Chapter 18
‘away’
Suspended by magic, the cupful of water swirled up into the air and formed itself into a hovering globe over Yue’s open palm. Wary as always, Touya couldn’t help but watch in fascination. Such magic was only talked of in his home village, and Yue manipulated it with ease. Before his eyes, the floating water shrank and hardened into ice.
“Over all things wind and water I have jurisdiction,” Yue explained, during the transformation. “And so this water is mine to control, and even freeze.”
“Can you melt it back into water?”
“I cannot.” The candid admission surprised him, but Yue didn’t seem bothered by it. His eyes, so like the forming ice in his hand, regarded Touya calmly. “I have the power to control water and freeze it, but not to warm it. Fire is not my jurisdiction.”
“But you make that fire in the fireplace every night -”
“No, that is the magic embedded in the room, it does not respond to my orders.”
That surprised Touya even more than the last admission, but before he could ask any more questions Yue touched his chest lightly with the new chip of ice. Coming right on his bare skin as it did, Touya started and flinched.
“Hold still, slave. Place your hands back on the rug.”
Reluctantly Touya did so, an action that kept his chest forward when he would have rather drawn it back. Abruptly cold against his warm skin, the ice trickled downward and left a trail of goosebumps in its wake. He drew a sharp breath and curled his fists into the thick white material beneath him, fighting not to shiver.
“You feel it do you? A sharp stimulation of the flesh brought about by the cold, that delicious tingle shooting through your blood?”
“No,” Touya growled, intent on staring hard at the floor and willing his body not to react.
“Slave. I’ve a mind to begin punishing you for every lie, and I do not think you would like being spanked.”
“What!” Touya turned his head so sharply it hurt, and he stared in disbelief. “Only children are ever -”
“Children and naughty slaves, no matter how old they think they are.” Wicked glee sparkled in Yue’s eyes and Touya narrowed his. Between his body and the warmth of the fire the ice was melting steadily now, dripping cool wetness down his skin and provoking an involuntary shudder. “You feel it?”
“Yes,” Touya muttered, after some hesitation.
“That wasn’t so difficult now, was it?” Yue leaned closer and licked a droplet or two from his skin, and he gritted his teeth to keep from gasping. It was a lost cause; the moment the ice touched his swelling manhood he cried out.
“Didn’t like that, I see. Don’t worry, I will make it right.” The ice disappeared from his skin and Yue’s hand replaced it, coddling and stroking the flesh that had shrunk in horror from that cold ice. Reflexively Touya moaned. Yue’s hands moved between his legs and spread them, then levered him back onto his back. When Yue took him into his mouth, he moaned again and arched his back.
“You like this?”
“Y- No.”
Yue lifted his body to one side and slapped him roundly on his flesh, prompting another yelp from Touya.
“I told you.”
Stung more by humiliation than the actual blow, Touya snarled and tried to fight free of Yue’s grasp. This resulted in nothing more than Yue pinning him hard to the floor with a hand on his chest and a warning note in his words.
“Next time, you will tell the truth.” Touya bit his lip and kept silent, swallowing the retort that he knew would only earn him another one. Yue smiled when he saw that, and hooked an arm under Touya’s knee to draw up the leg. Yue was always telling him not to hold his breath but he couldn’t help it, and he did so now, bracing himself.
But it was not so bad as it used to be. He exhaled explosively once Yue was in him and dropped his head back to the floor, panting. After more than a week of it he could not believe that his body had already become used to it, and yet Yue did not seem to be taking any more care to be gentle. It was not as painful as it once was, though, and when Yue moved inside him Touya could almost feel…
Harder. Faster. Touya gulped for breath and clutched at Yue’s arms, dimly aware of the pulsing rhythm they shared when it came to this point. He knew that Yue would soon climax and he was readying himself for it when a shadow crossed his mind.
It was so dark and alien that Touya’s eyes popped open, for once totally distracted from their sexual activity. Yue turned his head, just barely, with narrowed eyes, and Touya almost opened his mouth to ask. But in the next second it was gone, quickly as it came, and Yue released with a low and contented sigh inside him.
“You may clean yourself now, slave.”
Touya hesitated, but even as he opened his mouth the strange feeling had faded from his memory. Perhaps it was only his imagination after all. Stiffly he got up and limped into the bathing room, wiping himself down with a moist cloth and splashing his face. When he returned to the room, Yue was unwinding his plait with what might have been a thoughtful expression.
“Bring my hairbrush.”
Touya collected it from the wardrobe and knelt by Yue’s side, beginning the familiar chore near the ends and moving upward. So ritual were his actions that his mind had already moved on, and he was thinking longingly of sleep when Yue spoke.
“Tomorrow when you wake, I will be gone from the castle.”
The hairbrush clattered loudly to the floor and Touya’s head jerked up. “What?”
“I will be gone,” Yue repeated, as matter-of-factly as he said it the first time. He raised an eyebrow at Touya’s shocked expression. “Do I take it my slave is dismayed?”
“No,” Touya spluttered, when he recovered his voice, “and I’m not your slave. But why? Where are you going?”
“That is not your concern. My hair, slave.”
Touya fumbled for the brush and returned to his task, mind racing. It seemed so strange to think of this catle without Yue in it, but now that he thought back he remembered that Yue had been gone the night he arrived here. “How long?”
“I cannot say. Two sunsets at least, perhaps three.”
“And what am I supposed to do while you’re gone?”
“Nothing is expected of you but good behavior. You may spend the day as you please in the upper levels of the castle, but you must return to my chambers after dinner. Ralen will have his instructions, and I will be asking for a full report when I return.” Yue eyed Touya sternly from his sideways angle. “I’m sure you don’t wish to subject yourself or your sister to any unnecessary punishment.”
Touya scowled and made a show of concentrating on the brush. But his heart had begun to beat faster, and though he struggled not to show it he was wondering if his chance had come at last. Perhaps now he would find a way to escape.
“Since your ‘invasion’, my guardsmen have tightened their watch, and are now much more alert to disturbances around my castle,” Yue continued, casually, probably guessing Touya’s thoughts. “They’ll be extra vigilant during my absence, of course.”
“Of course,” Touya echoed, meeting Yue’s glance without flinching. He and Yue both were silent until he’d completed his task and returned the brush to its shelf. The fire was already dwindling when he turned around.
“So you do extinguish the fire, then?”
“With water droplets too small for your eyes to even see,” Yue supplied, brief amusement flashing across his face. “Now be a good slave and go to sleep. You’ll want to be well rested when I return.”
“I bet,” Touya muttered, and sank to his knees on the rug. The chain clapped itself around his ankle, Yue moved off in the direction of his bed, and the fire faded to a dull glow. Still Touya did not sleep, but it was more than the possibility of escape that kept his eyes open.
He was wondering if Yue’s departure had anything to do with that peculiar feeling.
Nothing seemed out of place when he woke, the next morning. Yue’s bed was empty like always, breakfast and the rest of the day passed like any other. Sakura was positively glowing at dinner, as she had been ever since she began going outside in the days. The improvement was so drastic that Touya found himself being grateful to Yue all over again every evening – and wondering what prompted the allowance. It couldn’t have been kindness. So why?
“Night, Onii-chan.”
“Good night.”
They exchanged their kisses, and Touya followed Ralen back to Yue’s chambers. It wasn’t until he’d returned to the room, empty and silent save for the fire, that Touya even let himself believe Yue was really gone. The great blue chair seemed so incomplete.
“Miss him already?” Ralen inquired, when he caught Touya looking at it.
“Of course not.” Touya shot him a withering glare and extended his wrists expectantly.
“Yes?”
“Aren’t you going to unlock me?”
“Mm, Yue didn’t say anything about that.” Ralen shrugged and smiled before retreating back out of the room and swinging the door closed behind him. “Do try to sleep well, even if you’re lonely.”
Touya’s fists tightened with temptation, but he remained where he was and Ralen disappeared from view. This time, Touya could hear the unmistakable sound of a key turning in the lock. So it was Yue who’d been sealing the door shut before.
His absence filled the room; Touya had never been in here alone at night. He was thankful for the fire, crackling away in the fireplace without need for its master, though he would scoff at the notion of being afraid of the dark. That wasn’t it. The room was just so… still.
Well, he didn’t have to stay in here if he didn’t want to. Taking advantage of his new freedom, Touya moved outside and dragged the bench close enough to the railing so that he could sit and watch below. The moon was just a sliver of light in the sky, Terriene’s valley shrouded in shadows. Far below the city glittered with lights, reminding him of the first time he’d ever seen the city, and brought a lump to his throat. If he could have only glimpsed his future…
For hours he watched, but there was never a moment that some patrolling guardsman wasn’t in view of the front gate. The apparatus that opened it crouched in the darkness, looking complex and forbidding. Given time, Touya knew he could figure it out, but that was time he might never get. No doubt it was also very loud. On the other side was territory unfamiliar to him, the only road leading straight down the hill to the city. Pursuers on horseback would catch them easily enough. A path through the forest was the only option, but Touya was at a loss how to get himself and Sakura past that wall. He didn’t dare rely on attacking any of the guardsmen again. When he tried, and he would someday, he must be sure of success.
Moon and stars moved across the sky, too gradually to be noticed. Touya dozed, then woke up shivering. Much as he would have liked to, the spring night was just too cool for sleeping outside. Chains clinking, he dragged himself back into the bedroom and shut the door. Though he could have slept anywhere he liked, including the bed, Touya did not even contemplate the idea. He went straight to his rug and curled up in the firelight. His last thought before sleep was spent wondering where Yue was.
The next day he watched Sakura for a short while before leaving the balcony and wandering the halls a bit. So accustomed had he become to his solitude, up here, that when he walked into a room and found someone he was taken aback.
“Oh, excuse me.”
“Oh!” The blonde who’d been wiping at the windows jumped and whirled around, clutching her cloth to her chest. “Oh, I’m so sorry, sir. I did not know you wished to use this room; I’ll leave at once. I -”
“You don’t have to leave,” Touya interrupted dryly, “so relax. I’ll go. Better yet…” He spied an extra cloth draped over her bucket and snatched it, wringing it free of excess moisture. “I’ll help.”
The girl’s eyes went circular with astonishment. “Oh no, sir, I could not. It is not your duty to clean the castle.”
“Yeah, but I’m bored.” Not giving her a chance to argue, he shuffled to the other window and started cleaning. “I used to help clean my own cabin all the time, back home. It doesn’t bother me.”
She waffled indecisively, no doubt torn between his sureness and what she knew was forbidden. In the end, he won.
“Er, very well. If that is your wish, sir.”
“We’ve been over this. It’s Touya.” He eyed her thoughtfully and tried to remember the name. “And yours is… Aya. Right?”
For some reason her cheeks turned slightly pink, and she turned her attention back to her chore with renewed concentration.
“Yes, that is correct. I’m flattered you remembered.”
“No problem.”
They finished cleaning the windows in silence, and when she started on the furniture Touya followed suit. She watched despairingly.
“Are you sure you -”
“Yes,” he said firmly, and cast about for a topic that would keep her mind off his errant task. “So, Aya. How long you been here?”
She looked faintly surprised at the question, but pursed her lips in thought. “Three months now, I think.”
“That’s it?”
“Well, the others have been here longer… Lara the longest. Seven months, I believe.”
“That’s not a very long time.”
“Master Yue keeps no permanent slaves,” she answered matter-of-factly. “When he has lost interest we assume the role of castle servants, and when a new purchase does the same the oldest is released.”
Touya’s cloth was moving in slower strokes as she spoke and at the last word he stopped cleaning completely. “You mean he lets you go?”
“Oh yes. Master Yue is frightening, but very generous. He even pays us in gold for our service, before granting freedom. Most of the girls don’t like it, cleaning and so on, after being raised as bred pleasure slaves. I didn’t like it so much either, at first, but now I do.” Becoming more comfortable with Touya’s company, she’d begun to chatter and paid no attention to the disbelief etched across Touya’s face. “It’s the first time I’ve ever had to learn something other than the trade of the bedroom. I’ve especially enjoyed learning how to cook. When I earn my freedom, I want to take my payment and open a tea shop in Terriene.” She blushed when she caught Touya’s look and lowered her eyes, her voice becoming softer again. “Excuse me, I did not mean to bore you with such nonsense. It’s only a silly thought.”
“Uh, no. It’s not silly. I just- I didn’t expect Yue to let his slaves go.”
“Always.” She smiled wanly. “It seems our freedom may be slightly delayed now, though. Master Yue has taken such exceptional interest in you.”
“He what?”
“You have been here for over two weeks! To serve him so long is quite uncommon. I myself served him only twice.”
A peculiar discomfort twisted inside Touya’s stomach, and with effort he forced it down.
“Oh,” was all he could think of to say. She was removing various articles from a wall shelf now, preparing to wipe it clean.
“You are certainly not like any other slave I’ve ever known. The other girls, and boys, they only think of themselves and how to take what they can. But you care more for your sister than yourself. I think you must be very kind.”
Touya cleared his throat uncomfortably. “Only for her sake.”
“I think it’s beautiful. Perhaps Master Yue does too; I can think of no other reason why he would grant you such a priveleged sleeping space, I -”
Touya snatched her elbow before he’d consciously decided to move, halting her arm mid-swipe.
“Say that again?”
Blue eyes looked back at him nervously, and she quavered an answer. “I-I said I think perhaps Master Yue finds your kindness, um, appealing -”
“Not that. About the sleeping.”
“My lord has granted you a priveleged space,” she repeated.
“You mean, it’s strange that I sleep in his room?”
She nodded quickly.
“Has anyone ever…?”
This time she shook her head.
Nausea returned with a vengeance, crawling outward from his stomach and threatening to flood him. He finally noticed he was still squeezing her arm in an ungentlemanly grip and released her, stumbling back a couple of steps. Aya looked concerned.
“Have I upset you somehow?”
“No!” he said a little too quickly. “No, I’m fine. This has been… enlightening.”
“Oh.” She didn’t look as though she knew what that meant, and he redirected all his attention to wiping down one of the statuettes she’d displaced. It helped, and by the time he’d finished he felt in control of his breathing again. Aya still looked a trifle worried, but he waved off her doubts and the two of them spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning the corridor’s rooms. Once her shyness wore off, it seemed she was eager for companionship and happily prattled on about life at the castle, and the various servants and slaves who had come and gone and what they were doing now. Ordinarily Touya loathed such noise but today he welcomed the distraction; anything to keep his mind off her disturbing revelations.
But that night there were no more distractions. Yue’s bedroom felt twice as empty as it had the night before it, large and full of flickering shadows from the fire. Touya could hardly stand to look at it, and tried to go to sleep as quickly as possible. But instead he tossed and turned on the rug for most of the night.
The third day dragged like no day had dragged since Touya came to this accursed castle. Restless and unable to stop dwelling on what he’d learned from Aya the day before, he spent hours pacing the long and empty corridors of the upper castle.
“It means nothing,” he muttered fiercely to the walls. “Sakura was in that cage. Of course he had to put me somewhere else.”
In a castle with at least a hundred rooms…
“It means nothing,” he repeated.
It was a long day. After dinner he hunched on the balcony rail and watched the last of the sunset light fade from the sky, the third sunset since Yue left. He’d said no more than three but still there was no sign of him in the castle. Where was he? Touya was starting to hate that empty bedroom. He waited until the stars had moved well across the sky – no moon tonight – before finally giving in to the chill and going inside. He slept fitfully, disturbed by dreams, occasionally waking and then slipping back into slumber. He could not know how long this went on, it seemed hours, but at last he woke to the feel of a cool hand on his face. Long silver hair fell around him like a curtain, and when he breathed he recognized a familiar scent.
“You’re back…” he sighed, and the head in his blurred vision nodded.
“I’m back.” A tender kiss was dropped upon his brow, and Touya closed his eyes. After that, he slept soundly.
Morning sunshine teased him back out of sleep several hours later, and drowsily Touya blinked and stretched. Much, much too early to wake up after a night like that, but now that his eyes were open he didn’t feel like rolling over and going to sleep again. He felt awake.
A vague memory, as if something from a dream, drifted through his mind and he looked to the bed. He did not know why, seeing as how Yue was never there in the morning whether in the castle or not, but sure enough there he was. Snow-colored hair spread across the sheets like a tangled veil, his head against a pillow and fast asleep, the lord of the castle really had returned. Touya had never seen Yue sleeping before, indeed, he had never even seen him with his eyes closed. Intrigued, he rolled to his feet and crossed the room as quietly as he could, leaning against one of the corner posts to watch. Asleep, Yue didn’t seem nearly so dangerous.
“Good morning, my slave.”
Touya jumped and almost fell over backward, caught off-guard. Those cat-like eyes had opened in the split-second Touya wasn’t paying attention, and now studied Touya interestedly. Horrified he’d been caught in the act of staring, Touya flushed and looked away.
“I’m not your slave. What are you doing in bed?”
“Is it not mine?”
“You’re never here when I wake up.”
“My journey was a tiresome one.” Touya managed to look Yue in the eye again, his curiosity piqued.
“Where did you go?”
“I’ve told you before, it is not your place to ask questions of your master. Did you miss me?”
Touya raised a sardonic eyebrow. “What do you think?” Yue eyed him speculatively, which unnerved Touya just a little. “What?”
“Come here.”
Touya exhaled in a resigned sort of way and shuffled around the corner, while Yue arranged himself in a more upright position. “Sit,” Yue elaborated, patting the edge of the bed when Touya did not come any closer. Touya sat, gingerly, and flinched just slightly when Yue raised a hand to his face.
For one long and slow moment, he did nothing but stroke his cheek. “I… thought of your face,” he murmured softly, “while I was gone.”
Touya’s heart thudded uncomfortably in his chest and he found he couldn’t look him in the eye again. They were not exactly kind, his words, but they did make him feel strange. Enough so that he found himself answering Yue’s earlier question, again.
“It was quiet. While you were gone.”
“Oh?”
“Yes. But don’t think that means I missed you or -” He broke off when Yue leaned forward and inhaled, one hand cupping his head to make sure he remained still. Lips closed over Touya’s earlobe and gently sucked. Neither spoke for several long moments, Touya sitting rigidly still while Yue tasted him, but after some while Touya wrinkled his nose.
“You smell different.”
It was nothing he would have consciously put thought into, but Touya was born and bred in the country and accustomed to paying attention to his sense of smell. He’d registered Yue’s scent too often to not notice this new odor. Yue drew back, an odd look in his eyes.
“Do I?”
“Yes. It’s not very strong, but,” Touya paused to sniff again, “it’s not very nice. What have you been doing?”
“Ask me again and I will be cross, slave. If my scent bothers you so very much then I suppose you will have to bathe me.”
“What?”
Touya sat up straight and back out of Yue’s grasp, aghast. Yue’s expression was placid.
“Get up. Undress.”
“I’m not bathing you.”
Too late he tried to slide off the bed but Yue was too quick for him. He snatched Touya’s wrist and dragged him right back onto it, twisting his arm behind him so painfully that Touya almost yelped. The other hand caressed his chest, holding him flush against Yue’s body.
“Three days away and I must begin training you all over again,” Yue sighed, the words tickling Touya’s ear. “It’s tiresome, slave. Are you going to make me fetch the lash?”
His wrist bent so painfully that tears had sprung to Touya’s eyes. Gritting his teeth, he swallowed a whimper and his pride.
“No.”
“Good. Now undress, and fetch my brush.”
Quiet, hah. Glaring spitefully, Touya wriggled out of Yue’s grip and clinked his way over to the wardrobe, to collect the hated brush. What could he have been thinking, complaining about this empty room?
Yue made him strip completely before returning to his side, first brushing the hair that had knotted itself overnight and then plaiting it into a solid thick rope. When Touya protested he didn’t know how, Yue showed him, then relaxed against the headboard while Touya completed the task.
“You learn fast.”
To which Touya only muttered under his breath. After he’d finished Yue alighted from bed and led him into the pristine bathing room, a room Touya was fairly certain he’d never seen Yue enter before. Water gushed from spouts and swirled around the interior of the never-used bath, then disappeared through a drain while fresh water poured to take its place. All of it at the response of a lazy wave on Yue’s part, while Touya watched.
“If you control water then why don’t you bathe in here more often?”
“I need only bathe when I wish it. Or, when you wish it.” Yue almost smiled and stepped down into the filling pool, relaxing comfortably against the edge. “Open that small cupboard, there in the wall.”
Touya did as told and found a number of crystal bottles, some curiously shaped sponges, and bristles on implements he was certain he’d never know how to use. “The white,” instructed Yue, “and pour it onto the sponge. Now rub it. Really, even the lowest class slave would know how to do this without instruction.”
“But,” Touya reminded him testily, “I’m not a slave. Now what?”
“Now, come here.”
Under Yue’s not-so-patient guidance Touya knelt by the side of the bath and dipped the sponge in the water, then began stroking it gently across Yue’s skin.
“This is stupid.”
“Circular motions, gently.”
“Why can’t you bathe yourself?”
“I am the master.” Yue braced a finger underneath Touya’s chin and forced eye contact. “It’s time to go lower. Get in.”
Touya scowled and clambered into the pool, which immediately surprised him with its warmth. The heat tickled and soothed his skin, embracing him, and he was too surprised to even think of hiding it. The boy from the mountains had never known such a hot bath.
“Wow. This feels… nice.”
Though the bath water downstairs was never cold, it certainly wasn’t close to this cozy heat. Touya could actually feel his muscles relaxing. Yue looked slightly amused.
“You like it?”
“Yes. If you don’t control fire, how is it so warm?”
“Magical heating stones, beneath the basin. You are really so clever, slave, but know so little of the world. It’s intriguing.”
Touya hmphed and returned to the task at hand, which was indeed going lower. The sponge moved in circles across Yue’s chest and torso, and then down to his waist. He had to get very close to reach Yue’s thighs without going under the surface, and fiercely avoided eye contact with Yue when their faces drew close. The warmth of the water was suddenly proving to be a problem, stimulating the blood in his groin, and Yue’s closeness wasn’t helping. At this distance, he could feel Yue’s breath against his steamed skin. And he could sense he was moving closer.
The bedroom door opened, startling Touya and interrupting the moment. His head turned sharply back to the doorway, beyond which he could hear Ralen.
“Hey, country boy. Time to get going, time for your -” He strode up to the bathroom and stopped short, astonishment frozen onto his face. Had it been any other situation, Touya would have laughed. As it was, he had to fight not to grin at the way Ralen’s mouth flopped open uselessly.
“M-my lord! Forgive me, I did not know you had returned.”
“Now you do,” Yue pointed out, coolly. “And you are forgiven.”
“I came to collect the slave -”
“Ralen,” Touya interrupted, seizing on a most unexpected idea. Very casually he returned the sponge to Yue’s chest and rubbed it in slow, sensuous circles. “Can’t you see we’re busy here?”
The supervisor stared at him in disbelief, which grew ever more pronounced when Touya sidled up to Yue and draped an arm across his chest. Priceless. Ralen looked like he was ready to drop.
“You’re dismissed, Ralen,” Yue prompted, when the blonde still hadn’t moved.
“O-of course, my lord. Excuse me.” He bowed his head and disappeared, from the sound of things almost running for the bedroom door. Touya couldn’t help it; he snorted.
“This amuses you, slave?”
“I hate that guy.”
“Mm, I should have asked him about your behavior while I was gone.”
Touya made a quick face. “My ‘behavior’ was just fine, and so was my sister’s. We didn’t do anything.”
“I shall confirm that,” Yue assured him, but he did not seem very concerned. Their bodies were still close enough to touch, a pleasant feeling in this warm water, and Touya allowed Yue to guide the sponge to his own collarbone without demur. One hand on top of the other, they stroked the abrasive cloth around the curve of Touya’s neck and down the chest.
“You know,” Touya tried tentatively, “you should let me bathe here every morning. It’d be one less thing for Ralen to do.”
“And who would take you to breakfast?”
“I can take myself to breakfast, and you know it.”
“It is not the duty of a proper pleasure slave to clean himself, that is a task for servants.”
You mean ex-slaves, Touya thought, but kept that grain of knowledge to himself. Instead he snorted again. “Please. You know I never let them touch me anyway.”
“Is that so?”
“I was raised to clean myself.” The sponge was moving downward, in demonstration, Touya holding Yue’s gaze for once even as hands caressed his genitals. Those eyes were inscrutable.
“Hmm. Since my slave was such a good boy this morning, if he wants to bathe in private I shall not deny him.”
“Really?” Touya was so surprised that his hands stopped moving, and he stared wide-eyed at Yue. “I can?”
“Yes. You can.”
“Oh.” With some difficulty Touya managed to tear his eyes away, discomfitted. “Um, thank you.”
Yue drew him so close, so close that he could feel his breath again.
“Show me your gratitude.”
