight to find you?”
“I don’t care,” she answered haughtily. “I’m going to stay here.”
Touya froze mid-step, blood pounding in his ears. Surely he’d misheard that! “What?”
“I like it here, it’s fun. There’s music and tasty sweets and I can have anything I want. Yue said so. He gave me this dress.” She twirled to show it off, paying no attention to the numb horror on Touya’s face. Picturing her as a prisoner in the castle, he’d had the vague image of her locked in a cage, tied up and abused. The thought had nauseated him and he’d tried not to dwell on it too much, but this… this was so much worse.
“What the- no! You can’t stay here, Sakura, what are you thinking? I came to get you, you have to come home with me!” He squinted more carefully. “Are you wearing makeup?”
“Stop it! You’re always telling me what to do, I hate that!” She stamped her slippered foot on the stone floor.
Tick tock, tick tock.
“Damn it, Sakura, we do not have time for this!” Anxiously he tried to wend his way through the maze but she only retreated again when he moved closer. “Stop moving around!”
“I told you, I want to stay here. Yue said I could. He asked me to be his princess!”
That caught him like a solid punch in the stomach and he braced a hand against the nearest wall to steady himself. “He- he what?”
Somehow, she skipped easily to the platform where Yue stood waiting and greeted him with an adoring smile. Touya was the only one she’d ever smiled like that for. With sick dismay he watched Yue pat Sakura lightly on the head, stroking her hair.
“What are you- stop that! Get your hands off her!”
I see no reason to, the king replied. It seems I’m no longer obligated to give her to the little wolf now. She is pretty. Perhaps if you will not come to my bed, she will.
“NO!” Touya slammed his fist against the stone wall in frustrated desperation. “Sakura, get away from him! Now!”
“Why should I? Yue is very nice to me, not like you!”
It certainly wasn’t difficult to sway her, Yue pointed out.
“You son of a bitch,” Touya swore, not caring if Sakura heard or not. “Sakura is my sister. You can’t take her away from me like this, I won’t let you!”
Sakura blinked, confused. “Nii-chan?”
“Sakura,” he choked, “please. You can’t stay here and be princess, you can’t just leave me and Dad like that.”
Something like hesitation crossed her face. “Tou-san?”
“Yes, Otou-san! He loves you, think how sad he would be if you never came home.” Doubt filtered into her expression and she took a step forward, out from under Yue’s caresses. The king made no move to stop her, watching silently.
“I would be sad,” Touya continued, pressing his cause. “I’m your big brother, and I would miss you so much. You can’t leave me for Yue, you can’t leave me all alone. You’re all I’ve got. Please…” His voice nearly cracked under the strain, emotions were threatening to snap. “I love you.”
Wretchedly he watched a pair of tears roll down her cheeks, not even aware of his own tears.
“Onii-chan,” she cried, “I wanna go home!”
Relief swamped him and he almost broke down, but there wasn’t enough time for that. He sniffled and wiped his face with his sleeve. “So do I. Come on, let’s get out of this place.”
She nodded tearfully and broke into a run again, this time intent on finding a path toward him. Dimly Touya noticed that Yue was gone again, but he couldn’t take the time to worry. Just a few minutes left.
“Onii-chan, how do I get to you? I don’t know the right way!”
“It’s okay, don’t panic. See that stairway on your left? Go down it.”
“Okay.” Anxiously she followed his instructions while he hurried along the path under his feet, frantically searching for some way to get closer. It turned a sharp right and into a yawning black tunnel, but he instinctively backed away from letting Sakura out of his sight. Instead he retraced his steps and took another turn.
“Onii-chan, you’re going farther away!”
“It’ll be all right. Keep moving on that walkway, and make sure you can still see me.” But these stairs were taking him up and not down, the way he wanted to go. Helplessly he watched Sakura scurry closer, almost directly beneath him. There just wasn’t enough time! He could have solved this maze if he’d had more time!
“Onii-chan, I can’t go this way anymore.” She indicated the tunnel in front of her and turned her face up. “I won’t be able to see you.”
Tick tock, tick tock.
“I know. Don’t move.” Just one minute left. He knelt on the edge of his platform, mentally trying to calculate the distance.
Never judge distance in the labyrinth with your eyes.
Sorry Li, but he had no choice. Sakura frowned a little and took a step back. “Nii-chan, what are you doing?”
“I’m coming down to get you.”
“You can’t! It’s too far to jump.”
“You let me worry about that.” The seconds were ticking past. It was now or never, and with a brief prayer he shut his eyes and jumped.
