Katherine approached D slowly. Here stood her friend, her lover, and the greatest Hunter alive, and she knew that she must part with him. She didn’t want him seeing her like this. He didn’t need to see her pain and anger come forth and take her over. She would soon become the monster he had feared that he had created last night.
“I need some time. I need to be alone to sort this out.”
“Let me help you bury them.” He reached for her again but she stepped back. This one motion wounded him more than she knew. His hands fell back to his sides and his face closed up.
“I have to do this alone. They were the only family I had; I need to be the one to care for them. I will have to see to the farm as well while I am here. Then, I must avenge them.” Her face darkened. “Promise me you will not kill Pseudo while you are gone. I will be the one to rip his head off no matter what, do you understand?”
D nodded. He wanted to embrace her, to comfort her, but in her present mental state it was impossible. After last night and their unforgettable time together, here they were parting ways again.
She looked in his eyes and her own faded from red back to blue. “Farewell my love, I shall find you in due time.” She grasped his hand firmly in hers for a moment before turning away from him. He understood he was dismissed and as much as he hated this short goodbye, he would not anger her further. The dhampir mounted his horse.
“Katherine,” he called down to her and she turned. “You know that this wasn’t your fault. Don’t go blaming yourself.”
“Then whose fault is it? Would they have been attacked if they were someone else’s family? I think not.” The look on her face was indescribably sad as she bent over her brother’s corpse. D rode away.
It wasn’t until after Dathan and Lindsay were buried beside her parents that she allowed herself to cry. Lindsay’s parents stood by as she labored to dig the graves herself. Her sister-in-law’s father had offered to help but she refused in a tone that quieted further questions. She wanted no formal funeral, she was still too angry with the town for not coming to their aid and Lindsay’s parents agreed.
When the dark earth covered their bodies and the handmade crosses were at their heads, she threw herself over her brother’s grave and cried herself hysterical. Now she had no home to return to. Now she was the last of her clan. And now, dear Dathan, her poor sweet brother, was gone forever; his wife and unborn child with him. She was tempted to dig her own grave beside him and bury herself in it, but she had work to do. Bloody work was still before her.
He should have known better. Katherine knew about his cousin’s farm outside of town. It was the worst place he could have chosen to hide out. He was outside the forest, gathering berries for his trip tomorrow through the mountains when he heard a noise. There she was: red hair on a white horse flying toward him and Ray was afraid. He stood rooted to the spot, fear immobilizing him. She did not slow when she came beside him; just grabbed him by the collar and dragged him, screaming, into the forest.
This was not his dear Katie. This demon with red eyes that screamed curses while dragging him through bushes and thorns was a being he had never seen before. Finally, she threw him against a tree and leaped to the ground. He looked up to find her sword millimeters from his eye. He wet himself.
“Why? Just tell me why you would betray us,” her voice was steel.
“I did not know he would kill them Katie, I swear!” he was on his knees, begging. He said he would hold them ransom until you returned. He swore he only wanted the dhampir. He promised!”
“And you were foolish enough to believe him? He did not wait for my return! He killed them to send a message to me. He used you, you fool! And poor Lindsay with a child…”
“I only wanted you to come home! I wanted things to be like they were before you met that damn Hunter! Katie, I only did it because I love you!”
She slapped his face with the broad side of her sword and spit in his eye. “You invited him to kill my family because you love me? You are lower than any monster I have ever killed. And because of that I will show you no mercy. It will not be a quick painless death for you, you that I once called friend.”
He screamed and flailed as she dragged his flaming body through the desert sands. But she was deaf to his cries of agony. She was blind to the sight of his flesh burning black and his hair, now a pile of ashes on his head. Katherine did not relish in his pain, she only knew she could not rest until he suffered as they had. And he did. She left his unconscious body in the desert with no relief from the sun or water to cool him in sight. And still she was not satisfied. Pseudo was still left. But her vengeance must wait until matters with the farm were settled.
For months he traveled with no word from Katherine. The days seemed gray and the nights very long without her by his side. He had grown so used to her presence; he had taken for granted the times she would be there to smile at him in the morning and gaze up at the stars with him at night. He missed her horribly and he realized he didn’t feel complete without her. The emotions in his heart that he had kept in check for so many years seemed to be taking control of him. And all because of this one girl. It was not in his nature to miss anyone but it was hard to return to the dark once you’d seen the light of the sun.
Finally, after weeks of wandering and a few odd jobs, he turned back to Haven. D told himself he was just checking on her. He just wanted to see her face again. When he entered town, the people seemed more hostile than usual. They turned away from him and didn’t acknowledge him. When he stood before the shambles of a once magnificent home, he found men clearing away the rubble. D dismounted his horse and hailed one of the men.
“Where is the owner?”
The man looked at him fearfully. “Do you mean Mr. Clemmons or his sister?”
“The latter.”
“She sold the horses and the land, all except the gravesite, a few weeks back. She just left without a word to anyone. There were a few who were sad to see her go. Up until the fire, she protected this valley. If only we had protected her family in return.” The man bowed his head for a moment before resuming his work.
D walked to the graves and examined the new headstones for Dathan and his wife. They must have cost her a pretty penny, but the price of this land would cover it ten times over. With that and the money she had earned from the Scarlet Hunter’s battles, she should be able to start a new life elsewhere. Perhaps that’s what she had done: went far away to start over. He knew he should be happy for her, but his heart was like lead in his chest. Was in so easy for her to forget about him? Would he see her again?
