*Hachimaki - Headband.
Cho rushed over to Mitsu’s room at the inn, excited about the fact that he'd get to see her alone, with no one else to interrupt. Cho had a feeling that an opportunity such as that would not happen too often due to Horie’s watchful eye. Sure, Saitou warned Cho not to get involved personally with the woman, but Cho could barely hold himself together when Mitsu was anywhere near him.
Cho’s pounding heart was about ready to explode out of his chest. Not because he just ran in from the carriage out from the street, up a flight of stairs at the inn and was short of wind, but because it was Mitsu that will be the one Cho will be in the presence of as soon as he got past the door that separated he from her.
“Mitsu?” Cho called out as he used his most flavored sounding ‘gentleman’s voice’ and rapped lightly on her door. “The most gallant man in Tokyo is at your door, are you in?” Cho tapped again.
The door slid open and there stood Mitsu in all her beauty. In Cho’s hungry eyes it was as though Mitsu shimmered like a heavenly being that had been sent down to earth exclusively for him.
“Oh! Cho! Douzo,” Mitsu bowed and motioned him to enter as she greeted him with a warm, friendly smile.
“My pleasure, purty lady,” Cho bowed and entered her well-decorated western style room. “I must admit, I’d give just about anything to be living my life out in a place that is well arranged as this right here,” Cho said and placed his hands on his hips as he scanned the room admiringly.
Mitsu giggled. “You do not seem the type to be comfortable living according to western standards, Cho-san.”
“Well, let me tell you, if I hada beautiful woman like yourself on my arm, I could adapt purty quickly to any living style there was!” Cho confessed part of his reoccurring daydream to the Mitsu as she stood before him obviously amused.
Mitsu giggled again and asked, “Is Cho-san admitting that he is infatuated with Mitsu?”
Cho grinned, lowered his eyes and admitted, “Aww shucks, don’t tell me it’s showing that obviously! I’m a sucker for a purty lady and I go limp… Well, what I mean is… My knees go limp.”
Mitsu blushed, then moved closer to Cho, placed her hand upon his excited heart to feel its pulsation and asked, “Are you talking about just any pretty woman, or just one in particular?”
Cho restrained himself from what his mind was begging him to do. His body was another part of Cho that needed restraint, for it was practically screaming to wrap itself around Mitsu.
“Damn!” Cho said blatantly admitting to his desires by his body language and the look of lust in his eyes, “I don’t care how many purty women surrounded me right now, I am just taken in by one and she’s standing right in front of me!”
Cho’s eyes snapped open as he remembered the reason for being there with Mitsu.
“Yipes lil’ darlin’ !” Cho hit the side of his head with his open palm-heel. “Mr. Horie…” Cho sputtered out, “Mr. Horie sent me over here to tell you to get the men together and meet with him at the store, pronto!”
“Oh? Doesn’t he already have two men running around for him at the storefront right now? Hisomu-san already asked the other men to meet with him at the shop this morning as well, but why would he want even my men?” Mitsu asked.
“Umm, them two that spent the night on watch duty last night moved on… as of this mornin’. Looks like stormy skies ahead. We found the two of them deceased.” Cho stretched out his arms in preparation to comfort Mitsu. He stood that way for a moment… and waited.
Mitsu looked at Cho and realized that, even though this outgoing young man was a strange sort, he certainly had a heart for him to be so willing to offer himself to her in such a manner.
“Cho-san, I am very used to receiving such information. I have seen many come and go. Some move on in promotions while others, well…” Mitsu lowered her eyes toward the floor to express regret, or perhaps even remorse.
That moment belonged to Cho. He was not about to let such an opportunity escape without at least trying to win a little of Mitsu’s favor. Quickly Cho stepped forward and gently put his arms around the woman as if she was the most fragile doll in all of Japan.
“There, there, Mitsu,” Cho spoke in a soft low tone. “Life should be more than hearing such news and I am sorry to be the one who is causing you to look so sad.”
It had been a long time since anyone had given Mitsu such caring consideration. As beautiful as she was, Mitsu’s life, up to that point, had been filled with hardship and turmoil. The man that held her close right then stirred extraordinary feelings within her. Feelings she thought she would never feel again.
“I will summon the men who are staying here at the inn and have them move to the storefront,” Mitsu said and then she leaned her head on Cho’s chest. “Cho-san…” Mitsu whispered, “…arigatou gosaimasu.”
Cho smiled.

“I really appreciate you helping me with this Sano,” Kenshin said as Sano helps Kenshin with unloading the last of the new tatami floor section Kenshin ordered a few weeks before.
“How many of these things will you be needing?” Sano asked as he picked up one end of the mat while Kenshin lifted the other end.
“There is only one more load and then we can start installing them in the back rooms of the main house. The installation can start tomorrow. Miss Kaoru wants to work in a new alcove to honor her deceased father,” Kenshin said, filling Sano in.
The men carried the tatami mats through the gate and lay them down one, on top the other. After all were unloaded off the flat wagon, Kenshin and Sano hopped up onto the wagon and start back to town to get the last load of tatami.
“You know, Kenshin, it’s obvious that something’s weighing heavily on your shoulders. You just don’t seem to be yourself today."
“Don’t worry about me Sano,” Kenshin glanced over at his concerned friend. “I know that life has a way of working itself out, if one is patient.”
“Hey Kenshin?”
“Hmn?”
“How long has there been an attraction between you and Aoshi? I mean, I know it just didn’t happen over night, but I thought you two started out as foes.”
Kenshin shrugged his shoulders and said, “I never had anything against Aoshi. At that time, he was driven to be greater than I in swordsmanship and searched for me until he finally found me. Then he challenged me to a fight.” Kenshin pointed his index finger to the side of his head and added, “When I think about it, Aoshi must have allowed the need of being greater than who he believed I was as the battousai, to become an obsession in his life.”
Sano nodded his head. “That sure sounds familiar. I remember hating Saitou; at least I thought I did. In fact, I tried to beat that bastard up every chance I could get at him. The truth of the matter was that, deep down, I wanted to be just like him. I admired that wolf! I have no idea what the hell it is that he sees in me. We…” Sano slowed his speech a bit. “…We sort of had a rough time today, mainly because I don’t know what Saitou’s feeling are in regards to being, um… lovers. I know he wants me to share myself with him, but I have no idea what that wolf needs from me. Shit… I don’t even know if he needs me at all.”
“Hmmm, I wonder if that is how Aoshi is feeling as well. I didn’t offer him much to think about and we parted rather awkwardly,” Kenshin said after hearing Sano’s view point of what he’d gone through leading up to the present relationship Sano has with Saitou.
“Wow! We never know what to expect out of life. We go along for a while on a smooth road and bam! Something comes flying at us, totally unexpected. I learned my lesson when I thought Saitou bought it in Kyoto. I thought I was never going to see him again. Damn, no way would I pass up this second chance. We never know when it’s our turn to bite!” Sano looked over at Kenshin and saw that he was really struggling with the 'Aoshi thing'.
Kenshin pulled the flat-cart up to the trading shop where the rest of his order had been set out front for them to load.
“We’ll take care of this in no time,” Sano shouted above the noise of the busy street as he hopped off the cart and maneuvered the horse-team back a few steps to flush the loading platform.
Sano secured the team and started walking toward the building where Kenshin was waiting for him to help with the load.
Suddenly a woman screamed from across the street as two men fled from a third man trampling her as they ran. Just as Sano turned around to see what the commotion was, the man who was pursuing the two men cried out.
“STOP THOSE MEN! THIEVES!”
Sano sprang into action instinctively, tripped the first man and right punches the second man all in one sweep. The first man stumbled to the ground. Kenshin jumped from the loading platform and landed square on the man’s chest with his knee hitting its mark. Sano knocked the second man out cold with one blow.
The merchant from across the street was amazed at Kenshin and Sano’s teamwork. “Arigatou gosaimasu!” The merchant gratefully shouted. “These men robbed my store and took all the money we have! If it weren’t for you two, our hard earned money would be gone! Arigatou!”
Another merchant brought over some rope to bind the men until the police could get there to manage the thieves. The man Kenshin was restraining began to struggle, so Sano walked over and shoved his foot onto the thief’s back and pinned him down to the ground. Kenshin proceeded to tie the man’s wrists together.
“Let’s get that other guy tied up too before he wakes,” Sano said.
“Hmn,” Kenshin nodded and stood up from kneeling over the bounded man.
“KENSHIN! LOOK OUT!” Sano screamed out a warning and pushed Kenshin aside with his entire weight, as if Sano was trying to break down a door.
A split second later, a shot was heard. Sano weight bashed Kenshin’s smaller frame knocking the wind out of Kenshin and sent Kenshin to the ground with Sano on top of him. Both Kenshin and Sano hit the ground hard.
Two other men who had been watching the whole event jumped in to take the gun away from the thief Sano had previously knocked out. Apparently, the man wasn’t unconscious for very long. No one expected the thieves to be armed until Sano realized that the first thief had taken out a gun from his kimono and aimed it at Kenshin who had just stood up from binding the thief’s partner.
“SANO!” Kenshin pushed Sano’s weight off of him and saw the dark red liquid running down off of Sano’s side onto Kenshin’s kimono. “SANO!” Kenshin called out to his close friend again, but there was no response.
The merchant ran to Sano and rolled him over. “He has been shot,” the merchant said pointing at Sano’s right side and then applied pressure to keep Sano from bleeding.
“Quickly, let’s get him on the wagon so that I we can get him to Dr. Gensai,” Kenshin shouted to anyone who was willing to help.

“Mitsu-san?” Horie called out as he tucked his weapon in hiding on himself and strapped his trusty, good-luck tantou to his side, just below his kimono.
Mitsu scurried over to Horie and bowed, “Hai?”
“The top floor has been restored and the bodies removed. Please see that the men finish with the rooms at the other end as well. I would like for everyone to stay here as a precaution,” Horie ordered before he took three of the thirteen men with him to confront Serizawa.
Outside Cho was waiting at the carriage to tote the men to their destination. He hated to leave Mitsu, but was sure she would be okay with all the men having to stay at the store location and close proximity. Cho noticed that he constantly had to remind himself to stay in control and not allow his feelings to go beyond what it had already crossed over.
Cho steered the horse team to the other side of town where, just last week, two men were found slashed. This territorial drug war had only just begun, and already four men were dead. Cho was hoping that more men will not meet their end during this meeting between the drug lords. Saitou foreseen all of this, and had already positioned men to make sure nothing was being overlooked.
Cho pulled the team upside Serizawa’s building and the men stepped off the cab. Horie nodded in Cho’s direction. “Stay with the carriage, Cho, and keep watch out here in case there is a rush from the outside. This shouldn’t take much time,” Horie said while he signaled one man to stay behind with Cho.
Horie and the two other men walked into the shop that Horie visited a few days ago. As he entered, he looked at the area where he left two of Serizawa’s men laying in their own blood. It was Horie’s way of announcing his arrival to Tokyo.
“Mr. Horie, I presume?” A tall staunched man with a deep smooth voice spoke upon entering the display room with another two men and stood by the door they just entered from.
“We can skip all the formalities,” said Horie as he glared at Serizawa. Obviously we’re the stronger dealers in Tokyo. If you try to stand up against us, it will only mean the end to your operation. We maybe strong, but we’re not necessarily greedy.”
Horie walked over to the spot where he slashed the throat of one of Serizawa men and looked up at Serizawa again. “I’ll leave this for you to think about.” Horie pointed his index finger up in counting. “Number one… You can come over to our side, work for me, and I’ll cut you in on twenty percent of the profits.” Horie added another finger to the count and continued, “Number two… If you decide not to join us, then we will wipe you and your business off so clean your ancestors will not remember you existed.”
Serizawa chuckled amusingly and folded his arms in front of himself. “If you cut us in for forty percent…”
Horie cut Serizawa off and interjected, “Thirty percent and no more than that!”
Serizawa looked over at his two men standing on either side of him. They both nodded. Serizawa looked back at Horie and nodded, “Thirty percent is worth at least some consideration and discussion among our men.”
“Good, I will give you three days,” Horie said, bowed and left.

“Saitou!” Kenshin rapped on the door to Saitou’s house for the third time.
Saitou opened the door and he immediately recognized the appearance of urgency on Kenshin’s face. “Himura, what is it?”
“It is Sano,” Kenshin said swiftly.
Saitou’s heart dropped at the mention of Sano’s name coupled with the expression on Kenshin’s face. “Where is he?”
“Sano is at Dr. Gensai’s, I have a flat-bed carriage out front,” Kenshin answered.
“Good, My driver has left for the day,” Saitou stepped out of the house and latched his door.
The two men hurried to the carriage, climbed aboard, and were on their way as fast as the two horses could possibly go on the dirt roadway, kicking up clouds of dust behind them.
“What happened?” Saitou shouted over the sound of the galloping horses.
Kenshin shouted back, “Sano was shot. I got him to Dr. Gensai as soon as I could. Dr. Gensai and Miss Megumi are working on him now. I felt you needed to know, and I’m sure Sano would appreciate seeing you there when he comes to.”
“Ahou!” Saitou exclaimed. “Why does trouble follow Sanosuke, or is it that―it is he who follows trouble?”
“This time Sano was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was helping the situation by bringing down a men who was responsible for the robbery.” Kenshin saved the entire description of what happened for a later time.
The men rode on for the rest of the short trip to Dr. Gensai’s with no more conversation. Saitou had too many things on his mind and could not think of anything else but Sano’s welfare.
Kenshin pulled the team up to Dr. Gensai’s office building. Dr. Gensai was just inside the front office to meet with Kenshin and Saitou.
“Dr. Gensai! How is Sano?” Kenshin immediately asked the doctor upon entering the room.
“Miss Megumi is with him now.” Dr. Gensai said. “He is resting quietly. Sano came through the operation just fine. He’s a strong young man, and with a lot of rest to give his body time to recuperate, this will only be a memory.”
Megumi stuck her head out from behind the curtain that leads to the back room. “You two can come in now,” she said to Kenshin and Saitou whom she knew were full of concern.
They entered the room and saw Sano laying there on a futon. He looked peaceful and didn't seem as if he’d been through any ordeal. Kenshin and Saitou sat on either side of Sano on the tatami.
Megumi knelt at Sano’s head and began changing his cold compress for his head. “The wound wasn't too bad. The bullet clipped his rib, and that will take time to heal. Dr. Gensai removed the bone fragments and I made sure the wound was cleaned out thoroughly. Thank heavens none of his main blood vessels were severed, but he lost blood and will feel weak for a few days because of it,” Megumi filled the men in.
“Sano pushed me out of the way,” Kenshin spoke out. “Sano seen that bullet coming, he took the shot and saved my life.”
“That sounds like our ‘Knuckle-head’, all right,” Megumi nodded and smiled down at Sano while she adjusted the cold compress on his forehead to make sure it will stay put.
Saitou had been silently sitting there next to Sano. His thoughts were on the harsh words between them this morning, and in parting Sano’s words were still audible in Saitou’s head…
I want you to need me, Saitou. I know you want me, but it won’t be right between us until you ‘need’ me, were Sano’s words to Saitou. It kept ringing in Saitou’s mind throughout the day, and even more so, as Saitou stared down at the pale young man then.
Saitou didn’t understand the meaning of ‘needing’ someone in the way Sano referred to earlier today. Sure, Saitou needed to eat to sustain himself, he slept when his body needed rest, and clothed himself appropriately to the changing seasons. Saitou recalled needing his comrades in battle, but always knew how to manage without them when his comrades fell beside him during the combat.
Sano laid there motionless, except for his steady breathing. Saitou watched as Sano took one breath after another. Suddenly, the thought dawned upon Saitou’s mind. What if these were Sano’s last breaths? Saitou had seen many men die from infections in their wounds that slowly overtook their bodies, until death released them from the pain and suffering of their decaying flesh and poisons in their bloodstream. What if Sano…
“Sai…” Sano stirred and barely was able to breathe Saitou’s name out.
Megumi quickly leaned over the young man and said out to him gently. “Sanosuke, everything is all right now, you’ve been shot, but you’ll be just fine.”
“Shot?” Sano said weakly. “Is… is Kenshin?”
Kenshin leaned over this time. “I am fine, Sano, thanks to you!”
Sano struggled this time to get up, but Megumi and Kenshin prevented him from doing so.
“Whoa, Sano… You’re not going anywhere right now,” Kenshin said as he pinned Sano’s shoulders to the futon.
“Buh… butttt… I have to meet with Sai… tou. Saitou!” Sano insisted, although groggily, due to the medication and loss of blood.
“I’m here Ahou,” Saitou uttered very softly, “…I’m right here beside you.”
Sano strained to open his eyes wide enough to look at Saitou in order to confirm to himself that it wasn't just a dream. Before Saitou could say anything else, Sano reached up and caught Saitou behind the neck and shoulder in order to pull Saitou close to him. Unmindful to the pain, it was more important for Sano to have the reassurance from Saitou than it was to cater to the intense pain he was in.
“Please lay…don’t leave me…” Sano pleaded as he refused to let Saitou go making it obvious to Kenshin and Megumi of his dependency on the Wolf.
Kenshin realized how awkward Saitou must have felt at the moment.
“Saitou, perhaps you should lay next to Sano, so that he will be able to rest. Right now he needs his strength to keep infection from taking a hold of his body,” Kenshin suggested.
“Hmn,” Saitou responded and quickly lay next to Sano’s side.
Megumi was touched at the sight of Sano’s vulnerability and dependency on the wolf. She’s always knew Sano as the fresh mouth young man whom had feelings for her. She had always ignored Sano’s infatuation for her, being that he is three years younger than she. But now, she realized Sano’s softer side and regretted the fact that she had let the opportunity for a chance with Sano slip away so easily.
“It looks like Sano has stabilized and will be fine as long as Fujita-sama is with him,” Megumi said as she picked up the cold compress and water tray beside Sano. “I will be in the next room if you need me.”
“I will help with the rest of these things, Miss Megumi,” Kenshin said as he picked up a few other things that was used to minister to Sano’s condition.
“Saitou please let us know if anything changes here with Sano. We’ll leave you two alone to get some rest for a while,” Kenshin requested and then left the room with Megumi.
“Don’t you go on and start worrying, Kenshin,” Megumi saw the look on Kenshin’s face. “Worry isn’t good for anyone, including yourself.”
“I know, Miss Megumi, thank you. Sano will be all right since Saitou’s there with him.”
Megumi couldn't resist quelling her curiosity and asked, “Is something going on between those two that hasn’t been made known to many?”
Kenshin nervously chuckled, “Uuh, I’m not sure what you mean, that I don’t, but I must get the rest of the tatami before it gets too late, and since Sano is going to be fine with rest, I will take care of it now, that I will.”
Kenshin quickly made his exit, but before he did, Kenshin also mentioned to Megumi that he will be back to look in on Sano as soon as his task was done.
Megumi rinsed out the bin replaced it with fresh cool water for Sano’s cool compress and walked back to where she left him with Saitou. She couldn't help but feel that she was intruding on something that was silently spoken between the two of them as she looked down at them laying on the futon together.
It amazed her to see that the hard-nose wolf was actually cradling Sano in his arms. Megumi never thought she’d ever see the day when Saitou would reveal that side of himself to others. To see it being displayed with Sano, the recipient of his tenderness was not far from shocking to Megumi.
“I’ll set this down right next to you,” Megumi whispered not to disturb Sano. “We’ll let him rest for now.”
“Hmn,” Saitou responded still holding onto the sleeping young man snuggled against him. “Arigatou.”
Megumi left the room, this time she slid the door shut allowing the two some privacy since there were other patients out in the other rooms. Dr. Gensai had been covering for her while she kept an eye on Sano, but since Saitou was with him, she went back to seeing patients.
“You moron,” Saitou softly spoke into Sano’s ear. “Why do you always have to strive so hard? Now look at you.”
Saitou looked over at the door then back at Sano and gently placed a warm kiss on Sano’s forehead where Sano’s *hachimaki usually covered.
“Damn you Sanosuke…” Saitou looked away from Sano, stared at the ceiling and sighed. “This is why I resisted. It is because of this very feeling I’m having right now. I thought that if I didn’t tell you that I cared about you, I would never have to feel this way.” Saitou looked back at Sano and lowered his voice to just above a whisper, and continued. “The truth of the matter is…” Saitou’s voice trailed off.
Saitou repositioned himself so that he laid on his side and faced Sano. He held his hand up against Sano’s face and brushed Sano’s wild hair away from his sleeping eyes. “The truth of the matter is that… I love you. If anything should ever happen to you to take you from me, Sanosuke… I need you in my life.”
Saitou fell silent; not knowing how else to describe what was going on inside of him. He had never spoken to anyone like that, nor shared such intense emotions before. Sano, being a man, made it even more difficult for Saitou to express himself. The wolf never imagined he would ever experience a situation such as the one he was experiencing with Sano. A part of him didn’t quite believe it was actually happening.
“It’s about time…”
“Huh?” Saitou eyes open wide with surprise. He immediately tilted his head to the side to look at Sano.
Sano moved slightly in Saitou’s arms, “It’s about time you admitted your feelings for me.”
“You moron,” Saitou huffed, “how long have you been listening to me?”
“Ever since I’ve met you, Saitou. I’ll always listen to you no matter how crabby you sound.”
Sano opened his eyes and saw the look on Saitou’s face that he yearned for. That special look Saitou had just for him. “So, you love me, huh?” Sano managed a great big smile. “You need me too?”
“Shhh, get some rest Ahou!”
“I can’t rest here. Let’s go to your place so you can be my nurse and examine me,” Sano chuckled.
“Yes, I see you are feeling much better,” Saitou began to feel relief that Sano was back to the land of the living.
“I know!” Sano blurted out with excitement about an idea that had entered into his mind. “You can be my nurse and give me a sponge bath!”
“Hmmm,” Saitou thought for a bit, and then he got up and proceeded toward the door.
“Hey!” Sano shouted. “Where ya’ going?”
“Wait here, I will speak with Dr. Gensai and Megumi and see if you can be moved. Maybe they’ll agree that you can recuperate at my place,” Saitou said as he quickly stepped out to hunt the doctors down.
Sano chuckled to himself and said out loud, “Wow, I didn’t know Saitou was into stuff like being a nurse. This will be interesting!”
