It was sort of like being in a crowded room where the din of conversation covered all intelligible sounds until it was just an indecipherable hum, but as soon as someone said your name it pricked your ears, drawing your attention. He’d felt that strange, phenomenal feeling a lot lately. It was similar to that old wives’ tale about your ears burning when you were being talked about. But who would be talking about him? Seiya was quite confident no one on Kinmokusei was talking about him, since he mostly kept to himself. And if they were he wouldn’t be feeling this way, but Sailor Star Fighter would be instead, or rather, he’d been feeling it as a ‘she’, a useful distinction in this case. He wasn’t called Seiya on Kinmokusei, except occasionally by Healer or Maker if they were trying to get his attention when he was distracted, though again, it was usually a ‘she’ that was distracted since there was no need to transform into their male personas on Kinmokusei. Not even Kakyuu ever used their male names to address them.
That left just two possible answers: either they were talking about him on Earth or he was going crazy. Seiya thought the latter was infinitely more likely. But, assuming he wasn’t crazy, why would they be talking about him on Earth, after all this time? It had been years since the Starlights and their princess had returned to their home planet. At first it was the duty of rebuilding their planet that had kept his mind from Earth. But as the years passed, it grew harder and harder to deny the truth.
It was her. He avoided thinking about the faraway blue and green planet because of her. Most of the time it was easy to curtail those thoughts and most of the ones that slipped through his careful guard were pleasant enough. But there were times; there were a few memories that haunted his nightmares. Those nightmares had been quite frequent when they’d first left, but as time passed, his subconscious had moved on to other things, the concerns of rebuilding for one. But every once in awhile, that old dream broke through: her tears on the rooftop as she cried over her missing boyfriend.
Maker and Healer could usually tell when Fighter had one of her nightmares. She would be sullen and temperamental for days at a time afterward. So, when they found her in their common sitting room that morning staring out the window, one glance told them to tread carefully. They shared a look, wondering how bad she’d be this time. They were both startled when she spoke to them voluntarily.
“Do you ever think about Earth?” Maker’s defenses rose automatically, but Healer considered the question thoughtfully before she answered.
“I suppose, every once in awhile something reminds me of our time on Earth, but I wouldn’t say I think about it often. Do you mind if I ask why you want to know? Have you had another nightmare?” Healer braced herself for a violent response.
“No.” The two other Starlights were shocked at the quiet reply, and Fighter’s only movement was to heave a deep sigh. “I’ve just been thinking about it a lot lately. I feel like…I wonder…”
“What is it?” Maker sat down, comfortable in the conversation as long as the focus stayed on Fighter.
“Well, it might sound crazy, I probably am crazy, but I get the sense that they’re talking about me there. Why would they be talking about me?” Her confusion was wrought with pain.
Separately, each Starlight pondered Fighter’s question, each wondering very different things. Fighter questioned who exactly was talking about her, refusing to let herself think it might be the one person she wanted to be talking and thinking about her. Healer speculated that the scouts on Earth might be in trouble, perhaps they were talking about Fighter because she’d been the most willing to help them when they were all on Earth. Maker couldn’t help herself from wondering, and hoping if she was honest with herself, that the scouts were talking about all of them, or that one scout in particular was talking about her.
When they met with their princess for lunch, even she noticed their distraction. When she asked them what was wrong, begging the other Starlights not to say anything with her eyes, Fighter told her it was nothing to worry about. Fighter hated burdening the princess with her problems, which were small and silly in comparison with the weight of ruling and keeping the peace of an entire planet.
But Kakyuu knew more about her beloved Starlights than they would have ever suspected, partially through her innate intuition and partially because of Healer. The silver-haired Starlight worried about her friends and took her concerns to the princess, and didn’t feel any need to keep her own feelings from the beautiful woman herself. So, that afternoon, Healer sought out her sovereign in the garden to ask her advice.
“I had hoped that the more time that passed after our return the easier it would be for them to remember our time on Earth. But, it seems to have had the opposite effect on them both.” Healer brushed a hand through her long silver hair in frustration. “Though they are less frequent, Fighter’s nightmares retain their potency, and I’m not sure what is bothering Maker as she refuses to talk about herself at all these days, though I’m quite sure it has something to do with Earth as well. This morning, Fighter asked us how often we think about Earth and Maker practically turned to stone.”
“Ah, so that is what the trouble is. And why is that thought troubling you Healer?” The Starlight’s green eyes flashed up in surprise, and then worry.
“The reason Fighter asked is because she has the feeling that they are talking about her on Earth. What if they’re in trouble again? It would only make sense that they would talk about her; Maker and I weren’t exactly helpful while we were there.” She looked down and scuffed the toe of her black boot in the dirt in embarrassment.
“Do not worry about your friends on Earth, Healer. I’m quite sure that they are safe.” She placed her hand on her guardian’s shoulder, smiling kindly. “And knowing even as little as I do about their princess and her influence on her senshi, I’m sure that they have all forgiven you for your reluctance to involve yourselves with their planet.”
“How can you be sure that they are safe? Can you contact them?” Healer’s eyes lit up at the possibility.
“I can see and speak to Sailor Moon through the incense burner I left on Earth, though I’ve never used it to speak to her so I’m not sure where she’s placed it. I suppose I could use it as a portal to transport there and ask her in person.” Healer’s heart leapt.
“Could you? Would you? Just to check on them, and make sure they’re okay, especially Usagi? I’m not sure what Fighter would do if something happened to her and we didn’t go to help her.” Kakyuu considered the request; would it help her Starlights, or hurt them to learn about life on Earth? Especially if, as she feared, life on Earth went on without memory of their visit and Fighter’s sense was just wishful thinking.
“I will. Though, I think it would be best if we did not tell the others about it until I return.” Barely hearing the request through her elation, Healer nodded in agreement, a huge smile gracing her delicate face.
