CHAPTER 14
The room was dark, save for the dozens of computer monitors mounted on the walls and desks. Mizuki sat with his knees pulled up to his chest, blue tinted glasses pushed low on his nose. His cell phone sat within reach, dark eyes darting to it every few seconds. Tezuka gave him strict orders to find out about this Arai person, above everything else, and that included the Hunters getting attacked. This was their only lead so far, and he was the only one who could do anything.
He wiped at his eyes and continued scanning his computers. He had started life as a hacker who had wandered too far into the system. Tezuka had offered him an out, work for him or be locked up. It was a no brainer.
He didn’t expect to get attached to his team; they were just people for him to play with, to use as he saw fit. He didn’t expect to need Akazawa’s strength, to be drawn to Atsushi’s quiet words, to laugh with Yanagisawa, or to be drawn inexplicably to Yuuta’s gentle smile.
And now those members were in danger and he couldn’t help. He hoped someone would phone and tell him everyone was alright. He was too afraid to phone himself, just incase someone else answered the phone.
His computer ran a facial recognition program on the cities cameras, scanning through the people who passed on the sidewalks and public buildings. No one matched. This guy couldn’t have just disappeared; there were enough cameras, he would show up somewhere.
The computer at the far corner of the wall showed the camera angles around Arai’s apartment building, but for the past little while no one with his description had gone in or out.
Mizuki considered flipping to the cameras by the Organization, but he was afraid to. The back door he had secretly created into Tezuka’s system was tempting him, he could quickly slip in, read a few reports to see if his team made it, and slip back out without Tezuka ever realizing he was there. He was a world-class hacker after all. His hand hovered over the mouse …he couldn’t do it.
The monitor in the far corner beeped and Mizuki nearly fell from his chair. He clicked a few times and flipped the views, sending the shots on his screen to the far corner and the view around Arai’s apartment to the screen before him. In the back of the building three hooded figures dragged a person with a sack over his head into the building. Mizuki tilted his head; that was odd? He tapped a few keys and hacked into the cameras inside the building. No one was in the lobby as they dragged the person into the elevator. With a curse Mizuki propped himself on the balls of his feet and switched camera angles. In the elevator the three pulled their hoods down and Mizuki had the quick sense to take snap shots of them all. They pulled the hood off the fourth figure and Mizuki swore in shock and scrambled for his phone.
Tezuka’s phone rang just as Sanada came jogging up behind him. He waved apologetically at the Vampire and answered his phone.
“Tezuka-“ before he could say anything else Mizuki started yelling into his ear.
“They’re at his apartment! They brought him in gagged and tied up and now they’re on their way up in the elevator!”
Tezuka waved Sanada off again when the Vampire held a phone in his vision and spoke slowly into his phone, “who do they have gagged and bound, Mizuki?”
Mizuki sighed dramatically, “that idiot you’ve had me looking for, Arai!!”
Tezuka opened his mouth to respond just as Sanada shoved the cell phone under his nose. “Mizuki I- they’re burning us …WHAT!?”
The phone crackled as Mizuki jumped in shock, “they’re what?” Panic flared through his voice.
“No, not us! Shit, call Yuuta. Thanks for the information Mizuki!” He hung up the phone and spun on Sanada, “what the hell is this?”
Hunters started gathering around the broken windows, peering around the wooden boards. Quiet murmurs turned into worried rumbles and suddenly one shouted, “fire all over town!”
Tezuka ran to the window, squeezing shoulder to shoulder with his Hunters. All across town fires had sprouted up, burning masses trailing thick black smoke all across the horizon. Sirens flared up and flashing lights darted between buildings, racing to the sites to put out the flames before they spread.
Sanada and Tezuka looked at one another, realization dawning on both of them.
“Attacks?”
“On who though?” Tezuka took the phone, realizing right away it was Kirihara’s, “who’s Tomoko?”
Momoshiro spun, grabbing the phone from Tezuka, “Tomoko? SHIT!” Shoving the phone back into Tezuka’s hand he sprinted to his desk. After rifling through his backpack and jacket he finally found his cell phone. “Son of a bitch!” he shouted, “Tomoko’s in one of those fires!”
“What are you saying Momo?” Tezuka, half listening, started breaking the Hunters up into two groups. Half was to go to Arai’s residence and the other half was to check out the fires. He opened his phone to dial Atobe, asking for his Hunters to meet them at Arai’s residence, since his lair was closest.
“Tomoko was staying in the Vampire half-way house, the houses where all the Fledglings stay when they’re all fucked up and scared.” Momoshiro grabbed his jacket and slipped back into his shoulder rig, “there’s tons of them all over town, Tomoko has kind of given us an idea of where they are and those fires look like they’re in the same areas as all those houses!”
Sanada snarled, “attacks on Fledglings? What the HELL is going on!?”
Shishido swung from the jeep; Tezuka’s boys were going to be late because of the traffic. It was going to be just him, Choutarou, and the cat. Gakuto sniffed the air and wrinkled his nose, “all I can smell is smoke.”
“Doesn’t matter, we know they’re here.”
“Yuushi should be here!” Gakuto crossed his arms with a huff, “and maybe some of Tezuka’s Hunters, since he’s so keen to order US around!”
Shishido growled at the Shifter and stormed around him, “Oshitari will be here, you know the fucking plan! Tezuka’s guys are on the opposite side of town, stuck in traffic cause of all those fires, stop being a prat!””
Gakuto stuck his tongue out and followed the Hunters towards the building. Whistling to himself Shishido found the back door and popped the lock, clipping a few stray wires before the fire alarm had a chance to go off. Checking to make sure there was no one around they took the emergency staircase three at a time to get to Arai’s floor. His door was at the far end of the hall, they cleared the floor quickly, not caring if they were heard.
Otori pressed his back to one side of the door and Gakuto to the other while Shishido lined himself up to kick in the door. One swift kick rattled and cracked the door, the voices inside became alarmed, muffled thumps and breaking glass spurred the Hunters to rush. One more kick and the door swung in, knocking someone back who was going for it.
The apartment was small, a typical bachelor pad. The furniture had been pushed to the outsides of the living-room and a battered and bloody body lay in the middle in a heap. The other two in the room cursed in shock and bolted, more worried about saving their necks then fighting back.
Shishido wasn’t having any of it.
He took chase, sprinting after one of the guys heading for the back patio door. He tackled him, sending them both into the glass door. It shattered and they tumbled onto the small patio, limbs tangled. He heard a feline scream followed by a terrified yell and the crack of wood from back in the apartment. The guy he felled rolled and kicked him in the stomach, Shishido grunted and curled in, trapping his foot.
“Fuck!” the guy yelled, “let go!”
Shishido twisted, bringing the guy down on top of him. He wheeled back with his elbow, connecting with the soft spot above the hip. He spun and whipped off the guy’s hood, “Vampire!” He hissed and drew back a fist.
The Vampire twisted and planted a fist in Shishido’s gut. When the Hunter lay back stunned, he scrambled to his feet. Shishido coughed and slowly pulled himself to his feet, trying not to throw up. The Vampire turned and swung his foot, connecting with Shishido’s chest. The kick threw the Hunter onto his back, sliding him into the broken door. Broken shards of glass dug into his arms and hip. The Vampire grabbed him by the front of his shirt and hauled him to the edge of the balcony. He grabbed the back of his belt and a fistful of the back of his collar and was about to haul him up and over then Shishido surprised him with a bullet in the stomach. The Vampire dropped him and staggered back, hands pressed to stop the bleeding.
“Silver, hurts like a bitch doesn’t it? I didn’t want to use this but you didn’t leave me with much of a choice.” Shishido leaned heavily against the balcony edge, very aware he had almost plummeted to his death. He checked the slide of his gun and aimed again, the Vampire dove through the broken door as two bullets shattered the glass behind his head. Shishido cursed and limped away from the balcony and back into the apartment. They didn’t have much time until the cops showed up now that the entire block had heard his gun go off. He quietly hoped the fires would slow them down.
One of the Vampires was lying face down in a pool of blood, Gakuto standing proudly on his back. Otori had another pressed in a corner, the pole from a floor lamp through his stomach.
The Vampire running from Shishido stopped dead in the living-room at the scene, with a curse he turned to bolt back outside but came face to face with the Hunter. Shishido raised his gun and before the Vampire could duck unloaded the clip into his chest.
“Don’t worry, I didn’t hit anything vital, might need to talk to you later.”
A fluttering and a loud thump sounded behind him on the balcony and the cheetah licked his lips and started purring happily.
“You’re late Oshitari!” Shishido growled without turning around. He eyed Gakuto warily, not used to hearing large predator cats purr, even though it sounded more like a low growl.
“Bit of a hold up, what with half the city burning down and all. I can see you handled it fine without me anyways.” He stepped around the shattered glass into the room and knelt down next to Arai’s prone form.
“He’s alive,” Otori said quietly as the Vampire pressed a finger under the curve of the Human’s jaw, “I checked earlier.”
“Just barely, best we get him back to Tezuka.” Oshitari pulled a blanket from a hall closet and wrapped Arai in it before gently hauling him over his shoulder. “I don’t think we have much time to clean up, shall we call it a burglary?”
Otori frowned, “I hear sirens, don’t know if we have that much time to make this look like anything other than what it is.”
“Well then gentlemen, I suggest we, how do you say it? G-T-F-O? I do believe I saw a truck waiting a block away?”
Akazawa sat behind the wheel of the large Suburban, hands gripping hard enough to turn his knuckles white. Yuuta and Atsushi were jogging the extra block to the building, having received a text that everything was dealt with. Oshitari brought Arai to the truck and gently laid him in the back, Atsushi mended him as best as he could while Shishido, Yuuta, and Otori bleached the apartment and wiped off any surface they touched. It looked like a bad cover-up, but as long as all evidence of them being there was gone they didn’t care how shitty it looked. The cruisers were tied up in traffic, which gave them plenty of time to get out of the apartment and at least a block away.
Yuuta’s phone vibrated and he flipped it open without checking. “Yeah?”
“Oh thank god you’re alive! Tezuka told me to phone you but I don’t know what’s going on, something about a fire?”
Yuuta held the phone away from his ear, waiting for Mizuki’s tirade to finish. The sensitive ears in the truck hissed and yelled in indignation. “Whoa, slow down Mizuki-san, yeah, I’m alive …our team made it, we weren’t in the building when it was attacked.”
Mizuki sighed, tears clear in his voice. “What about the fire?”
“Someone’s lighting up Vampire shelters, mostly everyone is on their way there. We just finished up at Arai’s.”
“I know, I’m looping the video feed so they don't see you.”
Ah, right, cameras, “uhh, thanks.” They had all forgot. Yuuta scratched nervously at the back of his head, “are you okay?”
“I am now, where are you?”
“On our way back to the Organization-“
“Can they drop you off here?”
Yuuta blinked at the phone, was now really the time? “Um …” he looked around at the others in the truck. The Vampire they kept alive was bound and gagged behind them, Gakuto, still in his cheetah form, was sprawled on top of him.
Otori looked over his shoulder from the front seat, “does he want us to pick him up?” He had the grace to look embarrassed for over hearing, even if it was an accident.
Mizuki was quiet for a moment, “I have my car, I have files and pictures I think Tezuka needs to see, I just can’t carry it all myself.”
“Oh!” Yuuta exclaimed, buying the weak story, “sure, I’ll have them swing me by.”
Mizuki chuckled after he hung up, Yuuta was so gullible. He could have easily put anything onto a drive and given that to Tezuka. He just wanted to see Yuuta, to see for himself that he was safe. It was petty and selfish, but he needed to make sure for himself that the Hunter was alive. Talking to him over the phone meant nothing. He didn’t know when he had become so attached, he never really realized he was that attached until Yuuta was in harm’s way. After the witch attack Yuuta was constantly on his mind, and fear for his welfare burned in his stomach. Almost a year passed and it had only gotten worse. All Hunters lives were in danger, every one of them, including himself, but only Yuuta kept him awake at night. He feared for the rest of his team and the rest of the Hunters, they were family, but Yuuta truly scared him. The other Hunter was blissfully unaware of his feelings, and he thought it would be better that way. He was wrong, so wrong. Keeping himself at a distance was becoming harder and harder, not being able to reach out and wrap his arms around that strong body, not being able to run and bury his face into that broad chest was turning into a physical ache for him.
The buzzer went off and he lurched from his chair to let Yuuta in. The trip from the main floor to his apartment took on average 2.34 minutes, and he knew Yuuta’s long legs would take him less than that. He danced from foot to foot waiting for the tell-tale knock on his door and as his mental tally was reaching 2 minutes there was a soft knock. His body reacted before his brain did and he threw the door open and launched himself at Yuuta. The taller Hunter yelped in shock and instinctively wrapped his arms around Mizuki’s waist.
“Whoa! What’s wrong?” He pulled back and tilted his head down to look Mizuki in the eye.
Mizuki recomposed himself and stepped back, “I’m sorry …I’m just happy you’re alive …” he cleared his throat and twirled a lock of hair by his ear, a nervous habit. He held his door open and Yuuta stepped in, toeing off his boots.
“The files for Tezuka?”
“Ah yes!” Mizuki snapped out of his daydreaming, remembering why Yuuta was there. His eyes wandered over the strong back as Yuuta stuck his hands in his back pockets and surveyed the room. The tee-shirt was drawn tight, showing off the curves of muscle in his shoulder blades.
“This is my first time here!” He turned and smiled at the other Hunter.
Mizuki smiled back, nodding, “yes it is.” His mind wandered to how he could distract Yuuta from the fact he blatantly lied to get him here, to get him away from the fighting he knew the Hunter desperately wanted to join.
“What’s wrong?” The Hunter suddenly frowned, worry creasing between his eyes.
“Nothing!” Mizuki cursed himself.
Yuuta frowned playfully, “lying to a telepath, really?”
Mizuki tried to laugh but it only came out as a puff of air, “I …” the words caught in his throat. Since when was he ever at a loss for words? When his dignity wouldn’t let him say them, that was when. He cast his eyes down, trying to think of a way to cover. He squeaked in shock when Yuuta suddenly wrapped him in a hug, pressing his face to the strong curve of his neck. The Hunter smelled like a mix of bleach, dust, and cologne.
“What are you so sad about?” Yuuta mumbled into his hair, “I keep seeing myself in your head.”
Well, no use lying anymore. “That’s an annoying habit you know,” Mizuki brought his arms up, wrapping them around Yuuta and grabbing a fistful of his shirt.
“I know.” He leaned his head down and buried it in the crook of Mizuki’s neck.
A chill ran up Mizuki’s spine when warm breath puffed against his bare skin. He didn’t want Yuuta picking up on THAT train of thought right yet, so he quickly started babbling to distract the telepath. “I was afraid for you, I’ve been afraid for you for a long time. No one called me to tell me what was going on so I panicked. When you called I had to make sure for myself that you were okay!” Cursing himself for letting his babbling get a little too truthful he jumped back to his original lie, “I have pictures of the Vampires that were in the apartment, and I have some strange files and phone calls from the police station.”
“You really didn’t need me here to carry anything did you?” There was humor in his voice.
Mizuki cursed himself again, “ …no.”
Yuuta stepped back, taking Mizuki’s hands from around his back. He pushed Mizuki’s hands up under his shirt and over his stomach, “see? No marks, no wounds.” He pushed them higher to his chest and released Mizuki’s hands when they started to rise on their own, “I’m okay.” Mizuki continued moving his hands up until they both worked Yuuta’s shirt off. Yuuta turned around and let Mizuki run his hands down his back, “just bruises.” Mizuki hit a large bruise on his shoulder and he flinched.
“What did this?” Mizuki leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss to the dark mark before he realized what he was doing.
He felt Yuuta’s breath hitch before he quietly answered, “concrete pillar.” His voice was deeper.
Muscles jumped under Mizuki’s fingers as he inspected Yuuta’s back. It was obvious that Yuuta had been through some hard spots; fine scars and a few fresh scratches covered his back, and his arm was torn up and bandaged but it didn’t seem to be bothering him.
“Your arm?”
Yuuta flinched and looked down at his bandaged arm, “torn up on a bottle, Inui-sensei patched me up pretty well though.”
Mizuki slid his hands around Yuuta’s sides, pressing himself against Yuuta’s back. He pressed his face to the back of his shoulders, letting himself draw in the others strength and heat.
“I told you I’m fine.”
“I know,” but he didn’t want to move. His hands were pressed flat against Yuuta’s stomach, the side of one hand resting against his belt buckle. He felt the muscles flutter as Yuuta’s breathing quickened.
“Mizuki? We should …uh …probably get back to everyone …”
Damn him! Mizuki pressed himself flush against Yuuta’s back, feeling the tight curve of the other’s backside against his hips. “Just stay a little longer …” he couldn’t disguise the whine in his voice.
Yuuta ran his hands gently along Mizuki’s arms, “I won’t leave.”
“Yuuta, can you do me a favor?”
“Hm?” Yuuta looked back over his shoulder at the mop of black curls. “Anything.”
“Kiss me.”
Yuuta inhaled sharply, not sure if he heard him right, “uh, Mizuki …”
The other Hunter suddenly pulled away from him, “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to-“ he was silenced when Yuuta grabbed the back of his neck and kissed him. He melted against Yuuta’s chest, hands pressed firmly against the swell of muscle. Yuuta wasn’t aggressive like he had assumed he would be, the other Hunter was very gentle, and very thorough. Every inch of Mizuki’s mouth was explored, the curve of his full bottom lip was teased and nipped.
Yuuta’s hands dropped to his thighs and suddenly he was lifted off the ground, he wrapped his legs around Yuuta’s waist as he was moved backwards onto his computer chair. They collapsed into the chair, Mizuki straddling Yuuta’s lap.
Yuuta grinned crookedly, “sorry.”
Mizuki shook his head, “don’t be,” he let out a soft giggle, “I rather enjoy this.”
“Good,” Yuuta tangled his hand into the back of Mizuki’s head and pulled him back for another kiss.
Mizuki’s hips rocked involuntarily as he kissed the other Hunter and suddenly Yuuta’s hands were gripping his backside, “whoa, don’t do that.” Yuuta groaned.
“Do what?” Mizuki tilted his head.
Yuuta moaned and buried his face in the crook of Mizuki’s neck, “you’re grinding.” He nipped gently at Mizuki’s fluttering pulse.
Mizuki grinned, “and?”
“And we do have to make it back to work soon,” he ended with a deep moan when Mizuki rolled his hips again.
Mizuki slid from Yuuta’s lap, and using the Hunters belt, pulled him from the chair to the floor. He spread his legs and Yuuta lay down between his thighs. “We’ll make it there eventually.”
Yuuta chuckled, “you’re not going to give up now that you’ve got me here are you?”
“Nope,” Mizuki pressed his knees to either side of Yuuta’s hips, feeling the bite of sharp bone. He wrapped his arms around the Hunters neck and pulled him down. His hands slid down Yuuta’s arms, which were flexed with the effort to hold himself above the smaller body. He hooked his heels behind Yuuta’s backside and pushed their hips together. As soon as Yuuta pressed against him he could tell how turned on Yuuta actually was. He moaned and rocked his hips, rubbing Yuuta’s length against his own.
“Shit,” Yuuta cursed, “right here on the floor?”
Mizuki nodded, working Yuuta’s belt from his pants. He unbuttoned his jeans and slid his hand inside, gripping him. Yuuta moaned and flexed his hips against Mizuki’s hand. He ducked back down to kiss Mizuki again, tongue pressing his mouth open. He pushed Mizuki’s shirt up under his arms and leaned back, never breaking their kiss, so Mizuki could pull his shirt over his head. Once the material was out of the way Yuuta closed the distance, forcing Mizuki back to the floor. They wiggled and twisted and managed to get Mizuki’s pants out of the way. Yuuta shifted his boxers and jeans out of the way to expose himself, nudging between Mizuki’s legs. Mizuki spat in the palm of his hand and used it to slick Yuuta, he wanted this before Yuuta had time to think it over. He was afraid taking the time to run to the bathroom would give Yuuta just enough time to reconsider. Yuuta had enough testosterone that one touch had him thinking from the wrong end, and he didn't want to lose that edge.
He raised his hips as he guided Yuuta forward. It was tight and they both winced when Yuuta started to enter. The Hunter paused and tried to pull away but Mizuki caught him under the arm.
“It’s fine! I’m just not stretched,” he pleaded.
“I should have done this right,” Yuuta frowned, drawing himself out. He placated Mizuki by kissing him thoroughly as he pressed a finger into him. He worked the little Hunter enough to try again. This time there was less friction and Yuuta slid in easily. Mizuki sighed and arched his back, legs trembling where they gripped Yuuta’s waist. He gasped every time Yuuta slid in an out, keeping a slow steady rhythm.
He knew they needed to be quick, but he didn’t want this to end, and with Yuuta’s leisurely pace he didn’t think he wanted it to be over either. Yuuta kept himself propped above Mizuki on his elbows, the smaller Hunter had his arms wrapped across his back, nails digging into his skin. He knew Mizuki wasn’t that much shorter than him, but it wasn’t until now that he realized it was all leg. Mizuki arched up gasped, rocking his hips in time with Yuuta’s thrusts.
Yuuta suddenly hooked his arms under Mizuki’s hips and swung him upward. Mizuki cried out when their positions shifted. He was back to straddling Yuuta, the Hunter clutched his backside to guide him across his lap. Mizuki rolled his hips and panted as he danced in Yuuta’s lap, the other Hunter finally showing signs of strain. His breathing quickened and his hips lost their calculated rhythm. Mizuki tilted his head and kissed Yuuta frantically. Every time he rose up he was forced to break the kiss but when he dropped himself back down they met for a hungry and desperate kiss.
Mizuki gripped himself when he realized how close he was but Yuuta brushed his hand away. As soon as Yuuta’s large hand closed around him he jerked his hips back, hitting the spot inside Mizuki. He cried out as he orgasmed, body arching as he pressed his face into Yuuta’s shoulder. His muscles contracted and with a sharp groan Yuuta climaxed, his fingers digging into the skin of Mizuki’s backside as he pulled their hips tighter together.
Yuuta collapsed back on the floor with a chuckle, white stains across his stomach. “Aniki is going to be so pissed.”
Mizuki grinned, enjoying the feel of Yuuta still deep inside of him, “and why is that?”
“Not only did I bail on everyone, but I did it to have sex with you.”
Mizuki traced the muscles of Yuuta’s stomach, “you don’t have to tell him …”
“He’ll smell it on me in no time.”
Mizuki sighed and pulled himself off of Yuuta. He took a moment to enjoy the sight of the Hunter on his floor; hands behind his head, legs spread, jeans around his thighs, semen splattered across the strong muscles of his stomach, cock lying against the curve of his hip. And the best part was he was completely unashamed.
Mizuki squatted next to his computer, regretting it the moment something warm started trailing down his legs. He sighed as he plugged in a usb drive and loaded all the files for Tezuka onto it. Yuuta curled up behind him, and Mizuki was disappointed to find he had pulled his pants back into place. Yuuta’s hands ran down his thighs as he kissed the back of his shoulder.
“I think we need to wash up before we go anywhere.”
Tezuka stood behind Inui’s shoulder as the doctor examined the x-ray’s against the light board.
“How long will he be out?” Tezuka glanced over his shoulder to the hospital bed behind him. Arai lay among the white blankets and machines, breathing slowly in a sedated sleep.
“Few hours at least, those Vampires did a number on him, there was a lot we had to go in and fix.” Inui turned off the light and pulled the x-rays back down. “He may not be awake for a while, and even then he might not be coherent."
“Do you think they were trying to tie up loose ends?” Tezuka asked.
Inui smiled, “that’s your expertise Tezuka, this is mine.” He checked the chart at the end of the bed before ushering Tezuka out of the room. “I’ll let you know the moment he’s awake.”
Tezuka nodded, “if I’m not here Oishi will be.”
“Oh? Going somewhere?” Inui raised an eyebrow.
“There’s fires all over town, and if my boys are right there will be a lot of dead bodies we're going to need to clean up. Quietly.”
