Chapter 15: Look For Me in the Rain
A week crawled by, Alex’s daily routines hampered by the ever-present Tres and his momentary sidekicks. She doubted there was a force in the world that couldn’t be stopped by Tres, but she took the time to flirt with Leon and Hugue and to discuss important scientific matters with William. All in all, it was nice to have friends, but she’d become accustomed to being alone in her years of travel and suddenly having constant companions was a bit trying. After work Alex returned to her hotel room accompanied by Tres and Leon. During one of Leon’s long-winded battle stories, Alexandra interrupted his colorful narrative to ask if he would go to a corner store and get her some pain relief medication, claiming her ribs were aching even now. Chivalrous as ever, Leon was quick to leave in search of the desired medication. Once he’d left Alex turned to look at Tres. He was standing beside the door, staring straight ahead.
“Tres?” He didn’t verbally respond, he merely turned his gaze toward her. “How human are you?”
“I am not human, I am a machine.”
“But you have a synthetic body, meant to mimic that of a human. Actually, if your speech weren’t so stilted and you never told anyone you were a ‘machine’, I doubt you would be taken for anything other than human.”
“I do not understand your use of the word stilted in reference to my speech. My speech is derived from a vast database of English words and grammatical matrices.
“Precisely. You sound like a dictionary. A dictionary that’s ready for combat.” Alex chuckled.
“How might I modify my speech so that it will be less stilted?” Alex laughed again.
“You could start by using slang and stop saying things like ‘affirmative and ‘acknowledged’.”
“How should I respond if not with ‘affirmative’?”
“How about saying ‘ok’? Here’s, let’s try. Hey, Tres! Can you get me a soda?”
“Ok.” Tres did as he was instructed, as was expected. However, when he responded with the simple word ‘ok’, it came out more like two distinct letters with a minute pause between them.
“That was good, but let’s try it again and say it altogether and smooth, like you don’t care about what you’re saying. So, Tres, can you get me a soda?”
“Ok.” Alex clapped her hands and laughed, hearing Tres use his first bit of slang with mimicked ease.
“All right, from now on listen to how I speak with others and try to copy that when you’re not taking assignments from AX members or Lady Catherina, ok?”
“Ok.” Alex whooped in delight and turned in her chair to look at Tres. “So, back to my question. How human are you?”
“I am not human, I am--”
“Yes, yes, a machine. What I want to know is,” Alex searched for the right words, “how much of your body functions as a normal man’s?”
“I have the capacity for all normal bodily functions.”
“All bodily functions?” Alex grinned.
“Yes, all bodily functions. I can eat, sleep--” Alex was too excited to let him finish.
“Yeah yeah, but what about se--”
Just then the door swung open and Leon came trudging in with a bag and a rather soggy mane of hair.
“Here’s your stuff.” He shook his hair like a mighty wildcat, thrusting the bag at her chest.
“Thanks, Leon! Sorry, I forgot it was raining.” Alex bit her lip and adopted a look of sincere regret. Leon instantly de-bristled and shrugged the incident off. Alex settled back into her seat and the room grew quiet.
“Miss Alexandra, you were going to ask me a question. I suggest that you finish now that Sir Leon has returned.”
“Oh, it’s nothing, Tres. Just forget I said anything.”
“Ok.” Leon’s look of disbelief was priceless. Alex looked over her shoulder at Tres, her face a strange mixture of delight and slipping restraint. She took in Leon’s large rounded eyes and gaping jaw and began cackling, holding her sides. Leon looked over at her as she clung to the chair to keep from falling to the floor.
“Are you the one that taught him that?”
“You bet your sweet ass.” Alex barely contained another laughing fit by biting her lower lip.
“That’s a cute trick.”
“Isn’t it? I rather enjoy it.” Alex got up and leaned on Leon, looking at Tres who just stared back with a blank expression, same as always.
“Well, I hope Hugue’s shock is as entertaining as mine.”
“Hugue?” Alex’s face lit up.
“Don’t wet yourself. Yes, Hugue. He’s taking the night shift with Tres. If I didn’t know any better I’d say you were bored with me and that Hugue was the greatest thing you’d heard about all week.” Alex grinned.
“How could I not have fun with you, Leon? You know, if you wanna have some real fun, you could hang around and wait for Hugue. I’m sure we could all find something fun to do.” Alex winked at him and he grinned back at her.
“Is that so? I don’t know if I could stand sharing.” Alex threw her head back and laughed.
“Naw, I don’t think Hugue could either.” Just then a soft knock came at the door.
“Identify yourself.” Tres’s voice was back to it’s normal deadpan tone.
“Tres, it’s Hugue.” Tres opened the door and Hugue and Leon exchanged a few pleasantries before Leon turned to leave.
“See you soon, Hugue.”
“Indeed.” Leon winked as he left and Alex was grateful that Hugue wasn’t looking at that particular moment.
“See you later? Shouldn’t it be see you tomorrow?” Hugue’s face grew serious and Alex wiped the smile from her face.
“Alexandra, we are going to meet with the rest of the AX tonight. You must be moved. Abel has found evidence that Cain has scouts stationed near the Vatican, awaiting the right moment to abduct you. He believes that will be soon, and so, you must be moved. We are all going to gather tonight and your move will be orchestrated by us all. We must move you out of Rome, and it must be tonight.” Alex’s face paled at the prospect of meeting with Isaac again.
“I see.”
“Don’t fret. With all of us guarding you, you will be safe.” Alex tried to force a smile when she truly felt like being ill.
“I just can’t get the thought of his cold immovable hands out of my mind.”
“Rest assured, as long as I am there, he will not lay those hands on you.” Alex wrapped her arms around Hugue and he nuzzled into her ever-fragrant hair, sighing deeply.
“I’m scared, Hugue.”
“I know, Alexandra. We will lay our lives down for you.”
“That’s why I’m scared.” The two fell silent, not knowing what else to say.
“Affirmative.” Tres’s voice startled them both and they broke apart like they’d been caught making out by a teacher.
“Jesus, Tres, you scared the crap out of me!”
“Shall I catalog blasphemous slang as well?”
“No!”
“Catalog slang?” Hugue’s questioning look was cute and Alex couldn’t help but smile.
“Who are you saying affirmative to?”
“Sister Kate has informed me that we are to leave now to meet the group.”
“Already?” Both Hugue and Alex asked in disbelief.
“Affirmative. Father Hugue, we must move.” Alex grabbed the suitcase she’d never really unpacked and they were out the door, Hugue and Alex exchanging nervous glances. She was glad she’d redressed after work in standard issue black leather pants and a simple black silk-paneled corset. Her black leather full-length coat was the only real protection she had against the bitter winter night that was steadily falling around them. At least it was no longer raining. Alex’s heartbeat quickened, not because they were practically running through the streets of Rome, but because she could feel something on the wind, something that made her skin crawl. Tres had pulled his guns out, ready for battle as soon as they stepped out into the street. Alex shivered from a cold blast of wind and gasped as the wind died.
“Run little terran. You cannot hide from me.”
“No!” It was a quiet hissed, but both men snapped to attention at her proclamation. She stared at them each in turn, unable to understand how they couldn’t have heard it. She was positive that silky deep voice belonged to Isaac. “Well what are you waiting for, gentlemen? Run!”
Alex ran down the cobblestoned streets at full tilt, desperate to reach Abel. She could feel Isaac’s presence and knew he was close, yet he wouldn’t close in. She knew he was playing mind games with them, waiting until she was within site of the others to take her, but she could only pray he underestimated their collective powers. Alex let up a silent prayer, to the lord, to the angels, to whatever force had always listened before: please, just let me reach Abel. Hugue and Tres were right on her heels, yet she couldn’t hear their footsteps; she only heard the thunderous and erratic beating of her heart.
“I can be merciful. He will be the last thing that you see in this world.”
Just as they rounded a corner, the Vatican’s main courtyard opened at the end of a long street and Alex could already see the others gathered in the light from a full moon. Alex’s heart truly skipped a beat, so exhilarated was she to see them. Tres and Hugue screamed something Alex couldn’t hear over the blood rushing in her ears and the ragged breaths being ripped from her heaving chest. She ran towards them as they ran towards her and, for a split moment, she felt something near salvation as she realized she was only a breath away from being safe in Abel’s grasp. A sinister ungodly laugh ensnared her senses as she felt herself lifted up and away from the confused AX members.
A cold tight grip materialized around her waist and, looking down, she found herself caged by the stone arm of Isaac himself. He chuckled in her ear and they hovered there above the courtyard just long enough for Alex to catch Abel’s eye. The look of desperation on Alex’s face seemed to signal the slowing of time for them all as they watched her being lifted high above them, Isaac materializing behind her. His demonic laugh sent chills through them all and before anyone could even react, Alex shrieked with all the terror that wracked her very soul.
“Abel! Help me!” Abel snapped out of his momentary shock and transformed instantly, taking to the air. Before he could reach them though, they began to fade, like a memory carried on the wind.
“Alex!”
“Look for me in the rain!” Alex screamed with all her might, though it seemed like the barest whisper as the image of she and Isaac disappeared while his fingers closed on the spot where her hand had been mere moments before. Abel didn’t land, so much as he crumpled to the ground in a resounding sickening thud. The others gathered around him as he peeled himself off the stones of the courtyard, blood tears streaming down his face. He raised his face to the sky, flinging his wings behind him as he poured all his agony into a single strangled noise. His anguished cry rose to Heaven itself, and obliging, the heavens parted and rained down upon them, its cold deluge providing no comfort that night.
Okay, so that's the end of the first section of the story. The next will be kinda dark and disturbing. Fair warning. at any rate, it's almost 4 in the morning and my fingers ache real bad from writing. I may take a break for a few days, so if you don't see chapters posted, I didn't die! check though, I might change my mind. and as always...
