*Mochi – Sticky rice cake.
Horie hoped the train’s arrival hadn’t been delayed. He was eager to get everyone organized in Tokyo. He was never known to be a patient man. The syndicate leader killed many men in the past, merely because they irritated him when his patience was thin. He wasn't at the station to meet with his men. It was better that, the less seen together with his men, the better. He was at the station to inspect the goods that were arriving from Kyoto, and to sign the release form. The hired men would get on with delivering it to the store from there.
It didn’t take long for Horie to step up to the freight window and exchange his signature for the goods. Everything was in order, and all the crates were accounted for. It was a relief to Horie, that the train, being off schedule, didn’t mean that the rest of the day had to follow suit.
On Horie’s way out of the train station he glanced over at a couple men waiting for jinrikishas. He recognized them to be his own. The syndicate leader stood there, for a few seconds, and waited for the signal that let him know the rest of his men arrived without snags. His lead man noticed Horie, and exchanged nods at a distance. Horie was anxious to get to the shop and meet with the men. The sooner everyone found their places, the quicker the operations would start.

“*Ohayou gozaimasu,” Mitsu greeted Saitou as she opened the door and saw the tall handsome man standing before her. “Douzo,” she bowed and invited Saitou to enter. “It is always good to see you, Mr. Fujita,” Mitsu said. Her smile was contagious, as well as magnetic.
Saitou bowed, entered the room, and returned her smile. “The pleasure is all mine. It is a good omen to see beauty so early in the morning,” Saitou released the corners of his mouth in a wide grin as he sincerely appreciated Mitsu’s visual aspect.
“*Ocha, Mr. Fujita?” Mitsu offered, hoping that Saitou would sit with her awhile.
“No, thank you," the wolf replied in his usual smooth, silky voice. "I will not be staying long. I have come by to see if there is anything I can do to further assist with your business, and to find out if my information on the locations I suggested as a storefront was beneficial,” Saitou said while taking advantage of Mitsu’s radiance that was beginning to lure Saitou’s focus from the discussion topic.
It didn’t take Mitsu long to notice Saitou’s interest, and she wasted no time in taking advantage of Saitou’s vulnerability. She hid her true motives well, hoping that perhaps, it would be someone like Saitou who would deliver her from her present situation with Horie, and everything else that was going on around her. She stepped closer to Saitou, softly leaned against his tall frame, and lightly brushed his lower frontal with her hip.
“Beneficial in a significant way. I am very grateful for your help, Mr. Fujita,” Mitsu said while she made eye contact with the wolf in a flirtatious way. She gently placed her fingers upon Saitou’s firm chest, and was tempted to slide her fingers under the front of his wear, but refrained. “Hisomu-san liked your third suggestion. It turned out to be perfect for what he needs for the operation, and the layout makes my task of setting up the storefront very easy.”
“Yes, I had a feeling that would work for you since, from what I saw of it, would not need much work to refurbish that old silk shop and turn into a satisfactory fabric shop, as you originally intended,” Saitou agreed.
Saitou needed as much information as he possibly could get from Mitsu in order to size up the current situation, and also, to confirm the direction he would head in. He sensed her willingness to play for Saitou’s attention, but he wasn't so sure about her motives. Saitou was confident that it would only be a matter of time until Mitsu revealed her true intentions. Until that time Saitou decided to use her vulnerabilities as an information resource.
“That is good news,” Saitou said, and he placed his hand on top of Mitsu’s tiny, feminine fingers. He gave them a reassuring squeeze, and looked directly into her eyes to soften any defenses she may have had against his inquiries. “I am hoping that there are more than enough men to handle the details, so that you will be able to have more time for…” Saitou paused and slid his hand from Mitsu’s hand down her arm and rested upon her shoulder; and added, “…for you.”
“Yes, I’m sure the fifteen men arriving today will be assigned their duties soon. I am supposed to meet Hisomu-san at the storefront.” Mitsu slid her hand up from Saitou’s chest and gently embraced his face in her tiny hand, and then she asked, “Perhaps Fujita-san would care to visit me when there is more time?”
“Hmn,” Saitou nodded. “You should not keep Mr. Horie waiting. I will pay a visit to the storefront at a later time and offer my assistance to him as well.”
“The only help that I am aware of that maybe needed, would be a driver for the carriage Hisomu-san is purchasing today. We’re not planning on leaving the city for awhile, so he mentioned that we would make more use of a carriage, rather than depending on a jinrikisha. Besides that, Hisomu-san’s two assistants, who are his main men, would accompany him as he travels, and that would be difficult to do in a jinrikisha.” Mitsu giggled and added, “There is no way that a man like you should drive a carriage.”
Saitou took Mitsu’s hand in his and bowed, “Until next time.”
Mitsu smiled and returned his bow. “I shall be waiting for that time, Mr. Fujita.”
Saitou immediately headed for his carriage and was off to Cho’s place in no time. Saitou knew better than to think that Cho would get to the police station any earlier than his usual tardy clock in. The morning barely got started, and Saitou was already pleased at the way the first couple of hours of the day’s work was going.

“I don’t believe that damn narrow eyed wolf,” Sano complained to himself as he stretched out under the heavy futon. “He left, without even so much as a goodbye! Not even a blossom next to my pillow! I gave him something special last night, damn it!”
On the other hand of feeling a little neglected and taken for granted, Sano felt very contented just lying in Saitou’s bed. He thought about the great night they shared together, which made him to blush. “Damn, I’m truly not virgin anymore! Am I supposed to be happy about something like that? Or, do I cry, like the couple of girls whom I stolen their virginity from” Sano laughed out loud when he realized how idiotic his thoughts were. "Hell, I don’t blame those girls for crying. If it felt anything like what I felt when Saitou first entered me... shit I had tears in my eyes too! Fuck! It hurt to hell!”
He rolled over lazily, and made his way closer to the edge of the bed. “Mmmmm,” Sano whispered as he recalled the events of his blissful night. “It hurt sooo good.” He let out a big, deep sigh and slid his hand down to give his 'morning stretch' a squeeze.
“Man, I need to piss!”
Sano sat up in bed and looked around the room. Still amused with talking to himself, he went on, as if he was talking to Saitou this time. “Wow, Saitou, you sure as hell collect some really strange things!” Sano noticed the fine paintings on Saitou’s wall, the little china knick-knacks on the shelves and show cases. “Don’t worry, I won’t break anything…” Sano chuckled. “Damn, I bet you’ve thought about that already!”
“Shit, I’m hungry. I wonder what Saitou has laying around to eat.” Sano flipped himself out of bed and strutted around the place nude as a newborn baby. The very first place Sano headed for was the kitchen, of course, even though Sano’s bladder felt like it was about to explode. “Ahhh, ocha is waiting, and, oh... here’s some *mochi. Now I’m really living! But first, I got to take a pee!”
Sano slid the back door open and stepped outside to relieve himself. The cool air caressed Sano’s sensitive part, which again, reminded him of the night he had with Saitou. “Yeeow!” Sano squealed, as if frozen water was thrown on his lap. “I must have really worked this baby last night,” he snickered.
After he reached up to the heavens for a full body stretch, Sano decided was time to keep loyal to his obligations at the Kamiya Dojo, which meant, chores! After all, the thought of Kaoru’s bokken over his head was a sure thing to happen if Sano slacked off this early in his stay at the dojo.

“Fujita-sir, I was finishing my ocha and fixen’ to head on out to the station. What's going on?” Cho said as he motioned at Saitou to enter his double room apartment.
“Forget going to the office,” Saitou said not bothering to enter the little apartment.
Cho downed the last of his ocha and looked up at Saitou with his habitual slight squint in his one eye. “Huh? Are you saying that I’m finally getting out of that god-forbidding place, and I'm actually gonna to do something worth living for?”
Saitou took advantage of standing outside of Cho’s door, lit a cigarette, and let the smoke slowly drift past his lips. “I want you to get yourself ‘in’ Horie’s operation. I was informed that Horie is in need of a cab-driver. He is purchasing a carriage, with a team, as we speak. It does not seem that he will be using any of the men from Kyoto to do the task of driving. If you can secure that job, it is a sure way of getting info on their connections.”
Cho placed his hand on his hip, and with the other hand, he gestured Saitou with a thumb’s up. “I can handle that. I already have a foot in the door and I have a feelin’ that purty little Mitsu thinks I’m irresistible, so she’ll put in a good word for me with Horie.”
Saitou looked at Cho from the side of his narrow eyes, and warned the overly confident man from Kyoto. “If you favor your balls, I suggest you keep your distance from that woman. Horie has it in mind to keep her all to himself.”
“Hell, I met that skinny, uptight, syndicate snob, the same time I met Mitsu, and he don’t seem like he’d be anything to worry about. Besides, with my super-fast gifted abilities, I would make him eat dirt even before he knew what hit him,” Cho said in his low samurai warrior tone.
Saitou folded his arms in front of himself, leaned up against the door frame, and shook his head. Disapprovingly, he said, “It seems to me that you have forgotten about having that same attitude when you thought you could take on Kenshin Himura, the battousai. As I recall, he had you eat barrels of dirt.”
“Oh that,” Cho shrugged his shoulders. “Well, we all needed a portion of humble rice once in awhile. I guess it was my time.”
“Get in there, get information and keep me informed. Do not take any chances with Horie's woman, or you’ll have me to answer to. Believe me, I will not be as gentle as Himura,” Saitou harshly warned Cho again. The wolf turned around and left Cho to think about it.
“Damn that Saitou,” Cho muttered to himself when he was sure Saitou was out of hearing range. “He’s as scary as my worst nightmare—times a hundred! I sure as hell better watch my step around the guy.”

“Did you sleep well last night, Kenshin?” Kaoru asked as she poured him some ocha from the old teapot.
Kenshin smiled, but avoided looking directly at Kaoru. He slowly takes a sip of his steaming brew and nodded. “Yes Miss Kaoru, that I did.”
Kenshin, in turn, poured Kaoru some of the hot liquid as well. Then and asked her the same, but still resisted any eye contact with her.
“Kenshin…” Kaoru’s sweet voice bade Kenshin’s attention, “Is there something wrong? You seem distant this morning.”
He took a deep breath and looked up into Kaoru’s big brown eyes. Kenshin saw the unmistakable concern concern that she had for him written all over her face. The last thing Kenshin wanted to do was worry Kaoru. It was because of him that Kaoru had to endure all sorts of drama in the past. Kenshin desired to keep life as peaceful as possible for Kaoru.
“Miss Kaoru, everything is fine, please do not worry yourself,” Kenshin tried to reassure her. “Aoshi’s visit caused me to remember a few things he and I had gone through in the past, and I allowed my thoughts to rest upon them, that is all.”
“Yes, I’m glad the two of you found peace even though it did take something like fighting Shishio to bring the both of you together,” Kaoru said as she cringed at the very thought of the whole event. It all seemed like a life time ago.
“I had no intention of fighting Aoshi, but it all worked out for the good when Aoshi realized he needed to fight the demons that were within himself instead of battling with me. Sometimes, fighting an inner enemy can be a greater battle to conquer than it is fighting against human foes,” Kenshin said in a low monotonic tone.
Kaoru tried to encourage Kenshin out of his gloomy state of mind. “For one thing, I know Misao was most grateful to you for bringing Aoshi back to the Oniwanban-shu. It was obvious she loved Aoshi very much, and she would have gone on searching for him all her life, if it weren’t for you talking some sense into him.”
“I don’t know about that, Miss Kaoru. It could very well be that Aoshi would one day come to his senses after really thinking things through, “Kenshin said, again resisting much of any eye contact with Kaoru.
Kaoru poured more ocha for the both of them as they heard footsteps in the other part of the house.
“Good morning Himura-san, Kaoru-san.” Aoshi bowed as he entered the gathering room where Kenshin and Kaoru sat.
“Come! Sit with us Aoshi-san,” Kenshin motioned to the shinobi to take up a zabuton.
“Yes, douzo! I kept your breakfast warm, just in case you’d come back in time,” Kaoru said, and excused herself to get Aoshi’s tray from the kitchen.
Aoshi sat beside Kenshin and looked into the ex-hitokiri's violet eyes. He noticed right away that Kenshin had a restless night after the two of them retired for the night. Kenshin returned the gaze and saw basically the same in Aoshi’s blues.
Kaoru entered the room and knelt directly in front of Aoshi, “Douzo Aoshi-san.” Kaoru set Aoshi’s breakfast before him, poured some freshly made ocha into his teacup, and set the hot teakettle down between the men.
“Now if you two men will excuse me, I need to run into town to do my errands before the day gets ahead of me.” Kaoru picked up her breakfast dishes and the empty teapot. Before she exited the gathering room, she turned to Kenshin and said, “Please tell Sano that the bathwater needs to be emptied and replaced with fresh water. Oh, yes... and the fire wood under the bath needs kindling too.”
“I’ll remind him to tend to all of that, Miss Kaoru, that I will!” Kenshin smiled and watched Kaoru exit the room once again.
Kenshin and Aoshi sat together in silence for a few minutes, both contemplating on what to say next. It wasn't too long until the silence was disturbed and Sano appeared through the door Kaoru just exited.
“I’m starving! I am so glad the Lil’Missy kept a portion waiting for me!”
“Good morning Sano!” Kenshin greeted the cheerful ex-fighter. “Ever since I have known you, Sano, you always seem to be starving.”
Aoshi glanced up from his breakfast and greeted Sano as well. “Sanosuke-san, it is always good to see you.”
“Thanks Aoshi, likewise, I’m sure.” Sano sat facing the two men and sat his breakfast before him.
Kenshin poured the ocha for Sano and then asked, “Did you have a good night? I noticed you weren’t in when Aoshi and I went to our rooms.”
“I didn’t get in until just a few minutes ago,” Sano spoke as he tried to chew his food at the same time. “I spent the night at Saitou’s.”
Kenshin and Aoshi both stopped eating and look at each other. Sano, oblivious to the other nonverbal communication between the two men, kept right on gulping down the food.
Looking back over to Sano, Kenshin chuckled and teased, “It looks like you worked up a sizable appetite, Sano! Must have been a great night that you had.”
Sano swallowed a mouthful, then washes it down with some ocha. He then realized that the two men sitting across of him were fixed on his every move. “Maybe I should charge admission for the show,” Sano said, feeling kind of uncomfortable. "What the hell is going on?”
“Nothing is going on, Sano. It is obvious that you are very happy and hungry,” Kenshin amusingly laughed as he noticed some rice at the corner of Sano’s mouth.
Aoshi grinned and glanced over at Kenshin. The shinobi admired the ex-hitokiri who had become a legend in their time. Aoshi was finding himself wanting very much to be in Kenshin’s life, but then again... What would become of the people who counted on them? Kaoru and Misao definitely made it obvious to the men that they were willing to spend the rest of their lives as soul mates. Kenshin lived in Tokyo, while Aoshi, well, lived in Kyoto. There were many obstacles that would be a hindrance to a relationship that reached beyond friendship.
A rap at the door in the other room had Kenshin excuse himself and exit the gathering room. He quickly returned with Saitou in tow.
Kenshin led Saitou into the gathering room and offered him a seat. “You and Aoshi can have your meeting in this room. Sano and I have much to do around the dojo,” Kenshin said, and began gathering up his breakfast tray.
Sano sprang to his feet at the sight of Saitou entering the room. “Saitou!” Sano greeted the wolf in his usual child-like excitement.
“Sanosuke, Aoshi,” Saitou bowed. He then noticed Sano’s blush on his cheeks. A part of Saitou desired that Sano had more self-control when it came to being out in public with him, but the other part of him wanted to take Sano in his arms and greet him as two lovers would, who were eager to express their affection for one another.
“Sano,” Kenshin called as he bumped into the obviously infatuated young man with his tray in hand. “We should let Saitou and Aoshi have their meeting.”
“Huh? Oh, yeah…okay, let me get my tray!” Sano snapped his focus away from Saitou long enough to realize that everyone was looking at him being entranced by Saitou. Sano quickly picked up his breakfast, and then followed Kenshin out the door.
Leaving Saitou and Aoshi to their meeting, Kenshin tidied up the kitchen, while Sano made more ocha for the meeting.
“You know Sano, it is apparent that your feelings for Saitou surpasses friendship, that it does!” Kenshin stopped to watch Sano’s reaction.
Sano smiled his biggest, and then confessed. “I can’t help being obvious. I just lose myself whenever I’m near the guy. Kenshin, I mean, this is really happening to me!” Sano made a fist and raised it in front of him, and continued to say, “If anyone were to tell me that I would fall for a guy, I’d beat the shit out of that person! But now I don’t know what to say for myself. I’m finally happy and life’s too short not to enjoy it.”
“Even if it does mean others will find out about it?” Kenshin questioned Sano.
Sano sighed, “Hell, I wish I could tell the whole world about this. Shit, you have no idea how hard it is not to pinch the wolf’s ass when he passes near me, but I know it is for the best not to be too obvious about the relationship. It’s like you said, Kenshin, ‘times are changing and so are the way people view things.’ Especially things as complicated as this.”
Sano looked over at Kenshin, who seemed to be a million miles away. “Well, I bet this ‘thing’ between Saitou and I sure makes you happy that you and Kaoru are the opposite sex, huh? No complication there!”
Kenshin laughed nervously and squinted as he shrugged his shoulders, not really knowing how to respond to what Sano just said.

“Hey there purty lady!” Cho said quite loudly as he swaggered into the store front where Mitsu was setting up the back display area for the fabric that was about to be delivered from the train station.
When Mitsu overcame being startled, she giggled and greeted the man with the Kyoto accent. “Cho-san! You are here to look at fabric?”
“Nah, I have no use for fabric, although I only wish I had steady income to afford such luxuries,” Cho said and looked up to the ceiling while he batted his eyes like he was dreaming.
“You are very funny!” Mitsu giggled even more. “I'd imagine a man like you would already have a well paying job, as talented as you seem to be.”
“Well that’s so kind of you to say, but I’m afraid jobs these days are too few. As a matter of fact, I’ve been looking here and there hoping something would turn up before this handsome guy turns into a bag of bones from lack of nourishment.” Cho pointed to his sunken cheeks as he dropped his jaw and sucked the side of his mouth in.
“Ahhh, I can see that you are poverty stricken. Perhaps I could find out from Mr. Horie if he still needs a carriage driver?” Mitsu suggested while being delighted with Cho’s performance.
“WhooHaaw!” Cho yelled and did a 360 spin in the air at the same time. “I sure would appreciate it if you’d do that for this poor ole soul. I would forever be indebted to you, Mitsu!”
“Fine then, I will speak with Horie-san about this matter as soon as he returns,” Mitsu nodded.
Without warning, and as if by coincidence, Horie entered the store followed by a few men behind him who were carrying in the crates of supplies. “Stack the crates here,” Horie pointed to an empty corner in the shop’s back room.
“Hisomu-san, I have taken it upon myself to hire a driver for you, knowing that you are very focused on attending to the important matters,” Mitsu informed Horie during the hectic delivery.
Horie looked at Cho and immediately started to laugh out loud. “You are talking about this comically enhanced person?” Horie asked finding humor in her suggestion.
“That is the exact reason why I think Cho-san would be perfect for the job. The work can be so stressing at times, and Cho-san has a gift in bringing humor when needed.” Mitsu tried her best to convince Horie.
“Hmn, maybe you are right,” Horie saw the potential in Mitsu’s suggestion.
“Cho, the carriage and team have been purchased, go and tend to them. You now work for me as my personal driver, agreed?”
Cho bowed, “Yes, agreed Horie-sir, your wish is my command.”
Horie, being in the good mood laughed at Cho and said, “Keep that attitude Cho and you will have much of a lot! I have made up my mind to like you,“ Horie laughed out cheerfully again, but this time he was surely to be heard from across the roadway.
“Welcome Cho-san,” Mitsu bowed.
