~ Love Remains the Same~
A thousand times I've seen you standing
Gravity like lunar landing
You make me want to run till' I find you
I shut the world away from here
I drift to you, you're all I hear
As everything we know fades to black

Half the time the world is ending
Truth is I am done pretending

I never thought that I
Had anymore to give
You're pushing me so far
Here I am without you
Drink to all that we have lost
Mistakes we have made
Everything will change
But love remains the same

I find a place where we escape
Take you with me for the space
The city buzz sounds just like a fridge
I walk the streets through seven bars
I have to find just where you are
The faces seem to blur
They're all the same

Half the time the world is ending
Truth is I am done pretending

I never thought that I
Had anymore to give
You're pushing me so far
Here I am without you
Drink to all that we have lost
Mistakes we have made
Everything will change
But love remains the same

So much more to say
So much to be done
Don't you trick me out
We shall overcome
It's all left still to play

We should've had the sun
Could have been inside
Instead we're over here

Half the time the world is ending
Truth is I am done pretending
Too much time too long defending
You and I are done pretending

I never thought that I
Had anymore to give
You're pushing me so far
Here I am without you
Drink to all that we have lost
Mistakes we have made
Everything will change
Everything will change

I, oh I,
I wish this could last forever
I, oh I,
As if we could last forever

Love remains the same
Love remains the same

Love Remains the Same - Gavin Rossdale

Kanda heard the distant sounds of fighting and summoned his demon insects. The chains holding him snapped easily but he was tired and weak. With a shaking had to he grasped Mugen, feeling like he had come home.

His innocence flowed through him, around him. “This is it” he said to the blade, “We cannot lose. Either way, I think this is the end of us.”

The innocence pulsed as though in agreement. Kanda tilted his face to the ceiling, “Forgive me.”

He staggered to the doorway, his legs trembling from lack of food and dehydration. He was a dead man walking. At least, he thought in morbid humor, he knew it.

His goal was simple. To find Kyria and Tyki Mikk, destroy them. After that he could die and bear his failures in the afterlife.

Kyria watched the progress of the fight through a sphere in her hand. The Exorcists were drawing closer to her inner sanctum. Not the most appealing idea, but she was a powerful Noah. Surely they would be much work. Well, except for Walker.

She would just leave him to Tyki. Speaking of the Pleasure…just where was he? She made a small hissing sound of disdain. Probably off digging holes with his pathetic humans. Why he loved them so, she didn’t know. But when she was finished here, she’d take care of that.

She smiled widely as she caught sight of the woman behind them. “So Aleia” she purred, “You live.”

Her sphere flared brightly and then the image appeared again, “Not for long. I’ll drop your mangled body at Kanda’s feet. That should break him easily enough.”

Time seemed to slow in Aleia’s world, the loud sounds of battle fading to the austere silence of her inner world. Like old times. She slashed and kicked, turned and fought with all her might. Feeling the bite and slice of blades against her arms and legs. She didn’t care, had to keep moving.

When Allen and Lavi kicked open a heavy door and they had taken in the sight of Kyria. She was unworried, propped against a mass of colorful pillows, her crimson eyes bored and fixed on Aleia.

Her painted lips moved, forming words that Aleia couldn’t hear over the beating of her own heart. Lavi nudged her and the world rushed back to her.

“in two weeks. He might be dead even now” Kyria was saying. Her tone languid, “Walker Tyki is around here somewhere. He’ll want to finish you.”

“No he won’t” Lavi told her, “How do you think we found you. Its over.”

Those red eyes had taken on a look of surprise followed by resignation. “The pleasure” she mused, “So flighty. No matter.”

She rose, her power coalescing around her. Her olive skin turned to gray, the stigmata on her brow apparent and on her lovely cheek, a livid scar. She launched herself at them, clashing with them viciously.

And then she used her full ability. She opened her mouth and shrieked and Lavi clapped his hands over his ears with a cry at the sharp pain rocketing through his head. Aleia, beside him was no better off. Allen was struggling to crawl over to them, but Kyria grabbed an ornate weapon from the wall and impaled his arm, pinning him to the floor.

Blood poured from their noses and tears from their eyes as she forced them to their knees. They would be crushed soon. She stepped closer to enjoy the sight. Aleia was panting curled on her side, screaming from the pain of it.

Kyria loomed over her, “Now you die!” she shrieked in that horrible pitch. Her claw like fingers swooped and then she drew back with a pained cry, clutching her bloody arm to her chest.

Standing over Aleia, staggering and pained was Kanda. Mugen leveled at her and one hand lay on the ground, twitching and bleeding. “No.” was all he said.

She sprang at him like a wild animal, rage overtaking her. She hit him full force before he could block her, they rolled to the ground. His grip on Mugen lost and he latched onto her neck instead.

“I’ll choke the evil life out of you bitch” he growled at her.

She raked her nails down his face and kneed him in the balls. His grip loosened just enough that she was able to break free. She kicked Mugen into the air, catching it. “Killed by your own innocence. Rich Yu”

She pointed the blade at him, then lunched forward but suddenly stopped. A look of confusion etched on her face. Her now golden eyes lowered to her chest where a glowing blade stuck out.

Behind her Aleia hissed in her ear, “How does it feel bitch?”

When Kyria made to turn, Aleia viciously twisted the blade, then yanked it upwards. Mugen clattered to the floor and Kanda struggled to take it up. He met her eyes and read something odd in those shimmering golden depths. ‘

“Di…didn’t want….to….be alone” she gurgled. Kanda swung Mugen with all his might and Aleia closed her eyes. She heard the dull thud and felt the hot spray that followed.

A labored breath and she cracked open her eye. Kanda was staring at her. “I know” was all he said.

She felt the tears rush over her lash line and spill over her cheeks, “I’m sorry Yu” she whispered to him. He stumbled closer to her and it seemed when he reached her his great strength gave out. He toppled into her and they both crashed to the floor.

His weight was all but gone. His hipbones dug into her. His cheeks were sunken. He was so malnourished that she doubted he could be saved. So she did what she could at that moment. She lay pinned under that sickly weight and listened to his labored breaths.

She gently brushed his matted hair from her face but Kanda Yu was no longer in the land of the waking.

For nearly a month, they kept him sedated. Allowing his body to sleep and heal, the IV delivering much needed nourishment and fluids to him. Komui had even ordered a mild weight gainer to be introduced in the second week. After the third, they allowed him to eat solid foods in small amounts. When he wasn’t eating, he was sleeping.

Aleia couldn’t bear to be a painful thought to him. So she stayed away during his waking hours. When he slept, she remained near his bedside. She had noted that the Lotus in his room had long since lost it’s petals and yet here he was. Clinging to life. The strange Om on his body had not faded. She was uncertain what that meant. Only one thing was certain, that his life was no longer tied to the life a blossom under glass.

Well, she thought as she stroked his hair, that was something.

A firm hand caught her wrist, drawing it down from his brow. His dark eyes locked with hers and he pressed a kiss to her open palm. Then his eyes closed and he slipped further into sleep.

It struck her that they had begun that way, and she smiled even as her tears welled up. He was strong now. He would live. She had turned all her research over to Komui and they were starting to feel confident that Kanda’s days were only as numbered as he wanted them to be.

She rose from the bedside. “Take care of yourself Kanda.” She pressed a kiss to his brow and straightened. She left his sick room, Lavi leaned against the opposite wall.

“You’re certain about this?” he asked.

She nodded, “I just want to go home.”

He knew better than to argue. And he has promised. So with a small nod, he turned and led the way to the waiting carriage. She had written a small letter for Kanda. Allen and Lenalee promised to give it to him, when he was well enough and if he asked about her.

She hugged them both, sucking back tears.

“Will you ever return?” Lenalee asked.

“Don’t know.” Aleia answered honestly, “I used to think I missed the life of adventure and danger. But the only thing I want now, is my little house, my two cats and a lifetime to forget what hurts.”

“That doesn’t work you know” Allen chimed in gently.

She laughed softly, “I know. I have to try though.”

“You could stay…”

“I can’t. All we do it hurt each other it seems.”

“But”

“Lena please don’t make it harder.”

They had let her go and she climbed into the carriage with Lavi’s assistance. Lavi didn’t ask, didn’t speak when she cuddled against his side, silently staring out the window. He merely wrapped an arm around her and tried to be a silent comfort.

This was wrong though. He knew it.

He saw her home and settled. He even stayed a few days before returning to the Order. She had waved and smiled brightly from her garden gate. And he had known it was killing her.

Now as he walked the stone halls of the Order he thought that it seemed lifeless without her.

Kanda had woken to an uncertain future. He’d never really had that before. A future. Komui had given him all of Aleia’s careful research. Asked him to fill in any gaps in the information. To his surprise Kanda had done so.

Kanda moved in a hazy state. He wasn’t happy, he wasn’t surly. He simply was. Lavi and Allen noticed it right away. The way he paused outside of her old dorm room door. Head cocked as though trying so very hard to hear non present sounds.

How he lingered in her forgotten office, his hands moving over her jars and shelves. How from time to time he would lift the hand written pages to his nose. He missed her. His world was empty. Far emptier than it had ever been.

He was painful to watch.

And one day he didn’t appear in the halls at all.
