Astharoshe: Yeah, Cen's got an attitude problem. He's cute though, so it's okay. Enjoy!
DarkCrusnikMagician: Of course I mad them Crusniks! Little babies with wings and fangs! How could I resist? ;) We'll find out what Cain knows and what's up with him very soon, don't worry. We're going to get things moving now because I'm out of school and i don't want my story fizzling out in the action department. Abel and Alex will be experiencing more angst in the upcoming chapters, so be prepared ;)
winterfrau: Yeah, I figured Abel's relationship to the Alex's kids would result in varying levels of awkwardness, but he's really trying.
Chapter 14: Late Night Reading
Alex wandered into one of the main study halls, looking down each dark row for her son. It was late and she was trying to round them up to take them to bed. While Cendricus and Aurora had been quite enthusiastic about her being with them nearly every hour of the day, Ilarius had taken it quite the opposite. She knew he felt stifled by being together all day everyday and constantly being bombarded by his brother’s overwhelming presence. So, when he begged her for some alone time in the study, her guilt won out over her paranoia and she let him retreat to a peaceful wing of the Vatican. She found him pouring over a few volumes and he smiled as she came up to him.
“Is it time for bed already?” She smiled at him and nodded, coming to run her hand through his hair. He looked so much like his father it was uncanny. The only difference were his eyes. She saw her own eyes looking back at her and sometimes looking at her children gave her the feeling of looking into a mirror. She kissed the top of his head and sat next to him.
“What are you reading?”
“I’m reading some of the AX’s old mission logs.” Alex’s eyebrows raised almost into her hairline as she considered her son.
“How did you get these?”
“Lady Catherina allowed me to look at them.” Alex groaned.
“I think I will have to have a talk with Mother.”
“Don’t worry. She kept the volume about your capture. She said that wasn’t for a son to read about his Mother.”
“Good.” Alex fell silent, watching her son gather the volumes in a neat stack.
“Mother, does it bother you that I call Abel ‘Father’?” Alex smiled a little sadly at her son.
“No, love, he is your Father.”
“Do you think it’s disrespectful to Dad?” Alex pulled her son close, cradling him against her chest. She felt no small measure of relief when he responded by wrapping his arms around her and nuzzling into her neck.
“Hugue was a good Father to you boys and he was a good man. He loved you with all his heart, just as surely as if you were his own, but he wasn’t your biological Father. He knew that. He knew that Abel would have been a good Father if he’d been given the chance.”
“Why wasn’t he?” Alex sighed quietly, fighting back a tide of tears.
“I’ve told you love, I was captured and then I left the AX.”
“So you just left Father?”
“No, dearest, it wasn’t like that. I didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to leave.”
“Then he said something or did something terrible, didn’t he?”
“Love, don’t do this. Not now.” Ilarius pushed away from her, his expression set in a resolute mask.
“I want to know what happened. I want to know about my Father and I want to know why Dad had to take his place.” Alex sighed, burying her face in her hands.
“Cendricus’s Father sent me back to the AX. He abandoned me and Abel came to the rescue. They are brothers, twins, and their hatred for one another runs deep. When Abel found out what happened while I was being held, he... didn’t take the news too well. His reaction was so strong, so angry.... I didn’t know what else to do but leave. I hated the looks he gave me.”
“So he drove you away?”
“It wasn’t completely his fault, he never got the whole story. I never got to tell him that I was carrying you two.”
“And Dad just swooped in to rescue you?”
“Yes.”
“No wonder you didn’t want anything to do with Father.” Alex turned to her son, taking in his look of dejection.
“Abel is a good man. We had a huge case of miscommunication and we are working on it. My biggest regret is that you and your brother didn’t get to know him better. Hugue did a magnificent job, but it was wrong of me to deny Abel his time with you.”
“What about Cendricus’s Father?” Alex swallowed, tears rising in her eyes.
“I was nothing to him. I was merely a pawn in his plan to hurt your Father anyway he could. The only good thing that came of being with him was your brother.”
“I’m sorry, Mom. I shouldn’t have pushed.” Ilarius wrapped himself around his Mother and she held him tight.
“Just promise me you will forgive your Father and never forget your Dad. Abel really wants to spend time with you and your brother.”
“I will try my best to get away from Cendricus so I can see Father.”
“I’ll talk to Cendricus about his attitude toward the poor man. I think Abel should be nominated for sainthood for taking it so well.” The two chuckled and Alex rose, helping her son carry the heavy leather bound books to the room the children shared. Before they reached the door to their room Alex leaned over and kissed her son on the cheek.
“No matter what happens, I love you, Ilarius.” The boy smiled and nuzzled into her shoulder a little awkwardly.
“I love you too, mom.”
Alex opened the door and was promptly assaulted by the high pitched squeal of her daughter. Sweeping the room quickly her eyes fell to the beds, where Cendricus and Tres were tickling Aurora mercilessly. Alex breathed a ragged sigh, smiling as Ilarius dashed off to join the fray. She watched as her daughter launched all three boys off of her, sending them flying in various directions to all land on their rumps. Alex laughed as her daughter stood on the bed in a towering temper, her hair tousled and her eyes glowing bright green, her fangs protruding. Aurora surveyed the damage and grinned at them all smugly.
“I win!” Everyone in the room burst into laughter as Aurora hopped off the bed and scampered over to her mother. “Did you see? I even threw Tres!”
“Yes, Chérie, I saw! I’m so proud of you! That will come in handy when you’re older and all the boys are vying for your attention.” Alex winked at her daughter, but realized her error when Aurora’s smile faded somewhat. “Chérie, forgive me.”
“It’s okay, Mama.” Alex kneeled and gathered her tiny daughter to her chest and held her, feeling wretched for stumbling onto such a sore subject like am imbecile. She nuzzled her daughter’s ear and whispered to her. “I think Tres would probably blow any would be suitors away though, so you wouldn’t have to go through the trouble yourself.”
“Really?” Aurora giggled, her face lighting up once more. Alex leaned in to whisper once more.
“Really, Chérie. He may be a flirt, but that’s only because he hangs around Uncle Leon too much. He loves you, Aurora, I can feel it.” Aurora turned to regard the android, considering her Mother’s words.
“I think he’d rather be with you.” Alex laughed out loud and shook her head, tsking at her daughter.
“He thinks I am beautiful, yes, and he is protective of me, often flirtatious. But I pale in comparison to my lovely daughter. He is unique in that he has the ability to last as long as you do, love. Cherish your relationship and let him decide. Do not push him away if he wants to remain at your side.”
“Oi! What are you two jabbering on about?” Cendricus sulked at being left out, but Tres’s eyes were leveled on Aurora unwaveringly.
“Hush! I’ve had about enough of your tongue lately, boy! I’m about ready to smack you.”
“You wouldn’t hit me.” Cendricus pouted and Alexandra cast him a stern look.
“Keep trying my patience and see, Little Man!” Cendricus adopted a truly hurt look, blushing in light of his Mother’s words.
“Besides, if Mom doesn’t, Lady Integra sure will!” Ilarius burst out laughing and Cendricus slugged him in the arm.
“Shut up, idiot! She always wears that face.”
“Only when you’re around, doofus.”
“All right, all right, everyone’s a damned idiot, now get to bed!” Alex smiled teasingly at her kids as they all made their way to the bathroom to brush their teeth. After everyone was changed into their pajamas and tucked into bed, Alex made her rounds, giving everyone hugs and kisses. The boys still shared a bed, neither of them willing to admit that they had trouble sleeping without the other near by. Aurora had a bed all to herself as she kicked and tossed dreadfully in her sleep. She hugged and kissed both boys, Cendricus holding on much tighter than was usual. Finally she made her way over to Aurora, chuckling at the yawn that escaped her as Alex kissed her forehead.
“Good night, my lovelies. I will see you in the morning.” Cendricus sat straight up, his brother groaning in irritation.
“You’re not staying with us tonight?”
“No, love. Uncle Tres is staying with you.”
“Yay! Uncle Tres!” Aurora sat up in bed beaming at the android, who chuckled at her brimming enthusiasm.
“Quiet down everyone, it’s bedtime!”
“Where are you going?” Alex turned back to her rebellious son, taken aback by the glare that painted his features. She shivered under the coldness of his stare and marveled how much he could look like Cain with that look painting his features.
“If you must know, I was hoping to speak with your Father.” Ilarius didn’t sit up, but she could feel his attention as surely as if he’d turned to her to listen to the conversation openly.
“He is not my Father.”
“Cendricus, that’s enough! I’m sick of hearing that phrase dropped so easily! You have no idea what Cain is like, how dangerous he is, and how little love he has for anything but himself in this world.” The room fell deathly quiet, Alexandra having never openly said his name to her son before. While Cendricus and Ilarius both knew his name, they’d learned from other sources, mainly their Aunt Seth. Alex usually referred to his as Abel’s twin or brother, thus removing him to a safe nameless distance. Alex crumpled under the weight of her son’s insistence.
“He is still my biological Father.” Alex’s instinctive retort to her son’s bullheaded remark was a terrible thing that she hated to have even thought of, and so she swallowed it.
“He is cruel, he is dangerous, and he would destroy you as soon as look at you.”
“But he has never looked at me! Doesn’t he have a right to know me, the same as Abel has a right to know Ilarius?”
“He would have a right if he hadn’t abandoned us! Do you realize that you could have been killed, and your brother, and myself when he left us in the sun? Do you realize that is what we mean to him?” Cendricus turned away from his Mother, unwilling to admit defeat with his hurt expression. Alex sighed and approached her son.
“Mother.” Cendricus leaned into her tummy and hugged her weakly.
“Do not think less of me, Cen. Abel and I have been apart for a very long time, but he has been there for me, since we lost your Dad. You are so very much like him and nothing like Cain. You have none of his cruelty, none of his hate. Can’t you give Abel a chance? He wants to get to know you.”
“Then why have you kept us separated from him for the past ten years? Why did you leave with Dad in the first place if Abel was so bloody great?” Alex sighed, hurt by her son’s words.
“This isn’t the time for this discussion. We will take time to talk about it another time, Cen, I promise. It’s bed time now.” Alex kissed her son’s forehead, pulling away to smile at him. He smiled weakly at her, letting himself flop back on the bed dramatically. The other two children were turned away, pretending to have already fallen asleep. Alex sighed heavily and turned to go, catching the look on Tres’s face.
“Sorry you had to hear all that, Tres.”
“It’s all right, Lady Alexandra.”
“Call me at the first sign of anything strange, will you?”
“Sure thing, My Lady.”
“Such a good little hotbot.” Tres chuckled nervously, running a hand through his short auburn hair. Alex leaned a little closer, lowering her voice. “You may want to spend some time with Aurora, after the boys have gone to sleep. I have a feeling she will not be sleeping much tonight.”
“As you will, My Lady.” Tres gave a slight bow and Alex kissed his cheek, swatting at his rear as she left.
“I’m glad to know my daughter has good taste.”
Tres turned and winked, flashing her a positively wicked grin. Alex laughed, making for the kitchens as Tres locked the door behind her.
