Words you may not know:
*Soba – Buckwheat noodles.
*Noren – Sign curtain hung at shop entrance.
Cho retired the horses for the evening at the livery, which was not too far from the storefront. He wasn’t expecting to enjoy himself as much as he did with Horie, but it did seem to Cho, that the two of them hit it off and had a lot in common with one another.
Earlier, Cho tried to wriggle his way into the meeting Horie planned for the men, but Horie saw no purpose for Cho to be there. One good thing about that, was the fact that Cho’s workday ended somewhat early. Nevertheless, Cho gathered some vital information for his assignment and hoped that Saitou will recognize his competency.
“Hmmm, it’s too early to see if Saitou’s at home.” Cho mumbled to himself. “I reckon I’ll head on to the Akabeko and get some tempura and soba. It beats walking clear over to the other side of town to that other place with all the purty women-folk.”
Cho turned the corner, parted the *noren at the doorway, and stepped in. There was an early crowd that day. The Akabeko was one of the more popular eating establishments in town. Everyone eventually found out about its special sukiyaki dish, and Cho was no exception.
The Kyoto man sighed knowing that there will be somewhat of a wait until he gets a chabudai. He scanned the room to see if there was a way to shorten his wait.
“Damn, will you lookie at that… if it isn’t the ole Rooster-Head waiting for a table too,” Cho said out loud so that Sano would hear him above the chatter and clatter in the bustling restaurant.
Sano turned around; almost wishing his hearing was going bad, or that he was actually in a bad dream. “What’s going on, Broom-Head? Don't tell me there's shortage on pig-slop that forced you to dine up-class tonight?”
Cho walked toward Sano and passed a few others who are waiting for tables. “Hell, let’s cut this shit out and be civil. I’ll even pick up the tab if you’re willing to let bygones be bygones,” Cho propositioned.
“Hey, this is the first time I hear you talking sense. Does this mean the sake is on you too?” Sano imposed, thinking that the sake will help Sano sit through the meal with Cho.
“Sure, why the hell not?” Cho agreed to the bargaining. “I’m in the money now, so I may as well dish it out even if my date for tonight is you.”
“Fuck you!” Sano rejected the implication straightaway. “I’m far from being hard-up to succumb to going out on a date with you!”
“Calm down, Rooster-head,” Cho inserted quickly. “Can’t you take any form of joke at all?”
“Sure I can, but just not down that road,” Sano said with a sickening expression on his face.
“And how are you gentlemen doing?” Tae welcomed the two bickering young men. “Sanosuke-san! I haven’t seen you in a long time. Not since you and Mr. Fujita were here together. I hope all is well with you.”
Sano gave Tae one of his biggest smiles. She’s always been one of Sano’s favorites and the feeling was mutual for Tae. “I’ve been making some changes and it’s been keeping me pretty busy.
“Cho-san, I welcome you to the Akabeko!” Tae bowed a greeting. “It is good to see you again as well.”
“Always a pleasure to see someone from my hometown in Kyoto, Tae,” Cho bowed his greeting to her.
“Let’s get you two seated and fed,” Tae said and led the way to a little nook toward the back of the restaurant where there was less hustle going on.
The two young men placed their orders for soba, tempura, sukiyaki and, of course, hot sake as Tae wrote their orders down.
“It’ll take awhile for the tempura. One of the cooks had to leave early today, but I’ll hurry your sake out, so you can at least get start relaxing,” Tai said with a wink.
Before Tae left Sano added one more request laughingly. “Hey Tae... make sure you put all of this on Cho’s tab tonight!”
Tai looked over at Cho and he confirmed Sano’s request with a nod. She nodded, accepting the order and then rushed off to get their order started.
Using his arms as braces to keep him propped up, Cho leaned back. “Now I’m really curious. If I’m not mistaken, you appeared out from Saitou’s house, very early in the morning and now, if my hearing is as keen as it usually is, Miss Tae just said you were in here with Saitou."
Sano shrugged his shoulders, “Yeah, so what about it?”
Cho sat up straight, then leaned forward toward Sano. The Kyoto man sunk his eyes straight into Sano's almond shaped browns, studied him for a few seconds and said, “If that's all to it, I could pass it off as coincidence and such, but… I do recall you getting upset as hell, when I told you that Saitou was alive here in Tokyo. Then, you stopped by the station and gave me give a worthless note and had me give it to Saitou . What’s up with all of that?”
“And how the hell did you know my note to Saitou was worthless? What? Broom-Head turns SNOOP? Not that I ever thought you weren’t a snoop.” Sano tried to turn the conversation around to avoid being pressured to answer.
Tae interrupted at the perfect time. “Here you go, I brought you two bottles to get you started since the tempura will take a little time.” Tae set the bottles on the chabudai, poured two servings out for the men, and hurries off to tend to the other customers.
A Sano wasted no time in downing his serving, and Cho did the same. Sano just as quickly poured another round, and then another for the both of them.
“Well, I better slow up with my drinking,” Cho said as he gulped down his third, while Sano had already begun to fill his cup for the fourth. Cho watched Sano's reaction carefully as he continued and said, “I can’t go over to Saitou’s house tonight feeling too much of the sake.”
“Huh?” Sano instantly stopped pouring the sake and looked up at Cho, just as Cho predicted he would. “What the hell are you going over to Saitou’s for?” Sano demanded to know.
Cho chuckled and enjoyed watching Sano’s reaction. “I’m going over to Saitou’s because he is expecting me, that’s why I’m going, Rooster-Head.” Cho sipped at his sake this time, instead of gulping at it. “Why don’t you cut the shit and tell me what’s going on between the two of you?”
Tae carried the meal over to the nook and served the two tensed men. “Now, if there be anything else you might want, just flag me down,” Tae said smiling as she poured more sake for the men, and then continues onto her busy rounds.
“Dig in, Rooster-Head,” Cho said to Sano as he filled his chawan with rice.
“I’m right behind you, Broom-Head,” Sano replied already with a tempura shrimp tail hanging out of his mouth.

Kenshin entered the gathering room at the main house carrying a pile of laundry. “That bath felt great, the water was perfect,” he announced feeling refreshed. “Sano did a great job giving that bathhouse a good cleaning.”
Kaoru smiled and agreed, “He sure did a wonderful job! I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so clean. Sano even dusted and scrubbed the window slats! I’m wondering why there is such a big change in Sano. He’s never been this motivated, ever!”
“Whatever Sano’s motivation is, I hope it will always remain for him. I hate to see him reverting back to his old ways as Zanza–the fighter for hire. That is no way to make a living, even if the times are difficult.”
“Will Aoshi be going back to Kyoto tomorrow?” Kaoru asked Kenshin as she knelt to gather the remaining dishes to take back to the kitchen.
“Hai, but he will be back in two weeks to meet with Saitou again. It depends on the situation that they’re investigating and what develops-that it does,” Kenshin spoke with a grin and squinted eyes.
Kenshin and Kaoru, carried their loads out to the kitchen together and tended to the last tasks of the day. Life had been going well since they returned to Tokyo. Kaoru was hopeful that Kenshin would soon be thinking about settling down, and perhaps staying at the dojo with her to help run things. She wasn't sure how Kenshin felt about that, but she tried to hint at it several times anyway. Kenshin always seemed to avoid discussing the topic in depth with her, which was beginning to discourage her.
“Kenshin?” Kaoru caught Kenshin’s kimono sleeve halting him from adding the laundry to the ever-growing pile to wash outside.
Kenshin stopped in his tracks and looked at the tiny woman standing beside him. “Yes Miss Kaoru?” Kenshin noticed the concern in her eyes. The same concern he'd seen so many times across her face when Kaoru was being bothered by various reasons.
“Should I prepare myself for your involvement with what Saitou and Aoshi are working on this time?” Kaoru bit her bottom lip expecting to hear the worst.
“Miss Kaoru, please don’t worry. Don't allow let what happened with Shishio haunt you forever. Saitou and Aoshi had not mentioned anything to me about their assignment, and I’m sure if they needed assistance, the police commissioner would have contacted me about it by now. It looks like Saitou and his men has everything very much under control.”
Kaoru sighed deeply. “I’m sorry Kenshin, it’s just that…” Kaoru looked down from Kenshin’s eyes, leaned closer to him, and rested her head on his arm. “…It’s just that I am so afraid you will leave again and be in danger.”
Kenshin sighed as well, closed his eyes and wished that life wasn’t so complicated. His heart sank deep inside himself knowing that he could never hurt Kaoru with worry again. Kenshin set the laundry down beside them and took Kaoru into his arms and held her close to him.
“Miss Kaoru,” Kenshin spoke gently. “You should not worry about my safety, that you shouldn’t. I will not leave the way I did before, but I need time to settle a few things within myself before I can be sure that what I do is the best for everyone concerned." Kenshin lifted Kaoru’s chin up with his finger and placed a gentle kiss upon her forehead.
“Hai,” Kaoru nodded, “I understand that Kenshin. Whatever it is that you need to work out I just hope it can be done safely,” Kaoru said and giggled a bit to lighten the mood.
“Not to worry Miss Kaoru, I am not going anywhere soon. There is a lot to do here at the dojo and I am available if the commissioner should need my assistance,” Kenshin said in his attempt to ease Kaoru’s anxiety.
“I guess I’m being silly,” Kaoru giggled nervously this time. “Let’s get our chores out of the way. Miss Megumi told me earlier that she’ll teach me how to make mochi-cakes, so she's is expecting me over there after dinner."

Horie and Mitsu entered Mitsu's room at the inn, both exhausted from their workday. Their meal and soak at the furoya helped them to relax. Horie wasn't quite ready to call it a night just then, and took the liberty of inviting himself in, extending his welcome in Mitsu’s presence.
No sooner than upon entering the room, Horie took Mitsu by her arm and pulled her close to him. She obediently surrendered to his will even though her body was yearning to rest. Mitsu focused on Horie’s sharp piercing eyes and sighed. “Hisomu-san?”
“Shall I have you right here Mitsu-san?” Horie asked her as he pulled her into his arms and against his body that had been starving for her all day. “Does Mitsu-san feel how strong Hisomu-san is?” Horie breathed out a rush of air as he pressed his stiffening member against her.
Mitsu giggled, “I shall see for myself if Hisomu-san feels strong,” Mitsu said while gliding her gentle fingers down past Horie’s waist to position her hand upon his groin. “Yes!” Mitsu exclaimed, “Hisomu-san is very strong,” she said as she coddled his bulge that laid beneath his kimono.
Horie longed to be touched by Mitsu, so when she slid her hand to feel him, Horie practically jumped out of his skin. “Mitsu-san, I have to have you now!” Horie urgently spoke his need for her and pushed her backward to the settee.
While Mitsu continued to rub Horie through his kimono, he began to strip the clothing off of himself first. Horie felt as though his body was on fire, and Mitsu was the only relief for him. Besides, the kimono was in the way between his aching shaft and her capable fingers.
Mitsu quickly slipped her eager hands between the openings of Horie’s kimono and began searching for the last tuck of his fundoshi to start the unveiling. Horie made her task easier when he dropped his kimono to the floor. He pulled the fundoshi’s tie loose, and then, like some kind of wild race, they both tore at the wrapping to get to his flesh.
Horie’s fundoshi joined his kimono on the floor and without delay he grabbed a hold of Mitsu by her arms and passionately kissed her deeply, breathing hard while his tongue drove its way inside of her mouth. Horie was driven now, being swallowed up by his desire to possess Mitsu totally.
Mitsu meekly gasped, losing strength rapidly as Horie continued to push his weight against her as he followed his desire to get even closer to Mitsu than he already was. She lost her balance for a second and staggered back a step, but found the back of the settee directly behind her that kept her from losing her balance entirely.
“Now, Mitsu-san… I must…now,” Horie said between gulping in air as he pushed away from their kiss, swang Mitsu around until her back made contact with his chest and pushed her to lean over the back of the settee.
“Hisomu-san,” Mitsu moaned as she felt her own lust burn between her thighs desiring to be spread and taken by the strong willed man.
Like a poor man suddenly finding himself just inches away from a treasure vault, Horie pulled at Mitsu’s kimono until all that had been in the way between he and his burning flesh was now resting on Mitsu’s bent back.
Horie took a moment to step back and admired Mitsu perfectly shaped rear. Flawless beauty seldom ever exposed in this manner just above what Horie was eager—so very eager to penetrate. The sight was almost too overwhelming for Horie to passively enjoy. The driven syndicate leader instinctively grasped his burning spear in his hand while he viewed his goal.
“Hisomu-san,” Mitsu lustfully beckoned as she waited for him to join her.
Horie was in no hurry, for his mind was focused on the sight before him and the sensations that surged under his fingers through his body as he prepared himself for the entry. Moments passed and Horie finally stepped up directly behind Mitsu and closed his eyes, so not to miss any sensation as he guides himself into her.
This was the moment Horie had been waiting for. He began very slow, desiring to lengthen whatever time he could to teeter-totter on the passion that was taking him far away from the reality and stresses of life. For Horie, having sex was an escape, and retreat not too often enjoyed, due to his constant strife for power.
Horie’s mind filled with images of the past as he darted to and fro behind Mitsu. His mind most always filled itself with such images of blood and death whenever Horie experienced any form of pleasure. He had given up trying to separate the two long ago and resigned to the fact that, for Horie, the passions of love and death were one and the same.
A flurry of images flooded Horie’s thoughts. He labored toward the brief freedom from the mental pictures that he experienced during the peak of his climax when all such images dissolve and a sense of quality to his being became reality. Perhaps this was what urged Horie to maintain an intimate relationship with Mitsu. She was Horie’s retreat, his sanctuary, and during those times of passion, Horie found a brief sense of wellbeing.
“Hisomu-san,” Mitsu uttered between her insistent gasps of pleasure. “Hisomuuuuu….” Her gasps turned into pants that announced her arrival.
Mitsu was not alone, for Horie met his moment as well. Mitsu was indeed Horie’s refuge and rescuer.

Kenshin slid his room’s door shut, indicating his retirement from the day. With Kaoru staying over at Megumi’s for the night attempting to learn how to cook mochi, and the others being out and about, it was an early night for Kenshin.
He pulled his futon out and prepared to bed down for the night, but he carelessly knocked over his container of drinking water in the process. Kenshin sighed deeply and began to pick up the pieces of the broken container. He carefully picked up the smaller pieces, then started sweeping up the tiny fragments out the door. He quickly noticed Aoshi walking toward him down the dojo dorm porch hall.
“Aoshi!” Kenshin greeted the tall, fine-looking man.
“Himura, ”Aoshi’s sharp blues scan over Kenshin’s activity. “You are aware I will be leaving Tokyo tomorrow?”
Kenshin stopped his sweeping and set the broom beside his door. “Yes, I’m well aware of that, and I was planning to speak with you when you got in tonight.”
“Hmn,” Aoshi agreed, “It seems that we need to at least know where we stand in regards to each other.”
Kenshin invited Aoshi into his room and slid the door shut. “We can talk here,” Kenshin motioned at Aoshi to sit. “I can run over to the main house and get some tea if you like,” Kenshin offered.
Aoshi shook his head. “Don’t bother, thank you.”
The two men sat, not saying a word for a short while. Both of them didn’t want to start off on the wrong foot, and they weren't quite sure how to begin. It was Kenshin who spoke first.
“I have given our situation much thought and I will be straight forward, if you don’t mind,” Kenshin said sounding very serious.
“You have my attention,” Aoshi nodded encouraging Kenshin to proceed.
Kenshin sighed deeply. “If it were several years ago, I would not have considered others and I most definitely would have taken advantage of this situation.” Kenshin took a deep breath, looked into Aoshi’s eyes and continued, “Aoshi, we cannot do what we desire if it means hurting those who depend on us the most.”
Aoshi nodded, “Hmn, I agree. It does not mean that I have decided on a future with Misao, but I do recognize her desire to have a future with me.”
Kenshin and Aoshi stared at each other. Kenshin’s eyes were wide and searching, as he placed his index finger vertical to Aoshi’s lips to silence him. Kenshin leaned over until his lips barely touch Aoshi’s ear and whispered. Aoshi pulled away from Kenshin far enough to look into Kenshin wide violet eyes and silently, he nodded.
“I knew deep down inside you could not resist just this once,” Aoshi said with strength in his voice as he took Kenshin by the shoulders and pushed him backwards onto the floor. Kenshin’s back struck the floor and slid a couple feet just short of hitting the door. Aoshi’s weight atop of him slowed Kenshin’s momentum and saved the door.
“Just this one time, Aoshi,” Kenshin exhaled audibly. “We can share this moment together just this once, and then we must control our lust.”
“I will agree to anything, Himura, but right at this moment, I must have you and satisfy my craving before I leave tomorrow.” Aoshi moaned as though passion had no limit for the two.
Kenshin pushed Aoshi off of him quickly and quickly sat up. Aoshi sat as well, facing Kenshin.
“I need you to understand something before we go any further,” Kenshin said breathing a little heavy from the heat of the moment. “You must understand that this is only for ‘lust’ sake.”
Aoshi fell silent for a moment and then spoke very seriously, “Himura-san, are you saying that your heart is not a part of this at all?”
“If we are to go any further, I need you to know something very important. The reason why I cannot pursue an intimate relationship with you is because — I love Sano Sagara.” Kenshin paused and let the quietness soak in for a moment. Then he continued and said, “I am saying this to you not just because you should know…” Another pause…
“Himura, you can tell me, I am listening,” Aoshi grinned cunningly.
Kenshin continued, “I am telling you all of this because—I want to teach Sano a lesson!” Kenshin quickly reached over to the door they were sitting beside, and yanked it open exposing Sano crouched over, huddled as close to the door as he possibly could have gotten himself.
“DAMN IT, AAAAAHHH! FUCK!” Sano screamed at the top of his vocal range as realized that the two men had set him up.
Kenshin held his stomach in hysterical laughter, while Aoshi sat there next to him exposing a wild smirk on his face.
“You assholes! How the hell did you know I was out here? SHIT!” Sano questioned as he tried to calm himself down.
“Sano… Aoshi and I would not be alive today if we didn’t know how to read a person’s footsteps. This will teach you not to eavesdrop, because it results in such a baka, ahou look on your face!” Kenshin continued to laugh out loud.
“Shit,” Sano shook his head feeling a bit embarrassed for being caught as easily as he did. “I guess I wouldn’t be much of a spy, huh?”
Kenshin and Aoshi look at each other then back at Sano and shook their heads from side to side.
