Make you understand

Part 13

Year 2009.

“No bullets? You’ve got to be joking.”

Jones smiled unaffected of Alfred’s stunned face. He lifted the mug of hot coffee to the lips, whispered: “I’m no comedian, dear,” before he took a sip of the liquid.

Night. Candles were the only source of light in the room. Jones had suggested that they took use of the fireplace, but Alfred had turned the request down - he didn’t feel like creating a cosy atmosphere for some stranger. Or himself. Or whatever.

“Arthur would never do such a thing. He loves me.”

“Oh, is that so?” Jones blinked with heavy eyelashes, and a smile filled with sorrow took over his thin lips. “I am afraid you’re fooling your romantic heart.”

“I’ve got no romantic heart.”

“Yeah, Hollywood totally confirms that.”

Alfred gritted the teeth together and pushed himself up from the chair. He leaned across the table to look into Jones’ eyes. “Are you here to make a fool of me, or do you actually have a purpose with your visit?” Jones put down the mug and made a waving gesture with the right hand to make Alfred step back.

“Calm down, it’s not like I enjoy being thrown through time,” he sneered, getting up himself. “That’s actually my purpose - to stop this madness. That dumb Englishman always mess up my plans!” Alfred straightened up as he raised the eyebrows, clearly not getting the picture.

“He messes up your plans?”

“That’s your plans too.”

“I’ve got no plans!”

“Sure you do!” Jones stepped free of the table, strolling around the room with furious steps. “Are you really too blind to notice? Every time you suggest something should be done, he disagrees with you!”

“Well, mostly my plans do kind of suck.”

“Do they - or does he makes them look stupid?” Jones turned to face Alfred. Alfred hesitated. He wanted to give an answer, but the way Jones asked the question actually made him give it a second thought.

“Well..” he started out, but never came further. Jones grunted, crossing the arms with an arrogant look in the eyes.

“You haven’t even thought about that one?” He raised an eyebrow, shaking the head slowly from side to side, his gaze never leaving Alfred. “Stupid, stupid kid.”

“Apparently not too stupid if I’ve taken over the world in the future,” Alfred mumbled, narrowing his gaze as he imitated Jones’ crossed arms. Jones let go of a short laughter.

“That’s only thanks to me coming to the past!”

“What do you mean?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” Jones laughed again and stumbled backwards to take a seat in the sofa. He rested the hands in the lap while smiling at Alfred through the dim light. “It’s not the first time I’ve been thrown back here. Time goes in circles. Things happen all over again. You keep rambling your heart out, Arthur keeps screwing up - and it’s all making the future chaotic. I want to settle things for good this time.”

Alfred listened, but it was with worry in his eyes, and he felt he shouldn’t ask the question, he - however - couldn’t help but ask. “How? How are you going to settle things?”

“I’m here to kill Arthur.” Alfred’s lips curved up into a sick smile.

“Wh-what?”

“I’m here to kill Arthur,” Jones repeated, his voice steady and face completely serious. Alfred smiled brightly, but it was the smile of denial, and he shook his head.

“That’s insane. That’s a joke.”

“I already told you that I am no comedian.”

“You can’t kill Arthur!”

“But he’s allowed to kill me?!” Jones got up, went straight for Alfred. His hands closed around his neck, and Alfred’s fingers locked themselves around Jones’ in order to push him away. But he couldn’t. Jones’ eyes were starring into his own with hurt and anger. “He’s killing me, he’s killing you!” he hissed, “and he always has!”

Alfred blinked with the eyes. The lack of air to his lungs were quickly making him dizzy, and he already found it hard to focus on the face in front of him. “What.. Mean..?”

“What I mean?” Jones’ lips twitched. “First he treats us like simple colonies, then he makes up the whole show with the unloaded gun, and then he keeps flirting with us, but still turns us down on whatever occasion, - and this mess. This playing with the timeline. It fucks up my world!” Alfred’s eyes rolled backwards as Jones’ grip tightened. Jones loosened his grasp a little, allowing his younger self to gasp in air. Then he let go completely, Alred’s body plunging to the floor. He frowned.

“Alfred,” Jones mumbled, “you’re weak. I am weaker in the future because of your love now. I am not the bad guy in this tragically show - I am the victim. You are the victim. In the future.” He slipped the hands into the pockets of the jacket, closing his eyes with a heavy sigh. “If you don’t understand now,” he whispered, “I’ll have to make you understand.”
