Mid-August.
The day of Mamoru and Usagi’s wedding dawned with absolutely perfect weather. There was not a cloud in the sky, and the sun shone brightly, except for the shadow that only Aster could feel in the back of her mind, growing in darkness and cold. She had not mentioned it to anyone, yet. The only other Senshi that seemed to be having any kinds of warnings were Rei and Hotaru. Haruka was nervous because of the menace she sensed on the wind, but it wasn’t the definite kind of warning that Rei and Hotaru had, or even the feeling of impending doom that Aster was experiencing. It was just the feeling of something malevolent lurking in the shadows. It could be Takara and his youma.
Aster got the whole household up, to prepare for the day. The wedding was going to be at the Imperial Hotel, with the reception afterwards at what Aster and Akari were both calling ‘Chiba House’.
Just after breakfast, the limousine that Aster had hired for the bride’s party arrived to take all of them to the hotel. Aster admonished Sean and Haruka to make certain that Mamoru arrived at the hotel within the hour, to prepare for the wedding. After making dire threats if they were late, Aster climbed into the limousine with the girls and Akari.
After a great deal of talking, and thinking, and research, Usagi and Mamoru had opted for a western-style wedding. Usagi’s ivory wedding gown was waiting in one of the suites of the hotel, along with the bridesmaids gowns, the gown Akari would wear as Matron of Honor, and the gown that Aster would wear as Maid of Honor. The tuxedos for the others were in another suite, on another floor. The gardens of the hotel were being turned into every woman’s fantasy wedding.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Practically before the ceremony was over, Aster and Akari sneaked out of the back door of the hotel and into Akari’s powder blue car. The limousine that had carried the women to the hotel was going to carry the bridal couple to the reception. Sean’s limousine and Aster’s Rolls, by previous arrangement, were going to ferry the rest of the group there. Usagi and Mamoru thought they were getting a home reception before a honeymoon at the penthouse in Chiba.
Before too long, they drove up to the massive wrought-iron gate in front of the huge garage, pulled out one of the remote-controls, and pushed the button to open it. A loud squeal-roar that sounded exactly like Gojira filled the air, and Akari drove her powder-blue sedan up to the garage and parked, the movie-monster closing the gate behind her. Getting out of the car, Akari noticed that her orders to the caterers were not being followed as she had directed. Suddenly angry that her authority was being flaunted in this manner, she stalked over to the men to set things straight.
"The buffet goes there! And the dance floor goes right here! Get it right!" the woman in purple was pointing first to one side, and then the other, her face red with her ire. The older woman plainly irritated the men who were setting up for the party.
"The feng shui will be all wrong if we do it that way." the man argued, folding his arms over his chest. "I will not be responsible if anything happens."
"You are wrong!" Akari nearly shouted. "I have studied that technique all of my life, and if you continue in this manner, you will be bringing bad luck to the occasion. I will not tolerate that. You will do it the way I have ordered."
Aster decided to take matters into her own hands. She had a great deal of experience in dealing with servants and other employees, so she knew just what would motivate the recalcitrant men. She strode up to the man, and tapped his shoulder. Hard.
"Excuse me," she began, a hint of steel in her normally mellow voice. "Who is paying your salary here?"
"She is." he said, indicating Akari, his tone both irritated and haughty. "But I don't see that it is any concern of yours."
"Then you will obey her orders." Aster said firmly, her hands crossed in front of her chest. "She knows what she is doing. She can always hire another company to take over here, you know."
"There's not enough time to do that." the man sniffed disdainfully. "So she's stuck with our company."
"I wouldn't be so sure of that, if I were you." she replied, pulling her cell phone from her jacket pocket. "All it will take is one call. I'm sure that any other catering service would jump at the chance to serve a Fushida. Miss Chiba expects her orders to be obeyed."
"There's no need for that." the man suddenly looked cowed. "It will be as you say, Chiba-sama." Then he hurried off to fix things to fit what she wanted.
"See?" Aster smiled, taking one of Akari’s still-shaking hands. "Handling men like these guys is all a matter of reminding them of where their money comes from."
"But he was right." Akari said softly. "It is too late to find someone else to do this. And it has to be perfect for - Mamoru." She had a hard time even saying his name now, and the other woman was well aware of why. To fall in love with her own brother must have been putting a terrible strain on her adopted sister.
"I know that." Aster smiled wider, her gold eyes twinkling merrily. "And you know that. But he doesn't know that, and it's best to let him think that he can be replaced like that." And she snapped her fingers. "Now, why don't you go and change into something more comfortable. I'll hold down the fort here."
"Gomen nasai, but I am most comfortable as I am." the chestnut-haired woman replied with a small giggle. "The seamstress did such a wonderful job of tailoring this gown that it is almost like wearing nothing at all."
Though it seemed like chaos in the large side yard of the property, it was organized for the most part, and now the work was proceeding smoothly. Aster supported her sister as best she could, for she was well aware that the encounter had distressed her deeply. The older woman was not good with confrontations, and Aster was actually surprised that Akari had been able to stick up for herself as much as she had that day. At any other time, she might well have been reduced to a spineless mass, especially if a man was involved in some fashion. Then, she realized the reason why - it was all for Mamoru's sake.
Abruptly, Aster had a great idea. She snatched the key to the new house from Akari and ran across the yard. Taking the key ring to her house, she soon located a long length of red ribbon, tied a huge bow through it and gave it back. Akari seemed thrilled at that, and gave the golden-haired woman a huge hug, gushing about how she did understand, and thanking her profusely for her help. She placed the beribboned keys behind the wedding cake next to the deed, and she hurried off to see that everything was proceeding smoothly.
Aster also suggested that a Shinto priest be asked to come down to properly bless the new house, and Akari agreed, thinking that it was a wonderful idea. All it took was for the golden-eyed woman to make a single phone call, and an old man was on his way with assistants and all of the items needed for the blessings. In mere moments, he had arrived and was escorted inside. Though he stood barely four feet tall, he carried himself as if he were as tall as the greatest of the Shitennou.
As other guests were starting to arrive, Akari placed two men by the foot-gate, ready to check that everyone had the special invitations that had been sent out.
Then the lavender-clad woman quickly moved off to attend to other things. To Aster, it seemed as if the chestnut-haired woman was trying to be everywhere at once, and was actually succeeding, for the most part. The day wore on, and more people arrived, causing Aster to think that the area would soon become overcrowded, though there always seemed to be more than enough room to hold them all.
Finally, nearly everyone had arrived except the bridal couple. There had been much marveling at the elaborate preparations.
Near the front of the house, the cellular telephone in Akari's pocket began to ring. When she answered it, the driver of the limousine told her that they were less than five minutes away from the house. Thanking him for the information, she then signaled for the orchestra, which was set up near the front wall of the property by the dance floor, to begin playing. Then she took up her position just inside the foot-gate. She was shaking again, but more from anticipation than anything else.
She watched as the long, black car pulled up in front of the gate. The chauffer hopped out of the front and opened the wide door, helping the passengers out of the vehicle. Usagi made her appearance, still looking radiant in the custom gown she'd worn at the ceremony. And finally, Mamoru left the car, also still garbed in the white tuxedo that he’d been married in.
"Greetings, my brother." Akari began, giving him a low bow. "May I welcome you to the party in your honor. If you please, I have a gift for you on this most glorious of days."
"You've already given me much more than any man deserves, Akari." he replied softly. "I'll never be able to pay it back as it is."
"There is no need, Mamoru." she said, keeping her eyes lowered. "It is your karma. But this is from me and Aster to you."
And with that, she pulled out the beribboned key-ring and handed it to him, holding it so that he could take it without touching her fingers. He carefully examined the huge mass of red ribbon, finally locating the keys and looking at them carefully. After gently extracting them from the bow, he studied them again, and then looked at her quizzically.
"These aren't car keys." he started, wondering what she thought she was doing. "So, what are they for?"
"They go along with this." Akari answered, now pulling out the envelope that contained the deed to the house, and handing that to him as well. "We hope that you will like it."
She felt her face growing warm, and she struggled to hide it, as he opened the envelope and pulled out the papers inside. Scanning the pages, he had to stop and read them more thoroughly, and still he found it hard to believe.
"Akari." he said in a near whisper. "This is the deed to this property! Why are you giving this to me?"
"It is not proper for someone with your future responsibilities to live in a tiny apartment." she replied quietly. "Nor is it right for my ototo to have such a small place to call home. So, I bought this house from Aster, and she helped me decorate it. It is the best thing that I can give you, my brother."
"You've already done too much for me as it is." he protested mildly. "How can I ever repay you?"
"Accept the gift in the manner it was offered." Akari smiled. "I hope that you will not think badly of me for being presumptuous, but I had all of your things moved in here during the ceremony, including your car and motorcycle. This is your home now."
"But what about you?" Mamoru asked, now concerned that she might not have thought of herself. "You are going to live here too, you know."
"I had thought you would say that," she went on smoothly. "So, I have taken the liberty of moving myself and my husband in as well. Everything is arranged. The remote control for the car gate is in your car, waiting for you. Please do not be alarmed at the sound, however. It sounds like Gojira. And the gate you just recently passed through is Mosura. Aster thought that you needed the Monster's protection. But if you do not like them, I can have them fixed."
"No," he laughed heartily at the idea. "My second favorite monster is Mosura, and everybody likes Gojira. I love the idea. In fact, I was always a bit jealous of Aster having her monsters, and now, I have my own. Arigato, Akari."
"Do itashimashite, Mamoru." she bowed once more, grateful that he liked his gift. "Would you care for a tour of your House?"
"Later." he replied kindly. "There's a party to attend, and I do seem to be the guest of honor. So, why don't we have some fun first?"
ChibiUsa took this opportunity to grab his free hand, and led both him and Usagi to the seats of honor that had been set up just for them. The special chairs were situated near the area where the more personal wedding gifts had been placed, though more than a few very personal presents had been left in the couple's bedroom upstairs.
The entire area was decorated in white and scarlet, and a large dance floor had been set up near a twenty-piece orchestra. Long tables groaned under the enormous amounts of food, and dozens of smaller tables were arranged seemingly haphazardly on the huge lawn. A large wet-bar had been set up for those who wished something stronger than soda, and it was well-frequented.
Off to one side, on a table of it's own, a pair of huge, Western-style wedding cakes sat, one was topped by a traditional heart-shaped arch with figures of a man in a tux and a woman in a long white gown and the other had a pair of 'action figures' on the top, Tuxedo Kamen stood next to Sailor Moon. ChibiUsa told them that the second one was brought over by Aster, who had no idea that Akari had made the other one, which was completely crafted by the older woman. Despite all the noise and joviality, the area gave off a feeling of peace, and the newlyweds could tell that the hand of Akari had asserted itself everywhere.
When the dancing started, it was easy to see that couples formed during the Silver Millennium were still as strong as they were then.
Minako stepped out with Eduard LeBlanc, Kishi Mars, a former Grand Prix driver, who was now the chauffer for Sean O'Connell. Rei was discretely dating Robert Van Doorn, Kishi Jupiter, who worked as a Civil Engineer specializing in tsunami defenses. Ami was seeing Martin Peterson, Kishi Venus, a Botanist working for Planetary Energy Corporation, a company owned and founded by Sean. Makoto wasn't dating, per se, but she had been sort of paling around with Thomas Black, Kishi Moon, doing her best to teach the puritanical young man that having fun wasn't bad for him. Sean himself pulled the tuxedo-clad Haruka onto the dance floor, promising the next dance to Aster.
After a bit of dancing, Mamoru and Usagi were asked to cut the huge cakes, following the Occidental tradition that Usagi had said she wanted, and many pictures were taken as they fed each other a piece of the rich, pink and white frosted chocolate cake, the more formal of the two, seemingly getting more on their faces than they did in their mouths. After that, Usagi threw the bridal bouquet, right into Aster’s hands, folded neatly in her lap. The garter from Usagi's leg went sailing over the heads of the crowd and smacked a late arrival in the chest.
The crowd parted, to show a very surprised Takagi, with Michiru at his side.
"You have to dance with him." Usagi said, dragging Aster out of her chair. "It's traditional. The woman who catches the bouquet must dance with the man who got the garter. You have to have your picture taken together, as well. It would mean bad luck if you don't."
"Then I shall dance with him." Aster said coolly. "And I will have my picture taken. I will not be the bearer of bad karma on your wedding day. But after that, I have to see if Akari needs help."
"It's going along just fine, Aster." she smiled warmly. "I know you miss him. Maybe he had a good reason for disappearing."
Aster stepped onto the dance floor, facing Takagi.
“Nikkou … “ he began, only to be cut of by her raised hand.
“I’m dancing with you because it would be bad luck if we didn’t,” she said. “You left me, not the other way around. I have a life of my own, now, with the woman that your mekake left behind, and the man that beat you before. I’m not interested in your excuses.”
