The next day, Dino knocked politely on Squalo’s door before he stepped in, finding the other curled up in his blankets like some sort of cocoon. The bags under his eyes were much darker than usual, and his face and eyes were red. The blond could tell he was utterly exhausted, and was too tired to keep fighting anymore.
“Hey, Squalo...” Dino was tender as he spoke to his friend, shutting the door gently behind him. He moved to the bed, sitting on the end of it as he reached out, smoothing silver strands out of the younger’s eyes. “Not feeling too flash, I can see.”
Squalo shook his head. “That bastard... won’t even listen to me anymore... He just ignores me if... if I try and apologise...”
“You have nothing to apologise for,” the taller man promised. “No one should apologise for telling someone they love them; it’s not your fault.”
“It feels like it is...”Squalo mumbled. He lay where he was, not wanting to move in the slightest; even talking was taking a lot out of him. “I should’ve... kept my mouth shut...”
“Squalo, don’t think like that; it’s his fault he can’t look after you properly.” Reaching into his pocket, Dino grabbed the photo he had found the other day at his home. He fingered it for a few seconds before he pulled it back out, handing it to his friend. “Anyway, I came across this not long ago. I thought you might want a copy so I had Kyouya make one for you.”
Squalo took the photo, looking at it with dark eyes. He squeezed them shut for a few seconds, trying to stop the fresh wave of tears from escaping down his cheeks. “...I... used to smile a lot, didn’t I...?”
The blond nodded. “You were always smiling; had one of the brightest smiles I’ve ever seen.”
The long-haired male sighed at these words before he whispered, “How long has it been since I’ve smiled again...?”
Hazel eyes looked down at the question, knowing he couldn’t answer that truthfully without hurting his friend. “Well... There’s always the future, Squalo; you might smile again one day.”
“Doubt it...” Squalo closed his eyes, slipping the photo beneath his pillow. “Thanks, Bucking Horse... I forgot that even existed...”
Dino, again, reached into his jacket, this time resurfacing with his pet turtle, Enzo. “Enzo wanted to say hi, too.”
The younger man snorted. “You’ve still got that fucking turtle? Thought you’d have sat on it by now.”
Rubbing the back of his head sheepishly, Dino looked away; he had sat on his turtle far too many times to count.
The patient knew his friend well, and he couldn’t help but roll his eyes. “Oh, fuck, Bucking Horse. You’ll probably kill it one day.”
“I hope not.” The blond played with his turtle happily, humming as silence fell between them. He was thinking about his childhood, remembering all the fun he had had with Squalo. He could understand if his friend had forgotten all about it, but it would hurt nonetheless. “Hey, Squalo?”
“What?”
“Remember when we first met?” There was a hopeful tone in the stronger male’s voice, but he knew not to get his hopes up; Squalo had severe depression, and not even the therapists or other patients truly knew how deep it went.
Squalo was silent for a few seconds before he shook his head. “No...”
“We got paired up for a school project,” the blond clarified. “We didn’t know each other because we’d only just started having classes together that year, but the teacher put you with me because she said you were a problem student and didn’t work well by yourself; she wanted me to keep an eye on you and make sure you kept out of trouble, basically.”
“...”
“We ended up sharing a desk, and you invited me back to your home to talk more on the project. We were walking back there and I tripped in front of a car. You called me a – well, some colourful words – but you also laughed about it once you’d dragged me off the road.”
“...Oh, yeah...” Squalo could remember calling the older male a ‘fucking idiot who can’t even walk right’, but at the same time, he had found it hilarious, just glad that there was enough distance between them and the car for the vehicle to stop in time.
“And then when we got to your home, your parents invited me to stay for dinner, and I ended up breaking some of their good china.”
“Dumbass.”
“That’s what you said that night, too!” Dino’s eyes shone with excitement, having truly missed his friend during all this. “But then we became really close, and we were always together. Remember what happened to our project in the end anyway?”
“Not really.”
“We finished it, put it on the USB to play on the teacher’s computer, and I accidentally deleted it from the USB when I went to open it on her computer. I then somehow reformatted the entire laptop trying to get the file back. Man, she wasn’t happy at all; never let me touch her laptop again.”
Squalo nodded, remembering small things about his life before he had been abandoned here by the family who used to love him. “...I miss when I was happy... Dino... I wish... I never became depressed... I miss my family, too...”
“I know...” Dino lay down next to his friend, putting his turtle down on the ground so that no one rolled on top of it. “I’m really sorry this happened to you, Squalo... I really have no idea how you must feel; I only know what Kyouya’s told me...”
“I wish I could go home...” the silver-haired man whispered, tears leaking past his eyes once more. “I want to go home... I only had Xanxus, and now... Xanxus is gone... Just like my family... Everyone leaves me, Dino... Everyone... Am I really... that bad...? Why...? What is it about me that drives everyone away...?”
“You have never driven me away, Squalo,” Dino soothed. “You never will, because you’re my best friend and I love you.”
“Sometimes it doesn’t feel that way...” Squalo sighed. “Sometimes it feels like no one loves me... Even... before Xanxus and I had the fight... Sometimes I felt alone even with him... I want to get out of here... I hate it here so much...”
“I’m sure you would...” Dino rolled onto his side, scooping Enzo back up to slip him into his jacket. “Stay here, Squalo; I’ll be back. I need to go ask Kyouya something.”
Squalo was silent as he watched his friend leave the room, curling up into a ball as he cried. He didn’t understand why he had been cursed with this life; sure, he had been somewhat of a delinquent, but it wasn’t as if he were out mugging old people or molesting little kids... He had done what teenagers had done, and... one morning, he just happens to wake up with the strong urge to cry.
Life wasn’t fair, and it wasn’t something Squalo wanted to keep living.

“Kyouya?”
The skylark in question had just been leaving solitary, having been the one to deal with Byakuran’s previous attack on Fran while Tsuna stayed in the infirmary with Belphegor, keeping him calm and relaxed.
“What, Cavallone?” Hibari locked the door behind him before he moved to walk with his boyfriend.
“May I take Squalo out of the facility for a few hours?”
“No.” The raven didn’t hesitate to answer.
“Why not?” The older male frowned, knowing his lover could be rough around the edges, but did care about the patients.
“He has suicidal and violent behaviour; I wouldn’t let even the baseball herbivore take him out.”
“You let him take Fran into town. Why can’t I take Squalo? I wouldn’t let anything happen to him.”
“The green herbivore went with a staff member and another patient who could supposedly keep him calm and relaxed, and he still ran off and got himself raped.”
“But Squalo is my friend, Kyouya, and he needs to get out of here. Kyouya, you know you can trust me with the patients... Please? I won’t let anything happen to him, I promise.”
Hibari glared at the taller male before he gave in, knowing Dino could be persistent if he wanted to be. “Alright, Cavallone, but if one thing goes wrong, I’m holding you accountable.”
Dino nodded, leaning down to kiss his boyfriend. “I love you, Kyouya~”
“Hn.” Hibari pushed the taller male away, not used to showing their affection for each other outside of their own home. “Keep him in line or I’ll bite you to death.”
“Will do, Kyouya. We’ll be back later.”
Hibari watched his boyfriend leave, noticing the way the other seemed to be over the moon about one of the patients finally having time out of the facility. Why would someone be so happy for someone else? It just didn’t make sense.

Squalo, once he had been told Dino had gotten permission to take him into town, had cooperated, despite the fact he really didn’t want to get out of his bed. And now, driving out of the staff parking lot, Dino beamed at the younger.
“Is there anywhere in particular you want to go, Squalo?”
The smaller man thought about the question for a few seconds before he nodded. “Hospital...”
“Hospital?” Dino indicated to the right, turning into the direction to get them there. “You mean you want to go see Takeshi and Hayato?”
“Just the Takeshi brat...” Squalo turned to stare out of the passenger window, having not stepped foot out of the building in eighteen years; it was amazing just how much had changed from what he remembered. “Don’t get the wrong idea; he’s just stayed with me at the hospital heaps of times, so I figure I should return the favour.”
“That’s kind of you, Squalo.” Dino smiled, knowing his friend had always had a heart, even if lately it was buried deep down inside of him to the point Squalo himself forgot he even had one. “I’m sure that’ll make him very happy.”
Squalo didn’t reply; he instead just closed his eyes, trying to get a bit of sleep before they arrived at the hospital.

Yamamoto had been staring up at the roof with dazed eyes, trying to bite back the pain he was in; his body was aching, a strong burning sensation seemed to be seated in every fibre of his being, his head felt as if it were going to explode, and he couldn’t even feel his limbs; he had no idea if he was moving them or not, no matter how hard he was trying.
It was hard for Yamamoto, replays of the accident continuously flashing before his eyes, the sounds he had heard seconds before it went black ringing in his ears like a never-fading echo. He could hardly speak, and he found it difficult to comprehend what was being said to him, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t think; no, all he could think about was how he should have been more stern with Gokudera and taken from the keys from him, and then this would never have happened.
Yamamoto knew he shouldn’t blame himself as he couldn’t have foreseen this happening, but he wasn’t in proper control of his emotions, and though his thinking was clearer, it still wasn’t very articulate.
The young man wanted Gokudera. He wanted the other more than anything; the way he was feeling was probably nothing compared to how the silver-haired male was. He could only imagine just how badly the smaller man would be beating himself up, knowing Gokudera the way he did – Gokudera was a stubborn person, far too proud for his own good, but when it came to someone he did care about, he could feel just as bad as anyone else for something he had done wrong.
“Takeshi?”
Dark eyes blinked as they recognised his name. He couldn’t quite put his finger on who had called for him, but he knew he was familiar with the voice from somewhere.
Mumbling something as close to ‘Who’s that’ as he could, Yamamoto sighed when he realised that his murmur had been unintelligible.
However, the therapist’s guest seemed to know what Yamamoto had been asking, as the soft voice next said, “It’s Dino, and I have Squalo with me.”
“Squ...alo...” Yamamoto closed his eyes, wishing he could at least talk properly; he had never felt so helpless before. “...Di...no...”
The Japanese male could hear two sets of chairs scraping against the floor as his visitors sat on them, but how was he supposed to be a good host when he couldn’t even see them?
“Wow, brat...” From beside the bed, Squalo looked at his lap, just glad that he wasn’t the one in the hospital bed for once. “...This is really shitty...”
Yamamoto hummed in response, knowing there was no point in trying to reply verbally.
It was silent between the three for a while, none of them really knowing what to do in this situation. In fact, nothing was said until a nurse stepped in, a remorseful look on her face.
“Yamamoto-san?” The woman waited until she knew she had her patient’s attention before she continued on. “We’ve had the specialist consult the x-rays and form a prognosis and... the damage done to your legs and arms are too great. We don’t expect a full recovery – in fact, any recovery at all. It may take years for you to regain strength and mobility, but only with dedication to performing exercises and going to physical therapy daily.”
Yamamoto was silent, but both Dino and Squalo knew what this meant; Yamamoto’s most favourite thing in the world was baseball – he had been playing it for well over ten years! – and had finally achieved his dream of being on a professional team. To have this ripped away from him...
As expected, a loud sob filled the air, coming from Yamamoto’s bed. The man had a single tear running down his cheek, his eyes shut tight as he realised what this meant for him and his future.
The nurse gave her condolences before she left, leaving the three to their own devices. Squalo, who knew what it was like to be in utter despair, stood up. He sat on the edge of the bed, reaching down to grab the cold hand lying limp against the blankets. He squeezed it before he leant over, ghosting his fingers down the side of his therapist’s face, careful not to agitate any of the stitches and smaller wounds that littered the soft flesh.
Yamamoto stared into Squalo’s eyes, tears falling from both, and in that moment, the two had gotten more comfort from each other than they had in years of working together.
Squalo knew what it was like to take life for granted, to want nothing more than to die one way or another, but in this moment, he could see just how lucky he was to still be walking around and doing things for himself, hating everything about him when someone who absolutely loved life and everything to do with it was laying in a hospital bed, his future torn away from him because of someone else’s mistake.
Squalo had never felt as selfish as he did now, knowing that while he had a perfectly good body, Yamamoto would probably give anything just to have his own back in working condition.
Was it really fair for the silver-haired man to try and end his life when Yamamoto was fighting for his own...? He knew it wasn’t.
