Chapter 15: Oso sugiru(Too late)
Shuichi woke to shouts. He opened his eyes slowly, his head feeling groggy as he tried to rub the sleep away. He yawned and heard feet banging heavily on the wooden boards above his head, the rough blanket he had been using to keep warm fell from his shoulders. He looked up and heard the voices;
"Hold it!"
"Keep her steady!"
It sounded as if they were approaching land. He frowned, where was he? How long had he really been on this boat? Panic fluttered briefly in his mind but he squashed it, if he panicked it would make everything much worse. He suddenly found himself wishing he could have some more of whatever it had been that Ryuichi had given him, the drug had washed away all fear, all care and he had just floated on the currents of soft white light...it had been so good not to have to think or feel. It had been so nice to have his mind wiped of all thoughts of the absence of Yuki in his life. With that thought he was suddenly crushed under his grief. Yuki probably didn't even know he had been kidnapped. He fought the tears, it was better they didn't find him crying.
Ryuichi frowned as they closed in on the boat ahead of them, he suddenly realised something, the men on that boat weren't panicking when they saw their pursuers, in fact they slowed down. Dread filled him as they pulled up alongside. He leapt lightly onto the side of the boat, Hiro wobbled where he stood and caught himself on the prow. The two men bowed low when they realised Ryuichi was on board. "Where is he?" Ryuichi said, he managed to hide his own panic.
"Sir, we...er...we had him sold. That's what Seguchi-sama ordered...is there a problem?"
Ryuichi froze. His eyes widened and the sudden display of emotion on his face made the two men look at each other uncertainly. "Who?" he breathed finally. "Who did you sell him to?"
"Couple of men from Nagasaki...Why?"
Ryuichi chewed his lip thoughtfully for a second before turning to Hiro and Yuki. He saw the fear in their faces and returned his gaze to the two men. "Do you know where they were taking him?"
"They said they'd hold him until their client came to pick him up...they said he's a foreigner but...they don't know from where."
"Where will the exchange take place?" Ryuichi asked, his fear easing slightly, they still had time...he hoped.
The men looked at each other. "Uh...Is there a reason behind these questions?" one of them asked.
Ryuichi allowed anger to colour his voice. "Are you questioning me?" he said in a low voice. The two men blanched visibly and held up their hands.
"N-no sir...we were merely...curious."
"There's no need for concern, I'm..." Ryuichi paused and an odd, almost detached look entered his eyes. He took a breath and lied through his teeth. "I'm acting on Tohma's orders." He said firmly, he knew the men wouldn't doubt him; he never lied, unless he was ordered to. It hurt him to do it now, he was just digging his own grave but he stared each of them in the eyes until they looked away.
Suddenly the sound of another boat startled them all. Ryuichi looked up and saw a white speed boat crashing through the waves, it was driven like a crazy person was behind the wheel and he suddenly knew who was in it. He stepped back into his own boat and walked over to the starboard side to get a closer look. He breathed a single name; "Tohma!" Hiro glanced at him.
"Seguchi's...on that boat?" he asked weakly.
Yuki lifted his head, he had been silent through everything but now he stood and dipped his hand into his pocket. Something grabbed his wrist in a vice like grip and he found himself staring into burning eyes. "Let go of me!" He hissed.
Ryuichi shook his head. "No." He said simply.
"I thought you were on our side?" The author hissed back.
"I'm on Shuichi's side." Ryuichi replied simply. "No matter where my loyalties lie, I will never allow harm to come to Tohma. He is still someone I will die to protect."
Yuki finally relaxed his grip and turned away. "You know what he's going to do, don't you? Are you actually going to follow through with it?"
Ryuichi smiled. "Of course. Any order he gives me when we get Shuichi back I will follow without question."
"Are you retarded?" Yuki said looking at the singer as if he'd lost his mind.
Ryuichi laughed, a sound that was free and childish. "No, I love Tohma." The simplicity of these words rang with truth and they could all see the adoration in his eyes as he thought of the president, however, when his eyes turned to the boat winging its way towards them, Hiro saw the darkness there; The darkness of the agony of unrequited love.
Tohma saw the small boat, people stood there, waiting for him and he felt suddenly nervous. He took a shallow breath, knowing he would be seeing Ryuichi again and knowing the man had betrayed him. The transgression could not go unpunished, but he wasn't sure if he could go through with it after he had looked into those gorgeous blue eyes. They pulled up alongside the other boat and he closed his eyes briefly before finally looking up, he saw Eiri, Hiro and finally his eyes met Ryuichi's. The singer's hair blew around his face as he perched on top of a pile of boxes, their eyes met and a small smile lit the man's face, Tohma felt his heart clench. K held the boat steady while he stepped aboard the other. Ryuichi didn't move. No sign of respect, or even acknowledgement that he was facing his leader. "Ryuichi..." Tohma said, the pain in his voice badly concealed.
"Tohma." Ryuichi replied and raked fingers through his hair, the movement was perfectly innocent but Tohma almost took a step back. "You here to stop me?"
Tohma paused before sighing. "I...have come to give you some advice." He said carefully, he could feel the tension and knew Yuki had his hand on his gun. "Stop this foolishness...Please."
Ryuichi tipped his head back, both hands on the boxes as he swung his legs back and forth idly. "You know what?" he said quietly. Even though he didn't get an answer he continued. "Everything seems...so much more vibrant!" he giggled and looked back at Tohma. "The sky's bluer, the sea, the wind, everything! It's all so...Shiny." then he smiled and Tohma felt his heart break. Ryuichi slipped down off of his boxes and stepped towards his boss. "Where is he, Tohma?" He asked softly. "You can make it all so much easier! Just tell me!"
Tohma looked his friend dead in the eyes. "Why are you disobeying me?" He whispered.
Ryuichi sighed. "Because I..." He closed his eyes. "Because I love Shuichi."
Yuki made a sudden, jerky movement. His eyes rose to Ryuichi's and saw the singer looking at him. "What?"
"It's true." Ryuichi whispered. "I...I always wanted him. I've always wanted to..." he bit his lip and took a breath. "I kissed him." he confessed suddenly.
Yuki moved, almost too fast to see. He turned and slammed the singer into the side of the boat so his back arched over the edge. Water dampened his hair and he held Yuki's hand. "You want to repeat that?" The author hissed.
"Do you want to find him, Yuki?" Ryuichi replied, his eyes almost too dark. The blond released him and kicked the nearby boxes in frustration. Ryuichi lifted himself up and returned to Tohma. "Tell us where he is, Tohma...Please."
The president flinched slightly at the tone of Ryuichi's voice. "H-He'll be held at Nagasaki...in a small warehouse...The client that is picking him up tomorrow will be arriving early." He suddenly grabbed Ryuichi by the shirt and pressed his forehead against his friends. "Do you enjoy it?" He asked breathlessly.
"Enjoy what?" Ryuichi replied in a soft voice.
"Making me hate myself!" Tohma's voice cracked and everyone looked away.
Ryuichi lifted Tohma's head up and kissed him. The world shrank until it contained only the two of them, all too soon Ryuichi released him and stepped back. "I'll return." He whispered.
"Why?" Tohma said desperately. "You swore to me! You said you would die for me! What changed?"
"Nothing. Tohma, I'll still die for you! I just...I just don't want Shuichi to hurt. I don't want him to go through what I went through! It's not his fault. None of it is! Why should he be punished for falling in love?" Ryuichi's smile was bright. "Love is what makes the world go round; there really should be more of it. I don't think he should be punished for loving someone so much! Do you know...Yuki is his world! That's a wonderful thing! Why would you want to stop that?"
Tohma turned away. "I don't know..."
"I know you can't love me back, but I would never hurt you for loving Yuki." Ryuichi sighed. "The world is so full of amazing things! We should learn to appreciate them all before its...too late. Tohma?" The blond man turned back and saw Ryuichi smiling happily at him. "I'll come back, I promise."
Tohma's eyes widened as he was pushed, he reached out to grab something but Ryuichi shoved him once more. He fell into the sea, choking and coughing as he rose to the surface. "Ryuichi!" he gasped, coughing on more sea water as his friend started the engine of his own boat. "Ryuichi...Don't come back!" he cried over the roar of the engine. "Please...don't return. For all our sakes!"
Ryuichi merely smiled before steering the boat away. Tohma watched as he trod water, he felt pain shatter his heart and knew Ryuichi would return. He knew the man would face death with that small, happy smile; Tohma would be forced to order it, and the singer would return because Ryuichi loved him.
Shuichi was thrown roughly to the floor, he gasped as pain shot through his side. His hands were bound by scratchy rope, his eyes bound with cloth so he was unable to see his surroundings. He lay still on his side, breathing heavily and waiting for more pain. But, it never came. He heard voices, a strange voice, heavily accented and footsteps approaching. He kept still, hopefully they would ignore him.
"Is this the merchandise?" the foreigner asked and Shuichi felt someone grab his chin and the blindfold was torn from him. He was forced into a sitting position and he lowered his head, hiding behind his hair. "Hmm...Very pretty." The man muttered. Shuichi felt his face lifted, gently. The man's fingers were cold and the singer slowly opened his eyes, the man gasped. "Such beautiful eyes!" he whispered. "What an amazing colour! He will be sure to bring me much profit."
"The deal was Twenty Million." One of Shuichi's captors said slowly.
"Yes, of course. I will have the money wired to the agreed account tomorrow. May I have some...alone time with him?"
"Uh...We're not sure." The two men looked at each other.
The foreigner stood with an eloquent smile. "Of course, I'm sure we can arrange a small...gift, for all the hard work you two have had to do." he produced a wallet seemingly from nowhere. The money exchanged hands and Shuichi was left alone with the stranger. He tried to shy away but couldn't get very far, the man grabbed him. "Now, we should get to know each other a little better. My name is Mason Wright, and I will be taking ownership of you."
Shuichi's eyes widened and he shook his head. "No! No...Please, let me go!" He begged.
"I am afraid I can't do that, boy. Especially now that I've seen that face..." He smiled and Shuichi felt sick. "Hush now, don't cry...here..." He put his hand into the pocket of his dark coat and withdrew a clear plastic bag of pills. Shuichi eyed them warily but there was also a flicker of hunger in his eyes, the man smiled. "These will make you feel better. You want to forget, don't you?"
Shuichi chewed his lip for a second. "I..."
The man, still smiling, leaned forward and gently opened Shuichi's mouth. He placed two of the pills on his tongue and drew away. He watched as the young singer swallowed them and closed his eyes. "Excellent." He whispered.
Shuichi could hardly feel those cold hands as they explored his body, he stared off into space, his mind filled with gentle music and the world filled with soft light. The hard ground wasn't hard anymore, and he couldn't feel the scrapes as his skin was exposed to the rough concrete. He didn't have to think anymore, and it felt so good. He was numb now and nothing mattered. The soft mutters in his ear were little more than the soft brush of feathers against his skin, his eyes stared at nothing and he felt detached from his body, as if he was watching all this from outside himself. Yes, it was easier now, so much easier to just lie back and let the man do whatever he wanted to. He concentrated on the bright swirls of colour that flashed across his vision and the sound of the sea as it crashed into the shore was all just a beautiful melody to the songs in his head. Suddenly a tingle of pleasure made him groan and he turned his head to look up at the face above him, he didn't know this man, he had no idea where he was. A frown of confusion marred his face until all thought was blown away by gentle light.
The light of day slowly seeped away. Shuichi lay on the floor, his head buried in his arm. His clothes had been torn from him and his breathing was ragged, he couldn't move. He didn't want to move. His memories were filled with random snatches of images; a man with bright eyes, sweating face and cold hands. The feeling of being trapped in some kind of surreal dream, the dull throb of pain in his body, with no specific origin. He could still feel those hand son his body and yet, he hardly even cared anymore. He was condemned to a life where people would use him and he wanted nothing more than to disappear back into that sweet forgetfulness, surrounded by music and fluffy light. Even though he was haunted by a pair of amber eyes, he wasn't sure who they were supposed to belong to...he barely even knew his own name. Finally darkness surrounded him as night descended and he sighed, his fingers scratched the concrete floor as he tried to move, after a moment he gave up, it was just too much effort.
Ryuichi sang gently to himself in English as they stood on the dark filled docks. His lifted his eyes to the stars, still singing almost too softly to hear.
He smiled, ignoring Hiro's odd glances. Yuki ignored them both, his cold eyes scanning the area, searching for a small warehouse.
"Let's go..." Ryuichi muttered finally, he smiled and slid into the darkest shadows, almost as he were made of them himself.
