CHAPTER 18
Keisuke walked through his front door, and kicked off his shoes. He stepped into the main house to see his mother, Yukiko Takahashi sitting in the living room with a haggard expression on her face.
"Okāsan, are you all right?"
"More importantly, is your teammate any better? Ryosuke explained to us how you're helping him through such a terrible ordeal, musuko."
Keisuke had no idea what cunning tale Aniki had told their mother, so hedged. "Everything's under control again. You should get some rest. Gomen nasai for all the worry I caused you."
"I'm fine, Keisuke. It seems you've truly become an adult on me this past year."
"Okāsan, I'm twenty-two. I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to be this way."
"To me it feels like it was a short time ago when you hid behind my skirt at stores. Just promise me that you'll be careful, Keisuke?"
"I'm being careful, Okāsan. I'm not a toddler anymore. Lately I only take on things I'm certain I can handle. You don't need to worry about me. I'm not getting involved with gangs, or things like that. If I don't come home by dawn, I'm not getting into fights. I'm probably training hard to become a professional circuit racer like I said I would."
She smiled at him, and nodded. I know, musuko. Ryosuke told us a little bit about your new training schedule with Fujiwara kun. I'm relieved that you have a friend who can help you realize your dreams" Okāsan turned and headed down the hallway to her bedroom.
Keisuke had the strangest suspicion that his relationship with his parents was shifting beyond recognition. He glanced at the main clock as he stalked to the staircase. It was ten-fifteen. His brother would still be awake. The blond climbed the stairs to his and Ryosuke's quarters to find out what his brother had told their parents. He rapped on the door and entered Ryosuke's room, shutting the door behind him.
"I know you're pissed because of the melt down today, Aniki. However, I wanted to say domo arigato for your help." The blond stepped over to the bed and sat with his elbows supported on his knees.
"Try to keep this kind of thing from becoming a habit, Otouto."
"We won't make that mistake twice. So nani did you say to Okāsan? She said some strange things when I got home."
"I told our ryōshin that Fujiwara has trouble with his ex-girlfriend, and you are keeping our downhill specialist from getting into a second car wreck. His stress levels are making him ill so you've intervened to keep Project D on track."
Ryosuke gave him a sardonic glance, and returned to reading his computer screen. Keisuke flopped onto his back on Ryosuke's bed. He thought about his brother's response as the older man continued to look over the work he had done.
"Did you have to use that bitch as an excuse for my being out so long?"
"I noticed your reaction to hearing her mentioned, and I prefer to use truth whenever possible. With the things said this evening, I'm certain that Fujiwara's ex girlfriend is a source of contention between you."
"We aren't fighting about anything. Mogi's whining so often that she's really antagonizing Takumi. How did you describe things to our ryōshin, Aniki?"
"I told them that Fujiwara's ex-girlfriend causes him enough stress that he forgets to eat, or sleep. I showed Otosān his medical results from his previous hospital stay so he knows Fujiwara has ulcers. I explained that everything combined to cause his last accident."
"Did you have to remind our parents of Akiho?"
"Would you rather I tell them you're head over heels in love with Fujiwara, and couldn't tear yourself away from him?"
"Aniki! That's not my point." Keisuke felt his annoyance stirring as he stared at his brother's back. He squashed it with difficulty.
"It's a good parallel. Akiho's abuse almost drove you off the deep end. Based upon your reaction tonight, it seems Mogi is driving Fujiwara off the deep end."
"Che! Well now I understand Okāsan demanding a promise to be careful from me!"
Ryosuke asked. "So, tell me. Exactly how much trouble has this Mogi caused for Fujiwara? She said something to upset Fujiwara if she's a forbidden subject."
Keisuke ran a hand through his hair and huffed as he glared at his older brother. "True. Mogi told Takumi that he can't possibly love anyone but her yesterday afternoon. He was mad as hell when I got to the look out. Everything's been a bit crazy ever since."
"Naze would she claim he's in love with her? Isn't she aware that Fujiwara has been seeing you?"
"Mogi knows that Takumi's dating someone else. His otosān doesn't need to know it's me, Aniki. Anyway, Mogi accused Takumi of dating me to get revenge for her Benz daddy. I got into a fight with her on the phone while Takumi was at work today. That onna refuses to listen to anyone. She says she has to make things right with Takumi, and she's changing for him. He's not buying it any more than I am. The whiny little bitch really pisses us both off!"
"Ouch. It sounds like she's stalker material." Ryosuke looked concerned as he turned his chair to look at him.
Keisuke snorted. "Mogi's a pain in Takumi's ass several times a week by telephone, but I doubt she's like Akiho, Aniki."
Ryosuke looked even more worried. "Let's hope she doesn't have a gun in hand when she shows up on Fujiwara's doorstep."
"Aniki, don't go there. I've got enough to cope with already. Getting Takumi used to being the love of my life is all I can handle right now. I don't need you resurrecting nightmares!"
"Keisuke, does Fujiwara know anything about Akiho?"
"Takumi knows she played a lot of head games so I dumped her. I told him Mogi pisses me off because she twists things to fit her games too."
"You should tell him the whole truth about your ex, Keisuke. Mogi may have similar personality flaws."
"Mogi's a crybaby that promises she's changing so Takumi will take her back. When he refuses, she starts screeching at the top of her lungs. Akiho was a violent, angry, hardcore Yankee, Aniki. Comparing the two onnas beyond the guilt trips is impossible."
Ryosuke's voice turned cold. "I know you want to believe this is different. After all, Akiho fell so low she prostituted herself before you took her under your wing. You got her off the streets, and tried to teach her to have self respect, Keisuke. She never had any chances to get ahead before you tried to help her. I also recall you made concessions for Akiho until she tried to put a bullet in your head three years ago! You're lucky she missed."
"Akiho was a street kid with nothing to lose. Mogi didn't grow up sleeping in alleyways. She has a home with a family. Mogi just wants an easy life and thinks Takumi's dumb enough to give it to her if she whines long enough."
"Keisuke, there are many unstable people in this world. Severe abuse, or neglect could have turned Mogi into a mental case capable of anything. It's the pieces of the puzzle we don't have that we should worry about most."
"Mogi's convinced that if she keeps a job, and gets through college, she can change for the better. Who knows, Aniki? Maybe she can. I know Takumi's behind her attempt because he honestly wants to see her succeed. He's worried that she'll lose her direction if he gets too harsh with her about leaving him alone."
"You'd better warn Fujiwara to be on his guard with his ex-girlfriend, if only for his safety, Otouto." Ryosuke gave him a rare glare.
"I'm not going to tell Takumi that Mogi's a dangerous stalker without evidence, Aniki. I know how possessive and jealous I get over him." Keisuke glared right back.
Ryosuke raised his voice as he barked at him. "I remember how you said Akiho wasn't insane, just misunderstood! Jealous feelings aside, if this Mogi exhibits any additional unstable behaviors, tell Fujiwara about Akiho, and let him decide for himself."
"Fine, Aniki. I'll look for proof that Mogi's dangerous. Unless I have real proof, Takumi doesn't need the extra stress that warning him will cause."
Ryosuke was one of three people against whom Keisuke could not win an argument. He raised his hands to placate his angry older brother. It was rare when Aniki raised his voice, and Keisuke knew better than anyone else how dangerous his brother's temper was on the rare occasions he roused it. He had snapped at his brother nonstop since dawn. It was a miracle that Ryosuke had chosen to overlook his flaring temper all day. Ryosuke turned back to his laptop, satisfied with his compromise.
"Did Fujiwara senior find out that you're with his musuko because you fought with Mogi today?"
"iie. Oyaji san only knows about Takumi being so mad with Mogi that he went on a hike to calm down yesterday. We discussed how much stress Takumi's under because Mogi's become an obnoxious pest. I told Oyaji san I'd tell the bitch to get lost if I ever saw her. He handed me the phone when she called."
"Takeuchi's reaction over how Fujiwara senior might react if he finds out about you two concerns me. I'm of the opinion we should attempt to get Fujiwara out of that household."
Keisuke blew out a hard breath. "I'm already working on that plan. Takumi said he's not ready to consider living with me. Oyaji san gets pretty vicious whenever he drinks too much. Takumi didn't deny it when I confronted him about a couple scars I saw recently."
Ryosuke typed as he spoke. "I see. I may have to step in to help you convince Fujiwara to agree to moving away from that environment. How's Fujiwara handling your announcement that you plan on making him your unofficial spouse?"
"Takumi said he's not ready to think that far ahead yet when we talked about it. Tonight he was too busy complaining that he let me down by not saying things the way he thinks he should have."
"So, Fujiwara's afraid he failed you, and is angry with himself over it?"
"Hai. It's annoying, Aniki. He showed serious chops this evening, so I told him to give himself a break."
"Sounds like another ongoing fear of his."
"Hai. Takumi said he hasn't been a good enough boyfriend yesterday afternoon. Naze can't he accept that he's fine the way he is?"
The clack a clack of the keyboard and occasional beeps counterpointed their conversation. "It isn't surprising that Fujiwara has doubts. He feels he must please people whom he respects. The fact he places so much pressure on himself to be a perfect partner point to you being very important to him, Keisuke. I think he may genuinely love you, whether or not he has said as much."
"I've already figured that out, Aniki. Takumi's fighting with himself over several things that he finally told me about last night. The more I find out about Takumi's past, the more amazing he gets. He never backs down, even when he ends up freaking himself out since he agreed to see me."
"His bisexual rating, if one judges his demeanor, seems low. Fujiwara's drawn to you specifically, Keisuke. If your personality did not influence him, he wouldn't attempt a same sex relationship. You're the only person who can draw Fujiwara into a romantic relationship of this nature."
"How did you know Takumi feels that I'm the only man he can get romantically involved with, Aniki?"
"It's easy to figure out Fujiwara, Keisuke. He feels a strong connection to, and respect for, you. He relies on your judgements and guidance, Otouto. Without those qualities, nobody could gain his cooperation."
"Maybe, but Takumi acts like he should shift gears overnight. Tohji couldn't do that either. When he discovered that he couldn't stay away from Akimoto, he fought with himself as much as Takumi does."
"Fujiwara seems to live with expectations that are very black and white, Otouto. If he says he's going to do something, he expects perfection from himself. I suspect that's part of how he keeps others from rejecting him."
"Takumi still needs to give himself a break. He blows my mind one minute, and then scares the shit out of me the next." Keisuke grumbled looking at the ceiling.
Ryosuke turned his chair to face the bed again, the comfortable clacking falling silent. "How exactly does Fujiwara scare you, Keisuke?"
"Takumi's pushing himself way too hard, Aniki. He bottles everything inside until he has damned panic attacks. Sometimes I feel like beating his ass to get Takumi to tell me his problems before he wigs himself out."
Ryosuke tilted his head and steepled his fingers as he focused on Keisuke's face. "Frustration won't help Fujiwara open up to you, Keisuke. Neglect makes people wary of trusting others. I doubt Fujiwara even knows how to open up."
"I realize that, Aniki! Doesn't make it any less annoying. I tell Takumi he's my equal, and he's doing everything right. He won't accept my opinion."
Ryosuke sounded thoughtful. "Fujiwara has a hard time expressing things verbally. Many shy people have that particular handicap, Keisuke. However, I think there's more to Fujiwara's silence. Fujiwara Senior is an emotional cripple. When I spoke to him during Fujiwara's hospital stay, he never suggested real concern."
"Matte, Aniki. You're saying Oyaji san didn't care when Takumi was in that wreck?"
"Not that I could detect on the phone. The implied lack of emotional support may have taught Fujiwara at a very young age to refrain from asking for any affection. Takeuchi confirmed that Fujiwara's father is abusive tonight. That strengthens the probability that your boyfriend learned to expect rejection long ago."
"Takumi has said he expects people to leave him. We talked about that problem at length last night. That's part of the reason he finds it hard to believe me when I say he's the right person for me. Is there anything I can do to help him get over that, Aniki?"
"I'm surprised Fujiwara discussed the issue. He strikes me as believing that if he doesn't cause any problems, you won't feel any need to discard him. My theory is that Fujiwara has spent much of his life feeling like a burden, Keisuke. Your boyfriend may crave intimacy, but doesn't understand himself. If he does understand he wants to be close to you, he may not know how to express that desire, Otouto."
Keisuke winced as he sat up again. "So, you're saying that Takumi will continue to believe that I'll leave if I know he's worried, or wants to be close to me. Nothing I say is going to get past his thick skull to make any difference."
"Observing Fujiwara has only led me to assume that he's going to have difficulty accepting genuine love at first, Otouto. I did warn you that you'd have difficulty getting under his defenses if he was open to suggestion."
Keisuke debated how much he should tell his brother about Takumi's revelations the previous night. After a quick reflection, Keisuke decided to refrain from giving any details since Takumi hated when others learned of his situation.
"Takumi's in a nonstop battle with himself. I'm finding out just how tough Takumi is from everything he's admitted about his past over the last couple months. I'm concerned that he's making himself miserable to make sure I'm happy."
Ryosuke's tone was dry, and loaded with nuances. "Congratulations on a very astute observation, Keisuke. Now, how do you propose to correct this dilemma?"
Keisuke blanched. He looked at the floor as he considered his brother's words. He did not want Takumi to be miserable, but Keisuke was unsure of what he could do to change things. Knowing that Takumi loved him, and how people had abandoned him whenever he gave his heart to them made Keisuke even more determined to stick with his boyfriend. The silence stretched as he considered his options.
"There's not a chance I'm leaving Takumi, Aniki. I'll make sure Takumi accepts that I'm not going anywhere. He'll get comfortable with telling me about his problems soon enough. I tell him to knock it off whenever he tears himself down and remind him that he's good enough at things he does. Oyaji san agreed to tell Mogi to stop calling now that he knows about her bull shit. So far, those are all the ideas I've gotten."
"You've outlined a very good plan, Keisuke. Time, and steady reinforcement that shows you're committed to his well-being, should resolve Fujiwara's anxiety. If you can maintain the patience required to teach him about healthier relationships, he'll get through the transition faster. Trust is difficult to learn when you've had little positive experience with trustworthy people, Keisuke."
"Very true. Sometimes Takumi's got less patience than I do." Keisuke clasped his hands in front of him with his elbows resting on his knees.
"Fujiwara simply needs steady doses of affection, and support to trust you. He'll open up as he learns to accept that you intend to stay with him. Perhaps Fujiwara feels that he's dreaming that you honestly care for him, Keisuke. Given time, that feeling will wear off and reality will settle Fujiwara's fears."
Keisuke's head jerked up at his brother's observation. "Hey, I often wonder if I'm dreaming that we're a couple. Do you really think Takumi feels the same way, Aniki?"
"Fujiwara's not used to being loved for himself. Your unwavering belief in him could cause that reaction. I've noticed Fujiwara's serious self esteem issues. Frustrating as it is for now, do not stop anything you're doing, Otouto. However, expect Fujiwara to remain mystified by you a little longer."
Keisuke felt jealousy surging over how well his brother read and understood Takumi. Sometimes he wondered if an analytical mind better suited Ryosuke to Takumi's shy and deeply wounded personality. When the thought formed, Keisuke crushed it. Takumi had accepted him, and even admitted to loving him for himself. His darling even said the idea of seducing Aniki repulsive.
"How can you understand my boyfriend better than I do, Aniki?"
"My ability to read Fujiwara is due to noticing subtle things you miss. Fitting the pieces together through consideration allows me to figure out Fujiwara's most likely reaction. Naze else would I constantly remind you to use your brains, Keisuke? If you devote time to gaining knowledge, you'll soon understand Fujiwara far better than I."
Ryosuke turned back to his desk and began to type. Keisuke got off the bed and stalked to the balcony, pulling a cigarette out of his pocket. He lit it as he leaned on the balcony railing. While smoking, Keisuke leaned his head back to stare at the stars overhead. He heard his brother's chair creak.
"Takumi may be driving me crazy, but I don't want to be with anyone else." The blond tossed the words into the night air. He did look to see if his brother followed him.
A hand dropped to his shoulder. "I've noticed. Although I doubt most of the things that he does qualify you for psychiatric help." Ryosuke's dry tone held many undercurrents, most of which Keisuke recognized as teasing. He smiled as he recalled saying something similar to his boyfriend the previous afternoon.
Keisuke gave his older brother a sassy grin, and returned his eyes to the heavens. "I do my fair share of making Takumi squirm too."
Keisuke had no doubt that his brother's black brows were cocked at an odd angle as he tried to come up with a witty retort. Ryosuke changed topics. "So, care to explain your reason for not returning home when Fujiwara went to work? You failed to explain that when you said Takeuchi discovered you."
"I was asleep when he left for work."
"You said you got into a fight with Fujiwara's ex, and had a talk with his otosān also. How did all of that transpire?"
"After I woke up, I talked to Oyaji san about how stressed out Takumi has been. Mogi called while we were talking, and I chewed her out."
"So, you were at Mount Akina all night training, and then you went to his place to crash. Couldn't you simply come home, and save me the trouble of calming Okāsan down repeatedly?"
"I told you Takumi was steamed about Mogi and took off on a hike. He knows about this really small canyon where he goes to when he's a basket case. It's a beautiful place with a small waterfall at one end. Anyway, we got stuck there overnight. The trail's dangerous and he didn't calm down until after it was too dark to get back out of the canyon."
"With a smile like that on your face, . . . You took advantage of the situation, Keisuke!" Ryosuke's voice held heavy censure.
Keisuke ignored his brother. "The sun dropped too low to get back out safely. The trail's filled with loose rubble and can be dangerous, Aniki. It took Takumi a couple of hours to calm down. I woke up with him next to me. I want to wake up next to him always. I really have to convince him to get a place of our own."
"Keisuke, if you fell asleep on the mountain, you should have come straight home once the sun was high enough to get out of the canyon."
"We went to Takumi's place because he wanted me to stick around. Oyaji san said we looked half dead, and told us to get upstairs and go back to sleep. I didn't wonder if I'd dreamed up the last two months today."
"I never thought I'd see the day you would turn into a sappy, lovesick, air-head, Keisuke."
The wheat hued blond frowned as he looked over at his brother. Ryosuke wore an expression that could only be described as baffled. "Nani do you mean by that?"
"You've never liked sleeping outdoors. The fact you slept on the mountain, and still needed to sleep at his place, combined with tonight's odd behaviors gives me too much information, Keisuke. Frankly I have to wonder if you didn't get caught by Takeuchi doing something more than making out. I hope you aren't backing Fujiwara into any dangerous corners that will eventually backfire on you."
"I did not push Takumi into anything. He wants us to stay together also, so butt out. Some parts of our relationship are none of your business, Aniki."
"I hope you didn't manipulate Fujiwara to get the decision you wanted fro him, Keisuke."
Keisuke glared at his brother as his scruples twinged. In some respects he had manipulated Takumi. Still, he had only pushed his boyfriend's competitive button enough to help Takumi overcome his fear of accepting what he also wanted to happen.
Aloud Keisuke snapped, "I have too much to lose by doing something like that, Aniki. Give me some credit, will you?! Takumi wasn't coerced into anything. We did a lot of talking last night. He finally explained things I've wondered about for several weeks. The rest of it isn't any of your business."
"Knowing you're impatient, spoiled, and have a forceful personality gives me cause for worry. Fujiwara's not going to be coerced for long, even in subtle ways. Push too hard, too fast and you could lose him, Keisuke. For all that Fujiwara's quiet, he's not half as submissive, or weak as he pretends. He probably cultivated his demeanor to prevent people from feeling threatened by him."
"Damn! Would you quit pissing me off, Aniki? I already know Takumi's got the hardest core stubborn streak and iron will of anyone I've ever met."
"Someone has to remind you to slow down. Fujiwara has to tear down social conditioning, plus heal from a lifetime of abuse. I don't want to see you two fall apart because you overwhelm your boyfriend by accident. You love him, and I don't want to see you get your heart broken because you were pushy at the wrong moment."
Keisuke set his jaw as he glared at the night sky. Rysouke was genuinely trying to be the voice of reason for his own welfare. He fought the urge to rip into his brother over the lecture he was getting.
After several tense moments, Ryosuke spoke again. "If I've read things wrong, then I apologize. I'm concerned for you, Keisuke. I think Mogi's interference has made you feel insecure. If you let your insecurity get out of control, you'll push Fujiwara beyond his ability to accept you in his life. You've got very long term goals for keeping Fujiwara beside you. However, if you back Fujiwara into corners he can't handle, you're going to lose him."
"Nothing will make me destroy the relationship I'm build with Takumi, Aniki. Even when I tease him so he can't deny he's attracted to me, I haven't gone overboard. You aren't there when I tell Takumi to stop pushing himself way too hard. I tell him to stop backing himself into corners almost every time I see him. Takumi's pushing himself so hard because I'm important to him. So, quit yelling at me over Takumi finally deciding that I'm serious about loving him enough to stay with him."
"If you haven't pushed Fujiwara out of fear that you'll lose him, then I have nothing to complain over."
"Then quit lecturing me, Aniki! Takumi told me that he loves me this morning. He barely finished saying it when my cell went off! Do you know how much I wanted to break the damned cell because you interrupted Takumi mid word? I've hoped and prayed Takumi would say he loves me. You called to whine that Okāsan's having a fit right when Takumi finally worked up the nerve to admit he loves me."
"That certainly explains your anger. Sumimasen for my bad timing, Keisuke." Aniki sounded sheepish. Keisuke glanced at his older brother, and saw that Ryosuke looked equally mortified.
"Well, it's not like you knew anything when you called."
"It doesn't excuse my snapping at you over getting awoken by Okāsan. You two are finally making real progress, and my call must have wrecked everything."
"We managed to salvage the situation."
"I guess that explains you two getting into trouble at the lookout."
Keisuke frowned at the moon overhead to keep from snapping at his brother's nosy remark. He lit another cigarette and changed the subject. "Aniki, I want to bring Takeuchi along for one of our battles."
"Naze would you want to bring that irritating fellow along?"
"Takeuchi's been with Takumi since they were very little. Takeuchi's the only person that hasn't vanished from Takumi's life. I've got a bad feeling about his opposition. If Takeuchi can't accept me being with Takumi, I've got a huge problem on my hands. Maybe, if Takeuchi sees us working together, and I toss Kenta at him, we can get that immature baka thinking before he rejects their friendship. Kenta can entertain Takeuchi since the guy wants acceptance so much he can't stand himself. Takeuchi needs to see that we're still the same people we've always been. We have to get it through his thick skull that we aren't going to try and convert him to being gay now that we're a couple."
"Hm, I don't suppose it hurts to give it a try. It might work since Kenta does has time to entertain Takeuchi."
"I'll talk to Kenta tonight, and see if he's willing to help, Aniki."
"You could invite Takeuchi to come to the next battle when you go to Akina tomorrow. I can make sure Takeuchi rides to the meet with Kenta if he agrees to your proposal. Speaking of battles, we have a battle opportunity coming up that sounds intriguing."
How so, Aniki?"
Keisuke watched as his brother disappeared inside for a few moments. The black-haired racer returned with a sheet of paper in hand. It was a printout of an email his brother had received. Keisuke took it and read;
'To Project D captain,
Which course are you interested in? The normal crowd uses the main pass. The Gaijin have a road that runs parallel. It's normally restricted to the resident Gaijin to insure peace between less tolerant natives, and foreigners. They extend invitations to elite drivers who are well disposed toward our resident Gaijin. They only run their course during daylight hours. This area has many top drivers from other parts of the world who only drive on the Gaijin's course. Please advise as to acceptable conditions for your team's visit.
Cordially,
Asada Kiyo, Captain of Roaring Falls team.'
"Is this a joke, Aniki? Two courses?"
"That's correct. I sent Asada a reply that we would like information about both courses so I can discuss specifics with minasan. The maps he sent through email are very different. The main pass is difficult, but not so different from other courses we've tackled. The Gaijin's course is an old mining road created for heavy equipment access, and converted to a limited access training track after the mine closed. It's not anything like passes we've driven. In fact, it looks brutal from other images I found online while doing research this afternoon."
"So, are we going to try to ruin both courses?"
"I have to talk to Fujiwara and the others to see how they feel about this development. If we want, we can consider doing two separate battles. It will require extra time, and exhaustive training measures. I'll call everyone to schedule a meeting."
"So, we may do back to back races then?"
"I think that will depend on whether our crew can get extra days off from work, and if the Gaijin faction sends us an invitation. We can't do both races on the same day. We will have to train on the one course during daylight hours. To do a second battle requires staying over a second night to train through the morning and battle that afternoon, Keisuke."
"Hm, sounds weird to battle during the day."
"It's good practice for becoming a professional driver, Otouto."
"Top racers from other countries' sounds like a great challenge to me. I've had several tough opponents since we started Project D, but I'd like to face someone that's as tough as Kami-sama's foot again."
"It would be fascinating to see the techniques that qualify someone as a top foreign driver. Wouldn't it, Keisuke?"
"Hai, Aniki."
