Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Fourteen
Age Seventeen
It was no wonder that there weren't that many trainers much less breeders who focused solely on Dragon type pokemon. Other than the fact that there weren't very many dragon types, thus limiting the options, whoever trained Dragon pokemon really need to give one-hundred percent of their attention to whichever dragon type they were dealing with. More than any other pokemon type you had interacted with so far the dragon type pokemon demanded all of your attention. They seemed to sense when you weren't completely focused on them. And it made their tempers rise which of course wasn't that safe when you needed to groom them.
In fact, that was exactly how you hurt your wrist. When you'd accidentally brushed Fraxure's spine a little too hard with the scrub brush, he had responded by smacking you with his tail. Thankfully there hadn't been a fracture or anything of the like but it had been very sore afterwards. Carrying the trays of pokemon food into the dehydrator had almost killed your hand. And setting up camp in the area had been a pain and the half. In the end, though, it had been worth it.
You laid down on an extra, small sized tarp by the lake. The warmth of the sun had been nearly unbearable during the day but by the water it wasn't as bad. You even managed to stand letting Nox lay his head on your hip as you relaxed. You could feel his evened out breathing as you stared out into the water. The way the sun set over the hills just past the lake gave a shadow to the far edge which faded the closer it got to you. The sun itself sparkled when it touched the water, making the entire place look magical. You supposed the whole idea of magic was, itself, derived off of nature. It was exceptionally beautiful for moments like this.
Even your tenacious Flareon found peace in the tranquility of the day's dusk. His body was stretched out over the sun warmed rocks beside you. You had taken quite a bit of time to clear out the rocks to make an area large enough to pitch your cocoon shaped tent and to lay out a tarp to take in the last rays of the sun. Not that he seemed to mind any of that. The rocks suited him more than laying on your tarp with you and Nox. Somehow hit gave him a more majestic 'look at my fabulous self' vibe.
Before it got too late you regrettably moved from your relaxed position. As you pushed yourself up you nearly collapsed back to the ground. The ache in your wrist made putting any weight on it nearly unbarable. The only thing that stopped you from hitting the ground again was the fact that Nox shoved himself under your arm and supported your shoulder. You looked at him with such gratitude that you were pretty sure if he could blush, he would be.
"Who hurt you?"
Well wasn't he getting defensive. Despite how grateful you were for him saving you from an extremely embarrassing crash back down to the ground, you couldn't help but roll your eyes. He always jumped to violent or extreme conclusions.
"It happened during work, Nox, calm down," you said in an exasperated tone.
Now that you were mostly sitting up it was easier to get on your feet. Even when you got to your feet and started to roll the tarp back up, you could tell that Nox wasn't happy. The hair on the back of his spine were still ruffled up as aggression practically seeped through all his pores.
Flareon yawned as he got up from his rocks. They were still heated from his body temperature but had lost the sun warmth quality by this point no doubt. As he moved over towards you and Nox he did what was perhaps one of the most unhelpful things to date.
"It was the male Fraxure's fault," he told Nox casually.
You stared at Flareon as though you were trying to gauge if that really happened. The sound of Nox growling deep and viciously had almost been expected after such a statement. What had motivated him to tell Nox which pokemon had been the one to hurt you? Oh sure you saw the flicker of concern in his face as he passed but that didn't seem like it should have translated towards him being a tattle tale. If he was so concerned about you, he really shouldn't have told Nox anything.
"It wasn't," you covered in an honest tone. You didn't think it was their fault, after all. "I wasn't paying attention and I pressed too hard with the brush. You know how hard those bristles are. He was just reacting out of pain."
"That doesn't give him the right to hurt you," Nox said in a dark tone.
Hey, look, he really was trying to live up to his type. You shivered at the down right evil look in his glowing red eyes. The pupil had slitted as his whole body tensed up. Before he had time to decide to go after the fraxure, and possibly getting hurt himself (you weren't too sure how strong he was, honestly), you laid your hand on his head. Nox's eyes moved up to you rapidly as he gauged your expression. Even though you didn't think it was Fraxure's fault it was obvious that he did. And it wasn't until you started to hum one of the lullabies you'd used over the years that he calmed down. The extremely strange thing was that you could have sworn a green wave passed from your hand and down over his body. And almost as soon as he was calm it felt like the energy had drained out of you.
With weakened steps you moved over to pitch the tent while there was still some daylight. Umbreon's rings would light up once it got dark and Flareon could just light something on fire for you but you didn't want to have to rely on that. They already did so much for you on your camping days. Especially since they really got nothing special out of the camping days than any other day. In fact, at least when you were at home they each had their own bed. Umbreon usually ended up sleeping in yours regardless but that was besides the point.
Once the tent was completely pitched up you started on making the fire. You babied your damaged wrist as you stacked the small things of wood and got to work on preparing dinner. Flareon saved you the trouble of igniting the wood yourself with a small spark. You smiled in thanks as you laid the bundles of tin foil covered food inside of the ring of fire.
You got up and stretched after the food had been placed into the fire. It would take a while yet to cook and you had no plans on wasting any time. With a careful look around you started to peel off the layers of clothes that had oh so nicely stuck to your skin through the warm day. Neither of your pokemon were surprised by your actions as they were far too used to such a thing. It wasn't like you were every overtly modest with them. Then again both Flareon and Nox had a tendency to look away when you started to undress. Which was always a little amusing because pokemon didn't naturally wear clothes so you weren't sure why or how the idea of modesty through fabric had been transmuted onto their psyches.
Once your clothes were in a pile by the tent you moved towards the lake. The waters were still warm enough from the heated weather that you didn't have to worry about catching a chill or anything. At the same time they helped to cool down your body from the hard work you had done that day. The deeper you moved into the water the better everything just started to feel. You even closed your eyes and relaxed once you got to a floating depth.
Pokemon lived in this lake, of course, but none of them you were too worried about. Most of the pokemon at the ranch were tamed enough for anyone to be around. Of course there were the exceptions to the rule as wild pokemon had a habit of stumbling in from time to time. Then there were the stubborn pokemon from exasperated trainers that were either dropped off for training or abandoned completely. Still, you weren't worried about any of those interrupting your bathing time.
After you felt like you were about to become a prune you returned back to a spot where you could stand up. The sand and mud mixture squished beneath your feet as you scrubbed down. The soap you used was one-hundred percent plant based and broke down in the water even as you rinsed down. Everything had been going fine...right up to the point where you started to wash your hair.
As you started to lather your long locks, Nox full out snarled. On instinct you duct into the water and looked around, trying to catch sight of anything in the dark. It was easy to see Nox. His rings glowed bright gold under even the smallest sliver of moon above you. Flareon stood next to the fire so you could make out him as well. None of that was out of the ordinary. What surprised you the most was the third body you saw. Your jaw dropped open as your stomach clenched tight.
No way…
Rorsh. It was Rorsh.
You made your way through the water and quickly pulled a towel off of a taller rock once you got to shore. As you wrapped the fabric around yourself a million thoughts flew through your head. Somehow you knew that the espeon just out of reach of the fire's main light was Rorsh. You could feel it all the way down into your soul.
Glee and fear raced through you hand in hand. You were practically reduced to a giddy school girl seeing him once more. Yet at the same time the fear that he wasn't here to stay started to saw back and forth at your heart. The fear that he had come back with another trainer was only second place to that fear.
"There you are," Rorsh's voice washed over your mind like dark chocolate.
You practically melted at hearing him inside of your mind once more. Your lips split into a smile as you moved in closer.
"I've returned," he spoke out as he took a step towards you.
Seriously, if he was a human he'd have to go into acting or talk shows. His voice was far too nice to waste on anything else. In fact, if he'd been human you were pretty sure that his voice would win 'sexy voice of the year'...or invent such such a contest in the first place. Then again, maybe you were just exaggerating because you had missed him so very much.
The smile on your face was quickly replaced with a look of horror as you watched Nox rush at him from the side.
