There was no question about the victor in this battle. Seiten Taisei seemed to have taken his fight up another level as he administered blow after blow on Kougaiji. Seiten Taisei kicked Kougaiji across the room and into one of the pillars near the pentagram, continuing his assault on the helpless redhead. With one final scream, Seiten Taisei punched Kougaiji hard in the chest, the pillar crumbling as he was launched through.
Tsuki heard Homura make a remark to himself. Tsuki turned to him, the battle going on below them began to shake the floor. What was this intense energy that she suddenly felt radiating from the room below them? It felt like Shien, but it felt like something more. The feeling suddenly became all too familiar when suddenly she realized Shien had removed his power limiters.
“What the... he hasn’t removed his power limiter since the war!”
If their opponents were so formidable that Shien finally released himself from his limiter after all this time, perhaps she should unleash her true potential. Tsuki hesitantly put a hand on her gauntlet, unsure of how she would react once the surge of power coursed through her body, but she was just as sure that she would need to remove them in order to be equal against Seiten Taisei.
“Tsuki,” a warm voice called out, placing a hand on her shoulder, “do not go that far.” Before she could protest, Homura pulled her in close against him. “I appreciate the thought,” he whispered to her, “but I still need you.” Tsuki felt a blush on her cheeks as he pulled away, turning back to the fight at hand. “Shien can handle himself.”
Tsuki nodded as Homura held her close, shielding her from the concrete pieces that rained over them from the fight in front of them. The thunderous waves of spiritual energy from the room below continued to shake the floor before the battle calmed.
Tsuki felt her heart sink as she felt almost suffocated by the overwhelming rage from Shien. She had to maintain her focus, but was increasingly concerned. What would cause him to summon so much spiritual energy for a group of demons that didn’t seem to be so threatening? Were they really putting up that much of a fight?
The sound of Kougaiji’s ragged breathing and dry coughs broke her train of thought, bringing her back into the room. Seiten Taisei grabbed the redhead by the collar of his jacket, lifting him high above his head as if he were a child bored with his doll.
“I fear your friends will die soon,” Homura called out to the priest.
“Don’t worry, they’re not my friends. Those guys are just my servants. That’s all.”
Homura chuckled, knowing they were more than just servants. Tsuki clicked her tongue, knowing Sanzo was lying through his teeth. They both knew the priest cared for the guys down there, but more than anything he was concerned about the Great Sage.
Tsuki turned to the portal, the doors whined and creaked as it pushed against its confines before popping into their shape. She wondered how long the portal would be open and if they would miss their chance if this continued on for much longer. Tsuki felt another violent chill flow through her veins. Homura stepped away from her, sensing the same thing she did.
“Shien, no!”
Tsuki turned to him. What was wrong with Shien?
“It looks like I’m going to have to break my promise.”
It was Shien! His voice resonated within her mind.
“No! Don’t do this,” Homura vocally replied back.
“Shien, you can’t,” Tsuki cried out. No, she was in disbelief. In this connection, she could feel his spiritual energy swiftly disappearing.
“I’m afraid it’s time for me to move on.”
The color drained from Tsuki’s face. Was he somehow defeated in battle? But that’s impossible! “Please, Shien,” she begged, “we are all going together! You can’t leave when we’re so close!”
Homura stood in silence for a brief moment before replying back to Shien. “Then move on to the new world,” he shouted. Tsuki turned to him, dumbfounded. Was he injured that badly?
“I’m sorry. For what it’s worth, it was such a beautiful dream while it lasted. And Hakkai, it was an honor to lose in battle to such a worthy adversary.”
In that moment, Shien closed his connection with Tsuki and Homura. They stood in the brief silence before a whirling high pitched sound began to grow louder before a thunderous explosion overcame the tower. The violent shaking threw Tsuki off her feet, in shock and filled with sorrow, she harshly landed on her hands and knees. The room fell silent, the air was still. If there were ever a moment for the Great Sage and the priest to catch her and Homura off guard, now was a perfect opportunity.
“Xenon,” Homura cried out. Tsuki looked up at him.
“What? Xenon?!” Tsuki suddenly felt a new energy from the room below them. She didn’t recognize this feeling. It was no one that was already in the room, and it was impossible for anyone to have snuck in without her noticing.
“Homura,” Tsuki began, “What’s going on? What’s he doing?” Homura turned away from Tsuki, facing the doors and sighed. Was...was this feeling from Xenon? Did he remove his power limiter?
“That’s enough,” Tsuki shouted, tears of burning rage stinging her eyes as she got back up to her feet. Seiten Taisei turned his attention to the half breed, whose aura began to buzz throughout the room.
“Tsuki,” Homura began.
“This has to stop,” Tsuki continued. “We’ve come too far to lose this chance to get through those doors. And I refuse to go through those doors without another comrade.” Tsuki turned to Seiten Taisei and grounded her feet, staring defiantly at him. “I will not permit you to stand in our way!”
Seiten Taisei barred his teeth at her, a fist pulled back as Tsuki readied herself. Seiten Taisei threw his fist forward, a powerful aura vibrating off his skin as it began to glow with his Qi. Homura materialized between the two, Seiten Taisei’s fist connecting with his barrier. The Great Sage let out a scream as the force from Homura’s barrier pushed him back.
“Homura,” Tsuki cried out, “I can handle him!” Tsuki gazed up at the broad back that was in front of her, briefly admiring the sight before stepping to his side.
“Stop,” Homura firmly replied, his eyes burning with intensity as he glared at the Great Sage. “I cannot allow someone so important to me to be killed.” Seiten Taisei stared the two of them down before holding one palm out to each of them, an energy ball quickly forming before launching towards them both. Homura and Tsuki both jumped opposite of each other, avoiding the attack.
Seiten Taisei launched himself at Tsuki. She quickly brought her arms up to protect her head as he kicked at her face, the impact sent her across the room. She let out a scream as she flew through the air, landing hard. Pushing herself up on her hands and knees, Tsuki noted the increase in power and energy radiating throughout her body, the cracks in her gauntlets had deepened from the attack, small pieces loosened and broke away from the band. Before she had time to analyze her situation further, a shadow loomed over her.
Tsuki looked up over her shoulder to see Seiten Taisei. She quickly snapped off a small plant grenade from her belt and threw it at him. Seiten Taisei caught the grenade in hand before crushing it. Thick moss and vines flowed out from the shell, covering his hand, growing and weaving tight tendrils along his arm. Seiten Taisei was unalarmed as the vines continued to expand.
The intensity in his eyes was intimidating as she positioned herself upright, quickly reaching for a short knife from the side of her boot and swiped the blade at him. A thin tendril of energy arched out from the tip as Seiten Taisei dodged her attack. Tsuki picked her legs up, using the momentum to roll backwards and get back on her feet. She lunged at him, the point of the blade aimed at the Great Sage as she slashed at his torso.
Seiten Taisei raised his arm, using her repeated attacks with the blade to cut through the vines. The blade was hot, searing through the greenery and lightly burning him before his arm was completely freed. Seiten Taisei immediately swiped at Tsuki, the tips of his nails gliding through the fabric of her qipao dress. Tsuki let out a scream as she jumped back, the pressure from his nails apparent on her skin, but no blood was drawn; the encounter was too close for her liking.
Her eyes began to glow as a few more pieces from her power limiters were shaken loose. The roots of her hair began to darken as the faint outline of demonic markings appeared along her face. The room began to shake as a burst of energy emitted from her body. Seiten Taisei was a little surprised at the spiritual energy suddenly radiating from the half breed. Had she been holding out on him this whole time?
The remaining pillars by the pentagram shook loose from their foundation, vibrating harshly as they broke into sections before hurtling towards the Great Sage. He dodged them all with ease before she increased both the speed and frequency of stones being thrown at him. A large section of the pillar connected with Seiten Taisei in the shoulder. A pained grunt left Seiten Taisei’s throat as he turned, dodging the other sections of pillar launched at him.
Tsuki jumped high in the air, floating in place as she bit the handle of her blade. She grabbed the last of her pods from her belt, cracking them between her hands. Her energy radiated with the vines that grew as she manipulated them around each arm to create armor to protect her gauntlets. Sharp thorny tendrils reached out along each forearm.
Grabbing the blade, Tsuki prepared herself once more as Seiten Taisei leapt up towards her, his scream of frustration and bloodlust ripping through the air. The glow from Tsuki’s eyes intensified as she launched herself towards him, slashing the heated blade at him when he was within reach. The tendrils from her arms stirred as they stiffened, springing out towards the Great Sage as they left marks along his cheek, chin, and throat.
Seiten Taisei lifted his leg, kicking Tsuki hard in her side. Though she felt the attack, it wasn’t as painful as previous attacks from the Great Sage. Tsuki hooked an arm around his leg and gripped it, the vines moved from her armor and constricted around his leg. Seiten Taisei roared in frustration as he picked up his other leg and kicked Tsuki in the stomach. She cried out in pain, bringing her back to her senses. She released his leg and flew towards the wall, the vines snapping from her arms as the markings on her face disappeared, her roots going back to silver.
Tsuki landed hard, holding onto the spot Seiten Taisei kicked. Her breathing became ragged as she struggled to remain conscious. Seiten Taisei saw her as a threat now. There was more power behind that kick than any other attack he had previously delivered to her. She could still taste the power her limiters gave her only a few seconds earlier. What happened? She shouldn’t have control over her demonic blood.
Seiten Taisei slowly lowered himself back to the floor, staring intensely at Tsuki who returned the look defiantly. Seiten Taisei glared at the half breed, neither one backing down or looking away. He opened his hand up to Tsuki, a ball of energy forming in the middle of his palm. Tsuki refused to break eye contact, not paying any mind to the attempted threat. If he was going to go all out in this fight, so was she. Tsuki focused on the newly found energy radiating throughout her body from the gauntlets continuing to flake and break away.
Both of her eyes burned a brilliant red as the air around her began to stir violently, her hair falling from its confines and whipping around her face. Tsuki’s entire body was engulfed in an illustrious light before she leapt high in the air, maneuvering the vines around her arms and recreating the wooden gauntlets, extending a vine out in each hand to use like whips for long range attacks. Seiten Taisei took aim, squinting his eyes as Tsuki glared at him. The light emitting from her became blinding as her body distorted. Homura shielded his eyes, unable to focus on the half-breed’s silhouette.
Homura had to think fast. The energy that permeated the room was that of an angry demon. He batted at the debris thrown about the room as he cried out Tsuki’s name, fearful of the tower collapsing and ruining centuries of preparation. Homura brought his arms down, struggling to focus on the angry half breed as Seiten Taisei curled his lip in frustration, launching his energy blast at Tsuki.
The half-breed raised her arms, crossing them in front of her as she prepared to block Seiten Taisei’s attack. The vines reacted to her as more of the growth quickly flourished, creating a barrier in front of her. At that moment, time began to slow. Homura squinted his eyes at the faint image of the angry figure within the light. A loud crash echoed throughout the room as the blast exploded against Tsuki’s green barricade, shredding it before the blast burnt out.
Homura’s eyes grew wide as he called out to the faded figure who he could see turned towards him as he called out. As wisps of hair flew around her face, Homura’s heart sank, a face of familiarity exuding warmth formed within the silhouette and began to come into focus. His heart began to pound, overwhelmed with the desire to protect her from the Great Sage as he leapt up, reaching out in desperation, calling out her name once more.
“RINREI!”
The figure of his beloved turned towards him, smiling warmly back at him as he desperately reached for her before a pained cry tore through the room. A clawed hand burst through Rinrei’s chest. Homura’s eyes widened in horror, blood sprinkling down on his face. Seiten Taisei held her in place as her body spasmed, blood squelching from the wound as she gagged on air, struggling to breathe. Rinrei weakly reached up to the hand that was through her chest, coughing up more blood.
Homura’s eyes grew wider as Seiten Taisei tore his arm from the body, confirming his victory. Rinrei hovered in place for what seemed like an eternity before her body fell limp and began falling. Homura let out a bloodcurdling scream, his entire being filled with sorrow as he caught Rinrei in his arms, holding her close to his chest as he landed gently.
The room was silent except for a light chuckle emitting from Seiten Taisei. Homura glared up at him as the Great Sage licked at his blood soaked hand from his wrist, to the pointed tip of his nail. Homura cradled Rinrei in his arms, tears stinging his eyes. He surveyed the wound in her chest where the Great Sage’s arm penetrated her. The injury was severe and he began to panic and tremble, blood covering his clothing as he racked his brain trying to think how to save his beloved. His body shook as he analyzed the amount of the blood covering her body as Rinrei weakly reached an arm up to him, cupping his cheek.
“Ho..mura...”
Homura delicately pushed her hair out of her face as she struggled to lean up. Homura leaned in close to avoid her straining her voice. Her pained breaths felt like daggers in his own heart
“Our friend—ship.... my.... love,” Rinrei lightly coughed, blood pooling from her lips as a tear streamed down Homura’s face.
“Shh,” he softly replied.
“After...every....thing... did you even care....about me?”
Homura stared down at her, confused. Were there two voices overlapping each other? The image of Rinrei faded as she brought her lips up his. The cold taste of copper coated Homura’s lips as Tsuki maintained eye contact.
His eyes widened as Homura’s mind raced with images of Rinrei before suddenly, he was standing in an open field. It was the field he and Rinrei frequently visited together when they came to the Lower World. He looked across the clearing and saw Rinrei standing far from him. She gave a heavy sigh, a look of disappointment on her face as she softly shook her head.
In his heart, he knew that she knew everything he had done to Tsuki. The look on her face was suffocating as Homura opened his mouth to speak. “What have you done,” she asked, her voice reverberating in his mind. The weight of such words made him feel hollow.
“Rinrei... I was just-I understand this may not have been what you expected of me, but I had the best of intentions!”
Tsuki approached Rinrei from behind, standing next to her. Tsuki had a look of disappointment, but also relief having been freed of him.
“See? Tsuki is fine,” Homura pleaded. A pained expression was still painted on Rinrei’s face as she crossed her arms, not buying into any of his excuses. Homura’s heart sank at Rinrei’s expression as he felt a pit in his stomach at the weight of his actions.
He took small, timid steps towards her. “Rinrei.... It was the only way we could be reunited. I will see you soon; both of you,” he explained further, desperation in his voice to clarify himself. “The others were prepared to die for our cause, and so was Tsuki. Just ask her!”
Both women squared their shoulders, staring back at him. Sweat began to lightly pool and collect along his forehead. Tsuki’s features were firm, her eyes hard as she stared at him. Homura stopped in his tracks, a lump forming in the back of his throat as they both looked him down.
“Homura...” Rinrei finally spoke. The way she spoke his name, it was thick with pity. Homura panicked, his mind was an incomprehensible barrage of thoughts. The harder he struggled to find the words that would defend him, the more they evaded him.
“You didn’t tell me the truth,” Tsuki spoke out. The weight of the hurt and betrayal in her voice felt heavy on Homura’s body.
“N-no, it wasn’t that. I-I just…” Homura stuttered as he looked away. He knew exactly what he was doing to Tsuki and knew her feelings for him wouldn’t waver no matter what he did. When he pulled his eyes back up to the women, he saw Tsuki’s features change. The calm look of loyalty she always displayed to him transitioned to a sort of pain, her face showing clear signs of betrayal.
Homura felt a sharp pain in his chest that made his knees shake. He closed his eyes, taking in a few deep breaths to compose himself before looking back at the women across the open field.
“Rinrei,” he began, “I will not apologize for what I have done. I am only sorry that I have not met any of your expectations of me. And Tsuki…my dear friend, Tsuki…” His words trailed off. His silver tongue would do him no good in this situation. Both women would see right through him.
Rinrei sighed heavily, heartbroken by his words as she grabbed Tsuki’s arm. They both turned from him, walking away. Homura reached a hand out, calling out to Rinrei as his surroundings were swallowed up by darkness. He cried out, trying to regain his footing before he began to fall. Tsuki looked at him over her shoulder, she mouthed something to him. He couldn’t hear her, but continued to helplessly reach out to both of them as Tsuki turned away from him. The only two women he ever cared about blended into the darkness as he continued to fall, consumed by nothingness.

Homura’s eyes snapped wide open as Tsuki pulled her lips away from his, her blood stained his lips. His eyes darted around for a brief moment, the sensation of his soul being forced back into his body was overwhelming as he remembered where he was.
What was that, another hallucination? Homura’s mind was so confused, that entire encounter felt so real to him; like he had finally seen Rinrei again. But with Tsuki there with her, did that mean…. Homura closed his eyes, taking a deep breath before focusing back on Tsuki. She stared up at him with such fury, he knew there was nothing he could say or do that would absolve him of his wrongdoings.
“Tsuki,” he began “I do not expect you to forgive me.” Tsuki pressed her lips together, holding back tears, they weren’t meant for him anyways. “I promise you that I will make a place for you in the new world. I will come find you, even if it takes another few centuries, I will find you and we can be together; all three of us in paradise.”
Without warning, streams of tears poured from Tsuki’s eyes as she parted her lips. Barely above a whisper, she faintly breathed, “I hate you.” Homura’s breath caught in the back of his throat as her words reverberated throughout his mind. His eyes widened as his mind flashed back to moments ago when she was staring at him, walking away with Rinrei. The words that she mouthed to him: I hate you. They vibrated hard against his skull as his body trembled. Tsuki exhaled softly as her body fell limp in his arms. Her fingers drew blood down Homura’s face before falling to her side.
Tears gently flowed down Homura’s face as he looked at Tsuki. He meant what he told Rinrei; he wasn’t sorry for everything that he had done. He needed Tsuki, and she wouldn’t have helped him had he told her the truth from the very beginning. Homura sighed heavily as he delicately closed Tsuki’s eyes, holding her one last time in his arms.
A malicious cackle brought Homura back to his surroundings. He looked up, seeing Seiten Taisei across the room, still staring at the both of them as he gently laid Tsuki down. Homura rose to his feet, leaving the Great Sage to Sanzo as he walked towards the threshold of the New World.
