Again, thanx to all who reviewed. It's great how you continue to follow this story. I'm on a roll right now so updates will be everyday from now on. There might be some lemon in the following chapters...I don't know. I haven't made up my mind yet. Keep reading.
The moon was bright that night even though it was still a few weeks before full moon. The soft moonbeam illuminated the path as Megumi made her way towards the tall figure waiting for her under the cherry blossom.
He had his back turned and he seemed to be looking at something in the distance. His clothes were gently swirling in the wind but the man himself stood solid. From her position, Megumi saw a glimpse of Sagara Sanosuke rarely seen by even his closest friends. His was a quiet kind of strength and Megumi realized right at that moment -- studying him from behind -- that she cared for him.
It was a new kind of feeling and shocked, she halted in her steps. Hearing her approach, Sano turned to face her and Megumi looked up at him, eyes searching. The amber held such a look of pure innocence and beauty in them that Sano had to close his own to block out the tantalizing picture she made. He couldn't give in. Finally, when he felt that he had reined in his emotions, he looked at her again and his eyes were cold and hard as granites.
Megumi was momentarily halted by his frozen expression. "Sano?" She ventured, her hesitation obvious.
Even his name on her lips was like music and Sano had to fight hard not to give in. Megumi approached, lifting one hand to touch him, her eyes roving his features. When he felt the coldness of her skin against his, Sano knew that he had lost. He was a captive of her eyes and he was helplessly drowning in their amber depths. Just when he was about to give in, the smiling face of his friend, Yoita flashed before him and he was filled once more with that feeling of betrayal. From her own words, she knew how he felt about opium and yet, conveniently enough, she neglected to mention her ties with the syndicate.
"Sano," she said, "tell me what's bothering you."
The innocence of the question was his undoing and he stared down at her, willing himself to hate her for her deception. He said to her harshly, "Who are you?"
The question caught her by surprise so that it took her some time to answer. "I already told you my name."
"But who are you really, Takani Megumi?" He stepped closer to her then, intimidating her with his tall frame. His next question was even more surprising than the last. "Why is the Oniwabanshuu after you?"
Megumi's eyes widened at the mention of the syndicate. How did he learn about them? Watching her like a predator, Sano goaded, "What did you think? That I wouldn't know? Wouldn't catch on?" He suddenly grabbed her, holding her shoulders as if to shake her. "Answer me, goddamnit!"
"S-Sano, you're hurting me!" Megumi cried but her words fell on deaf ears.
"Or did you think that once I've...tasted your charms, that I would submit?" Sano went on, intent on inflicting pain or at the very least pierce through her armor of cold reserve to touch what's inside of her...that part which she never showed him. Except that one time. He trailed his gaze insultingly over her body, eyeing her from head to toe.
Megumi gasped, then her brows met and she slapped him. The sound seemed to reverbrate in the silence of the night as both of them stood staring at each other. Megumi was breathing heavily as she glared at him. Sano merely chuckled as though the sting of her slap did not affect him at all. Then in a tight voice, Megumi said, "I didn't tell you about the Oniwabanshuu because I didn't think it was important. Make no mistake of thinking that the intimacy we shared once entitles you to everything that I am."
Sano dropped his hands to his sides. His voice seemed to be lodged in his throat as the truth of her words began to sink in. Megumi continued, "Despite everything, we are strangers, Sanosuke-san." And with that, she turned and began walking away, head bowed.
Sano stared after her, a crushed expression on his face. He had been hurt before but he never expected his heart to bleed with this one act of turning away. He hesitated. Then deciding to throw caution in the wind, he said in a soft voice, "We don't have to be, Megumi."
