“What is your deal,” Sanzo addressed Tsuki. She looked at him over her shoulder.
“I thank you for the gem of wisdom you provided me in the forest that day,” Tsuki answered as she turned to face him, “You could almost say you saved me.” She grabbed a small pod, crushing it open in one hand while she used the other to manipulate the growth and thickness of the stem that protruded from the dirt.
“But for now,” she continued, wrapping the length of the stem once around Sanzo’s head, the thickest part forcing itself in his mouth. “You’re going to need to keep quiet,” she stated. Sanzo glared at her. “I wouldn’t recommend biting down on that,” Tsuki continued, “the taste isn’t pleasant.” Sanzo choked on the thick stem, frustrated as he tried turning and twisting his head to see if it would move. Despite his efforts, it was securely fastened around his head.
Just then, Goku’s staff whizzed by Tsuki’s face, the end embedding into the wall next to Sanzo’s torso. She cursed under her breath, turning her head to the defiant little monkey who did not appear to be amused with the additional restraint put on Sanzo. “I guess it’s game on,” Tsuki chuckled. Using his staff as leverage, Tsuki launched herself into the air. Goku retrieved his staff, darting off as Xenon unleashed another round of bullets.
Tsuki took aim, throwing an onslaught of pods at Goku, connecting with his arms and back. Tsuki hovered in the air, her eyes glowing as she maneuvered her hands, manipulating the length and thickness of the vines around his arms. Goku struggled, vines stretching across his back and around his upper arms, pulling his shoulders back.
Goku dropped his staff as the vines constricted around him. As he pulled against the vines, he found it only resulted in him tugging on his own body. Xenon landed a punch across Goku’s face, the force snapping the vines as Goku flew across the room. He landed hard, groaning as he rose back on his feet. Shien launched an attack of his Qi whips at Goku who ran, crying out in pain whenever a whip connected. He was determined to get to Sanzo.
Homura appeared in front of Goku, blocking his path. He smiled down at Goku as he rested the blunt backing of his sword against his shoulder. Goku stopped in his tracks, glaring up at him. Goku’s mind raced, realizing the reality of the situation. Sanzo and Hakuryuu were both chained against the wall, incapacitated. He slowly raised a hand to his coronet, almost as if he were contemplating it as a last resort against the four gods in the room. He lowered his head, gritting his teeth as he continued weighing his options.
“Go on,” Homura encouraged, “take it off.”
Goku looked up at Homura, removing his hand from his forehead and stood firm, squaring his shoulders. “You’ve heard me say it before, and I’ll say it again.” Goku got into another fighting stance, anchoring his feet as he balled his hands into fists. “I’d rather die than take it off for the likes of you.”
Homura let out a light chuckle. “So be it.”
All four gods lunged at Goku at full strength. Goku’s speed was no joke as he blocked attack after attack, though it was clear he was showing a sliver of fatigue, overwhelmed by the group assault. Tsuki cried out as she drew her arm back, preparing to connect her whip against Goku who quickly dodged her attack, countering by kicking her in the abdomen. Tsuki let out a cry as she recoiled, landing hard. Homura took the opportunity to kick Goku hard behind his legs, sending the confused monkey into the air as one of Shien’s whips came down on him hard.
The impact from the landing caused the floor to crack. Sanzo let out a muffled cry as he watched Goku struggle to move, turning himself onto his side as he gripped his stomach.
“Just give it up,” said Xenon as he walked up to Goku, who coughed a small pool of blood. Tsuki walked up to Goku, kicking him in the shoulder to roll him onto his back. Both Tsuki and Xenon backed away when Homura approached, picking up Goku by the throat with one hand before kneeing him hard in the stomach, the blow launching the heretic across the room. Goku choked on air, his body going into shock the intensity of the pain.
Goku landed hard, rolling from the momentum before laying face-down and motionless. Sanzo cried out again, his frustration growing against the restraint in his mouth. He bit down repeatedly on the stem, a thick liquid secreted due to his bites, the substance leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. After cutting through the stem and the pieces falling, Sanzo spat the liquid harshly on the floor. “You bastards,” he shouted.
“Man, we just barely managed it with all four of us,” Xenon proclaimed.
“His powers are increasing at an alarming rate,” replied Shien.
“You two can handle it from here. Tsuki, you’re coming with me,” Homura ordered. Tsuki nodded and followed him, knowing at this point she would just have to trust him since he had a better idea of executing the portal for a new Heaven and Earth than she did.
“You stupid monkey! Wake up! Wake up, damn you,” Sanzo shouted, his voice echoed throughout the room. Homura scooped up Goku, taking his limp body in his arms as Tsuki alongside him and ignoring the priest’s frustrations before the voices of all three men faded.
Homura and Tsuki made their way up a stairwell when they heard a loud crash from one of the rooms below. “Ah, the uninvited guests,” Tsuki commented.
“They are of no importance. Let us continue on our way, my dear,” replied Homura. Tsuki laid out a couple of pods in the corner of a few steps, infusing each one with her spiritual energy. A ring of light glided along the length of the step before fading: an invisible trigger which would set off the pods and latch onto whatever landed on that step.
Tsuki hurried up the stairs after Homura. Upon appearing through the floor, she saw Homura had already breached the outer ring of the pentagram with Goku still in his arms. The inscription reacted to Goku and began to give off a blue glow. Homura laid Goku in the middle of the pentagram, the energy from within the pentagram buzzing with the Great Sage’s energies.
“Now then, shall we,” Homura addressed the unconscious monkey. He reached a hand out to the coronet, easily slipping it off without resistance. “It’s time to open the door to the new world.” He tossed the coronet aside, the harsh ring briefly echoing in the room before Goku’s eyes went wide, his body tensing at the sudden rush of demonic energy coursing through his veins.
Homura walked backwards and outside the pentagram. Tsuki made her way to his side and watched the display before the two of them. The pentagram changed to a teal color as the room filled with Goku’s chokes and gasps for air, his body convulsing as he continued to struggle against the changes.
“That’s right, Goku,” Homura encouraged, “Let go. Let go of all of your rage, all your hunger.”
“Let yourself become the spark that ignites the formation of the new Heaven and Earth,” proclaimed Tsuki, her features sharpening from the light emitting from the pentagram.
“You are the creator,” Homura echoed. At that moment, Goku’s body had completed its transformation as he let out a gurgled scream, bolts of electricity spider webbing throughout the room. The intensity of the damage inflicted on the floor and support pillars in sync with Goku's screams as his mind fought for control before losing everything and became the Great Sage.
Suddenly, one of the pillars cracked loudly, falling and taking both Homura and Tsuki by surprise as they both lurched away from the pentagram which grew brighter as it continued mixing with the Great Sage’s spiritual power. Homura grabbed Tsuki, holding her close as he erected a barrier around the two of them, pieces of the ceiling and pillars chipping and falling over them.
Tsuki clung to him, wondering if perhaps Homura miscalculated something when opening the gate. High above the pentagram, a black sphere began to form and grow. The bolts of electricity seemed to be concentrated and pulled towards the orb as it grew.
“Is that...from Goku,” Tsuki asked.
“Yes,” replied Homura, “That’s good, Goku. Let it all out.” Goku’s screams continued to echo throughout the room.
“How much longer,” Tsuki asked. Homura clutched his chest before leaning forward, struggling to stay on his feet. Tsuki cried out his name as Homura mumbled to himself, lightly trembling as he held onto Tsuki. “Homura, what is it?”
“It’s nothing, my dear.” Homura turned his focus back on Goku, occasionally looking up at the black sphere, marveling at its size. The sphere finally reached its peak size and changed to a magnificent white color before a landscape came into focus, the electricity subsiding as the Great Sage passed out from exhaustion. Tsuki looked at the sphere and gasped at the beauty of the world shown within it.
“Wow,” Tsuki began, “it’s beautiful.” It seemed to be the same as the Lower World, but appeared more peaceful. It was everything they had been fighting for, for centuries this is what they had been seeking. Opening this new world would cause Heaven to act, but not before the council would have a meeting on how to proceed. She was actually a bit surprised Heaven hadn’t already acted with them getting this far.
Homura released his grip on Tsuki and stepped towards the sphere which displayed an open field of lush grass, a look of determination on his face that Tsuki had never seen before. Tsuki’s ear twitched, her pods on the steps had been triggered. “Homura,” she began, “someone’s approaching.” Homura didn’t answer her, his focus entirely on the world within the sphere. Goku, no Seiten Taisei, began to stir in the middle of the pentagram. The world within the sphere faded and displayed a set of golden doors.
Suddenly, Seiten Taisei lifted himself from the floor, standing on his feet. Tsuki took her place next to Homura, getting ready to defend them both. This is the first time she had seen the Great Sage, it was far more intimidating being stared down by him in person than it was watching Naneko struggle with him in the desert. The glow from the pentagram lit his face from underneath, highlighting his sinister features, his thirst for blood.
Seiten Taisei launched himself high into the air, taking the two by surprise with his speed as he landed a single punch, throwing Homura off balance before swiping his hand, claws fully extended as he cut Homura deep across his shoulder and down his chest before kicking him hard, sending him flying into the wall.
Homura’s scream of pain echoed throughout the tower as he landed hard against the wall, his body forming a deep crevasse against the stone walls. Tsuki cried out his name, stunned by Seiten Taisei’s speed and agility. She stood in front of Homura, staring down the Great Sage. This was a different display of fighting and aggression than what she witnessed when Naneko fought him. Perhaps it was because Naneko had gone after Seiten Taisei so soon after Goku fought in the desert, not giving the Great Sage enough time to recharge.
No matter, she had prepared thoroughly for this date. Tsuki took a few deep breaths to calm her mind before unbuttoning the top buttons on her qipao dress. Homura turned to her curiously, was she going to disrobe? Tsuki pulled her hair back in a high ponytail, exposing both eyes, before fishing out a chain necklace with a lotus pendant, looping it over her head and unhooking the clasp.
Seiten Taisei felt an air of familiarity about her, realizing that she was likely the one that supplied Naneko with restraints powerful enough to slow him down. He concluded that, while he smelt demonic blood within her, Tsuki must’ve been part god. That was the only way she could create such restraints. He glared at Tsuki as she played with the chain of her necklace.
“I thought you’d recognize this,” Tsuki began.
“Tsuki, what are you doing?”
“Don’t worry, Homura. I’ve got this.”
Tsuki’s eyes began to glow with their respective colors, a brilliant gold, and a burning red. The chain and pendant interchanged between the two colors before Tsuki pulled her arm back and whipped the necklace chain forward. Homura’s eyes grew wide at the speed of the jewelry piece as it quickly extended and snapped around Seiten Taisei’s neck. From the distance they were at, he wondered how was it possible. Homura took a few steps forward as Seiten Taisei screamed loudly at the restraint, the lotus pendant burning against his flesh as he clawed and tugged at the chain without it moving so much as an inch.
“Don’t think I didn’t see you out in the desert with Naneko,” Tsuki’s voice echoed, the wind beginning to howl in the room. “I made her jewelry especially for you. It would have been foolish if I did not prepare a set for myself in case this was the form we needed for the New World.”
Seiten Taisei gripped both hands around the chain, noting that it was not budging as he continued to pull against it. Tsuki grinned at him before Seiten Taisei charged at her, fist drawn back before throwing it forward. Tsuki crossed her arms in front of her face, blocking the punch as it connected with her power limiters, forming hairline cracks.
The air around Tsuki crackled with electricity as she pushed him off, lassoing the chain through the air and tangling it around Seiten Taisei’s wrist. Tsuki manipulated the chain, forcing the Great Sage to punch himself in the face. Homura stared at Tsuki, stunned that she had such weapons.
Seeing Seiten Taisei struggle against the chain, Tsuki quickly snapped a pod bomb from her belt and threw it hard at him. The bomb exploded against his chest, burying Seiten Taisei in an overgrowth of vines and branches, coating him in leaves.
“Don’t kill him,” Homura stated, “we still need him.”
“This won’t kill him,” Tsuki replied, “I’d be disappointed if it did.” The body covered in shrubbery did not move for some time. Tsuki calmed down, the glow in her eyes fading as the wind subsided. Had she suffocated him? She could still feel his life force through the chain, so what was going on? The shrub exploded, sending shards of branches and greenery everywhere, the chain shattering to pieces.
“Shit,” Tsuki exclaimed, running back towards the cabinet full of her things. She looked over her shoulder to see Seiten Taisei flying towards her. Tsuki quickly reached into her satchel and grabbed the handles of her whips, anchoring herself as she waited for him to get within range.
The sound of a bullet going off resonated through the air, causing Seiten Taisei to briefly retreat and land elsewhere. Heads turned towards the main doors. There stood Kougaiji and Sanzo with his banishing gun drawn.
“Whoa,” Kougaiji exclaimed under his breath, “what is it?”
Sanzo took note of the coronet sitting on the ground near the pentagram, knowing that he was in for one hell of an afternoon. The Great Sage stared at the two from across the room, a smile tugging at his lips. “Get ready.”
“What,” Kougaiji asked. Before being able to fully process Sanzo’s words, Seiten Taisei had kicked the demon in the chest, sending him backward. Frustrated, Kougaiji launched a thick pillar of fire as the Great Sage neared him. Seiten Taisei cut through the flames like it was nothing, landing a punch so hard it launched the red headed demon across the room. Kougaiji rolled and bounced across the floor before hitting the stone wall, leaving an indent upon impact.
“You’ve been a very bad monkey,” Sanzo commented. Seiten Taisei let out a scream as the priest raised his gun. Tsuki readied her whips to attack before the image of the Great Sage vanished. Seiten Taisei reappeared in front of the priest, landing another kick which sent Sanzo to the ground and his banishing gun across the room towards Kougaiji.
Tsuki’s eyes glowed, her whips resonating with her as she snapped her arms towards Seiten Taisei, catching an arm in each whip. The sound of the banishing gun cocking got Tsuki’s attention as she turned towards the red head who murmured under his breath.
Kougaiji took aim and, without hesitation, fired a bullet at the Great Sage. Seiten Taisei let out a scream, jerking his arms hard and dissipating Tsuki’s whips, forcing her off balance towards the path of the bullet. Tsuki’s heart sank as her eyes widened. “Oh no,” she panicked, “With these new power limiters, I don’t think I can get out of the way in time! Shien never showed me how to deflect a bullet from a banishing gun!” Tsuki squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for the impact of the bullet.
Suddenly, the Great Sage appeared in front of Tsuki. Holding out his palm out, he created a barrier to deflect the bullet. The power within the bullet was enough to send Seiten Taisei backward. Tsuki braced herself against him as they were both pushed back. Seiten Taisei stopped in his tracks while the momentum threw her back towards the wall. Tsuki lost her footing, falling to the ground as she rolled out of the impact and jumped back up to her feet.
Tsuki’s heart pounded fiercely, her attention turned towards Seiten Taisei, cautiously walking away from him. If he had wanted Tsuki out of the battle, he could have easily used her as a shield. For a moment, she wondered if he pitied her. Or perhaps it was the idea of him not having the satisfaction of killing her. He grinned from behind his armlet, sending a shiver down Tsuki’s spine.
Sanzo stood up, ordering both of them to stand aside. “What, you think you can stop him,” Tsuki cried out.
“It’s not about stopping him,” Sanzo began, “monkeys need to be trained.” Kougaiji threw the banishing gun at Sanzo’s feet as he walked past the priest.
“Didn’t I tell you,” Kougaiji replied, “that I’d get my pride back.”
“So you’re willing to die for something as foolish as pride,” Tsuki criticized as she approached the two, having no idea what he was referring to. The redhead shot an offensive glare at the half-breed.
“If you ever suffered the same embarrassment as I have, at the hands of this demon, you’d understand.” Tsuki rolled her eyes as Kougaiji walked past her. “When you have someone to fight for, someone important to you, that’s all I need to keep fighting for myself.”
Tsuki stared at Kougaiji as he approached the Great Sage, moved by his words. While she was sure she hadn’t suffered the same hardships as the demon, she understood his will to fight. That burning passion to right a wrong, that’s the only thing that pushes Tsuki to continue fighting with Homura towards the New World.
“It’s been a while since we fought, eh, Goku?” Tsuki looked at him curiously as Kougaiji chuckled before continuing. “I guess you don’t remember that. Well then, shall we start?”
“A creature like you is not meant to be chained,” another voice started. Tsuki’s eyes lit up as she looked over her shoulder to see Homura standing, watching the scene continue to unfold in front of him. “You are truly one of a kind. A soul like yours should be free.”
“Homura,” Tsuki called out.
The sound of Kougaiji’s screams echoed throughout the room as he launched himself at the Great Sage.
