CHAPTER 15
Takumi returned to the dining room table with a bottle of water. He, Keisuke and Ryosuke-san had reviewed the automotive information that he and Keisuke had found online.
"Horsepower's easily tweakable, Aniki. We can increase it through modifications to the engine. I'd rather drive a Subaru. The frame can be reinforced for high-speed off-road driving impacts without adding too much weight. We don't have to consider the Skyline. Muscle cars are for people that don't have real talent. I don't want to drive one, so you can forget about adding it to my survey."
"I know you hate GT-R's with a passion, but, it needs to be considered, little brother. It's one of the few cars that meet most of the necessary criteria to be entered in the Iron Will Endurance before being modified. In the interest of economy, the Skyline has the most advantages. Look at how strong the five top cars in the commemorative pack magazine are. Every one of them classifies as muscle cars without exception. We have to accept that American racing is different from our preferred racing format. In this foreign race, a muscle car is the best candidate for this battle."
Takumi took a long pull off of his drink and sighed as he sat the bottle down. "Keisuke, driving a GT-R doesn't mean you don't have genuine skill, or that you'll lose talent by driving one. A huge section of the Iron Will course is long, flat stretches of road, both curved and straight. We have to be able to keep up with these massive big block engines and the speeds the American cars are tuned to reach and maintain. I don't really care which car I have to master once I can drive again. I'll figure out how to control whichever car I get. I want to win this battle and help repair Project D's reputation."
Yukiko brought the cordless phone into the dining room and handed it to Keisuke before Ryosuke-san could add anything more to his argument. "Moshi-moshi." Keisuke listened to the caller.
"Hai, Asada. This is Keisuke." Takumi sighed as he listened to Keisuke's side of the conversation.
"Nani?"
Ryosuke picked up Itsuke's magazine and turned pages, obviously looking for something.
"That's fine." Keisuke grabbed a pen and piece of paper. "Ok. Where would you like to meet since you're behind schedule?" He began to scribble on the page as he listened.
"Seven-thirty's fine." Keisuke jotted something else.
"We'll be there, Asada. Ja."
Keisuke hung up and looked at them. "Asada asked to change our meeting place and time. He asked if we minded meeting them at a restaurant."
"That's not a problem, little brother. Where are we meeting them at seven thirty?"
"The Imperial Court."
"Fujiwara, do mind wearing something from Keisuke's closet again?"
"Eh? Naze do I need to get dressed up again, Ryosuke-san?"
"The Imperial Court has a dress code, Fujiwara. You have to wear slacks and a tie. They prefer jackets, but you can get by with a vest."
Keisuke winced as he apologized. "Oops, I forgot about that. Gomen, Takumi. I know you aren't fond of ties."
"Maybe I should stay home. It's not like I'll have anything to say."
"You need to be there. You were contacted as a Project D driver, Fujiwara. We'll figure everything out before we leave."
"Fine, Ryosuke-san." Takumi sighed again knowing that he had no option.

Keisuke wore a long sleeved version of Takumi's favorite coffee-colored shirt, black tie, black vest, and slacks for their meeting at the Imperial Court. Coffee hued shirts reminded Takumi of their trip to Akina falls. Takumi had to curb his hormones as memories made him flush because of Keisuke's color choice. The dark color accentuated Keisuke's good looks. It was difficult to keep his hands to himself as reminders of that night danced through Takumi's head. Because Keisuke had told him why he loved him, Takumi had managed to release many of his fears. They had made love for the first time as evening descended.
Takumi wore dove gray slacks with a long sleeved white shirt, blue and white tie, and a matching gray vest. He was surrounded by his boyfriend's scent which generated more awareness of his feisty lover than Keisuke's color choice achieved alone. There was nothing he could do about his amplified frustration. Takumi resented the situation because he was fighting to calm his response. It was difficult to keep his body in check whenever he glanced at the man he adored.
Ryosuke wore a white shirt, dark blue slacks, tie, and jacket. He looked like the isha san he was about to become. Cool elegance had always been the older rotary brother's projected image. That unconscious air was even stronger for some reason as they stopped at the host's station. Takumi noticed several female heads turned to appraise their group while Ryosuke spoke with the attendant.
An unwelcome surge of irritation over them looking at Keisuke added to Takumi's unease. Takumi had difficulty accepting his new jealous tendencies. Now, that unsavory emotion reared its head as he noticed every onna whose attention was riveted on his mate. Keisuke seemed to realize his thoughts as he leaned closer and whispered in an affectionate tone, "You're the only one in my heart or in my eyes."
Takumi stared at his smiling lover for a moment, took a deep breath and tried to relax. Ryosuke-san and Keisuke were both at ease as they were led to their seats across from Asada, Inoue, and an unfamiliar Gaijin onna who wore a chic business suit in Mediterranean blue a few moments later.
Asada smiled as they got to the table. Takumi recognized him from their previous meetings. His hair was still collar length in the back and short on top. He wore dark blue tailored clothing similar to Ryosuke's. The man had an elegant air about himself that was similar to Takumi's mentor.
Asada began to speak. "Minasan, I would like to introduce a very dear friend of Sammy-chan's who happened to be here on business. This is Martonelli Robi. Robi, this is Takahashi Ryosuke, Takahashi Keisuke, and Fujiwara Takumi.
Takumi nodded to the foreign onna as he was introduced. She had pale blond hair confined in a silver jeweled clasp and electric blue eyes. Because her face was angular, she was more handsome than pretty. Small silver and gemstone earrings, and a matching necklace completed her chic attire.
"It's a pleasure to meet you. I hope you aren't offended by my presence. Sam's told me about you. Since I was here on family business, I asked Kiyo and Tohru if I could tag along to meet you for myself. Please call me Robi." Robi smiled as she spoke with a flash of perfect teeth. Like Sammy-chan, her voice was in a lower register than Takumi was accustomed to hearing. Unlike Sammy-chan, her words were fluid since she had mastered his native tongue.
"We aren't offended, Robi-san." Ryosuke was quick to reassure the stranger in their midst.
"I'm sure you remember my associate, Inoue Tohru." Takumi recognized the slim man Asada had been laughing with the night that Mogi had shot Keisuke and himself. The downhill ace noticed that his face bordered on feminine. The chestnut-haired man had an easy smile as he gave his own greetings.
Ryosuke took the seat on the other side of Keisuke, who sat next to Takumi. The amber-haired downhill specialist felt another unwelcome flash of awareness over his lover's proximity as they took their seats. Keisuke's hand brushed his as Keisuke held his crutches for a moment. Takumi turned toward the people they had come to meet as he tried to ignore his body's unreasonable behavior. He took back his crutches to stick under his chair. Takumi spoke to the black-haired man sitting opposite him. "Uhm, gomen ne, Asada-san. Could I ask how Sammy-chan's doing? I haven't seen any email lately, so I wonder if she's all right."
"Robi, you saw Sam a couple of weeks ago. Naze don't you answer?"
"I'd be delighted. Sam's been working too many hours, which is normal for her. Men are falling all over themselves to get close to her and she doesn't even notice them. It's rather depressing to watch her breaking hearts without knowing she's doing so."
The smaller man, Inoue, commented with a chuckle. "Sammy-chan thinks men exist to give her competition. She's not one to make secondary assumptions whenever a man speaks to her, Robi. Sam's too straight laced to notice innuendoes."
"I know that better than anyone, Tohru-kun. Blame her otosān. It's Russell's fault that she's a robot half of the time."
Asada pointed out. "Her ryōshin are both bodyguards, so it isn't hard to understand her habit of shutting off emotions, Robi. Just because Russell-sama was given custody when her ryōshin divorced, doesn't mean Sam had no say in her disposition. Russell-sama went to great lengths to put her through private school so she could learn etiquette. Sam despised the curriculum because she sees genteel behavior as a weakness."
The waiter arrived, so everyone's attention shifted to their orders. Takumi wondered about the lack of price listings as he considered the menu he had been given when he first sat down. Most of the selections were not Japanese foods, so he wondered if he would even like the dishes. After a quick consultation with Keisuke about the kinds of things he might like from the menu, Takumi chose a braised fish with sides.
Irritation flowed from the foreign onna's oddly deep voice once the waiter left the table. "If I weren't so busy with my family's latest merger, I'd find the time to un-bodyguard that brain of Sam's before she winds up an old maid. I'm getting really concerned about her ongoing lack of interest in anyone. I've known her since we were in elementary school, and she's never mentioned finding anyone attractive. She doesn't notice other onnas either. I considered that possibility. The only thing she notices is cars. I really hate her stupid grease monkey fetish." The frustration in Robi's tone approached melodramatic.
Asada chuckled. "Robi, it sounds like Sam didn't tell you everything about her time here. She noticed a specific man. Sam hadn't finished weighing the pros and cons to decide whether or not she would do anything when she was given the order for deportment."
Robi leaned forward as she impaled Asada with her piercing turquoise stare. "I want every detail, Kiyo. Name, age, looks, where they met. You name it. I want to know all there is to know about this man. If you have pictures, I want to see them. I want to know his field of expertise and all the rest." A perfect manicured nail tapped the table top as she emphasized each point of interest.
Inoue chortled. "Now you've done it, Kiyo. Robi won't let you escape until you've given her every drop of information that exists about the only man Sam's ever noticed. She's way too obsessed with helping Sam become a normal onna."
"I know, Tohru. We'll discuss it on the way back to Tokyo, Robi. For now let's focus on the proposal Inoue and I have for these gentlemen. That's the reason we're here. Sam's also fond of these gentlemen in her odd way, Robi."
"Oh, stop being so starchy, Kiyo. I have to find out how these gentlemen are doing so I can tell Sam. Your proposal can wait a few minutes." Robi looked across the table at Takumi. "I can see for myself that you're on crutches, so you have the shattered leg." She looked at him so Takumi gave a nod. The Gaijin moved her head to look between Ryosuke and Keisuke as she asked, "But, which of you was also shot?"
"That would be me." Keisuke answered.
"Sam wanted to know how you're both doing when she found out I was coming here. She wanted all the details I could get for her. Enlighten me about your overall health, and goals for the next few weeks to pass along, yoroshiku?"
"I was recently discharged from all medical restriction and am driving again. Fujiwara's supposed to get out of his brace sometime between late December and early February depending on his bone density readings. Then he can complete his rehabilitation program, and start driving."
"Hm. So you won't be able to drive until next year. Is that correct?"
Takumi nodded. "Tell Sammy-chan that I'll catch up fast once I start driving, Robi-san. Unless the isha san say I can't race anymore, I'll be training hard to tackle courses within a couple weeks of this brace coming off."
Their waiter returned with their food on a cart. As the man placed their meals in front of them, Takumi was surprised by the number of smaller plates that had been set upon a large platter placed before each person. Even his fish dish had an elongated plate to rest on, with a condiment selection in small cups arranged around the length of the meat. Both of his side dishes were also in individual containers. The different forks, spoons and knives set out beside his platter daunted him for a moment. He glanced at Keisuke who gave him an encouraging smile with a silently mouthed 'follow my lead' to ease his nerves.
Takumi let out the breath he was holding as he tried to relax. A few quick sideways glances at Keisuke showed him which dish to start with, and the right fork to pick up once they began eating.
Asada began speaking once everyone was served. "Naze don't we explain our proposal now, Tohru?"
Takumi glanced at Keisuke. The blond had a small smirk on his face as he nodded that it was fine. Ryosuke also gave a nod. Takumi followed suit. "Excellent. I don't know if you were aware of it, but Tohru's family owns an international shipping company. Our proposal involves getting your vehicles to New York so you can participate in the Iron Will Continental Endurance."
Ryosuke picked up the thread of conversation. "So, you want us to ship both cars through your company?"
Tohru took over the conversation. "Shipping can be problematic and costly, minasan. I would like to sponsor you by shipping all of your vehicles, and extra equipment. Since I know the International regulations, it's easy for me to accomplish the task on your behalf. You'll need several vans for the support teams which I will ship for you also."
Keisuke was the one to answer. "We're grateful for the sponsorship offer, Inoue-san. But we don't have cars that can be used in this race. We're still working on that problem."
Asada hummed as his fingers began to drum on the table top. "That's unfortunate. I thought the hachi roku might not qualify because it's a compact. But, I'm surprised that the FD can't be modified to work. I've heard of lift kits doing wonders for clearance."
"The FD can't be altered enough to handle the off road section of the course because of previous modifications that have been done. The chassis can't handle the strain of hard off-road driving. Keisuke and Fujiwara are researching cars that meet the criteria. However, many vehicles are clearly too light framed for this race." Ryosuke explained.
"The Subaru line from this nation has done well enough in previous Iron Will races. Although lighter than the original rules stipulate, Subaru has passed petition tests." Robi began to tap her fingers on the table as she added her thoughts.
"Nani? Subarus have competed in the Iron Will?" Takumi looked at the onna.
Robi nodded. "Three Subarus have finished inside the top forty. You can petition for any vehicle's admittance to this race, minasan. You have to blue print the necessary modifications which are made before the tests are run. If the car's modified frame passes, the car's admitted. Iron Will officials add it to the exemption list with notations on required upgrades to pass their inspection process. Are you familiar with driving cars that have their steering wheels on the left side? America has many cars that qualify even without many frame modifications. Classic era cars are quite popular. They're easier to modify, and aren't full of computers."
Takumi felt a flash of excitement as he answered. "I've only driven my hachi roku and Oyaji's Impreza. The Impreza's made by Subaru. How would we find out if the Impreza is on the exemption list? Skyline GT-R by Nissan comes closest to qualifying, but Keisuke really hates muscle cars."
"Sumimasen, but I'm dreadful with names. Nani was yours again?"
"Fujiwara Takumi desu, Robi-san."
"Domo, Fujiwara-san. Do you plan to approach the car manufacturers to become sponsors so you can drive their cars?"
Ryosuke spoke up. "We haven't decided how to approach sponsors yet. Fujiwara and Keisuke have a handicap that has to be addressed before we consider that step."
Asada spoke with a flash of concern. "Ryosuke-san, is there a problem related to their injuries?"
Ryosuke shook his head. "iie. Both of Project D's aces feel that unless they master off-road conditions, they'll waste a sponsor's resources by entering the Iron Will."
Keisuke picked up the narrative. "Dirt tracks, and techniques are almost non existent here. We're hoping to use construction sites, or whatever dirt roads we find to prepare starting in late February or early March. A friend of Fujiwara's has loaned us several magazines that have off road driving articles. Practicing the new techniques will be very different than reading about them."
"Keisuke-san and I don't want to ruin Project D's reputation. To be disqualified once we start the off road section would be unforgivable. Project D's reputation includes our teammates pride, not just ours."
"Fujiwara's right. Unless we can give a good fight, we'll dishonor ourselves, and everyone associated with us. Our successes are Project D's pride, minasan."
Robi had a wolfish grin Takumi discovered as she rested her chin on her wrist and looked between the three of them. "You really are first-class. I'm beginning to see naze Sam's so psyched about you three. If you're only problems are getting cars qualified, and learning off road driving tricks, I think I may be able to help you."
"I'm not certain we understand, Robi-san." Ryosuke sounded cautious.
"It's simple, really. You three should get your passports ready. I'll make certain that by mid-March, you're in Arizona, which is one of the off-road Meccas in America. I have a winter vacation house where you can stay while you train. I can get whichever cars you want through the petition tests if they aren't among the exemptions already. I can also help you with signing additional sponsors, and off-road teachers to whip you into shape in six weeks. Tohru's already offered to be a sponsor by handling the shipping of all your vehicles. Once I finish this hotel merger with my family's resort spa corporation in a couple of weeks, I can sponsor you through our new Japanese subsidiary. By having two backers with international trade status, other sponsors will sign on. You can train, and know you won't disgrace yourselves, or your sponsors when race day arrives."
Ryosuke, Keisuke, and he stared at Robi. Takumi could not make his voice work as her proposal sank in. Ryosuke was the first to recover. "Robi-san, naze would you go to the trouble for Project D's team? You don't know any of us."
"Don't misunderstand me. I'm doing this for Sam. I've known her since elementary school, and she's the best friend I've ever had. This is only the second time I've seen her excited about anyone she's ever met. Sam's not a people person. She's usually too focused on her blasted grease monkey fetish to notice people, or spend time talking to them. She told me about how she talked mechanics with you gentlemen. She also mentioned that one of you was genuinely interested in her otosān's culture. It's obvious that you three made her very happy. Because it's so rare for Sam to like other human beings, I've decided that what Sam wants, Sam's going to get."
