PART 4
Winter gave way to spring and five months had passed since D had left Katherine in Haven with nothing but her sorrow for company. As he neared the town of Carrillo he suddenly sensed something. Yes, that was her presence! He could feel it as strongly as if she was standing right before him. His blood that now flowed through her veins called out to him. And he remembered her saying once that her aunt had left her a house here.
“Will you go see her?” his left hand asked sarcastically.
“You know I will.”
“I guess I better disappear for a while, then. Though I do like the feel of her soft skin,” the voice cackled and D closed his fist on the sound.
Katherine rose slowly from her garden. A strange look came over her face. “What’s the matter, miss?” old Betty May was on her knees planting carrots. She had been Aunt Margaret’s caretaker for years, now she helped her mistress’s niece.
“Betty May,” Katherine spoke slowly and carefully. “Find John and go to his house for a few hours. I have a visitor.”
“Miss Katherine, is it…”
“Go please,” Katherine brushed the dirt from the front of her dress. She didn’t wait for her servant to leave before she ran and washed her face and hands. Then she walked out to where she felt his presence.
He rounded a bend in the path to Carrillo and there she was. She wore a faded yellow working dress and had her hair up in pins. He rode up to where she stood and stared down at her, drinking up her beauty. Neither spoke for a moment. Finally, when Katherine thought she might burst. “Hello, D.”
“Hello Katie. Are you well?”
She smiled a secret smile, “As well as can be expected under the circumstances.” He assumed she meant her brother’s death and previous thoughts of reaching down and kissing her vanished. She took his horse’s reins and led him down the path to the house that previously belonged to her aunt. It was a one-story, well-built home with a wraparound porch and a vegetable garden in the back. He saw a man and woman walking along a different path toward town but didn’t comment on it.
“Will you stay long?” Katherine seemed sort of nervous.
“As long as you wish me here.” He dismounted and took the reins from her. She looked away and led him to a small barn with two stalls. She poured water in a trough and took the saddle off the horse. “I can do that.” D took the saddle from her as she grabbed some brushes. She handed him one and moved to brush the gelding as it drank. “Have you had any urges?” D asked.
“For blood you mean? No, not human blood, though I dare say I enjoy my meat very rare these days,” she grinned. They brushed quietly for a few minutes; neither uncomfortable in the other’s presence. A cool breeze drafted in and grabbed a few locks of Katherine’s hair from their pins. D stepped over and gently pushed the hairs behind her ear. Their eyes locked and she felt the old feeling well up in her chest. The feeling she had been trying to push away for months. Yet it persevered.
“Let me show you the house,” she whispered a bit breathlessly. She dropped her brush and took his hand. He walked a bit behind her and noticed that she had gained a little weight. She had more meat on her thighs and bottom. Of course, staying home and farming was a much different lifestyle than being a Hunter. She had no need to stay in shape. She led him inside and closed the door. He took off his hat and leaned his sword against the wall. Her house smelled of freshly cut flowers and sunshine. The silence was unnerving and he was finding it hard to breathe around her. “You stay here alone?”
“I have some people that help me around the house. I sent them to town so we can talk in privacy,” she took his other hand in hers and faced him.
“I’ve missed you, Katherine.”
“And I you. More than I realized.”
He could stand it no longer: he took her in his arms and kissed her. She gave in, kissing him deeply and throwing her arms around his neck. Then, she suddenly flung him against the wall. He was confused until he saw the look in her eye. Mad passion.
“I want you.”
She kissed him forcibly and this new behavior aroused him. She unclasped his cape and dropped it to the floor. He pulled her hair down and grasped it in his fists. She smelled so lovely, like the earth she toiled over. He kissed her mouth, her chin, her neck, and ripped her dress open for more, more. She pulled him on top of her on a table; the glass teapot resting there went crashing to the floor. She was wild, on fire. His flame of desire was turning into a bonfire as well. Her fingers worked magic on his clothes and he picked her up and threw her back against the wall and used his own fingers under her skirts to bring out the moans he longed to hear. He loved the sound. She stroked his manhood and he cried out in pleasure. That only drove her wilder. “Please, please my love,” she pleaded in his ear. How could he say no when she asked so sweetly?
He lay on the bed and watched her brush her hair. She was so beautiful. Her skin still glistened from the sweat of their lovemaking. He suddenly sensed something he had been too caught up in desire to see before. “Are you…”
“Yes,” she smiled her secret smile again. “I carry your child in my womb, my love.” He was so astounded he leapt to his feet.
“Mine? My child? Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you try to find me?”
Katie had expected such a reaction but she gazed calmly into the mirror. “Because underneath the cold-blooded Vampire Hunter is a true gentleman. You would have rushed to take care of me and given up your life as a Hunter to settle down with us because you would feel that it was the right thing to do. But we both know that you would be miserable. You would come to resent us and I cannot have that. I would rather the child not know you than for you to resent him. That is why I no longer hunt: I am ready to give it up for my baby but I do not expect you to. We do not need you.”
D sat back down. He could see that she was battling to restrain her emotions. She wanted him here, and yet she loved him enough to think of him first. “You think that we would all be happier if I wasn’t around?”
“You know better than I what would make you happy. It is your choice to make. But you cannot make it here and now. Let us not discuss this.”
“How can we not discuss it? I am responsible for this!”
She stood and came in front of him, resting his head on her already slightly protruding belly. “You cannot make such a decision while you are here with me. My presence will influence you too much. This is something you must contemplate while you are alone and without distractions.”
Worries plagued him. What had he done? Here he had impregnated a human woman, just like his father, the vampire that he despised most! But Katherine was no regular girl, she had vampire traits all her own. She could understand and love this child better than any normal human could. Here was another dhampir, just like him, except maybe more powerful because of Katherine’s blood.
He was a Hunter; that was the only life he was meant for. Wasn’t it? It was too much information at once. She was right, he could not think about this while her warm body was pressed against him. He felt the child move within her and a new feeling welled in his chest: delight. He wrapped his arms around her and held her.
The sun set and the air grew chilly. Crickets sang in the fields. They stood on the porch watching the night fall around them. Katherine’s hair was still down but she now wore a dark robe. She spotted Betty May in the distance walking toward them. “I take it that’s my cue to leave.” D placed his hat on his head and kissed his woman just once, very softly. He headed for the barn but her voice stopped him midway.
“Whatever decision you make, I still love you and I will not disillusion the child about you. You can see us whenever you please. Just do not feel obligated to be here.” He merely nodded without turning and continued on. She was silent as she watched him gallop into the dark, her sometimes lover and eternal friend. Betty May stepped up beside her. “Who was your guest, Miss Katherine?” Katie grinned broadly. “The man who gave me this gift of love,” she patted her belly. “A fine man, but not truly a man at all.”
“So you told him. What will he do, I wonder?”
“Whatever he chooses, I will support him and always be waiting. I could wait an eternity to see his face again. But I will not be selfish and ask him to stay. His happiness means more to me than my own. I can love this child enough for the both of us.”
She was too caught up in these feelings to sense the pair of eyes that observed her from the forest beyond her home.
“Didn’t I tell you? You didn’t think it through with this girl. Now look what happened. This is what comes of becoming emotionally involved with a human and not thinking about the consequences. What are you going to do now?”
“Shut up. I don’t need your opinion. I have to think this through.” He looked up through the tree branches to the black, star filled sky above. For the first time, he wondered how his mother had felt when she discovered his life inside her. Was she frightened? Did she think of giving him up? And his father? What was his reaction? He scoffed at the idea of his father really caring, as a true father should.
He drove his horse mercilessly over the terrain on through the night; on and on seeking a destination without name. He wanted to ride forever while he thought of the only woman he had allowed himself to love.
“I’ve found the woman, master. Do you want me to take her tonight?” The man crouched in a tree beside Katherine’s house. He spoke into his hand where a small, blue pebble lay. The pebble glowed and a voice answered. “No, wait a few days until the Hunter is far gone. I want to see her before he can interfere. And I’ll have no blunders, Hawk. I want her alive and unharmed. Is that clear?” The man hissed his disapproval but answered humbly enough. “Of course, master.” He glided back to the forest with his wing-like arms.
