Tohru sat on the steps of the Dojo watching Nikkou as he worked to grasp the basics of Karate. She lightly laid a hand on her growing belly. Tohru and the baby started a game. She’d put her hand on her belly and whisper “Come on, baby”, and the baby, every time, would kick her hand.
“You either look like you swallowed a light bulb or are going to throw up.” Rin sat next to her, holding Tama as close as she could manage. Over a month for the both of them in the ICU and for Rin it was torture, but she was willing to over look it because she got to see Tama everyday. The nurses thought she was rejecting him when she didn’t hold him right away. It was difficult to explain… she wasn’t ignoring him. And she couldn’t exactly tell them she was under a curse. That would have only resulted in a trip to the mental ward. With a little trial and… horse in the hospital room, she diverged a way to hold and feed him without transforming. It really was nice.
The horse looked closer at Tohru, “Maybe both.”
“I’m fine. At this point, I get a bit of a break from the sickness.”
Rin looked over at Kyo who now stood behind Nikkou, moving his arms into the right position. “It must be nice.” She sat for a moment longer. “How did you manage to take care of him for so long by yourself?”
“I had my friends to help me. I wouldn’t have been able to do it by myself.”
“You own your own business, right?”
“Yeah, I started right after Nikkou was born. My friends Hana and Uo would watch him while I worked.”
“How did you survive without working for nine months?” Rin asked.
“Hatori gave me money to live off of until I could work. I didn’t even ask for it. I just went to my bank one day and there it was. I called Hatori and he said to consider it a gift.”
“That was nice of him.” She looked down at the baby in her arms then back to Tohru, “At least this time you don’t have to work.”
“I still am. I’m the owner after all.” Tohru lightly rested her hands on her belly. Without prompt, the baby kicked her right palm dead center. The women sat in silence for a while watching Nikkou practice forms with Kyo. Haru sat next to Rin sometime later taking the baby from her.
“It’s cold today, are you sure you should be out?” His brow wrinkled with worry.
“I’m fine. You know, I’ve been out of the hospital for the better part of three months and I’m not invalid.” Rin looked annoyed. They had been arguing about this since the day she left the emergency room. “I wrapped Tama in an extra blanket if you didn’t notice.” She motioned to the baby.
“Okay, I’m worrying too much… I just don’t want anything to happen to you.”
Rin sighed, “We’ll be fine.” But her heart sank when he said that. The doctors had been baffled that Tama survived the night, let alone the month. But, they pointed out, his lungs where very sensitive and he may develop asthma. “I’ll take him home if you prefer.” She said at last.
“No, no… it’s okay. I like that you’re here.” Haru held the baby closer, listening to him breath in a nice even rhythm.
“Alright that’s probably enough for today.” Kyo said. He and Nikkou bowed to each other and joined the little bevy on the porch.
“Are you enjoying the Karate training?” Tohru asked her son.
“Yeah… it’s cool. Tama looks a lot healthier.” The boy looked at the baby.
“I think all of the fresh air is doing him good,” Rin looked at Haru. He just shrugged and smiled at her.
“May I hold him?” Nikkou asked sitting down next to his mother. Haru carefully placed the baby in the boy’s arms. He stayed close to monitor. Nikkou looked down at the baby. His hair began to grow; soft black fuzz and his dark gray eyes stared intently at the older boy. Tama reached a small hand up to Nikkou and smiled. A small smile touched the boy’s lips before he realized everyone was looking at him. He handed the baby back to Haru and stormed into the house. Tohru struggled her way up to follow him leaving Kyo, Haru and Rin.
“That was cute.” Haru said in a flat voice.
Rin quirked the corner of her mouth, “He’ll be a good brother.”
Inside Tohru walked through the house looking for her son. He was found starring at the contents of the refrigerator. She stood behind him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah fine” He said without looking at her. “I just don’t like being watched. You know that.” They stayed like that for a while longer before Kyo rushed in and grabbed the phone. Before Tohru could ask what was going on he dialed a number.
“Hatori, Tama’s having trouble breathing… Yes, at the dojo…” Was all Tohru heard as she rushed outside. Rin sat perfectly still while Haru held the gasping child. The horse’s face was carefully blank and her eyes stayed trained on her son.
“Hatori’s on his way,” Kyo looked at the infant. Once again panic hit his stomach as he thought about Tohru and the baby. Maybe if he explained things to her, she would consider letting him tying her to their bed. Kyo shook the idea out of his head as Hatori pulled up. Haru handed the baby to the doctor and went to sit with Rin. Hatori Checked the baby quickly took Tama inside. The adults were quiet until Hatori came back, baby in arm.
“I need to take him with me.” He said simply. The doctor handed Tama back to his father. Hatori went to the trunk of his car and picked up a car seat. Haru looked down at his son gasping for breath. He lightly pulled the blanket away from Tama’s chin. Hatori came back into view. Without a word he took the baby from the ox. With one last nod and a, “I’ll call as soon as I know anything.” He left the four adults standing on the steps of the Dojo. Hatori looked at them in the rear view mirror and said a silent prayer that everything would be okay.
