CHAPTER 19
Awareness returned in painful degrees. Memories began to filter through the discomfort as Itsuke struggled to awaken. The black-haired teen's head felt like it was going to explode. He sought to recall what had happened to him as his mind began to function.
The short trip he and Takumi had taken to the top lot of Akina and back so Itsuke could display his hard work had been fun. Takumi was smiling as they talked about how much he had improved since they had last visited Akina together. Being able to talk about drifting again made everything better somehow. Takumi's praise about his new growth had made Itsuke's evening as they headed toward Akagi.
Itsuke remembered ribbing Takumi about Keisuke's claim that he was most sensitive when embarrassed. In the end Takumi had chuckled along with him over Keisuke's openness about their intimate relationship. A subtle shift in their friendship had already happened Itsuke knew. The tension was vanishing between them now that he had gotten used to his best friend being in love with Keisuke-san.
Takumi had opened up about his feelings on several levels. Itsuke had listened to Takumi without the panic he had felt before. Although it had been hard for Takumi to say all that was in his heart, Itsuke knew he was serious. Most of their talk had centered on how Takumi had fallen in love with Keisuke. For the first time, Itsuke truly understood how intense his best friend's emotions were. His eyes had been fully opened once Takumi found his voice to explain his perspective about falling in love with his teammate.
Itsuke remembered dropping Takumi off at Keisuke-san's house. They spoke for a few more minutes before Takumi went inside. Itsuke recalled that he was heading back toward his own home with a fresh, if a bit unsettling insight into falling in love. One of his favorite songs started playing on the radio. Itsuke turned up the volume and hummed along to the tune. He considered how far he had come in understanding his best friend's love life as he sped along the nearly deserted freeway.
Images and sounds echoed as the sense of something gone terribly wrong began to fill his thoughts. The sudden unexpected jerky swaying of his car's rear end to the side as his tires screamed in protest was his first warning that something was wrong. That jarring impact rattled his teeth as he fought to control his vehicle's sickening lurch. Regaining control held all of his attention as he twisted his steering wheel to stay on the highway. As the thought formed that he had been hit, another hard slamming sensation toward the side and rear of his driver's side door happened. His car's rear end began to skid sideways again without his directions. Itsuke's forehead blossomed with pain as a third, much harder impact from behind slammed his forehead into the steering wheel. He lifted his head, desperately fighting the blurriness of his vision. Itsuke tried to regain control by hitting his brakes harder. He was seeking to slow the 85 enough to straighten his vehicle's trajectory out.
The sound of scraping as his 85's passenger side began grinding against the concrete wall that separated his car from oncoming traffic echoed in his mind. Loss of momentum as the other car remained hard pressed against his rear fender to push his compact against the barricade surfaced as Itsuke tried to piece together the situation. His car came to a stop against the barricade. Sweat began to pop out on his brow as he started to shake in reaction as he killed his engine.
Before Itsuke fully recovered from the shock, the wrenching sound of his door being jerked open flashed into focus. The metallic smell that filled his nose told Itsuke that he was bleeding as he tried to find his voice to ask the stranger to call for help. The blurry image of two men yanking him out of his car rose to the fore. His stomach rebelled as the sensation of being hit hard in the stomach so he could no longer breathe returned.
The vague memory of getting thrown into a van that had stopped filtered through his misery. Itsuke recalled three men. One of them said something about one down. He had no idea of their meaning as he was dumped into the back of the van. His hands were jerked behind him and tied as something was shoved into his mouth. All Itsuke knew was that he was hurting, and in trouble as he lost consciousness.
'Where am I? Is my 85 all right? I know I was run off the road. Who were those assholes? Nani do they want with me anyway? I've never seen any of them before. Tak's going to get pissed when he finds out I was beaten up. Could they be fans of Project D? I guess someone might have decided to beat me up because I defended Tak and Keisuke being together. This sucks. Naze would they shove me into a van instead of leaving me there? Who are they?'
His eyes cracked open and the pain in his throbbing skull intensified. The light was too bright. Itsuke's eyes closed again. A quiet groan escaped on his next breath. The sound of someone moving nearby shattered the heavy silence. Shock flashed through Itsuke as new pain flared in his scalp. A hand grabbed his hair and tugged his head up at an angle. Itsuke was forced to sit up.
A harsh, heavily accented voice grated on his ears. "I know you're awake, so you might as well open your eyes."
Itsuke gritted his teeth and complied. A thin man, black-haired with a scrawny beard and mustache greeted his watering eyes. "Where am I?"
"I'm your jailor, shonen. Do exactly as you're told and things will go smoothly for you. Fight, and my mistress will insure that you learn about the true meaning of misery."
Itsuke's eyes flew open as he tried to sort out the stranger's harsh speech. "Eh? Jailor? Nani did I do?"
The slender oriental's words dripped with contempt. "You happen to be the best insurance my mistress could find under the circumstances. You should be flattered that she put so much effort into getting her hands on such a lowly little worm as yourself. Kahori-sama would never have wasted time on the likes of you if you weren't necessary to the plan. You certainly aren't much to look at, so be certain to follow directions and prove yourself valuable in your own right. Otherwise, you'll die very slowly and very painfully, Takeuchi Itsuke."
"How do you know my name? Nani do you mean by insurance?"
"Slaves have no right to ask questions. Do yourself a favor and keep your mouth shut from now on. This is the only warning you'll receive. From now on, back talk will carry a heavy punishment." The hand that had been tearing his hair out released him without warning. The man turned on heel and left the tiny room, the heavy door slamming shut with a hollow boom. Itsuke's guts churned.
'Nani did he mean when he said I'm necessary? Insurance, . . . me? Who's Kahori-sama? Naze would that creepy bastard's mistress want me? Nani the hell is going on? He said I'll be killed if I don't do whatever they tell me to do. Kami-sama, I don't understand any of this!'
Itsuke shuddered as he looked around the small concrete room he found himself in. He lifted a hand to rub his head only to discover that his wrist was chained to the wall. Fear shimmered along his spine as the situation began to sink in.
'Ch, ch, chains? Matte. Didn't he call me a slave? That's insane! Slavery's illegal! Where the hell did those bastards take me? This can't be happening. This is the worst joke anyone could play on another person. Someone's really sick to be doing something like this.'
The deepest silence Itsuke had ever heard began to tug at his panicking mind. His breath surged in his ears as he tugged at the metal bands around his wrists. He had enough slack to move a few steps in any direction if he stood, but no more. He looked around the cold cell and realized that other than the thin cot he was on, there was nothing but a metal pail to be found in the closet sized room. Were he able to cross the room, he might have gotten eight to ten steps before reaching the far wall. The length was about the same Itsuke realized. Tiny was an understatement.
Over the next several minutes, Itsuke wondered about the pail sitting near his cot. With a flash of understanding he thought he knew the reason for the bucket's presence. He would not be allowed to leave this closet even to go to the bathroom. A sense of unreality took hold. Nightmares did not begin to describe the situation Itsuke found himself in. The dark-haired youth continued to shift his gaze between the silver bucket, and the shackles on his wrists as he tried to reconcile his thoughts to the situation.
"Man, . . . this bites. I wonder how long it will take for minasan to realize I'm missing. At least Keisuke-san will be there for Tak when he finds out." Itsuke's soft voice echoed back to him as if to give him company.

Takumi hobbled to the entryway grotto because Keisuke had called for him. Standing just inside the front door was Iketani and Kenji sempais, looking like something horrible had happened. Keisuke was shaking his head and speaking as Takumi's friends removed their shoes. "Don't worry about it. You can visit Takumi any time."
Iketani sounded as bad as he looked when he spoke. "Takumi-kun, gomen for intruding this way. But, we felt it was best for us to tell you in person."
Takumi already knew something was wrong. The odd sensation he'd been feeling on and off since Itsuke had dropped him off rose again with an almost perceptible click. It was a weird feeling, as if Takumi knew he should already be aware of Iketani and Kenji's reason for stopping by unannounced. Somehow he had the inexplicable knowledge that Itsuke was involved. "Nani's wrong, sempai?"
Iketani took a deep breath and looked at the tiles beneath his feet. "Itsuke-kun's missing. His okāsan contacted the station and told Tachibana-san this morning. You're the last person that Itsuke-kun saw, Takumi-kun."
"Nani?" Takumi felt light headed as Iketani answered his question. The weird sensation got much stronger. An undertone of fear began to take shape in the back of his mind.
"Fuck." The soft toned oath flew from Keisuke's lips as he slammed the front door and moved toward him.
Kenji took up the narrative as Takumi stared at his sempais. "It seems that Itsuke's 85 was run off the road after he dropped you off the other night. The kēsatsu contacted his ryōshin once they matched his license plate to his address. Benika-san said there's no sign of Itsuke anywhere. The different hospitals in the area have been checked, but Itsuke wasn't taken to any of them by whoever crashed into his car."
Keisuke growled from beside Takumi. "Didn't someone call an ambulance? Where's the other car that was involved in the accident?"
"Nobody knows, Keisuke-san. The other car drove away. The kēsatsu searched the area to make certain Itsuke didn't wander off because there was blood on his steering wheel. The authorities know he was injured in the accident. They believe this was a hit and run, and whoever slammed into his rear driver side fender took off with Itsuke. The kēsatsu think the other person realized he was hurt badly. They were afraid they'd get in trouble if they didn't take him with them. There's even a chance the other driver was hurt pretty badly but didn't realize it at the time. The kēsatsu have an alert out looking for any damaged cars that are still drive-able right now trying to find both parties."
The din of something clattering jarred his ears as Takumi's emotions went numb. Takumi felt the ground lurch underneath him as he faced Iketani and Kenji. Only Keisuke's grip on him as his leg collapsed under his own weight kept him from crashing in a heap. His lover's arm wrapping around his waist kept him on his feet as Takumi tried to comprehend Iketani's tidings.
Keisuke sounded distant, yet worried, as he spoke. "One of you grab Takumi's crutches. I've got to get him into the study." The disjointed sense of being picked up and carried flashed into Takumi's conscience as his being remained locked in a frozen state. His body felt the loss of Keisuke's body heat register as he was lying back. His mind could not grasp the sudden eerie sensation of being drawn out of himself. The tug swamped Takumi's senses. Only the understanding that Itsuke was hurt and missing made any solid impression.
Keisuke's voice was tugging at him, harsh and fearful. "Takumi, snap out of it. Come on, damn it. Don't do this to me. Answer me!"
Another recognizable voice, also worried, spoke close to his head. "Gomen ne, Keisuke-san. I should have waited until Takumi-kun was sitting to say anything. I didn't know he'd take the news this badly."
"You don't need to apologize, Iketani. I know you had no way of knowing this would shock Takumi into a feint. You had no way of knowing that Takumi really does consider Takeuchi his younger brother."
Kenji's voice sounded frightened. "Here's some water. Maybe if Takumi-kun drinks a little, it will help? At least I've heard it does."
"Domo." A glass was forced against his lips as Keisuke's scent filled his nose. A trickle of cold wetness seeped past his lips and Takumi swallowed by reflex as his world tried to right itself. He swallowed again as more water flowed into his mouth. After another couple of swallows Takumi reached forward and grabbed the glass to force it away from his lips.
"Takumi, are you going to be Ok?" Keisuke's voice demanded an answer as he tried to get air into starving lungs.
"Enough." His mind was trying to engage again, that much Takumi knew as he blinked several times in a row. He felt disoriented and uneasy as he tried to focus on the people around him.
"Gomen ne, Takumi-kun. We didn't mean to freak you out so badly. But, the kēsatsu will probably contact you to find out anything you might know about the situation by tonight. Kenji and I thought it would be better if you heard the news from us, than from a complete stranger in a uniform."
Takumi looked up at Keisuke. Emotion compressed the blond's lips in a thin line. His blue eyes held an odd hue. The worry Keisuke was feeling wrapped around Takumi like a blanket as he twisted to hug Keisuke's waist, burying his face in his boyfriend's torso to block out everyone's concerned expressions.
Strong arms encircled him as Keisuke spoke in a soft voice. "They'll find Itsuke soon, Takumi. I'm sure he'll be fine. The baka involved must have taken him to another hospital further away. I bet they found a hospital once their panic faded enough for them to think straight again. I know Itsuke will call home soon and let his family know where he is."
Kenji spoke from the side as the mattress dipped. "I'm sure Keisuke-san's right, Takumi-kun. Itsuke will turn up before we know it."
Takumi had no words to give. The pain he felt had robbed him of all expression. He suffered with a sudden overwhelming sense of helplessness. Tears were leaking past his closed lids as he burrowed even deeper into Keisuke's arms seeking an escape from the wordless conviction that plagued him. The haven he needed did not vanish as a part of him feared would happen. He felt the warmth of Keisuke's torso driving back the frozen ache in his being as a hand rubbed along his spine. The soothing quality of Keisuke's voice helped Takumi to keep from shattering.
"Easy, Takumi. I know everything will work out. Calm down. The kēsatsu will find your little brother soon. I know you're hurting, and I can't do much for you right now. I do believe Takeuchi's going to be found. He'll be back to normal in no time. I bet he'll probably want to cry on your shoulder over his car's damage once he gets home from whichever hospital he's in right now."
A flash of certainty that Keisuke was wrong rose to choke Takumi as he felt his lover rocking him gently as if he were a child. How Takumi knew that Itsuke would not be found in a hospital was beyond his ability to explain. For a moment he wondered if he were losing his mind. Yet, no words could shake the absolute knowledge that Itsuke was in grave danger, and he could do nothing for his heart's brother.
"Is there anything we can do, Takumi-kun?" Iketani's voice held a wealth of sorrow.
Takumi shook his head against Keisuke's chest as the grief, and helplessness he felt increased. He felt his body shaking as his breath got shorter and more labored. The tears would not stop flowing as his bizarre conviction grew. Itsuke was somewhere, hurt and very afraid he knew. The only consolation in his inexplicable, overwhelming, unshakable, and indescribable belief was that he knew for certain that Itsuke was alive. The odd image of blank concrete walls flicked into his mind's eye and vanished.
Indescribable pain flared through his core. A mysterious sense that he knew Itsuke's location gnawed at the back of his stuttering mind. Takumi's emotions boiled and seethed as he took no notice of the unfamiliar images that surfaced and vanished like wispy ghosts into mists. Only Keisuke's presence, and the sudden equally strong feeling that he might soon lose his beloved remained while Takumi wept over the loss he keenly felt.
