( With Matt )

As Matt lit his cigarette, He heard Gevanni tap on the window.
He rolled his window down as Gevanni walked to the drivers side getting into the car. He continued smoking blowing the smoke out of the window as Gevanni drove him to where Mello was he supposed.
When the car finally stopped he looked around and noticed a small apartment. Looking through the other car windows he decided in the middle of no-where.
Getting out of the car Matt stretched and walked to the door after Gevanni who had unloaded some bags from the boot of the car.
Gevanni placed the bags down in the hallway and walked further into the house.”Halle... “ He said looking in a few of the rooms.
“Through here” Halle called from the end of the hallway.
They walked down the hallway to a large open-planned living area / kitchen, Separated by a breakfast bar.
Matt moved straight to the kitchen and placed a lap top case down onto the table “Where is Mello?” He asked looking to Halle who was preparing some tea.
“He’s in a back room the doctor and a nurse are in there.” Halle replied as she finished preparing the tea and placing it in front of Matt and a coffee in front of Gevanni who had taken a seat at the breakfast bar. “You will see him soon enough.”
Matt nodded and sipped at his cup of tea. “How is he?”
“Near didn’t tell you? “ Halle asked a little surprised and glanced to Gevanni who shook his head.
Sighing Matt mumbled quietly “He said i’m coming here and not allowed to leave. Anything i need will be brought by you.”
Halle gave a slight nod “Mello is stable but still in critical condition. He is unconscious from the pain. If he makes it through the night he should be ok.”
Matt finished his drink as Rod Ross walked in and poured himself a drink. “Whose the red-head?”
Matt turned and faced Rod, Halle looked at them both. “This is Matt, He is a good friend of Mello’s,Matt this is Rod Ross he saved Mello and has been working with Mello as his boss.” She said filling them both in. “Get used to each other, as you’re both living here.” She added.
Rod nodded and walked out of the kitchen area slowly “As long as he doesn’t annoy me i don’t care.” He said before disappearing in a room down the hall.
Matt stood up. “I want to see Mello now.”
Halle nodded and walked to the doorway “This way... You can’t smoke in Mello’s room, It’s a risk of infection. And you have to do as doctor says, he knows what he is doing Matt.” She warned as she came to a door with a paper sign taped to it ‘Controlled Area. Infection Risk To The Patient.’ Matt read and looked to the floor as Halle knocked on the door.
After a few minutes a youngish lady in a blue uniform with a white apron came to the door. “Yes Halle” The nurse replied while eyeing Matt.
“This is Matt, The one who will be staying here with Mello.” She said and she pushed Matt slightly forward when he tried to hide behind her.
The nurse went back inside the room and came out holding something wrapped in plastic. “Go shower, Wash yourself with this soap.” Pointing to it on the top of the clothes, “Then changes into the clothes in the package.”
Matt took the offered clothes and gave them a puzzled look. “Why.”
“There is a high risk of infection even though Mello is bandaged , No-one can come in without showering and changing first. “ The nurse said
“Where’s the bathroom then please.” Matt asked quietly still not looking up for the clothes in his hand.
The Nurse pointed to the next door “Just through there... there is another door just inside that leads straight into this room.. so once you’re washed and changed enter through there.” The nurse added as Matt walked to the bathroom door. He only nodded as he entered and walked into the bathroom shutting the door behind him.
Halle gave her thanks to the nurse and walked back to Gevanni who was still sitting at the breakfast bar. “Does Near really think this will help.” She asked him.
“I don’t think he thought about it, As soon as he heard that Mello had called Matts name, He decided without telling Matt. In fact Matt didn’t want to come Near practically had to order him to do it.” Gevanni said before glancing to his watch. “I better head off and get back.” He said standing from the breakfast bar.
“Sure, so am i staying here till further notice.”
“As far as i know. I’ll ask when i get back and contact via phone.” Gevanni said as he walked down the hallway to the front door.

Matt finished showering, He dried off and changed into the clothes provided.
‘Green does not suit me.’ Matt thought to himself looking in the mirror. He brushed his hair back from his face and washed his hands one last time before going through the second door.

The room was Large. The first thing Matt spotted was a desk with a lamp on in the corner of the room. The nurse from earlier and a slightly older male doctor in a white lab coat were both looking at him.
The room was quite dark which surprised Matt. He glanced round and his eye spotted a second lamp by the bed.
Mello was laying on the bed . A sheet around his bottom half, Bandages covering his whole left arm, Half of his chest and Neck and shoulder, there were some over his face covering his nose and left eye. An oxygen mask over his mouth and a I.V tube coming from his right arm.
Matt approached the bed slowly and whispered “Gods Mello, What did you do to yourself.”

The doctor spoke up as Matt reached to stroke Mello’s right cheek. “You can’t touch his face... Only his right hand.”
Matt turned at the voice and nodded “Ok i won’t “ He sat down by the bed and took Mello’s hand instead. “Where is his Rosary and Bracelet.” Matt stroked Mello’s wrist where his bracelet should be. “He never takes them off.”
“We had to remove them for his treatment there in the drawer.” the nurse said coming to the bedside and checking Mello’s obs and stats.
Matt retrieved them from the drawer and placed them in his hand before holding Mello’s again so the Rosary was in between there hands.
“You can talk to him he can hear you even though he isn’t awake.” The nurse said kindly.
Matt shook his head, Not taking his eyes off Mello. “Wouldn’t know what to say. And he hates me talking randomly.” Matt said smiling slightly and leaning down to kiss Mello’s hand gently.
The Nurse smiled and walked back to desk... writing in a file there.

Over the next few weeks a routine was put in place. Matt would leave the room during bandage changing, He ate and slept next to Mello waiting for him to wake up.
Mello was now stable he was no longer in critical condition,There was still the large risks of infection but things were a lot calmer around here.
Each day Matt held Mello’s hand so Mello was touching his rosary each time whispering “Keep strong Mello, Come back to me.”
“You should sleep more Matt. There are spare beds in the other room.” The nurse said quietly.
Matt shook his head “I need to be here when he wakes up, Or he’ll think i don’t care.”
The nurse smiled sadly and nodded before going back to the desk.
Matt laid his head down and didn’t let go of Mello’s hand as he closed his eyes. ‘I’m here Mello, So please wake up, You’re strong.’ Matt thought over and over as he drifted into sleep.

‘Everything hurts. Where am i ....’ Mello thought to himself opening his right eye before closing it again. ‘What happened’ as Mello thought to himself he remembered what happened. Opening his eye again he groaned as he tried to move.
Matt stirred at the sound. “Mello.” Sitting up he saw Mello’s open eye, He was panicking slightly.
“Shh Mello you’re ok, You’re going to be ok..” Matt said removing the oxygen mask from Mello’s mouth and saw Mello relax slightly.
“hurts to move.” Mello croaked out before coughing slightly.
“I’ll get the nurse.” Matt ran to the door and shouted. “He’s awake, Mello’s awake he says it hurts.” He closed the door and went back to Mello’s side.
“I thought you’d never wake up.” Matt said.
Mello smiled slightly and reached up to touch his own neck. “Either hurts to talk or you’re wondering about this.” Matt opened his palm showing Mello’s rosary. Mello reached for it, “You can’t wear it... Not yet at least.”
Mello frowned ..”How bad is it.”
“I haven’t seen it. They kick me out when they changed your bandages.” Matt said glancing to the door as it opened, Both the nurse and doctor came in.
“How is he.” the doctor asked walking to the bedside.
“Fucking sore... Everywhere hurts.” Mello growled before coughing.
Matt tilted his head up and allowed Mello to sip at water through a straw.
“It will hurt even with the pain killers” The doctor said and he check the charts “We can give you some more to top you up.” He added and nodded to the nurse who went to prepare the pain killer. “It will take a while for you to heal yet.” He continued.
Mello nodded slowly to all of it not wanting to talk right now, He squeezed Matt’s hand tightly.
Matt stroked Mello’s hand. “Mello’s strong he’ll get through this just you wait.”
Mello smiled at Matts words and watched as the Nurse injected something into the Cannula in his right arm.
She smiled and said quietly “Just a pain killer and anti-sickness medicine.”
Mello nodded again briefly. “We’ll leave you in peace need anything we’ll be close by” She said collecting his file walking away.
“Matt how long?, and how bad?” Mello asked again laying back feeling tired already.
Matt sighed waiting for the door to shut “I’ve been here 2 and a half weeks, and like i said i don’t know how bad it is. You’re whole left arm and your upper chest, Neck shoulder and half your face is bandaged though. They said you’re not critical any more, There need to keep you hydrated via I.V drip. They change you’re bandages daily at minute, and give you pain medicine and anti-biotics.” Matt said stroking Mello’s hand which was grasping the rosary.
“You’re lucky to be alive, We saw the blast Mello, Halle brought you here with Rods help.”
“Rods here?... Where is here? and where is cue-tip?” Mello asked.
“Rod is probably in his room we barely see him. We are at a safe house, i don’t know where and Near...Near is at his H.Q..” Matt frowned and looked away remembering Near ‘I haven’t thought about him cause i was worried bout Mello.’ Matt thought.
“I thought he’d come with you.” Mello asked slightly surprised given their last meeting together.
“Near told me to come here and look after you, Said i should stay with you as i love you and that’s only reason i was here was to find you.” Matt said “You should drink some more it will help your recovery.”
“Can i have some chocolate, I hate water.” Mello said.
“I’ll have to ask the doctor or nurse.” Matt said pausing at the knock at the
door, Rod popped his head round the door. “I heard the princess was awake.”
Matt nodded “Yep, he’s finally awake. Rod stay with him as i need to ask the nurse something.” Matt asked while standing and walking to the door. Rod walked further into the room. “Sure thing Red.” Mello just glared the best he could at the nickname Rod gave him.
Matt left the room, closing the door behind himself.
“So how are you princess?...You had us all worried for a while there.” Rod said as he sat by the bed.
“Stop calling me princess and you worried... never” Mello growled out.
“Yes worried, It’s not often i have to carry someone’s body with blood every where.”
Mello gulped...”So it’s that bad.”
Rod nodded before replying quietly, “Scarring will be there but not that bad if you give yourself a chance to heal” Mello nodded staring at the ceiling. “Matt’s barely left the room, Only when they’ve dragged him out to change your bandages.”
Mello gave a short laugh “They actually let him some and play games in here.”
Rod shook his head “No they wouldn’t they’ve been on the kitchen table since he arrived. He barely eats or sleeps.”
‘Matt didn’t smoke or play games.’ Mello thought to himself. He was grateful when Rod helped him sit up propping him up with some pillows. They both turned as the door opened.
“They won’t allow you to eat chocolate yet, But the will allow you to drink hot chocolate.” He placed the mug down on the bedside table. “I even made it with your chocolate.”
Mello smiled “Thank you Matt” He reached out slowly to take Matt’s hand, Matt took it squeezing.
Rod stood “Well i’ll see you later, glad your awake finally Mello”
Mello smiled his thanks as Rod left the room closing the door.
Matt checked how warm Mello’s hot chocolate was before giving it to him. Mello sighed as he drank it.....

The doctor and nurse entered the room. “We need to check Mello over.”
Matt stood nodded his head “I’ll go check the computers quickly then” Matt said giving Mello’s hand a squeeze and a smile before letting it go waling out into the main room where the computers had been set up.

Matt walked over to the computers and started typing away. ‘I need to check on Near’Matt thought... After a short few minutes Matt growled ‘He’s changed the security on computers’ Matt went through numerous backdoors and finally hacked into Nears system.
He brought up the security cameras and started to search for Near. ‘He is still working hard.’ Matt thought watching images closely he jumped when a Instant Message came through.
‘Matt please concentrate on Mello’s recovery, Not hacking my new system’ Matt read to himself before typing his reply. ‘Near i was checking on you, Halle wouldn’t tell me anything.’ After he sent the message he watched Near on the monitors as he began typing.
‘I am fine, I am busy with the Kira case, I am closer to proving that Light Yagami is Kira.’ Was his reply.
Matt sighed to himself ‘Near... I miss you.’ He pressed send.
He saw Near sag slightly in his seat. ‘How is Mello? Is he recovering?’
‘Yes he is now awake, The doctor says it’ll be a few more weeks before he can leave the bedroom.’ Matt replied. Watching Near nod his head slightly before starting to type. ‘Ok... was there anything else you need i am very busy at the moment.’
Matt thought for a few moments before typing ‘No... Please take care, and eat something... get some sleep ok.’ Matt sent as a reply trying hard not to cry.
‘I will, Take care and look after yourself and Mello’ Near typed before hitting a button causing the Instant Messages and security cameras to shut down. ‘He booted me’ Matt thought as he wiped his eyes as he heard a door open behind him.
Rod walked in studying Matt silently. “What !!!” Matt snapped.
“Didn’t say a word Red... Not a word” Rod said waling to the sofa’s sitting down.
Matt wiped his eyes one last time before going to the bathroom washing up and going bac into Mello’s room.
Mello lay sleeping on the bed the doctor and nurse were checking through there supplies, making list of what they need.
Matt moved silently to Mello’s side and took his hand squeezing it.

The next week was hard on Matt as now every time it came to change Mello’s bandages Rod came into hold Mello down as he stood outside listening to Mello scream in pain.
When it was finished Rod walked out allowing Matt to go back in, Mello was normally tired or passed from the pain. On top of all of this Near was ignoring any contact he tried to make and any time Halle came with food she gave a sad smile and asked how Mello was, she ignored any questions about Near.
The end result was Matt not sleeping much, He only ate small amounts, It was taking it’s toll on Matts fatigue and body.
The nurse came over to the bed with a trolley on it carrying pain medicines and a large bowl of water, sterile towels, gauzes and bandages.
Mello sighed “Do we have to.”
“We need to check it’s healing and keep it clean.” The nurse said before adding “We’re going to try upping the amount of pain medicine though”
Mello nodded and squeezed Matt’s hand who was asleep beside him.
Matt stirred and sat up “ ‘s up “
“bandage change time.” Mello said with a frown covering his face.
Matt sighed and stood up giving a light kiss to Mello’s right cheek. “I’ll make you a hot chocolate for you.” Matt said glancing over his shoulder as Rod and the doctor waled in. Matt frowned as he let go of Mello’s hand waling out the room, He listened at the door as Rod or the doctor locked it behind him stopping him from coming in.
Matt walked into the kitchen starting the kettle before going to the computer logging into his server.... He went to the kitchen making his tea he heard the computer connect ‘You have mail’ Matt sighed and walked back to the computer taking a sip of his tea.
