Inside the spacious library on the sprawling campus, Fushida Takagi sat with his mekake. He was dressed in a dark forest-green tuxedo with a greenish-silver tie and cumberbund, while she was resplendent in a silk brocade off-the-shoulder gown in a rich aqua.
They had caused quite a stir when they had entered, both for her exceptional good looks, but also for the fact that she was not the normal type of girl that he usually went out with. She was wearing a gown that was form-fitting to her hips, then flared out from there, made of subtly shaded aqua silk that was very pale at her shoulders and deep at the lower hem. Her shoulder-length aqua-colored hair was a far cry from the long-haired blondes that he seemed to prefer, but no one but the two of them knew what there really was between them. They sat at one of the tables near the back, softly commenting to each other about the simpering society matrons and their stuffy escorts that entered the room.
"Look at that one." the dark-haired man said softly, gesturing at the door with his ever-present swagger-stick where a corpulent middle-aged woman in vibrant green walked in with a much younger man.
"That's Satsuya Fuyuko. She's a real stuck-up type. Her husband made quite a fortune in the shipping business before he died and left everything to her. She really should start acting her age, and that color looks terrible on her. It would have been much better if she simply toned it down a little bit. That man with her must be her current 'flavor of the month', but I don't know who he is."
"He's handsome enough." Kaiou Michiru said appreciatively. "He looks sort of lost, however. Poor baby. I wonder if he really understands anything about things like these."
"Probably not." Takagi smiled wryly. "Ah! Now that one is none other than Ishikawa Seiji and his wife Yuriko. See the difference between them? Those two don't have to put on airs, and they know it."
"Look over there!" she exclaimed softly, one shapely hand going to her mouth in surprise. "Is that - Usagi? It certainly looks like her, but it can't be! What would she be doing here? And that looks like Mamoru with her, but - - I don't get it!"
"They do appear as if they belong here, but I know that I've never seen them at events like these. He sure looks familiar to me, though." the man mused, wondering just who the couple could be. "Wait a minute! They're sitting down at the table reserved for Chiba International. "
"It IS Mamoru and Usagi." the aqua-haired woman shook her head slowly, trying to make sense of the sight that met her eyes.
"They sure do make a handsome couple," Takagi replied, a note of almost desire in his deep voice. "In fact, I would be hard-pressed to make a choice between them. Hey, there's my cousin with his escort of the night. Well, how about that! I do know her, but I didn't know where she was in the city. I wonder what's she doing here with Kojiro?"
"I don't know," Michiru said quietly. "I had no idea that you knew Mamoru's sister. I only met her once, but I never thought that she was so beautiful. I seem to remember that she rather faded into the back-ground most of the time, but now, she stands out."
"If I knew that she'd so beautiful all dressed up, I would have asked her out back in the States." he said, the hunger in his voice growing more pronounced.
"It looks like you have competition in that regard, love." she almost purred. "Your cousin seems to have that well in hand."
"Lucky Kojiro." he sighed deeply. "But she’s already married."
"I'm sure that he'll work things out for himself." Michiru smiled at her Bonded lover of nearly three months, though neither of them were aware of exactly how long they had actually been together.
"You're right." Takagi nodded, glancing over at her. Then his attention was snatched away by the loud snapping sound of a long cape. His eyes suddenly became riveted to the door where a vision in crimson now stood, a cloak held out at arm's length as she waited for one of the coat-check people to take it.
"Great gods and little kami!" he exclaimed, his eyes roving up and down the sensual form in clinging scarlet velvet. "Is that Aster? She's utterly magnificent! I sure envy whoever she's with, and I'd give just about anything to take his place."
"I think that nearly every one else is contemplating that as well." she giggled softly, knowing the way his tastes usually ran. "Every man here is staring at her, and no few of the women. But I assure you, she's not with a man." Now her voice took on an odd quality that was both somewhat sad and defeated at the same time.
"Who is it, then?" he asked her, still staring at the golden-haired woman as she literally slinked across the hard-wood floor to a table at the other end of the room, her arm held easily by the person in the midnight-blue tuxedo.
"That's Haruka," Michiru said, her voice soft. "I'm … glad that they found one another, but why didn't she ever call me?"
"I don't know." he replied, taking her hand gently. "So, that's your Wind Dancer, eh? I like the look of her. Maybe she was waiting for you to call her and got tired of waiting."
"But it hasn't been that long!" she sounded somewhat defensive. "I swear that it's only been a week or so!"
"Somehow, I have the distinct feeling that it's been a lot longer than we thought." he said slowly, gazing around the room.
They talked softly together, dimly noticing that the chill they had been feeling for so long, which had increased when they entered the room, was growing deeper still, but very few other people seemed to notice.
Michiru saw that Haruka seemed to sense it as well, as did Aster, and Usagi was practically shivering. Her raven-haired escort soon pulled off his white tuxedo jacket and wrapped it around her, causing her to gaze up at him thankfully. Then, she saw that Aster had apparently asked for, and been brought a small brazier and a pot of something that looked very much like steaming tea.
Thinking that it was a very good idea, Michiru flagged down one of the waiters and asked for the same thing, hoping that the steaming liquid would help to ease the bone-numbing cold that so thoroughly chilled her. It did help, but not much, and she saw that Usagi had done the same, as had the beautiful woman who was with Takagi's first cousin. Why were they also feeling the cold? With Haruka, Aster and Usagi, she could see a connection: they all had planet power. The aqua-haired woman had no explanation for Mamoru’s sister, and it confused her.
Off to one side, an orchestra was playing softly as the guests continued to arrive, and before too long, Seido Joji, the Dean of the University, signaled for the music to stop as he took his place behind the microphone on the low dais. He tapped the mike for attention, then began the usual boring speech about the reason they were all there, and how much the huge library needed the proposed new wing, as well as the potential benefits that the added space would provide to the community.
Most of the people who were there paid little attention to the actual speech, for they were all ready to contribute to the worthy cause, and were willing to put up with the 'begging talk' that was inevitable at events like this.
Mamoru, who had never attended a charity function before, listened closely, and agreed that the library needed the extension and other amenities that were planned. Though he now had many of the things that the library lacked, he knew that the students and others who were able to use the facilities would be very grateful for the additions. He planned to make a sizable donation of his own, now that he had the available funds to do so. Usagi was proud of her new husband, and agreed with him.
When the speeches were over, and there were several, the orchestra began playing again, and several couples got up from their tables and moved out onto the open floor to begin the dancing. They were well used to the agenda of these functions, and they knew that this provided them with the excuse to get together and socialize.
It also gave them the chance to finally meet the heir to Chiba International and his lovely wife and welcome them into the ranks of the elite. As for their donations, there was plenty of time to discreetly hand the proper people the plain envelopes, which contained their checks for whatever amount they chose to give. Dean Seido was certain that this drive would be the best one ever, because everyone would be trying to show the newcomer how these things were done, and it would show in the monies collected.
Aster looked at her mekake, and by unspoken agreement, they rose to join the dancing, each one hoping that the exercise would help them warm up. So far, nothing had worked, not even when Aster had un-obtrusively slid her hands between the brazier and the pot, directly in the path of the low flames.
Mamoru and Usagi also moved onto the dance floor, wishing that they, too could get warmer. Takagi noticed that his lover was watching the couples, and decided that they would join the others as well, while his cousin managed to coax his reluctant assistant onto the floor with the rest.
"I had hoped that this would help ward off the chill." Aster nearly whispered to her sandy-haired koibito as they moved around on the hard-wood floor to the strains of a waltz.
"Same here." Haruka nodded back, shivering slightly with the cold she still felt keenly. "But the dance seems much too sedate to do anything to warm me up. There just has to be something that we can do. I feel as if I'm going to freeze to death, and I know that you're even colder than I am."
"Dance me over to the conductor." the golden-eyed woman asked softly, indicating the direction with a nod of her head. "I have an idea of how to liven things up a bit." It took some rather fancy maneuvering, but before too long the tuxedo-clad woman had steered them to where the baton-wielding man stood.
"This is way too slow for someone like me." Aster told the man as he continued to direct the musicians. "Why don't we make the next one a Tango?"
"A Tango?" the conductor raised one well-shaped eyebrow at her, and smiled slyly. "You've got it."
"That should help warm us up." Aster smiled at her partner as they moved back out into the small crowd of dancers. "I, for one, plan to be very energetic. Besides, I think that it's another good way for me to take people's minds off of Akari. Right, Speedy?"
"Not to mention getting me all excited." Haruka chuckled back, holding her Bonded mekake closer to her, breathing in the delightful fragrance of sandalwood and jasmine that permeated her golden curls. "C'mon, Sun-Face. Let's show these stuffed-shirts how to really dance."
The first set now seemed interminable to the woman in scarlet, but the slow waltz was soon over, and the distinctive strains of a Tango filled the air. Haruka pulled a long-stemmed rose from one of the many floral centerpieces and, with one arm securely wrapped around her koibito, she ran the silken petals down her face lovingly. Aster soon snatched the blossom and placed the stem between her even, white teeth as she was drawn up tightly against her lover's chest. She threw everything she had into the erotic dance, her eyes on Haruka, her whole being focused on that one moment alone. They might as well have been alone, for all that they noticed anything else at that moment.
Not far away, Mamoru and Usagi were also dancing as if they were the only ones in the room, but the rose that he used didn't come from any of the many vases around the place. His was one of his mystical blooms, born of his power, and it sent delightful shivers through his radiant wife. They moved as one, and somewhere in the back of his mind, he wondered where she had learned to Tango, but that tiny piece of trivia meant nothing at that moment. All that he was aware of, was that his beloved Usagi was held tightly in his arms, his wife at long last.
Halfway across the room from Aster and Haruka, a third couple also added to the sensual sight. Takagi and Michiru blended together so well that it seemed that not even a piece of paper could be placed between them. It seemed that they were pouring out all of their passion in that single act, yielding only to the other, clinging to each other as if to life itself. They, too, danced as if there was no-one else there, and their feelings mounted higher every second. They no longer felt the numbing chill that only a few had noticed, and they silently wished that they weren't constrained by their clothing, for if they truly were alone, the dance would have been the prelude to something far more intimate.
Rounding out the square of energetic dancers, Kojiro and Akari moved together as if they had rehearsed it many times. He was surprised at the passion she poured into the dance, and it made his blood boil to think of her in his arms like that. When she lightly ran her hands over his body, his skin tingled fiercely, aching for more of her touch, and when he held her closely, he hoped to catch a glimpse of her eyes, but they were closed, though her face glowed with her inner feelings. He had no way of knowing that her mind's eye placed Mamoru in his place, nor did he care at the time. She thrilled him, and he reveled in the way she moved against him.
Many of the people who had chosen not to dance now stared in awe at the four couples that dominated the floor, their erotic sensuality fairly oozing from every fiber of their beings. Even some of those who had begun the dance stared open-mouthed at the perfect square in the center of the room, each corner marked by a pair that simply reeked of their extreme passion. No few comments flew around the room as each man envied those on the floor, and each woman yearned to be out there in the arms of whichever person they most wished for. Passions ran hot among the onlookers, and turned their minds to far more pleasant pursuits. Even Dean Seido found himself highly excited by the erotic dancing, and he knew that the rest of the night with his wife would be the best he had experienced in a very long time.
The music came to a stunning close, and a spontaneous applause spread through the room, but the quartet of dancers hardly noticed. Their emotions still ran through them, and they panted out their feelings, only dimly realizing that the music had stopped. Not one of them wanted the moment to end, and their hammering hearts only added to the effect. Just then, a whiff of charred wood permeated the air, and someone screamed.
"Oh my gods!" a woman's shrill voice literally rent the air, causing many of the people to turn and stare at her. "What is that?"
The distraught woman was pointing shakily at a point in the middle of the floor, and quite a few followed where she indicated. More people added their cries to hers as the witnessed a strange pattern literally etch itself into the hard-wood floor, the thin tendrils of smoke wafting up as the design burned through. The onlookers could only stare in shock as the markings grew larger and became more complex by the second. Then, on opposite sides of the singed wood, both Mamoru and Akari suddenly cried out, as if they were in pain. Usagi led her husband to a nearby chair, wondering what was wrong, not seeing that his sister had nearly collapsed into her date's arms.
"What's the matter?" Professor Tanamura asked softly, his voice showing his concern.
"I am not sure." Akari panted harshly, trying to pin down the source of the pain, but failing miserably. "I cannot seem to focus on it. Gomen nasai."
But in her heart, she knew what it was. Something was happening that would require her attention in her other guise, and she was grateful that her brother and his wife were there to help her in the fight that she knew was coming quickly. She allowed herself to be led away toward a seat, her mind in a whirl, wondering how she could find some place in which to transform, then she decided that she would simply pretend to panic, and run away until she got far enough away so that no one could see her change.
"What is it, Mamoru?" Usagi asked, her blue eyes wide in a face that betrayed her own fear. "What can I do to help you?"
"It's coming." he said through teeth that were gritted against the pain. "I can feel it. It's coming here right now. We've got to find a way to get out of here so that we can fight it."
Just then, a horrendous creature rose from the center of the strange pattern. It was a nauseating yellowish-green color, reeked of sulfur and had a hideous aspect, looking like some mad scientist's fearsome cross between a gigantic preying mantis and some sort of movie alien guaranteed to frighten and disgust the viewer.
It was more than ten feet tall and had six long, segmented legs, yet somehow stood erect on four of them, the last two equipped with what appeared to be some kind of hands with too many fingers. The body was very much like that of an insect, divided into thorax, abdomen and tail, but those seemed to be armored with an exo-skeleton of unknown origin, and there was the remnant of a wing-case on it's dorsal ridge.
But it was the head of the creature that inspired the greatest fear in those who saw it. The fore-part of it was roughly triangular in shape, though there was a long, rounded protrusion extending backwards, giving it a strange look. The thing appeared to have no eyes, nor did there seem to be anything that seemed to approximate visual organs. Yet, even all of that couldn't compare to it's mouth, for there definitely was one of those.
A gaping maw showing several pair of mandibles nested inside each other partially covering the opening which was lined with an impossible number of teeth, each one pointing backwards into the thing's gullet. It let out a tremendous screech that shook the people to their bones, and caused many of the crystal vases to shatter.
That proved to be too much for the simpering society matrons and their escorts. With a loud chorus of cries, the assembled crowd scattered, fleeing in all directions. Several people were nearly trampled as the majority tried to exit through the doors, though more than a few opted for the balconied windows, leaping out into the bushes and grass beyond.
Aster and Haruka ducked into one balcony, quickly stepping off to one side, shielding themselves from view. When they noticed that no one seemed to be following them, they each pulled out their henshin wand and held them in a firm grip, ready to call on their planet powers.
"Uranus Star Power Transform!" the tuxedoed woman called out loudly, her body suddenly surrounded by the winds that governed her abilities.
"Solar Cosmic Power Transform!" the woman in scarlet echoed the cry, her form engulfed by a shaft of brilliant golden light, transforming her into the Solar Senshi that had not seen action in more than ten thousand years. Once they had both assumed their other identities, they charged back inside to face the terrifying creature.
Akari had done something similar, though when she broke and ran, she literally dove off of the high balcony into a bed of rose bushes, hardly feeling it as the long thorns tore through the beautiful gown, penetrating the thin knit fabric clear to her skin. It took her only a few seconds to wriggle free of the thick plants, and she reached into her clutch purse to grasp her henshin wand.
"Terra Planet Power Transform!" she nearly shouted in English using a clear voice. If there had been anyone looking, they would have seen what looked like a pillar of stone that surrounded her as she curled into a fetal position, and blasted away from her spread-eagled body to reveal the form of Sailor Terra, never before seen in Japan.
She then ran around to the front of the building to enter through the front door. She hadn't thought to call the others, but as she neared the doors, she heard the clear voice of Sailor Sol as she informed the Kishi of the attack.
Takagi and Michiru had run out through the doors to find some place to change, and dashed back in their empowered states, having passed Terra on their way out. The two of them arrived just in time to see the now empty room, dominated by the gigantic beast, which now held a hapless woman in one claw. The terrified woman shrieked loudly, writhing in her fear as the creature lifted her towards it's huge maw.
"Hey, Ugly!!" a loud female voice called from one side, causing the beast to drop the frightened female and turn toward the sound, the shaken woman scrambling toward the exit. Even the Knight of Time could feel the tremendous energy emitted by the speaker. Just as the monster turned, the purple-clad form of Sailor Terra stepped out, her arms crossed over her head.
"Terra Shock Wave!" she shouted, sending out her arc of ground-rippling energy. It impacted the beast, rocking it violently, though it did little to otherwise affect it, and it shocked her deeply.
"Uranus World Shaking!" the tall Senshi in midnight-blue and yellow cried, sending out her powerful attack. This, too had little effect, causing her to stare in dis-belief.
"Terra! Uranus!" the figure in shining gold with red bows called out, pointing at one of the wide balconies. "Try and blast it out there where we have more room to fight it!"
"Right!" the other two chorused, then angled their attacks to attempt the maneuver suggested by the third. Both energy blasts struck the creature broadside and knocked it off it's four legs and sent it stumbling toward the balcony, but not completely through it.
Sailor Neptune then hurried over and joined the two, and they tried it again, this time succeeding in the attempt, watching as the thing literally flew out and landed hard on the grassy yard outside.
Once the creature was out of the building, the four powerful Senshi leaped after it, only to find that Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Kamen were already there. She had her scepter in her gloved hands, and was attacking the monster with everything that she had.
As the four Senshi and Knight of Time joined them, they were able to keep the thing off guard, but nothing seemed to be quite able to defeat it. Before too long, the rest of the Sailor Senshi arrived, having been called in by their Princess, and they were quickly followed by seven armored and caped forms that had only been seen in Europe and the United States.
The men, known as the Hogosha Kishi, or Guardian Knights, immediately sprang into action, performing their ancient function, which was that of distracting the creature so that the more powerful women could take care of the threat, though each of the men had fought on his own at other times.
Each of the Kishi used his personal attack, but they were all surprised to see that Sol, seemed to be much stronger than he had been during their last fight in the States. Yet they didn't let this throw them off in their duty. Each man did his best to keep the horrendous monster off-balance so that the women could fight better.
On one of the balconies, near the areas where he had hidden behind one of the long draperies, Tanamura Kojiro watched the battle with awe. He had seen the beautiful Sailor Senshi in action before, but now there were even more of them, and they had somehow found male counterparts to themselves. He stared as the creature shook off attack after attack, sending fighters flying at every turn. When he saw Sailor Mercury struck by the thing's segmented tail and sent flying, he could stand still no longer. Leaping lightly off of the balcony, he charged boldly onto the battle-ground.
He wasn't sure what he could do to help, but he also knew that he had to try. As he ran, his mind became clearer, and he grew more determined with every rapid stride. Then something strange happened. The old heirloom that his mother had given him, a miniature sword that he had been using as a letter-opener sprang from his coat pocket and began floating in front of his eyes. A sphere of light flashed into being around it, quickly making it transform into a long silvery sabre which moved to be within easy reach.
Somehow knowing that the weapon would help him, he stretched out his right hand and firmly grasped the hilt. Immediately upon claiming the slightly curved sword, silver-chased medium-blue armor, an ankle-length cape and a helmet formed around his body, and his speed increased dramatically. Now he knew exactly who and what he was, and why he had been having those crazy dreams all of his life.
Leaving a loud sonic boom behind him, Kishi Mercury, the Knight of Speed raced forward and caught Sailor Mercury before she could hit the ground, coming to a stop some fifty meters away, holding her securely. Only then did he look down at her, and their eyes met.
"Ami." he whispered, his now blue eyes going wide. "Mercury. Oh, my dear Umino! Why didn't I know you before?"
"Kojiro." she answered, also in a soft whisper. "Hayasa. I guess that you were never near enough to me to be affected before now, Mercury. Now I know what Sailor Sol was trying to tell me recently. We were once twins back in the Silver Millennium, and now we're together again."
"Yes." he nodded, reaching up and removing his Hoplite helmet, revealing his hair, which was now as deeply blue as hers. Then, he bent down slightly and kissed her, their eyes locked together, lost in the depths of each other, totally oblivious to everyone and everything else.
Behind them, the battle raged on, and nothing seemed to affect the creature, though powerful attacks did appear to do some actual damage, it was apparently not enough to defeat it. All of the fighters were getting more than a little frustrated at this, and they were also running low on power.
Then the Senshi in shining gold stepped forward a pace, a strange look on her face.
"It's absorbing everything we throw at it!" she called loudly. "We can't beat it by attacking one on one!"
"What are we going to do?" Sailor Venus shouted, a note of hysteria in her normally mellow voice. "We can't even leave a scratch on that thing!"
"Everybody get down!" the golden Senshi yelled, motioning for the others to comply. "I'm going to try and overload that beast!" she hesitated just long enough to see that the others had dropped to the ground, then she brought her gloved hands together in front of her body, just below the red bow, the left hand held above the right.
"Solar Flare Burst!" she cried in a firm, loud voice, as she moved her hands to her left side, then swung the right one toward the creature as if she was throwing something like a frisbee. A flash of radiant golden energy flew out, impacting the monster squarely. At first, the thing seemed to be absorbing the flood of raw power as it had everything else, then it simply exploded, the concussion wave knocking the golden-clad woman off her feet.
"It's over." Sailor Mars sighed, climbing to her feet and walking over to where the beast had been only moments before.
"But what was that thing?" Sailor Venus asked, wiping her forehead with one hand. "How can we fight something that eats up everything we can throw at it?"
"We fight them any way we have to." the golden one said flatly, picking herself up and joining the rest. "We keep on doing what we must until something better comes along. That's all we can do at the moment."
They all instinctively trusted her, easily accepting her words of advice as if they had been doing so all of their lives. Off to one side, watching but not joining in, the enigmatic Sailor Pluto stood, half hidden by the brush, her face an unreadable mask. Sailor Sol had decided to interfere at last. A flare of sudden anger swept through her, and she turned swiftly and vanished into the trees.
