———————————————————————————
Days passed and Tsuki blocked the entryway to her room, preferring to stay in the calm environment of her water garden. She made it apparent that she did not want any visitors, and Homura aided in her request, cautioning the henchmen within the tower to refrain from attempting to approach the floor to her personal sanctuary.
Homura was in his room, looking at the Seiten and Maten scriptures still in his possession. Tsuki materialized in the room after receiving a request from Shien that Homura had something important to tell her. “Good afternoon, my dear,” he called out to her. Tsuki noted the scriptures in his hands.
“What is it,” she asked.
“I have decided to move up the date. I invited Konzen and his friends to come by. They should be arriving within the next few hours.”
Tsuki was taken aback by the suddenness of the move. “Already,” she asked. Homura turned to Tsuki, a pained look on his face as he turned back to the scriptures in his hands. Tsuki noted his sullen look as Homura seemed lost in thought for a moment. Suddenly, Homura felt a tightness in his chest, dropping the scriptures as he fell to his bed and gripped his chest.
“Homura,” Tsuki cried out as she ran to his side, his breathing was heavy and ragged.
“I’m running out of time,” he choked hoarsely.
Tsuki looked at him confused. What did he mean by this? In all the centuries she had known Homura, he never fell ill nor was he ever severely injured like this. Tortured, yes, but it was never anything he couldn’t recover from. Whatever he was experiencing at that moment appeared to be something debilitating.
“If you need a new Heaven and Earth to recover from whatever this is,” Tsuki began, “I will stay by your side today, to ensure the success of the new world.” Homura turned to her. “I swear to you,” she continued, “Konzen be damned, I will kill them all if it means we can be together.” Catching his breath, Homura stood upright, smiling at Tsuki as he gently caressed her face, drinking in the happiness exuding from her expression.
“Do not tell Shien or Xenon,” Homura whispered. Tsuki wanted to pry as to why he would ask her to keep something this important a secret, but if he was choosing to finally make his move today, then it wasn’t anything to worry about.
“Come,” he began, “let us go to the highest floor. I have already drawn out the pentagram needed to open the gate.”
Tsuki gave him a bright smile back, relieved and excited for the battle that was to come their way as they came closer to the end of this long journey. She picked up the scriptures and leaned against Homura’s chest as he embraced her tightly, teleporting them both to the highest floor within Konran Tower.
Tsuki looked around the room, not having been to this specific floor before. The room was without windows with a large, intricate pentagram drawn on the floor. She heard Homura chuckle as he held one scripture in each hand, satisfied with his work as he walked closer to the pentagram.
Homura clenched his chest again, dropping both scriptures as he fell to a knee. Tsuki cried out to him and ran to his side, the scriptures unfurling across the floor. His breathing was heavy as Homura struggled to breathe.
“We can’t do this today,” Tsuki suggested.
“No, Homura choked, “if we delay this any further, we will miss the opportune moment to make this happen again. Just give me a few minutes.”
Tsuki helped Homura to his feet, taking him to the wall for support. Homura sat down, leaning his head back against the wall, trying to regain control of his breathing. Tsuki gathered the two scrolls, rolling them back up before setting them next to Homura.
“If we’re going to do this,” she began, “I’m going to go back down to my room real quick.” Homura stared at her, a look of exhaustion on his face as she knelt down and gently cupped his face. Homura shook his head, pointing to a cabinet sitting near a door on the far side of the room.
“By the doors,” he began, “I prepared something for you.” Tsuki could feel her heart begin to race. “You should see a tall cabinet. Inside each drawer and the doors on the sides, I prepared some tools and other things you usually use during battle. I also prepared a few new creations that I thought you might find useful.”
A light blush appeared on her cheeks. She had already packed her satchel, and despite being angry with Homura, he had already done so much for her. She was already grateful to him and began to wonder if he was doing this all in preparation to start a new life together. Why else would he work so hard to gain her forgiveness completely? Tsuki gave a small smile and sat next to him, hesitantly leaning against him as they waited for Shien and Xenon.
•
After some time passed, Xenon and Shien appeared in the room. Tsuki turned to them, straightening herself and gave them a nod. They noted the light sheen of sweat across Homura’s brow as Xenon quirked a brow. “What, did we ruin ‘alone time’,” Xenon scoffed.
“Shut it,” Tsuki snapped. Xenon gave a short chuckle before returning his attention to Homura who opened his eyes under heavy lids.
“You look rough, man,” Xenon commented, “something wrong?”
“No,” Homura grunted as Tsuki helped him to his feet. She handed Homura the two scriptures as he straightened himself, walking towards his other two henchmen who did not wish to pry further. It was clear that something was going on with Homura, but no one in the room would question further. Any shred of doubt or hesitation would jeopardize everything.
“They are curious though, aren’t they?”
“Huh?” Tsuki asked as Homura slowly made his way to the glowing inscription on the floor.
“At first glance, they appear to have nothing at all in common. Yet they work together in perfect harmony, each one’s strength making up for the other’s weakness,” Homura commented.
“Genjo Sanzo,” Tsuki replied.
“Cho Hakkai,” Shien echoed.
“Sha Gojyo,” Xenon chimed in.
“And....Son Goku,” Homura continued, “A creature born from a rock on Mount Kaka. Your individuality makes you invincible. A heretic with golden eyes. He is the secret. Son Goku must be captured.”
Shien gave a short chuckle. “This is exactly what we’ve been preparing for all this time.” Tsuki turned to him, he seemed ready for the fight of his life. Though he rarely showed any type of emotion, Tsuki could sense a bit of excitement in Shien’s response.
“So, you need the monkey to create a new Heaven and Earth, is that it,” asked Tsuki.
“Well, you get the prize,” Homura sarcastically commented, a grin pulling at his lips as he gripped the two scriptures.
“The Holy Army is reporting that Sanzo and party have already breached the tower,” Shien reported.
“It’s too bad you couldn’t have made yourself useful and created a barrier to seal the doors, eh, Tsuki,” Xenon commented. She shot him a glare, not in the mood for games.
“I don’t think that would have been necessary seeing as we actually need them here,” Tsuki sharply replied.
“I have a feeling Goku won’t need any help finding us.” Xenon ignored Tsuki’s comment. “But,” he continued, “it won’t do us any good if he gets killed, now will it?”
“He’s not much good to us if he can’t even get this far, now is he,” Tsuki commented.
“Don’t you worry,” Homura finally stated, “he’ll be here. I have no doubt.” Tsuki smiled, trusting that everything was going the way Homura wanted them too considering all the times he had led Sanzo and the others on, constantly interrupting whatever journey they were on. Her eyes gave off a small glow as a gust of wind generated from her energies, whirling lightly around the room before both the wind and the glow in her eyes faded.
The smile on Homura’s face stretched wide in anticipation. He took the scriptures and walked to two points of the star within the pentagram on the floor, placing the two across from one another before heading to the top point.
“Behold, gentlemen,” Homura started, his arms held out wide before turning to her, “my lady.” Tsuki smiled at being addressed in such a way. “The pentagram,” he continued, “with the power to create Heaven and Earth. The Maten scripture occupies this point of the star. The Seiten scripture occupies the other. Tsuki.”
“Yes, Homura,” she replied.
“You need not be in the pentagram for this.” Tsuki nodded and stepped away from the outer ring of the inscription. Homura smiled at her and turned back to Xenon and Shien on the other side of the circle and stepped onto the top point of the star.
“As we take the place of the three remaining scriptures,” he continued as Shien and Xenon took their place at the other remaining points, “the five points of the star are completed.” The entire marking of the inscription began to glow brightly, illuminating the room before a tornado of energy gathered at the exact center of the circle.
The energy radiating from the tornado took everyone but Homura by surprise. Tsuki’s body began to tingle at the overwhelming surge of power that was apparent in the room. “What incredible power,” Shien gasped. Homura smiled as the other three marveled at the power radiating through them.
“Just look at it,” Xenon began, “all that power resonating from the five corner points is collecting in the middle.”
“But it’s not only our powers collecting,” replied Shien, “It feels like all the spiritual power of the entire world is being transported through us towards the center.”
“It’s amazing, isn’t it? All we’ve done is stand in our places,” Xenon commented.
“I can’t say I’m surprised,” Tsuki chimed in, “We are talking about harnessing enough energy to recreate the universe after all.”
“But I’m afraid it’s still incomplete.” Homura spoke out, Tsuki turned to him. “Only by placing Son Goku in the center of the pentagram will we be able to conjure up the power necessary to replace Shanghai-La with a new world. He is the key.”
The amount of power in the room was incredible, Tsuki wished she could experience the feeling with the others, standing at Homura’s side. It was still amazing just feeling the sensations permeating throughout the room.
The four of them stood in silence, Homura lowered his head and concentrated. Tsuki and the guys didn’t say a word. Everything had to go exactly right in order for Goku to meet them in a hurry. After some time passed, Homura lifted his head, bringing his arms to his front, palms up with his fingers directed at the center of the pentagram.
“Let us begin.”
Shien and Xenon copied Homura, following his movements as pillars of light from each detailed rune on the floor reached towards the ceiling. The three of them began to exude the same type of glow as a gust of wind blew from the pentagram. Homura’s eyes began to glow, his hair and jacket waving wildly in the air. Tsuki could feel her hair stand on end, her eyes lighting up at the scene displayed before her.
She shook her head, reminding herself to stay focused. Tsuki approached the doors, heading over to the cabinet Homura pointed out earlier. She opened one of the drawers, marveling at the drawer loaded with everything Tsuki could ever need to launch her earthly attacks. She combed through each one of the drawers before opening one of the doors on the side, revealing custom artillery belts for all her little tricks: seeds, dirt, little seedlings in nurseries, and even vials of water in various shapes.
Tsuki opened the door on the other side and saw what appeared to be something fashioned like small bombs. The outside of the device was intricately woven like a basket with some gaps, the contents stuffed inside appeared to be the little pods she had created. Throwing one of these would definitely drown a sizable area in plant life. Tsuki removed her satchel, strapping on an artillery belt and loaded it up, tying a few of the bombs together and attached them to her belt.
Even if he was awful with words, Homura showed his feelings for her in other ways. With everything that he had done for her, Tsuki strengthened her resolve, determined to repay every bit of his kindness. She threw a few extra things in her satchel before closing the cabinet and turned back towards the guys.
Suddenly, there was a new surge of power resonating throughout Konran Tower. It was the darkest of any demonic presence Tsuki had ever felt. A chill shot down her spine as she felt her face go cold. “What is that,” she thought to herself. It certainly wasn’t one of their gods, nor any of their demons.
No one in the Sanzo party was powerful enough to almost strike pure fear into Tsuki’s heart. It was an overwhelming sensation. She quickly adjusted her artillery belt to a more comfortable position under her satchel and turned back to Homura, trusting that he had already predicted today’s events.
After some time passed, the green glow began to fade, and Homura lowered his arms. “The first stage is complete,” Shien proclaimed, “It’s time to move to stage two.”
“So do I have to keep standing here or what,” Xenon complained.
“You certainly could,” replied Tsuki, “it’d keep you out of everyone else’s way.” Xenon clicked his tongue, scowling at her.
“You’re free to move now,” Shien interrupted, “These scriptures have served their purpose well.”
“Alright,” commented Xenon, leaving his spot on the pentagram. He let out a loud groan as he stretched. “Aw man, I’ve gotta kink. Next time, can we do some jumping jacks or something?”
“What, getting sore in your old age?”
“Shut it, Tsuki,” Xenon barked, lifting a closed fist in Tsuki’s direction as if he were prepared to leap across the room and punch her. Tsuki glared at him, the lid of a pouch already flipped open on her belt as she prepared to defend herself.
“Settle down, you two,” Homura stated, “we’re all moody because we have been anxious for this day for centuries. Let’s not screw it up by bickering with one another and save our energies for the big fight.” Xenon and Tsuki’s demeanor changed as they relaxed their bodies, bringing their focus back to the mission.
Tsuki suddenly felt a void in the air, that threatening presence from within the tower earlier was gone. She looked around the room, wondering who or what within the tower that sensation could have belonged to.
“Are you alright,” Shien asked her. Tsuki snapped her head at him, almost shocked.
“Could the others not sense that,” Tsuki wondered to herself, “there’s no way. Or perhaps they are just that confident with the final battle that whoever that demonic aura came from didn’t worry them at all.” Tsuki nodded her head lightly in response to his question.
Shien let out a light sigh before turning his gaze back to the pentagram. “Things appear to be going on schedule,” he commented, “The energy to generate a new Heaven and Earth is coalescing outside the tower. All we need now is the key to open the new world.”
“Our precious little monkey,” Homura commented.
“Indeed,” replied Shien.
“Then I guess we’ll just have to go and get him, now won’t we,” Tsuki stated.
“Right,” Homura replied.
“I sense Sanzo and Goku are nearby,” Tsuki commented as she walked to Homura’s side. “It appears they have decided to separate.”
“They are close,” Shien replied. Homura turned as he gestured at Tsuki. He cradled the back of her head as he leaned down, touching his forehead to hers.
“To the end,” he whispered to her. Tsuki gently placed her hand to his forearm, her eyes softly closing as she smiled. Xenon and Shien said nothing, letting the two have their moment. “Yes.” Homura broke contact and firmed his features, staring at the wide open stairwell in the floor in anticipation. “Come,” he continued, “let’s go meet them halfway.”
•
Homura led the way, the three of them followed him to one of the lower floors. Once they reached the desired floor, Homura sat in a high chair on the far side of the wall with a long rug which reached the doors. It was determined, in silence, this was where they would meet Sanzo and Goku.
The doors suddenly burst open. “We’re exactly where we wanna be,” Sanzo proclaimed.
“Homura,” Goku cried out.
“At last they’ve arrived,” commented Shien.
“Welcome, gentlemen,” Tsuki chimed in.
“What brings you here,” asked a sarcastic Xenon. Sanzo firmed his stance on the other side of the room, glaring at the four as Hakuryuu squeed in response.
“I was told you might have something that belongs to me laying around here,” Sanzo answered.
“You mean the scripture,” Tsuki asked.
“My, my, you’re a quick one aren’t you?”
“If you want it,” Homura began, “it’s yours. Just give me Goku in return.” Goku’s eyes widened, confusion on his face at the comment. Tsuki smiled at him, it was cute how he was so ignorant of the power that resonated within his own body. The key to what they had been searching for this whole time.
Homura rose from his chair and began walking towards Sanzo. Tsuki began to follow, but Homura held a hand out to her, stopping her in her tracks as a trigger-happy Sanzo unleashed one bullet after another from his banishing gun. Homura had his barrier up which disintegrated Sanzo’s bullets upon impact, a grin pulling at the corner of his lips as Sanzo kept firing at him fruitlessly.
“As I told you before, that doesn’t work on me.”
In a desperate attempt, Sanzo aimed his banishing gun up towards a chandelier and pulled the trigger. Tsuki was impressed that he got the chain holding the chandelier on the first try. Homura was caught off guard, quickly disappearing right before the chandelier landed with a loud crash. Tsuki’s heart began to pound, she didn’t really fight with Sanzo when she first met him. He didn’t seem particularly interested since Homura wasn’t looking to kidnap Goku at the time. But in this particular situation, she could see the desperation in Sanzo's eyes and his actions, he truly cared for Son Goku.
“But you certainly do keep me on my toes,” Homura stated, re-appearing behind Sanzo. Just then, Hakuryuu let out a squee as he began to charge at Homura. Tsuki quickly teleported near Homura, snapping her Qi whip at Hakuryuu and knocking him to the wall. “Thank you, Tsuki. You need to be kept on a leash,” commented Homura, addressing the small dragon as two separate chains emerged from the wall and linked themselves around the petite frame, pinning it against the wall.
“You prick,” shouted Sanzo.
“Watch your mouth,” Tsuki spat at him, snapping her whip at him and connecting with his abdomen. Sanzo lurched forward from the impact, letting out a cry of pain at the sharp contact.
“As for you....” Homura followed up Tsuki’s attack by gripping Sanzo by the throat and hoisting him up high. Sanzo barely had a chance to choke for air before Homura threw him hard against a wall on the far side of the room, his back slamming hard against the concrete as he coughed up blood. Chains emerged from the wall, hanging Sanzo by the wrists and waist before his head drooped down, fainting from the severity of the impact.
“Cut that out,” Goku shouted. Homura was pleased with how events were unfolding. Getting Goku’s attention was just what he needed, it all became so clear to Tsuki that having Goku’s focus here, on everyone in this room right now, was the most important element.
“Might wanna take a look over here, monkey boy,” Xenon announced before firing his banishing rifle.
Tsuki leapt up into the air to avoid Xenon’s aim as he chased after Goku, hovering in midair as she glared at the redhead. “Asshole.” She retrieved a couple of small pods from her utility belt, throwing them at Goku as he continued to run and dodge the onslaught of attacks. Tsuki landed, as she stretched the length of her Qi whip, snapping it loudly against the backs on his legs.
Goku cried out in pain as he stumbled. Xenon ran to him just in time to punch Goku in the face, sending him flying across the room. Goku screamed through the air before landing hard on the ground.
“Not too rough, you two,” Shien commented, “we need him alive.”
“We’re just having a little fun,” replied Xenon. Shien glared at him, a stern look on his face. “Yeah, yeah, I know.” Xenon waved a hand in the air, brushing off his warning.
Just then, Shien unleashed both of his Qi whips, launching them at Goku who had gotten his staff out just in time to avoid being hit. The whips wrapped tightly around Goku’s staff as he pulled against Shien, not about to leave himself defenseless. Tsuki took the opening and snapped one whip at him, connecting with the back of his neck.
“Ow! You bitch,” he shouted. Tsuki giggled, watching as he continued to struggle against Shien. Xenon let out a loud scream as he was in mid-attack from above, looking to kick Goku in the head. Goku let out a grunt as he got enough slack to lift his staff up to block Xenon’s attack and strike the length of his staff against his abdomen. Xenon was launched into the air, dropping his gun in the process.
“Xenon,” Tsuki shouted as she watched him fly through the air. Goku looked over his shoulder to see Tsuki running up behind him. Goku repositioned his staff to have each end pointed both in front of him and behind him.
“Staff, extend,” he screamed. Just as he commanded, his staff extended to an incredible length and at such speed that one end connected with Tsuki in the abdomen, the other against Shien before either of them had a chance to evade the attack. Shien stumbled back a bit, losing his grip on his whips while Tsuki flew backward and let out a cry of pain as she landed against the wall.
Xenon landed face down, grunting in pain as he looked back over his shoulder. “He...he’s become...”
“He’s become much stronger than before,” Shien finished. Goku turned back towards Homura, Tsuki saw a look of fire in Goku’s eyes that she hadn’t seen before. She had seen determination cross Goku’s face in the past, but this was something more. He was determined to fight to the death.
Homura stood with his flame sword drawn, smiling at Goku, pleased with his growth. Tsuki picked herself up and flipped open another pouch on her belt. There was suddenly a familiar presence within the tower, no, it was a small group of demons. “Shit,” Tsuki thought to herself, “why is he here? Of all the things that could go wrong. Damnit, Dokugakuji!”
“That’s good,” Homura commended Goku. Tsuki’s mind snapped back to the situation at hand. She couldn’t afford to be distracted while they were so close. “That strength is just what I’m after.”
Tsuki noticed the Sanzo priest stirring, finally regaining consciousness as he lifted his head, his voice roughly calling out to Goku’s name. Tsuki walked over to him, standing defiantly in front as if she were daring Goku to attempt to lunge at her past Homura. Goku returned her look with a fierce glare and she couldn’t wait for the fight to come.
